Further process of photos in Photoshop

Adjusted photos in Lightroom cannot be further processed in Photoshop. The Lightroom function "process in Photoshop" opens Photoshop, however, Photos are not displayed.

  • Aperture = iPhoto + Bridge Photo Downloader + Photoshop?

I am considering to use Aperture to streamline my workflow but I wonder about its file management capability. Let me explain the details:
I love iPhoto to browse, find and preview photos. It provides the most intuitive, easy and fast way for that. The interface is also nice. The photo-editing capability is negligible for me as I use Photoshop for this.
But I really hate the way it manages imported photos as Rolls and keep everything hidden under the 'Package'. So instead, I use Adobe's Bridge Photo Downloader from Photoshop to download photos from my cameras/iPhone and I set it to organize the files into folders: year/year-month/date-time of the photos taken. Then I'd import them to iPhoto - but without copying the originals. So basically I create a Reference Library for my iPhoto. I then tag/assigning Keywords the photos accordingly (I have plenty of keywords assigned). I sometimes create Events or Albums too - especially great for showing photos on my computer to friends and family.
Photoshop is set as the external app to edit photos so from iPhoto I can open the file in Photoshop (which I have been using for all my photo editing needs including RAW).
From what I gathered so far, Aperture seems to be a more efficient alternative to process RAW photos, and I've been wanting to find an alternative to the iPhoto-Bridge-Photoshop method above. Basically I need a Photo App that can do all the following:
    1. Import original photos from cameras/iPhone and then automatically organize them chronologically (in folders of year/year-month/date-time of the photo taken) a la Bridge's Photo Downloader
    2. Tag/Keywords, create Events and Albums, and to Preview photos quickly a la iPhoto
    3. Edit RAW files without harming the original files a la Photoshop
I wonder whether Aperture is suitable for the usage I described above?
Thanks in advance for any inputs!

    Hi freefire,
So Aperture can import photosfrom cameras/iPhone and automatically organize, rename and save them into folders outside of Aperture Library?
You can rename files on each import. However, saving files is not Aperture's job. If you put the files wherever you want, and then import them into Aperture as referenced images, they stay where they are.
Alternately, and this would be much more tedious, you could import them all into Aperture as managed photos, and then use Aperture to "relocate masters" to somewhere else. That's sort of like two steps where one (my first paragraph) would suffice.
If you want to organize photos by year, that is the job of Aperture. However, that is the job of Aperture *within the confines of Aperture*. Aperture is built primary to help you organize your photos within its database. You can make smart albums to show you every photo from 2010, for instance. That smart album is meaningless in Finder because it is not a primary function of Aperture to help you organize outside of Aperture. Basically, if you want to use Aperture to make directory structures for Finder, you aren't using Aperture in the most effective way.
When I edit a RAW file in Photoshop, Photoshop keeps the new setting within the RAW file itself without creating new file and I can go back and make further changes or revert back to original state - all in the file itself.
Are you sure about that? I thought Photoshop used the sidecar XMP files for that sort of thing. I'm no expert, but there's generally no provision in the file formats (including RAW files) for "this is how you undo something." I don't use Photoshop like that, but it sounds fishy that Photoshop will choose to write new data to a RAW file, as RAW files are proprietary and will never be produced by anything but a camera. It sounds doubly fishy that it will also write *undo data* to a RAW file. Again, I'm no expert at Photoshop, but I am an expert at software engineering, and it sounds pretty strange and error-prone.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3359633
Now, when I do that with Aperture, will Aperture then make a new copy of the RAW file to be kept in Aperture Library?
Aperture will not make a new copy of a master (RAW or not) unless you explicitly duplicate it (and that is not what you are asking about). Aperture, being a Digital Asset Manager, will never modify your masters. (Except if you change the date/time and choose to modify the master.) This is unlike photo editors like Photoshop, which may manipulate their input files and save those changes to the same files. Aperture makes a version, which is a recipe for changing the appearance of your master.

  • Sending a photo heavy PDF for book printing on a web press.  Convert photo in photoshop first or Acrobat 11?

    Hi,
The printing company for our photo book on Loons, uses roll fed web presses.  They have asked for a pdf set to X-1a.
First soft proof was light and washed out.  Printer had us increase saturation and contrast.  Second proof
all our blue water photos come out more purple then blue.
We currently  used srgb jpeg photos embedded in a ms word document.  We used acrobat 11 to create the pdf using the request X-1a
    setting.
Should we have converted the photos in photoshop to the requested setting first and then embedded them in word?
    Thanks for any help.

