Funny acting indesign cs3 files.

Hi
I am using Indesign cs3 on  win xp. Recently when I started saving my Indesign files, they are saved with an photoshop icon. Therefore when I double click on the PS icon the computer opens photoshop but does not open the file. It is showing that it is a indd file and I can open it by first launching Indesign and opening it with the Indesign program. That way it opens fine. Has anyone else had this program? Can anyone help?
WV Dan

You need to set indesign as the default program to open files with .indd extension. Various ways to do it but I think you will find one easier than I can tell you, maybe start by right-clicking on an indesign file... then 'open with' etc

  • Opening Indesign CS3 files in Indesign 2.0

Can any one assist in opening Indesign CS3 files in Indesign 2.0 please.
    Many Thanks.

That is not possible. InDesign 2.0 is four versions ago. You can use InDesign Interchange format to get back to CS2 (and if you have CS2, you can use it again to get back to CS, but that's as far as it goes).

  • Converting InDesign CS3 files to Word Files

I am running InDesign CS3 and I need to know the best way to convert an InDesign document to a Word Document 2003.

You might try printing the ID file to PDF, then exporting the PDF from Acrobat to Word. There are still some issues, but Acrobat 8 does a fair job of retaining the formatting and styles. This assumes, of course, that you have Acrobat 8...

  • Opening InDesign CS3 files in InDesign CS2

I know that I can open a CS2 file in CS3 but is there any way to go backwards and open a CS3 file in CS2. Is there any certain file type that I can save as to make this work and have the file still editable or am I out of luck?

And my experience with CS3 to CS2 via INX exports, all graphics inherite a black border. Even graphic elements pasted from Illustrator will gain the nasty effect, pictures box that use to be without stroke and fill will gain the feature.
A lot of cleanning, unless the export quirk was solved since
But beside that the type seems unaltered

  • Cannot open Indesign CS3 file in CC

I have not had this problem before, I've tried other files in case the one I need is corrupt, I always get the same error messages
My ID id up to date. Thanks is advance.
    Regards
    Thorvar

Your sample file opens here just fine (other than missing links and  missing fonts) on CS3, CS6 and CC, which implies either a bad link which  ID is trying to resolve on your end, or a problem in the program.
Make sure you have the ID 9.1 patch installed, and try trashing your preferences. See Replace Your Preferences

  • Indesign CS3 & 10.6.2 server: file corruption

    Hi All,
I'm having problems with one of our customer's setup. They're experiencing some sort of file corruption on Indesign CS3 files. These files are worked on by students in classrooms. At random, files won't open anymore in Indesign CS3 (or in CS4),so they need to start all over again. At first, file corruption occured seldom, but in the last few days I get too many reports. So I definately think something is at hand here.
The students log in to their network home folders. Client and server(s) are mac os x 10.6.2.
Clients / servers are fresh installed last x-mas. 2 fileservers (1 classroom, 1 homedirectory), 1 dedicated od server, 700 students, 45 classes. Both fileservers are new iron.
Before this, I had the same setup in 10.4.11, and this worked flawlessly for almost two years. So I know I can work with this setup over a network.
Before I start suspecting (and swapping) hardware, does anyone have pointers where to look or tests I could do?
    Much appreciated.
    Edgar

Well, going back to 10.4 is not an option. The previous servers (PPC G5 xserves) running the 10.4 setup have been sold. Current hardware was delivered with only 10.6 software so that rules out switching back to 10.5 as well.
You mention ACL's. I could dive into that. Since 10.5 Apple introduced default ACL's for the spotlight indexing process. The share is rather simple, it uses mainly posix permissions because it contains the homedirectories. In that perspective, the only change (besides a new afp stack) is the spotlight ACL. I could remove it, spotlight isn't running on that share.
I don't think I can switch to SMB for the user homedir stuff. If it was a normal data share it wouldn't be a problem.
Seems I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place..

  • Hyperlinks that I create in InDesign CS3 don't work in the PDF

I've created several hyperlinks in an InDesign CS3 file, using the Hyperlinks panel. But when I export to PDF format, the hyperlinks don't work. Even the ones that start with http:// or www. don't work. Is that just the way it is? Or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks,
    Ellen

Is there a button? I don't see anything saying "Hyperlinks" in the Export dialog box. I've attached an image of what I'm seeing.
    Thanks

  • Acrobat 9 pdf links not working from InDesign CS3. What is wrong?

