Funny Graphics
I've noticed lately in Photoshop CS3 and in Safari, my main display loses track of where it's at and it's happening more and more often. Moving the cursor over an image without touching it to the image and it gets all messed up. I've only noticed it in the last couple of weeks. The only thing different that's been done to the computer is adding a Wacom tablet.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated,

If you unplug the tablet and replug it does it start working again?
Do you have the tablet plugged into a USB port directly on the motherboard?
We have had problems with sleep. Unfortunately, we can have two identical systems and one will wake up and the other will not. Needless to say this makes it very difficult to try to fix a problem when it is inconsistent. That being said, you want to make sure you don't leave any tools on the tablet when starting up the computer or shutting down or when the computer is not in use.

Start-up error: Fuzzy graphics then freezing
Hi Guys,
I've had my lovely iMac for about a year and a half now, and everything's been fine until recently...
My iMac is having issues starting up properly. Every time I turn it on there's all these funny graphics errors all over the screen, small orange horizontal lines flashing about at random. When the grey apple logo appears that tends to be jittering about as well, all in all looking like some mad graphics error.
However it's still starting up at this point. It usually gets to the log-in screen and then freezes before I can type my password in. If not then, I can type in my password then it'll freeze when I click Ok.
I have to hold the off button to turn it off and restart. Typically after 3 or 4 times of repeating this it works perfectly normal and the Mac seems to know nothing of it happening (no error logs that I can find).
I'm not entirely sure, but it seems to of happened quite recently after I installed 10.4.7 through Software update (no problems with downloading or installing it) - but it's also worth noting that I installed another 1GB of RAM about a month ago, but it was fine until recently.
I've (annoyingly) lost my Hardware Test CD, so I can't tell if it is Hardware issues or Software.
I just think it's odd that it works after a while...

It really sounds to me that you have a bad video board. Since you do not have the CD to run the test I would take it in to your Apple Store.
Before you do that, check to see if you are covered under the Repair Extention Program. You iMac is the right vintage to be one of the ones effected. Mine was so I took it in and had it back with a new midplane and power supply in just three days. No problems since. -
My Lenovo randomly puts in funny graphics, primarily when using outlook...see top of outlook bar in graphic above.

Problems with driver for ATI xpress 200
Hi all,
this morning I saw that there is KDE4 available. Straight away I installed the packages, run it and it crashed. There was a funny graphical effect just before the crash. This gave me the impression that the problems comes from the graphical driver. I tried the proprietary ATI driver which hangs once kdm is launched. Then I tried VESA which doesn't even start for some funny reason. Eventually I turned to the open source ATI drivers. With them I'm running KDE in resolution 1280x768 which is somewhat strange. So far, I haven't found a solution and think I need a help.

BOOT ROM VERSION ISSUES WITH MINI MAC POWERPC G4 (1.2)

I AM HAVING SOME BOOT PROBLEMS ON REBUILDING MY MAC MINI. WHENEVER I PUT IN A BRAND NEW COPY OF EITHER PANTHER OR TIGER THE BOOT SCREEN WITH THE APPLE LOGO CRASHES AND FUNNY GRAPHICS APPEARS, RESULTING IN A FORCED REBOOT AND USING F12 TO EJECT THE CD. THE MAC MINI IS FINE BOOTING OFF OF ITS OWN MANUFACTURE CD, WHICH IS A COPY OF PANTHER, BUT WON'T UPGRADE WITH ANY TIGER DISKS. I HAVE EVEN MANAGED TO CHANGE THE DISKS WITH SOMEBODY ELSE WHO WAS SUCCESSFUL IN UPGRADING TO TIGER.
I HAVE LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND OTHER PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY MENTIONED THAT I SHOULD CHANGE/UPDATE MY BOOT ROM VERSION FROM 4.8.9F1 TO 4.9.8F4.
DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN GET THIS BOOT ROM UPDATE? I HAVE LOOKED ON APPLE DOWNLOADS, BUT NOTHING APPEARS TO HELP. ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS APPREACIATED.