Can you show us screen shots of your X-1 PDF Settings ( i.e., Color )?  The reason why I ask is my default Distiller PDF-X1a:2001 Settings use a working space of RGB = sRGB IEC61966-2.1; and CMYK = US Web Coated (SWOP) v2 with the "Color Management Policies: "Convert All Colors to CMYK" ( default ); Rendering Intent ( default is "Preserve" ).  Have you discussed these settings with the print service provider?  These settings, if they are identical in Acrobat 11, would appear to have the same RGB work space as your original sRGB based pics. I sense that Word, although not a color managed application, would work as an image carrier into Acrobat 11 where the image files may retain their profiles going into Acrobat 11 and remain intact going out of Acrobat 11 via a PDF-X1a.  In which case, the print service provider then RIP and Prints the file for a hardcopy proof. In your case, the previous digital printer did a good job reproducing the photos as you supplied them, Word or no Word.  The question now becomes what changed with this new service provider?  Their prepress people must of accepted your documents and pushed them through their workflow.  So, what changed? I know of no way to "swap" images using Acrobat.  In your case, it may be a matter of saving a second set of files or the entire book document as a copy and replacing the pics in that file, then create a second PDF-X1a file.  And, as a third option, use InDesign ( however, no point in using it until you've determined where the problem with quality lies ).  If I assume the printer told you that the sRGB files were sufficient and, if you used the X-1 PDF Settings when Saving As > PDF, that would be their preferred workflow and the image files rendered dull and unsaturated ( as they did in your case ), and the printer recommended you increase the saturation and HUE of the images ( which he did ) and the entire workflow worked for a digital printer in the past ( which it did ), then something changed with this new print service provider.  You have to find out from them what it could be.  It could be something with their direct-to-plate equipment.  I believe it merits further research and development with the new service provider.  There is a solution.  You just have to find it.
"Once the pdf is created could I swap out the photos
for ones that had been converted from RGB to CMYK in photoshop with  Rendering Intent and Black Point Compensation etc. filled. "...
Wait a minute.  You did a RGB-to-CMYK conversion in Photoshop?  Why?  I thought you embedded the RGB files in Word?  Then, Acrobat did the conversion using the X-1 settings mentioned above.
"How hard would it be to dump my word document into InDesign with  the newly created RGB or CMYK photos would it work better?  Is the learning curve too much of a hassle for one off?"...
Yes it would.  But, your procedures worked for the digital printer.  Why not now with the new printer?  That's my question.  Since Acrobat's X-1 settings have a work space of sRGB ( assumed ), then your sRGB files should render appropriately and they do not.  You have to find out what works for this new print service provider and, whatever Photoshop Color Setting RGB workspace you use, use it in Acrobat 11.  Discuss the entire document and Photoshop setups with the new print service provider.

  • Problem syncing photos with Photoshop Elements 5.0

I have a problem with syncing my photos using Photoshop Elements 5.0 to my AppleTV.
After marking I want to use elements it shows my catalogs.
But after syncing no photos are transferred to my AppleTV.
I do get a circle with an explanation mark behind my AppleTV in iTunes, but it doesn't give any further information.
The problem exists both when trying to sync all photos or selected catalogs from Elements.
When I sync from folders or my pictures the pictures arrive without problem on my ATV
Since I don't want all of my photos to be sent to my AppleTV, I would really like to use my Photoshop Elements.
    Anybody any suggestions?
    Thnx,
    Egbert

    Hello,
I'm seeing exactly the same described bahavior using iTune 7.4.3 and PhotoShop Elements 5.0. I tried at least 4 versions of ITunes with all the same behavior. It's fine to sync from MyPictures but not from PhotoShop Elements Collections and these are exactly the same pictures that both are pointing to so no format issues. Same behavior from iTunes, a warning sign appears next to the AppleTV but when I click on it it does not show any text to describe the issue ?
I doubt that the iTunes + Phitoshow elements 5.0 couple works at all ?
Can anybody help with this ? Maybe Apple ?
    Regards
    Eric