My links are working in my 40 page Indesign CS3 file using Mac. After I convert to a .pdf, some of the links are no longer going to the right location. They have either duplicated other links, or trying to take me incorrectly to my desktop or network. Can't figure out what is wrong.

Links meant to  go to an outside website are supposed to be filled out in the following format : http://www.phillipmjones.net
in Acrobat should look something like :  This is my personal website
In Acrobat go go create you link then click on action:
(I'm using my own personal website as an example)
If you choose something else such as open a file then that is what it does.

  • InDesign CS3 Feathering/Text Error

I am experiencing a strange error when I feather a photo placed in my InDesign CS3 file.
If I feather it in Photoshop and keep a transparent background (PSD or EPS) and don't flatten the image, or if I feather the image directly in Indesign CS3 using the object effects, it causes the font to appear differently (almost thinner).
As soon as I delete the image or flatten the transparency in Photoshop, the font goes back to normal.
Is there a way around this? I'd ultimately like to use the feathering effect directly in InDesign.
    I'd appreciate any advice.
    Thanks!

The use of transparency affects the screen draw in ID, though I've never seen type get thinner, only heavier. This is a known issue, and there is currently nothing you can do to change it. You may continue to see the difference on-screen or in print on a desktop device, but it generally doesn't make it into print on a press.

  • Indesign CS3 - Error Code: 4

I am trying to open an Indesign CS3 file, but every time it crashes Indesign. I tried opening a copy and I get an Error Code: 4. I am running 10.5.6.
It is an important file so I would like to recover the file if possible.

Not sure if this helps but this is what worked for me.

  • Can't open CS3 files in CS5

    Hi guys
New laptop, newly purchased CS5.  I can't open Illustrator CS3 files - all I get is a message saying "An unknown problem has occured"...
InDesign CS5 is fine opening InDesign CS3 files though.  I'm running Lion by the way...
Anyone else got the same problem, and possibly a solution?
    Thanks

CS3 files open in CS5 so that should not be an issue.
If you have Acrobat pro, try using the open command on the .ai file, so we know if the pdf compatible part of the file has useful infomration for you, you could then do a save as using high qulaity settings and open, the .pdf in illustrator.
You may have a corrupt font or image on your system. Disconnect to the images, by putting them all in a folder so the link is temporarily broken. In regards to fonts, turn off any extra fonts, disable font auto activation, and delete any .LST files if you are on a mac.
On the mac if the filename has a "/"  the file will not open. But don't think hat is your problem as you would nto get the error you mentioned. But check your filename for illegal charcters noentheless.

  • InDesign CS3 and OS 10.5.8 Tabloid Print Problem

I recently upgraded my G5 Power PC to OS 10.5 Leopard. Now I am unable to print 11 x 17 documents created in InDesign CS3 without a significant portion of the file beign "cut off" at the header. This also applies to attempts to print the same file, saved as a PDF. 11 x 17 documents created in Ai print fine.
Curiously, the identical InDesign CS3 files print as they should on oversized (Super A3) sheets.

You did an in place upgrade from Tiger to Leopard? Contrary to the propaganda machine in Cupertino this is not a good idea.
Operating system upgrades are best done as clean installs.

  • InDesign CS3 freezing with Vista

Recently upgraded to Vista 32bit. InDesign CS3 files are freezing.  Unable to open files again even after ending program and rebooting computer. Help.

Once I try to open an .indd file, InDesign keeps trying to open it
without success. I have to reboot my computer to get it InDesign to
open. When it does open, it shows all functions but it won't open any
files. Tried moving the Suitcase folder to another location but
couldn't. Had difficulty just getting the fonts to work in the
beginning.  Do you advise uninstalling InDesign and then reinstalling?
Is this a compatibility problem with this version of Vista?  Should I
    consider upgrading to CS4?

  • How to import an Quarkxpress 5 file into Indesign CS3

    Hello,
I am in trouble when  trying to open with Indesign CS3 for windows a file created with Quarkxpress 5 for Mac. Do you have any hint? (file attached)
    thanks for support

The Q2ID plugin is really nice as Bob suggested. If you go through there website they will convert your one document and post it for you to download, email you with the results and a discount code. Well worth the money and a very nice company to work with. I can't say enough nice things about their products.
If you have a newer version of Quark licensed I prefer use their Markztools plugin for Quark to backsave to 4. Seems to be a better conversion with InDesign's Quark import, though that could just be my impression.