First, a word of etiquette, writing your post in ALL CAPS is considered the same thing as yelling. Please don't use ALL CAPS when writing your messages.
Exactly which Mac mini do you have? Is it a G4 Mac mini running at 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 or 1.5GHz? (If it came with Panther install disks, it couldn't be an Intel Mac mini.) Which version of Mac OS X came with your Mac mini? Some of the earlier Mac minis shipped with Mac OS X 10.3.7 and will not startup from any earlier version (most of the retail copies of Panther are 10.3.0 or 10.3.4). If it's a Mac mini that shipped later, it would have come with Mac OS X 10.4.2 and, again, won't startup from any earlier version (most retail copies of Tiger were 10.4.0 but now have 10.4.4). Trying to startup from a disk that's the wrong version will usually cause a "kernel panic" and force you to restart.
So, if your Mac mini shipped with Mac OS X 10.3.7, you should be able to use any retail copy of Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) to update your computer. However, you won't be able to update to 10.4 from the install disk that came with another Mac. You will need to buy a retail copy of your own.
There are no firmware updates available to download to upgrade the "Boot ROM" on your G4 Mac mini, so that option is really not available.

possibly any more. Only alternative is to get iMovie HD6
or FinalCut any version where You can add Plug-ins at Your liking.

Here is the link to another thread where I explained the problem i was having. I thought it might have been linked to FCP, which is why I posted it there. I completely uninstalled and reinstalled FCP to no avail. I tried repairing the disk permissions. Nothing. I even tried dumping the FCP preferences. Absolutley a waste of time.

Success story: NVIDIA 8600M GT graphics card defect repaired at no cost
This is the story of Apple servicing my MacBook Pro with the NVIDIA graphics card defect.
I had the NVIDIA 8600M GT graphics card defect in my 2 year old MacBook Pro. The symptoms were pinkish images, scrambled and chopped images, and finally leading to no video, all within a matter of 3 days. I called AppleCare using the old number I remembered from my 100mhz Mac days: 1-800-SOS-APPLE. I was greeted by a real person within 3 minutes. She explained that my 90-day complimentary phone service had expired some 600 days ago.
After I mentioned the specific Apple Knowledge base article that described the defect (TS2377), and that it was covered up to three years out of warranty, she transferred me to a MacBook Pro specialist. Sheri ran me through several standard resets and reboots. She then suggested that it be taken into an Apple store for a genius to look at. When I explained that the nearest Apple Store was an hour away, she arranged for a mail-in service.
After the call had ended, I received a simple email with her phone number so that I could contact her if I needed to. Another automated email contained my repair case number and a link to check the status online. The online status center is very easy to use. It displayed three steps: Sending the empty box, service in progress and return. FedEx tracking numbers were included with working links.
The next day an empty box arrived, completely with graphical IKEA like packaging instructions and form fitting foam for my MacBook Pro. I knew when the FedEx truck came around, so I had my computer ready by my side. As soon as FedEx showed up, I explained that the empty box was for the computer and Marcos helped me apply the pre-paid return label and taped the box expertly with tape from his truck. I also placed in the box a copy of the Apple Knoweldge base article and pictures I had taken of the issue.
Apple had included a small stack of super adhesive pre-cut tape square, but Macros was already taping it before I figured out what they were. The return label was also pre-paid with overnight service.
The next day I logged into the online support status at Apple.com and checked my status. The tracking number showed it had arrived in Houston, and the three steps had been updated to "Repairs completed" and "Return in progress."
The return FedEx tracking number was displayed later in the evening, and it showed that it was guaranteed to arrive by 10:30AM the next day. Speedy service! Sure enough, the next day I had my computer back in my hands, all data perfect and intact. I was very worried since I was not able to make a back up before sending it in, and Apple does not guarantee data safety. Apple had replaced the logic board, valued at $700 on iFixit (http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Core-2-Duo-2-2-GHz-Logic -Board/IF185-073).
The funny thing is, for the past 5 years, I have always cloned my drive or used time machine, but for the past two months I had cleared the backups to make up extra room on my externals. You really never know when disaster will strike!

