Further Password Protection
Hey everyone,
First of all I want to congratulate Apple on the new Apple TV Take2. Great update indeed.
Now, one thing I would like to request is an extension of the password protection in the parental controls. Specifically a way to require input of password to come out of screen saver. or a way to limit access to any and all videos without entering the password.
The reason for this would be to limit the ability of my small children (3 & 5yrs) from snagging the remote and paroozing trailers, movies etc. without mine or my wife's knowledge. We don't have anything bad on our appleTV, but some of our movies would be scary for our young kids to see.
I do understand this is not a fail safe method, but my young kids have ended up seeing trailers that were not good (horror) by accident.
The method we have used thus far is to just change the input on the TV and hide the remote but it's kind of annoying as the appleTV is our primary input for the TV. If this feature could be considered for further updates I would be exceedingly grateful.
Thanks,
Brad

I have other members of my family use my iPad for educational/recreational use, young children who may want to play kid games. I don't want them to accdently get into my data stored in the three business apps from apple. I would like to password protect these files.
I would also like to log out of the email systems that I use, so some one else can use this device to access their own emails. By leaving my accounts open al the time, is really asking for trouble from a host of sources.
I can't believe that the iPad is not designed to protect the privacy and data from prying eyes ... Un intuitional as it may be.
Please fix this issue so I create my info on this device and enjoy it fully. Or tell me how I can protect my data.
Thnax.Thanx for your response. Any data stored anywhere should be able to be protected from stealing, malicious destruction or unintentional destruction. Theo ad an be stolen and without any kind ofpassword protection, the thief could get into your sensitive data.
If Apple wants iPad to become a business tool that can be used with ideas, thots, data protected, then Apple needs to provide this protection to it's customers. Now it's unto the users to use it or not.
I know iPad is being considered to be used by doctors, and can u imagine the confidentiality requirements of HIPPA rules... It will make this device not usable without data protection. I am sureweall have heard about hacking going on at all levels. It's surprising that this device's software is left unprotected.
My iPad may be sitting on my desk and my 3 year old grand daughter would pick it up and start "playing" with it. That means I can't store anything on this machine that may possibly be changed.
I have discussed this with specialists in apple stores, and those who have been around info technology understand my concerns and they may forward this request further up. They do not have the answer for it..... So far.
I think data security should be everyone's concern... Be it a one person device or multiple user device.
I hope that some responsible people at Apple would read this and provide the protection that will make this device lot more acceptable in the business world. -
Trying to create a password protected disk image in 10.8.4
Trying to create a password protected disk image in 10.8.4. I follow steps in Apple:Support but I get an error saying "Resource busy"?
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Simplest way to password protect an external drive??
I want to clone my Macbook onto an external drive - I don't want to have to turn on filevault - never used it - i would ideally like to password protect the "Macintosh HD" icon on the external drive.... is there a really simple way to do this?
Well, whenever I want to password protect anything, I just encrypt it using disk utility.
After opening Disk Utility, go to File, New, Blank Disk Image. Then you select how much space you'd like to take up with the encrypted folder (you have to preset the size of the folder anticipating further change). The folder can be made on your main HD or Flash drive or external HD. It offer 256bit encryption but the folder can still be deleted by anyone with access to it even without the password. -

kengHi Randy,
Thank you for looking into my problem.
I have looked into the Workbook.open property node. There is "password" on the property node. Please see attached diagrams.
Is is the right way to do it?
Please advise further.
For your information, the Excel workbook and sheet 1 are password protected.
Thanks,

Can you password protect your email so when you want to access any of your mail accounts you must enter a password? In other words before I can see my mail I must enter a password.