  • Importing into iPhoto, edited RAW photos from Photoshop CS3

I edit all my photos in Photoshop CS3. Sometimes I just batch edit many of them. But when I import these edited images, iPhoto only shows them in unedited form. How do I import these edited images into iPhoto, and yet maintain the edits.
I am a professional photographer, and the only reason I need to import these images into iPhoto, is that I use the web galleries as the viewing tool for my clients.
    Thanks.

    coxpix:
When iPhoto imports a RAW file it creates a jpg version of it for display and editing with by iPhoto. Therefore, when you edit a RAW with CS3 you must import the new edited version, of whatever format you chose to save as, and use that one. It's the nature of the beast. All edits to RAW files when saved must be saved as a new file.
For what it's worth, the following may be of some help in using CS3 with iPhoto:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory .
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Grainy, pixelated photos in Photoshop and ACR

All my photos in Photoshop and ACR look very grainy and pixelated on my new Macbook Pro? How do I fix this? I have already updated everything and installed the plugin for my raw files. Any help is appreciated!
    Using Photoshop CS5

Check Preferences > Performance > Cache levels.  It needs to be set to a value higher than one.
If that does not help, can you tell us what camera these RAW files come from.  If a Nikon, have they been processed in the Nikon bundled software?

  • How do I fix a photo in photoshop that I had to re size and now it is distorted?

I had to re size a photo in photoshop cc for the lab.  It now is distorted and I don't know how to fix the problem.

An fyi for the future, when you change the size of a picture, make sure it is done on a copy, as the original is the only one that can get you back to the beginning when that time comes to start over. When you do alter the size, you can save as a psd format, to make it easier to undo, since the some tools like the crop tool can hide the unwanted portions of an image instead of deleting them. You can also make a copy of the layer as a new layer and hide one of the two layers, then you will have a starting point assuming you save the file in a format that support layers like psd or tiff.
Never save as a jpg for your own use, if possible. Use that format as a means to share to others as it does not support, layers, live type, transparency or objects. It is also a destructive format meaning each time you save, reopen, save again. The data is reduced by throwing out color information to a point where it is no longer a usable image if that process is repeated enough times.

  • Create HDR-Photo in Photoshop CS6

The process of creating HDR-photo in Photoshop is not started when I send Canon Camera Raw photos (.CR) (3 pieces) by means of Bridge-function "tools / photoshop / create HDR pro" to photoshop; photoshop itsself
open automatically - however, process is not started.

What do you do after making the changes?  Either opening the edited RAW file, or clicking on  Done will create the sidecar (XMP) files which contain all of the information about your adjustments.  The next time you open that RAW file, it will look for an XMP file with the same file name, and use the information contained in it.
If you delete the XMP files, it's back to square one!
You deleted them to save space?  A typical XMP file is probably less than 10kb, which is a tiny fraction of the size of the RAW file.  You need to rethink your strategy.

  • How do I process Infrared photos in Elements?

I have been using Elements 11 to enhance my photos. Recently I purchased a camera modified for 720nm IR from Kolari Vision. I'd like to process IR photos in Elements or an add on program. Kolari has a Infrared False Color program compatable with Photoshop CS but I am unable to open it in Elements. I emailed Kolari and their reply said the program was compatible with Elements but could not tell me how to apply it. Can anyone tellme how? As an alternative is there an add on software I can purchase?

  • Best way to Process 6000 photos?

Just returned from 2 weeks in Africa where I now have 6000 RAW photos to process.
While there I downloaded all my pics to a 320 G hard drive. I now want to move those pics from that portable HD onto my Mac Intel Duo iMac v. 10.4.11 & process using LR & then Photoshop CS2.
I began to Import them from the HD in LR, but about 1/5 of the way through I ran out of disk space. I also could no longer even Open LR because I did not have enough space. I deleted the pictures I imported from my Users/ Gil / Pictures folder and was able to open LR. ( I now have only 30 GB space available on my internal HD.) BUT now I am stumped as to how to proceed.
Although I deleted all the pics from the Pictures Folder, did I also remove them all from the LR database? I do not see a way, using Finder, to see what is in the Databases. Under my "Pictures" folder I have the following folders:
    LR Catalog
    LR Catalog Previews.lrdata
    LR Catalog.lrcat
    Download Backups
each individual date's import listed separately
    iPhoto library
each individual folder of pics in there listed separately
    Then under BACKUPS I have:
    Lightroom Database. lrcat
    Lightroom Database Previews.lrcat
How do I see if these pics are in there & delete them?
Then once I clean up the old pics, what do I do to process my pics?
Do I have to move my LR catalogs to an External HD? How do I do that?
Any opinions on whether I am better off using Bridge than LR to process all these images? BUT I have a problem using Bridge. Altohugh I can open Bridge by itself, if I try to open it in PS, using Browse, I get the following Error Message:
    Error 2: photoshop is undefind
    -> photoshop.invokeBridge(false,false,");
    What's That all about?
And lastly, I was planning to upgrade to LR2 - should I do that before I start downloading these photos, or doesn't it matter?
    Thanks very much.

The first thing I would do is buy another hard disk (cheap nowadays) and back up all your images onto it. There is nothing worse than losing 6000 images from a priceless trip. Seriously, back it up before you do anything else!
Then what you do is create a new catalog (from the File menu) and make sure to locate it on your external harddisk). Now import the photos leaving them in place (add photos to catalog without moving). Now you'll have a catalog on your external harddisk that only contains your Africa images. You can switch between catalogs by holding the option key while you start Lightroom or by choosing open catalog from the file menu.

I am trying to save my photo from photoshop back to lightroom and I keep getting an error that is "could not save because disk does not exist.  Anyone know how to fix this?

trying to download my photos on photoshop 12 and its telling me "catalog is currently locked by another process" it was ok the day before. how do I fix this problem

If it says it is temporarily being modified than you should wait until tomorrow or later tonight. If it keeps happening, try downloading something else. If it has the same message, it is probably a problem with iTunes on your iPod. If it downloads regularly, there must just be a problem with the album.

  • If I edit a photo in Photoshop Elements, I can't seem to re-import it back into Lightroom. If I open the relevant folder on my Mac the image is present, but Lightroom just doesn't "see" it at all.

For some reason, my (Mac) Lightroom 5 won't recognise images in folders on my Mac that I've edited in either Photoshop Elements or Perfect Effects 8. If I've previously imported images from a specific folder, Lightroom will show these as greyed-out images (as normal) but will not show other images I've subsequently saved in that folder. Similarly, if I, say, select three images from Lightroom to use the Photomerge option in Elements, the subsequent saved image won't be recognised by Lightroom.
I've tried moving locations, saving in umpteen different formats etc., but the problem persists. No problem importing existing images from either SD card or old folders on the computer.
    It's very frustrating!

Ah-Ha! Right, think I've worked out the problem!
When I save a photo from Photoshop, I often place it on the desktop with a view to e-mailing it or posting it somewhere on the internet. I've just looked at the file that was supposedly saved as a .psd, but under "properties" it has no file extension. So I added the .psd and bingo, up it popped in the LR import window! I've since gone into Photoshop preferences & ticked it to add a file extension. That's really odd - I've never deselected that option but, hey ho, mystery solved.
Many thanks for your patience Mr Paige, I should have looked at this before. Put it down to advancing senility...

I have Photoshop Elements 12 for both PC and Mac (I use both). I have a new camera, Nikon D810. I downloaded the latest version of Camera Raw, 8.8. My D810 is listed as a supported camera model. However, when I try to open a raw photo in Photoshop Elements, I keep getting the message "Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. I have tried reinstalling Camera Raw many times, and have tried to open many different raw files in Elements, and still get the same error message. Please help.

How did you try to install ACR 8.8.  The only way I know of that works with Elements is to use the Updates Choice on the Help menu.
There are two charts supplied by Adobe that explain your RAW dilemma.  This one tells you what your camera needs:  http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html   This one tells you what version of software you need:  http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
In your case, the Nikon D810 needs Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 8.6 or Lightroom 5.6.  (Congratulations on buying a new camera!)
To get to that level with Photoshop Elements, you will need to replace your Photoshop Elements 12 with version 13.   Adobe caps ACR updates on version 12 at 8.5.
The most convenient way to get around it without spending any money is to use the FREE from Adobe DNG Converter.  Download and install it from here for FREE:  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5855&fileID=5890  Once it is installed you can convert your D810 raw files to an Adobe RAW version with the .DNG file extension that most, if not all, versions of the various Adobe software programs can use.  That includes old versions of Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom.  DNG converter can be used as the tool to move your files from your memory card to your computer, is efficient, will convert in batches and is completely lossless.  There is no risk of any image quality degradation or RAW functionality.