- Apple Customer Care is top notch, speedy and their status site is very easy to use
- FedEx service was very helpful
- If you have a NVIDIA graphics card, Mac or PC, check if your model is affected. Just today Sony announced that NVIDIA cards with defects will now be covered for 4 years out of warranty. (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-10307592-64.html)
- Back up your stuff NOW. Use a flash drive or email files to yourself for a cheap fix.

also no video within 5 hours .... also no external video.
lucky i had screen sharing on so i could check the system profiler via an other mac.
It couldn't find the 6800M GT anymore...
did another backup and went to the local apple store
took a print out of Apple Knowledge base article that described the defect (TS2377)
and they replaced the logicboard+gpu for free within 10 days ...
everything is ok now except for my maxmsp copy which thinks it runs on an other machine and complains about a missing licence .... -
Sudden problem between iMovie and my Graphics Card?
Hello all-
Please forgive any omissions, first time posting.
I'm running Tiger 10.4.9 on a G4 iMac Desktop, 800 MHz w 768 MBram.
My graphics info is apparently: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX:
I only recently had iMovie HD 6.0.3 start displaying an alert message detailing it's requirement of a 'Quartz Extreme Compatible' graphics card. This is news to me, since I've been using this version of iMovie since October 06 without this alert cropping up. So this seems Out Of The Blue.
Funny thing: I've booted the computer from the Tiger startup disk a couple of times since this error began - to check if a disk repair is needed - and with each assisted reboot the graphics card is correctly recognized/supported... once. One unassisted boot. After which it reverts to 'Quartz Extreme Compatible' unsupported once again.
I swung the problem briefly past a genius at a MacGenius bar, who felt the problem was probably not the card itself going bad, (as she thought the card would fail entirely if it was having problems) but either corrupted software in the system, or a HardDrive problem. I have no other evidence that my HD might be failing, so I'm left with her other advice, to do an Archive and Install.
Honestly, nothing's been installed or updated recently. If I had to guess, it
-may- have started after Quicktime failed to play an .avi file off CD this week, but I can't be sure, as I hadn't tried HD for a little while before then. Could QT bombing out have corrupted a system file?
Would you also suggest an Archive and Install? And what sort of system clean-up can I expect after such a procedure? Is there a less radical fix?

I am running a G-4, 1.25 Gz, 2 gigs ram, running 10.4.9, and a Radeon 9800 pro graphics card. I am having the same problems. I have tried the solutions mentioned here and still have the same problem. I am EXTREMELY angry right now [and resisting the urge to use MUCH stronger words], but I think my ThinkPad will ACTUALLY COME BACK FIXED THIS TIME!
My ThinkPad is going to be sent to competent technicians! YAY! Not the piece of crap technicians that have screwed with my laptop the past two times, REAL TECHNICIANS that will completely disassemble my laptop and test every component!
ThinkPad Service: Quick, but UNEFFECTIVE!
Here's my fun little history with my ThinkPad T60p!

- 3 year depot warranty [THANK THE LORD, I know from the problems I've had I'm going to need it frequently]
Initial Issues:
When I first received my laptop, I was overjoyed! It was extremely fast [once I removed the IBM bloatware], had a powerful GPU [no problems with Oblivion ], and ran quiet.
About 4 months in [December 2007?], my fan began making some noise, but it wasn't terribly noisy. Occasionally [usually when moving it] the fan became louder, but my system ran just fine. I also noticed that the ThinkPad froze on a reboot at the BIOS screen occasionally, but I cannot remember if this happened before the fan problem, or after. Since this was the middle of the college school year, I did not send in my laptop. It ran fine, and was still cool.
First issue:
Last month, my hard drive began to die. I rebooted Windows, and it stayed at the Windows loading screen (with the blue bar). A quick hard drive test in the BIOS revealed that my hard drive was failing, but I managed to easily back up all of my files using a Linux LiveCD. I decided that I would deal with the fan problem at the same time, since I figured I would need to send my laptop in.
The nice people in the Atlanta, Georgia facility (they are all very nice there) offered to send me the hard drive, but upon mentioning the fan problem, decided that I should send the laptop in. The next day, my box arrived, and I shipped it the day after that.
Laptop "Fixed"?:
I have heard horror stories of the laptops some of my college friends received back from depots, but none of them had ThinkPads! I purchased mine BECAUSE it had excellent support (not outsourced ), and that ThinkPads are built tough (or so I thought!).
So, I get my computer back, and, before opening the package, I think:
"I have a weird feeling. I bet they didn't fix the fan. If they didn't, I am going to be SO angry."
So, I open it, and I read the paper filled out by the technician (who I would LOVE to name here, but I'm sure that's illegal):
"Replaced hard drive"
I immediately dismiss all negative thoughts, because it's ThinkPad technical support! They wouldn't ignore the ENTIRE REASON I sent the laptop to them in the first place! I could have easily replaced the hard drive myself. No, the fan must have been such a small issue that it wasn't worth noting. A doubt did remain in my mind though.
I plugged in my laptop, turned her on, heard a LOUDER THAN BEFORE noise, and saw, printed on my screen:

My fan had completely failed. It was never replaced. I would LOVE to talk to this technician, and hear what "testing" he did with my laptop. It couldn't even boot, but he claimed it passed PC Doctor testing! How can you test it, when it can't boot? And, even if it did boot, how could you ignore the LOUD fan? I wanted him to come to my house, and TELL ME my laptop was fixed.
I called up the folks in Atlanta, Georgia again, and tried to restrain my anger. I work in the Helpdesk of my college, and I don't want to be angry at the nice people working there. I was only angry at the INCOMPETENT technician.
I verified with them that the fan error was reported on my previous case number, so it was the technician's fault. They set me up with a new case number, and I received the prepaid box the next day [last friday]. Since the fan was the only problem, I figured that it would easily be solved, and I would go on my merry way. I sent it back to them on the same day, and they received it on Saturday.
They fixed it over the weekend, and I received it on Monday. Now, that's what I call service! Or, do I?
Fixed at last?:
I open up the box, put the battery back in, plug in the AC adapter, and turned it on. First thing I heard: silence. The fan was replaced! It was quiet again! I installed XP Pro over the preloaded XP Home, configured it to my liking, and installed some programs. Everything was great! Since the service was so fast, I was ready to forgive lenovo, and move on! Happy ending, right?
NO! TERRIBLE ENDING! My ThinkPad is worse than ever!
Today, I decided to install the PC game "The Suffering" and play it on my 27" LCD TV/monitor. It's the first time I have gamed on my laptop in two weeks, since I had to wait that long for those two cases to be resolved. I boot it up, pump up the graphics settings (<3 FireGL), and begin the game.
At first, I noticed that the game was stuttering a bit. I figured that 6x antialiasing might have been pushing my graphics card to the limit, and noted to change it after saving for the first time. I save the game, go to quit the game, and my laptop TURNS OFF.
Yes, it turned off. No blue screen. It just DIED. I have never experienced anything like it before.
I turned on the computer, and, like usual, it froze at the BIOS. I turned it off, turned it on, and Windows XP didn't even know it wasn't shut down safely. It started without a hitch. This time, I decided to detach my external monitor, USB keyboard, and USB mouse, and play with just the ThinkPad. I turned down the antialiasing, started up the game, and noticed that it was still stuttering. A minute later, my ThinkPad turns off.
I become incredibly angry. My computer's GPU cannot even handle a simple game without killing my computer! I take deep breaths, and decide to install Oblivion, and see if that works. After all, maybe the game is just a piece of crap? I boot up my ThinkPad, it freezes at the BIOS, I turn it off, I turn it on, boot to Windows, and my keyboard isn't working. The ThinkPad FN combinations work [for example, I can turn on the ThinkLight with FN+PgUp, and I can turn on Num Lock with FN+Pause], but nothing else does. I reboot Windows, and the keyboard works as normal. Then, I did a quick Google search on the game I was playing, and nobody had the problem I was experiencing. But, it could have been a hardware incompatibility, right?
No. Wrong answer. I start up Oblivion, and it stutters IN THE BEGINNING CELL. It's an indoor scene. My computer usually has 0 slowdown in indoor areas in Oblivion. There is graphical glitching at the top of the screen. Then, my computer turns off. I become insanely angry. I use this laptop A LOT. I depend on it for MANY THINGS. I bought a ThinkPad because they are supposed to be RELIABLE. I should be able to have this thing turned on 24/7 with a 100% CPU load and have NO PROBLEMS.
I called up the people in Atlanta, Georgia about an hour ago (11:30PM EST), and calmly vented. I told my entire story, and the guy there was very understanding. Since this is the DAMNED THIRD CONSECUTIVE TIME I HAVE TO SEND MY LAPTOP IN, my case is going to be sent to ACTUAL COMPETENT TECHNICIANS who can FIX MY LAPTOP rather than completely screw it over when fixing a GOD **bleep** FAN. While I have no evidence that the second technician screwed up everything else, I NEVER had a problem with the GPU. And, since the first technician didn't have to take apart the laptop to replace the hard drive, I have no one else to blame. I believe it is a heating problem, so the second technician was probably the culprit, since he installed a new cooling fan in the upper left hand corner of the ThinkPad.
I was assured that my ThinkPad would be completely disassembled, and have every **bleep** component tested before I received it back. I am HOPING that this is the case. If I get another broken laptop back, I will even cuss to the nice people in Atlanta. My patience is already gone, and I don't even know how ludicrous I'll be if I have to get it fixed a fourth time. The only downside to this is that I may have to wait five days to get it repaired. If I do, and it's not fixed, I will demand a brand new laptop, and a renewed three year warranty beginning the day I receive the new laptop.
I paid for ThinkPad quality. If this is how ThinkPads are built, I am EXTREMELY disappointed. I expected that I would be able to treat this thing like a mature desktop -- leaving it on for weeks at a time, playing games at high graphics settings, and frequently having it use 100% of its CPU -- but I was wrong.

[PS: I also have one dead pixel now. It travels to different parts of the screen. I used a program that can get rid of such pixels, and it worked for about an hour. Then, the pixel returned. I am SO happy with my laptop right now, I could just die.]

Thanks for the confirmation of the technicians' ineptitude. The temperature tests confirmed for me that the problem is as you described, and I'm happy to hear the problem may be as simple, and common, as that. I'm wondering now if the technicians are put under an immense amount of stress and forced to be productive, or if they are really as incapable as they seem. I think I'll call the factory a day or so after they receive the laptop, and see if they can tell me whether or not the previous technician failed to install the fan properly. Then, I will ask the employee about the working conditions there. I doubt they will tell me the truth, but it can't hurt.
Thanks to this forum, I know that I can curse the Solectron company for sucking ass, despite the ThinkPad's excellent warranty. I wish there is something more I can do to improve the situation. I think it's funny that they run "PC Doctor" tests after replacing a fan that cools the GPU. If they just ran ANY 3D game on my card [or any application that stresses the GPU], they would realize that the fan was installed incorrectly.
This time, I am including a typed letter to the "high level" "technicians" "working" on my laptop that describes all of the problems with it in checklist form, and how to reproduce them. I will make sure that they can reproduce all of these things with software already installed on the computer. I will earnestly request that they be fixed. I doubt it will do anything, but it's the least I can do to make their job easier.
*sigh* Not knowing who or what to blame is making my job harder. I don't know whether to pity the technicians, or loathe them. :/ -
T520 - 42435gg / Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance with Intel Rapid Storage AHCI Driver

I have serious Problems with my 42435gg
Any time I install the Intel Storage AHCI Driver (I've tried plenty of different versions) which is suggested by System Update I experience a horrible Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance in Windows 7 64-Bit.
The funny thing in this case: If the external e-sata port is connected the problems do not occur. If the port is unused again, the stutter begins immediately.
The only thing I can do is using the Windows internal Storage Driver with which I am not able to use my DVD recorder for example.
The device was sent to lenovo for hardware testing with no result. It was sent back without any repairing.
Anybody experience on this?

Live Type graphics interfering with audio on playback to output monitor
New to Mac, so bare with me.
When I drop live type graphics in timeline and play with the built in audio, plays fine. When I output it to mini dv to record via firewire, and hit play the audio is fine till the timeline marker goes past the end of the graphic, then the audio drops out for a few seconds, then its o.k. again. This happens on every graphic, no exceptions. Now the audio is coming through the NTSC speakers.
Funny thing though, we I play back the recorded tape, the audio plays fine.
The audio also plays fine on the built in speakers. Onlu when outputted to firewire to the mini dv.
This is very annoying.
Can someone help please?
Using a LaCie 500 gig firewire drive, via the 800 firewire port.

Another pdf export problem with graphics missing
well, it seems that there have been quite a few export probs w/pdf.
i created some somewhat complex graphic files (wine labels) using keynote. then transfered them over to pages so that i would be able to print them
more easily. when transfering them to pdf files i lose some graphics.
the graphics that i lose are chinese characters...but only SOME of them.
i've tried pdf/x, still the same problem, but then i have that funny shaded
box around my letters.
i've tried exporting directly from keynote, but the pdf image is markedly
smaller than the oringinal document (with the comments hidden).
any ideas...even the genius bar is stumped.
macbook Mac OS X (10.4.8)In general, if some Chinese characters behave in one way and some other ones in another, it is often because one uses the wrong kind of font. If you for example have the (simplified) character 话 and use a font for traditional Chinese it may sometimes fail - especially in MS Word.
That said, I cannot reproduce your particular problem here. Both Keynote and Pages seem to handle this as well as they possibly can for me.
Two things you can try:
1. Change font, to make sure that it matches the character.
2. Create another account on your Mac and see if you still have the same problem.
What did the characters look like? Any fancy formatting with shadows or colours? -

- As far as the Java code goes, you will get a much better chance of help if you..
a) Post an SSCCE (<- link), rather than random code snippets that you think encapsulate the problem. Let's face it, you don't know the answer, and until you do, you cannot be sure the fix is to be found in the code snippets you post. Can you?
b) Post code in between code tags to retain the formatting and indentation. To do that, select the code and click the CODE button on the Plain Text tab of the message posting form.Easy there tiger, this is not a netbeans problem, so he is in the right place.
The code does look to be SSCCE or close anyways (remove the ... lines and if it still compiles and run I would say this is SSCCE).
The code tags is a huge problem here though. I am trying to read it without getting a headache, best as I can tell the OP seems to be doing some really funny stuff with paint. Like is he overriding paint to paint a square? That can't be good!

I am in need of a link to the graphic, which shows the benefits of loading JavaScript libraries external to the database/application. I have it somewhere but I cannot find it. I need it because my companies IT staff insist that I load jQuery into the database and server it from the pages. As you all know, this is terribly inefficient.
The staff here, in the name of security has recommended that I redirect to one of our privileged file servers, I am unable to get them to understand what we require and why their technique will not work.
Any assistance finding some type of graphical representation would be a great help to me. My team has several applications that are ready to deploy but the jQuery lives completely as static files inside our database. If we had decent network performance, I could live with that but it takes 5 times for a page to load here as it does anywhere else on Earth.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm looking to build up a large set of supporting documentation, for some reason, our service provider is just not understanding things and I am not allowed to provide specifics related to why it is so much more important to have "jQuery" and some other related JavaScript outside of the workspace. They even suggested that I stick the entire jQuery script and related css in each page header. That was so funny that I wanted to laugh, but then I wanted to cry.
A one or two page chart/graph is about all that they can handle, I'm scared to give them this 73 page document and expect them to read it or even attempt to absorb what they have read.