IPhoto - MobileMe gallery subscription - problem with password-protected
I am having a peculiar problem with subscribed galleries from MobileMe in iPhoto 08 and iPhoto 09. For galleries that have password-protection enabled, the full URL of the gallery subscription feed is pulled through as the Subscription title instead of the gallery title.
For example "http://gallery.e.com/ACCOUNT-NAME/XXXXXX/?webdav-method-truthget&depth=infinit y&feedfmt=atom....
This doesn't occur for public MobileMe galleries. The title of the gallery comes across and the URL of the subscription is hidden.
Anyone having similar problems? Local Genius Bar couldn't help and assumed it was just a bug, but it doesn't seem to be typical of Apple.
As an aside, it would also be nice to have these feed subscriptions behave similarly to the way RSS subscriptions work in Mail, with the ability to select how often the feed is queried and indicate the number of new items. This would alert users of changes to feeds.
JoeUpon further research, it appears that this problem occurs when publishing from either iPhoto or Aperture to MobileMe. The problem seems to be when a gallery is published and one chooses not to have the gallery appear on the main gallery page (hidden). It seems to have nothing to do with whether or not one protects the gallery with a password.
So, Apple, if you are listening, can you provide any information on how to have the title of the gallery come through when subscribing using iPhoto while at the same time not listing the gallery on the main MobileMe gallery page? This seems to be a fixable bug. -
Internet Explorer will not open a password-protected webpage
I've asked this question in the General Discussion forum but
did not find a solution. I am using DW8.0.2 / MySQL 4.1 / PHP5.1 to
create PHP login and restricted access webpages. Locally (i.e.
Windows XP / IIS5.0), they all function properly no matter what
browser I use. However, on my ISP's server that running Linux /
Apache, Internet Explorer 6.x or 7.x will not open the
password-protected webpages - all the other php pages open and
function properly. I can use Opera, Netscape, or Firefox and the
pw_protected webpages open fine - just not in IE.
I've tried cookies on / off, popup blocker on / off, and
changed my PHP login scripting - all to no avail. Any one have any
ideas why IE won't open a PHP-scripted pw-protected webpage while
all other browsers can?Thanks for your suggestion. I've added the site to IE's
Trusted Zone... but no luck. And to test further, I've turned off
EVERY 'disable' feature I could in IE and still no joy.
Could the problem be how IE proceses (or doesn't process) my
PHP logon scripts and possibly does not pass the session on to
Apache (the server is a Linux box running Apache)? I'm enclosing my
scripts for review and hopefully for a discovery of why this is
happening only in IE and not the other browsers.
Here is my logon script:
<?php
// *** Start the session
session_start();
// *** Validate request to log in to this site.
$FF_LoginAction = $HTTP_SERVER_VARS['PHP_SELF'];

$row_FF_rsUser = mysql_fetch_assoc($FF_rsUser);

exit;
mysql_free_result($FF_rsUser);
session_register("FF_login_failed");
$FF_login_failed = true;
header ("Location: $FF_redirectLoginFailed");
exit;
?>
And here is the script that appears on each restricted
webpage:
<?php
// *** Restrict Access To Page: Grant or deny access to this

$FF_authorizedUsers=" edit";
$FF_authFailedURL="access_error.html";
$FF_grantAccess=0;

Unlock password protected, reader extended document
Hi,
I'm trying to unlock/remove password on a password protected and reader extended document in a long lived process. Below is the workflow description
A batch process that fires periodically to send service feedback forms to customers.
Long lived process to Gather data ---> Render Dynamic pdf ---> Password Protect (to disable printing and extracting pages) ---> Reader Extend (for saving edited pdf on client machine) ---> Send Email to customer.
Long lived process to Receive feedback via Email endpoint --> Remove/Unlock (?) password ---> Extract data from PDF ---> further operations to update data in tables.
My findings:
Remove PDF Password Encryption (Failed here) ---> Extract data
Error: ALC-ENC-100-005 You cannot change security on this document because the document is signed or certified or reader extended.: ALC-ENC-100-005 You cannot change security on this document because the document is signed or certified or reader extended.
Remove Usage Rights ---> Remove PDF Password Encryption ---> Extract data == SUCCESS
Unlock Password Encrypted PDF ----> Extract Data (Failed here)
Error: com.adobe.internal.pdftoolkit.core.exceptions.PDFSecurityAuthorizationException: Security Manager for decryption is not set: com.adobe.livecycle.formdataintegration.client.ExportFormDataException: com.adobe.internal.pdftoolkit.core.exceptions.PDFSecurityAuthorizationException: Security Manager for decryption is not set
Remove Usage Rights ---> Unlock PDF Password ---> Extract data (Failed here)

I see that the "Unlock Passwod Encrypted PDF" service works fine in Short Lived Process. I'm unable to make it work in Long Lived process. Can someone please explain this behavior? Why is the limitation to Unlock PDF Password service to work only in short lived process?
Thanks,
SandeepSandeep,
Is your intention to remove the password encryption or just extract data from it?
If you want to remove password encryption then you should first remove the usage rights and then remove pass encryption
If you want to just extract data from it - You can create a short lived subprocess that has unlock PDF password and extract data which should work fine (Ensure that unlock and extract are in a short lived process)
In case of long lived process when you unlock PDF password - the PDf gets unlocked and will be saved - and if you try to extract data it would fail because you need to unlock it again.

I am running Pages v5.2 on my iOS and wanted to know if my password protected pages documents were encrypted. If not, what might be the best way to go about doing this?
Thank you,
PatrickPassword protect, compress, and apply 256-bit AES encryption to a Pages v5.2 document
Using the File menu in Pages v5.2, password protect your document
Do not check keep in keychain, if you always want the password prompt, even if it is you on the same computer. Otherwise, your local keychain will automatically unlock the document when opened.
Keep a record of that password
Create a new folder (e.g. Pagesv5-encrypted)Place your document into this folder
Launch /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
File > New > Disk Image from Folder
Navigate in the File Chooser to your folder with the Pages v5 documentSingle-click the folder, and then click Image
A New Image from Folder dialog appears
Pick the new location for your compressed, encrypted folder
Put a tag color on it if you use one for security content
Image Format: compressed
Encryption: 256-bit AES
Save
Provide a password, and keep it in a safe placeSame consideration about the keychain as in 1.1
OK
For a single text file, this process will be over in about 5 seconds. You now have a compressed, encrypted disk image. When you double-click it, it will want password validation to open the disk image on your Desktop. Once open, you will need to provide the password to further open the Pages document(s). The disk image mounts to your Desktop just like removeable media. You right-click on the disk image bearing the folder name, and choose eject. The original compressed, encrypted disk image (dmg) is untouched. -

Is there any way to reset phone? It keeps asking for administrative password, would even consider reformatting and installing os if that's an option.

I suggest going to IVR menu. Then press **** (four asterisks). Then 3. Then 4 for factory reset and end with #.
Hope this helps,

Password Protected Locked Layer?
As a photographer, we are very protective of our creations. I have an image that I took for a client, that needs some Photoshop clean-up work, that will probably take me 15~30 minutes to complete, and I plan on billing my client for my labor. However, when I mentioned this work to my client, they told me that they can't afford my price (which isn't that much), and that they'd like to have a family member who is a "Photoshop expert" do the work, instead of me, and then give me the image, so that I can send it to my lab for printing. I can't imagine having the image out of my control, where it could be printed by them, posted to Facebook or shared with others, so this option really doesn't sit very well with me!
I like to do what I can to make my clients happy, but may not be able to in this instance. However, what I was thinking, although I believe that I already know the answer, is adding a password protected, locked layer with my low opacity watermark over the image. Unfortunately, I can't think of anyway to achieve this password protecting of a layer. Sure I can lock a layer, but it can be turned off at will.
Can any one out there think of any other options or solutions, that will allow me to give my image to a client, and ensure that my watermark/copyright remain visible on the image during the entire time that they're editing it?We can only make conclusions based on what little you have described. GIGO.
We're only left to addressing the foolishness of the shoot as there is nothing that can further be said about a ridiculous hope of software. Do we recognize the silliness in supposing that you could supply a file that is both editable and not editable?
Adobe already offers some security options in PDF files (preventing copying, printing, editing, opening, etc), which are easily defeated. Hold your breath to wait for this stunningly ineffective technology to make it to other Adobe apps.
As this is such an issue for you, it may be time to reevaluate the business model of prints as a significant portion of your service. Home computers and Walmart's in-store photo printer have replaced most of your service, even if you forced the client to sign a piece of paper vowing not to duplicate. Photographers really need to focus on and charge appropriately for the craft of photography (like employing guards on windy, rainy days) and not try to be intellectual property managers for an end product that they really cannot control anymore.
You can enter feature requests here and then wait a year or so for the release cycle. How soon does your client need prints? -
How to disable password protection for Onenote 2013
I have been trying for a while to disable the ability for users to password protect a section in Onenote 2013.
I need to have access to all users onenote notebooks within the organization.
I have tried HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\OneNote\General\PasswordProtectionDisabled = 1 and it didn't work.
I tried the above solution on the 2010 version and it worked, but instead of it being 15.0 it was 14.0.
I would greatly appreciate any kind of help.Hi,

Password Protect folders (non sparse disk image)
So there are a collection of files I have protected on my computer using the disk utility method that everyone asking this question uses. I am curious to know if there is any other way of doing it. I want to password protect a folder within this protected disk image just becuase i feel like being extra sneaky and careful at the moment. I mean I could just use another sparse disk image inside the original and use two different passwords but I'm trying to be creative and that could get confusing. Does anyone know of a way to password protect a folder or file without using the disk utility method in Lion? Even if it requires third party stuff

From your earlier posts I gather that you would like to have a high level of security for your data. If an encrypted folder does not do the job for you, you may want to consider FileVault. However, if you use FileVault there are to very important measures you must take: 1) You must remember your password. If you lose or forget your password you will lose aceess to your data permanently. There is no way around it. 2) You must leave adequate space to be able to disable FileVault, should you every need to do so. The encrypted sparseimage requires almost double the size of the image to be able to be expanded.

Password protect a file beyond disk image?
Hi,
I've made a password protected disk image file, but once it's opened the file can be opened without a password every time.
Is there a way to password-protect a file, so that every time you try to open it, it requires a password? (like the way you can encrypt a PDF...)
Thanks!nails:
