Is it possible on a fusion drive to have Maverick and Windows at the same time? Is it going to work the same way on windows ( I mean as fast as in osx)

Macbook Pro - 2 Hard Drives - Dual Boot OS OSX + Windows

Hello guys, I've been facing an issue here
I bought an SSD 2 years ago and changed the original MBP HD. I did a fresh install of OSX while still having my optical drive. Everything is fine with the OSX installation.
Recently I bought an enclosure and installed the original MBP HD drive into the optical drive slot. Now i have two HD's on my MBP (Early 2011 - Unibody Model)
The configuration for the Hard Drives is as follows:
SSD Drive - disk 0 - OS X Running fine
HD Drive - disk 1 - clean formatted to accommodate Windows 7 installation
I started the BootCamp Utility formated the second hard drive to install windows from bootable USB. Everything works fine until the point where the Windows installation actually expands the files. I always get the same error, that windows cannot be installed on that drive and any changes will be reverted back to original settings.
Several hours after researching the whole thing this is what I've got:
The error that I am getting is for the configuration of the drives, a fix to this problem is to take out my SSD, install the old HD in its original position, install windows normally, put my SSD back in its position and put the old HD in the optical drive and thus I will have the Dual Boot of two OS in two different HD's. That's really really awful as I have to take appart again the whole thing and swap between the drives till the process is finished. This is because The EFI boot + Windows to be installed require the disk that windows to be installed to be on main slot - disk 0.
My question here is, is there any fix to the BootCamp assistant to let me install windows on the hard drive that it is located on the disk 1 position?
Moreover is there any way to install windows through the environment of OSX with the use of a VM, but, the windows to be a bootable OS rather than a VM bootable image? (on disk 1 - optical drive SATA port). - What I mean by that is, while running OS X normally on disk 0 run a VM software that will mimic the environment of a bootloader so that I can install windows on disk 1, but after I shut down my computer, windows should be accessible on disk 1 as a normal installed OS.

You can install Parallels or Fusion, either will work. When you setup either Parallels or fusion you can tell it to use your already installed Boot Camp installation of Windows as its target guest operating system.
You would then just boot into OSx, start your VM (Parallels or Fusion), then you'll have access to both OSx and Windows without having to reboot.
I have this setup and two monitors. I have my Windows running on my external monitor and OSx running on my Macbook Pro monitor at the same time.
Beware that you will need to re-register Windows to get a second key. This is free and easily done either online or by calling the Microsoft registration number. The reason for needing a second key is that Windows, although only installed once in your Boot Camp partition sees the virtual hardware created by your virtual machine and thinks it has been reinstalled on a new computer.

New to Mac... I have partitioned my hard drive Dual Boot M.Lion/S. Leopard with 2 OS partitions and a Media Partition. How do I direct my file storage to the Media Partition? Can I put a "Media" folder on both OS Desktops that will allow me to drag n drop

Why not? Make a folder in your media partition and put an alias folder (shortcut) on the desktop of each partition/ OS. You can right click on the folder in the media partition and click on "make alias".
If you want to direct your iTunes media to point to the media partition, google "move iTunes library to external disk" and follow the steps; the instructions should be the same for a seperate partition as it is for an external drive.

IdeaPad Y570 - hybrid drive dual-boot ? ( Win 7 + Debian )

Hello, I've tried to find specific information but none was found so I've made this topic.
My question is.
Is it possible to dualboot on Y570 with hybrid drive (SSD 32GB + 750GB HDD)?
I've have my Windows 7 already installed and used. I have 2 partitions - C (the biggest 690GB - Win installed + data) and D (from lenovo - drivers, utilities...)
I haven't change any setting with partitions.
I would love to split the biggest drive C into 2 smallers - one with Win 7 another with Debian installed.
I prefer NOT to install Win 7 again. I just want to create new partition, install Debian on it and have dual-boot system. I don't need One Key recovery system.
Another question is, how will the SSD work with Debian? If not, I can live through that, but I would prefer if it works at least for Win 7, just like now.
I've read that Optimus is not working under Linux. Okay, no problem, but can the external graphic card be disabled at least in Linux?
To sum up, my goal is to have Linux without formating drive / without reinstalling Win 7. Is it even possible?

Time Machine with 3 hard drives + Dual boot Leopard vs Tiger questions

My situation began with two 160GB HDDs that I have been using under Tiger. One is the boot drive and the other is a data drive. I bought Leopard and also installed a new 320GB HDD but as yet I have not done the OS upgrade or even formatted the HDD. I need to gain some understanding before I proceed. My first choice is just to clone Tiger onto the new (bigger) HDD and then upgrade it to Leopard. (Note that this post is not meant to be a discussion of the best way to get the OS upgrade completed.) After that I could wipe the two 160 giggers to serve as backup space for the 320, but can anyone tell me: Is Time Machine compatible with using multiple HDDs for backup data? It may not be as relevant if the first answer is positive, but I also would like to know: Does Time Machine requires use some kind of special hidden partition for storage (or is just any empty space on an HFS drive sufficient)? If any HFS space will work, will Time Machine preserve the other files that are already there? And lastly, if I reboot into Tiger, mount the drive that has the Time Machine archive on it, and write/delete/edit the non-Time-Machine data there, will Time Machine freak out the next time I use it in Leopard?

Yes this will work AOK. Have done this myself so can confirm.

No special 'hideden' partition required. It simply creates a specially named folder to keep/manage its data backups.

Windows will not boot to my boot camp partition on a DIY fusion drive - gives "No bootable device found" error

I have a MacBookPro 9,1 (mid-2012, non-retina) running OS X 10.8.2. Here is what I have done to my system:
Installed Windows 7 x64 Pro to a boot camp partition; installed all windows updates.
Using WinClone, save an image of this boot camp partition.
Removed optical drive and HDD.
Installed HDD in place of optical drive.
Installed SSD in place of HDD.
Booted to recovery partition, installed OS X on a flash drive.
Booted to flash drive, created fusion drive using [MacWorld's instructions](http://www.macworld.com/article/2014011/how-to-make-your-own-fusion-drive.html)
Booted to recovery partition on flash drive.
Restored system to fusion drive from a Time Machine backup. Unfortunately, it seems that because I never installed OS X on my fusion drive, I do not have a recovery partition. But that's an issue for another day.
Using Boot Camp assistant, created a boot camp partition on my HDD.
Using WinClone, restore my Windows installation from the previously created image.
Now, Windows boots to a black screen telling me that it can't find a bootable device. I have tried a few things to resolve this, all without effect:
I know that VMware Fusion has to prepare a boot camp partition in order to virtualize it, so I figured it might inadvertently fix things. Alas, while it *did* successfully boot my boot camp partition into a virtual machine, I still can't boot into Windows.
I figured I'd just try to reinstall Windows. Surprisingly, my system booted to my Windows install disc, which was in my original optical drive (which I had put in a USB case). But, Windows refused to install, giving me a an error 0x8030024. It seems the solution to this issue is to disconnect all drives but the one on which you want to install Windows, which is something I would dearly like to avoid. It would be a pain, but more than that, I'm afraid it would bork my fusion drive, even if I'm careful to never boot to OS X with the SSD disconnected.
A lot of places said that this error results from a borked MBR, and suggest using a tool like gptfdisk to rewrite it. I followed the instructions [here](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4144252?start=0&tstart=0), but *that* didn't work either.
I am now completely at a loss as to how to proceed, and Google isn't much help either.

My setup is very similar to your's, Ryan, on a Mac Mini5,2 and the ordering is different and Winclone was not used.
1. New Mini with internal 500GB with Mountain Lion(ML), put into an external FW enclosure, so the Mini can/could be booted using an external drive for contigency.
2. Replaced internal stock HDD (500Gb/5400rpm) with SSD/HDD (256Gb SSD/1TB 5400rpm).
3. Installed W7 x64 on 64GB partition on HDD, which was a single-partition drive to begin with.
4. The remaining HDD partition and the entire SSD was put into a Fusion drive.
5. Using Command-R, new ML installed on Fusion HD.

Can I partition a 3tb fusion drive on a 2014 imac27", with boot camp, to let me install windows 7?

I have used boot camp to create a partition for Windows 7 on 3 earlier Macs (iMac 24" 2007 / Mac Pro 2009 / Macbook Pro 2009) as well as a recent Macbook Air 2012.
My main reason for this is to use Sage Account/Payroll, and also a couple of other Windows-specific programs.
I have just replaced the old iMac with a new iMac27", with a 3tb fusion drive, and want to partition it to install a new oem copy of Win 7 sp1.
However, I found an article on this (link: http://twocanoes.com/winclone/support/installing-windows-on-a-boot-camp-partitio n-on-a-3-tb-fusion-drive) implying this might not currently be officially supported by Apple & boot camp assistant, and providing a workaround procedure to create 3 partitions. The article begins with this note: "Important Note: This help document is for reference only, superceded by updates to OS X that include support for 3TB drives and Fusion drive in Boot Camp Assistant. Use Boot Camp Assistant to create the Boot Camp partition."
I have two questions:
1 - Can anyone advise if updates have now been made, to provide this support for partitioning the 3tb fusion drive?....and if not, is this likely to change soon?
2 - If this is still not officially supported, can anyone advise if they have successfully created a Windows partition on the 3tb fusion drive & installed Win 7?

Based on Apple's knowledge base. this configuration is supported for Windows 7 x64 and 8 using Mountain Lion 108.3 or higher. Simply use BootCamp Assistant to set it up.

For your application, you might also consider virtualization software like VMWare Fusion or Parallels.
I use both BootCamp and VMWare Fusion. Fusion is much easier to install, more flxible, runs at the same time as your Mac applications etc. For typical applications, there is no notable performance degradation.
If you need high performance graphics for gaming, BootCamp is still the best way to go. For all other applications, I prefer VMWare.

Additional information from Linc's post. Basically, only one additional partition can be added to a Fusion Drive and it resides on the HDD.
Do computers that come with a Fusion Drive support Boot Camp?
Yes. Use the Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows partition and install Boot Camp. The Windows partition will exist on the hard disk drive, not the Flash drive, and is not part of Fusion Drive Logical Volume Group. 3TB Fusion Drive configurations need to update to OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.3 or later to install Windows 8. Installing Windows 7 on Late 2013 iMac w/ Fusion Drive

Sorry in advance for the long post, but I have tried to exhaust all possibilities, and bring as much knowledge about our environment to the table to avoid confusion.
Here's our goal: Install Mac & Windows on a Late 2013 iMac with a 1TB Fusion Drive
Install our Mac Image with Deepfreeze on Partition 1
Install our Windows 7 x64 Image with DeepFreeze on Partition 2
Here's why our goal cannot work out of the box:
Deepfreeze for Mac, is not supported on a Fusion Drive. Now before anyone says "just don't use deepfreeze"...we are using it, and that is that.
In order to get our existing image to work on the iMac, we had to split the Fusion Drive.
Splitting Up the Fusion Drive
We booted into Recovery, Opened up terminal, retrieved the LvGUID, deleted it, and split up the SSD from the HD.
So now, we have a 128GB SSD, and 1TB HD showing up under Diskutilitiy.
We then partitioned the 1TB HD, into two, 500GB Partitions. One for Mac OSX 10.9.4, and the other for Windows.
The 128GB SSD is going to be used for scratch space, temp, etc. And is irrelevant at this time.
Deploying our Mac Image
After splitting the Fusion Drive, we netbooted and installed a "NetRestore" of our image. Worked completely fine, no issues. DeepFreeze Works fine, the 128GB SSD shows up just fine, and the other 500GB Windows Partition shows up fine. All drives / partitions can be written to with no problem.
Deploying our Windows Image
Deployed our Windows Partition image as we have done in the past, by booting into a windows PE Disk. (We have other various 2009, 2010, and 2011 iMacs across campus, with NO FUSION DRIVES installed, and dual boot them successfully using the same procedure. Minus the splitting of the fusion drive part of course) After the Windows image is deployed to the windows partition, we then boot it up to a Windows 7 Install disk to fix the MBR, Bootrec, and BCD options to allow it to boot properly. Here's where we run into issues: Upon getting the Windows 7 Install screen, the USB Keyboard and Mouse, DO NOT WORK.
Here's the options we've tried to get them to work properly
1. Tried another known working Mac USB Keyboard & Mouse = Failed
2. Tried a known working Windows Keyboard & Mouse = Failed
3. Plugged Just a known working Mac Keyboard into each USB Port to see if recognized = Failed
4. Plugged Just a known working Windows Keyboard into each USB Port to see if recognized = Failed
5. Plugged Just a known working Mac Mouse into each USB Port to see if recognized = Failed
6. Plugged Just a known working Windows Mouse into each USB Port to see if recognized = Failed
7. A Windows 8.1 Recovery USB will boot and the USB Mouse & Keyboard are recognized and installed! (YAY!!) However, we cannot repair a Windows 7 install with Windows 8.1..
BootCamp Drivers & Support Media
Downloaded the Current BootCamp Support drivers to enable the USB and other various drivers to be loaded during setup (Placed the $WinPEDriver$ and AutoUnattend.xml, and BootCamp folder on the Root of a USB, and modified a Windows7 Installation disk and placed on the root as well) The drivers do not load. Have also placed on a brand new USB2, and USB3 flash drive formatted at FAT32, to see if that made a difference, which it did not. The BootCamp USB made within Mac, it loads saying "Now booting into Boot Camp Assistant Created USB Drive..." or something like that (Don't remember the exact Message)
Side Note:
Restored Fusion Drive to its original State, and booted from the BootCamp USB drive, still no usb Mouse & Keyboard Support.

Tried everything differend hdd,ssd as well
Basically when trying instal win 7 via iOS maverick when reboting and windows booting to the first scree everything freezing cant do much.
Also tried install clear ssd without any system, but soon after format ssd or hdd I have error that I cant use this disk to install windows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is funny Windows 8 installing without any problem!!!

This issue I have only on Late 2013 on my other Late 2012 this issue not exist and everything working as should.

[Solved] Windows 7 and Arch Dual boot- unable to boot into Windows7

Had to reformat computer and reinstall windows and Arch on two separate hard drives (Dual boot) .
Windows 7 was the first install on SDA: (/dev/sda1 - system reserved 100mb, /dev/sda2 - 20gb)
Arch on SDB: (/dev/sdb1- boot 94mb, /dev/sdb2- swap, /dev/sdb3 - root, /dev/sdb4 - /home)
Installed grub2 on /dev/sda. now grub bootloader loads Arch fine. Also shows Windows 7 (on /dev/sda1).
But when chosen Windows 7, it does not load and loops back again to boot loader screen.
In BIOS i have set disk drive SDB as first boot option.
If i choose SDA as first boot option in BIOS, same scenario is repeated.
I have gone through mostly all the pages related to the topic but i can not co-relate the solution
to my exact situation due to limited knowledge.
Can somebody pls help me as to how to edit grub.cfg so as to point it to load windows 7?
the entry related to windows 7 reads as follows:-

MacMini Fusion Drive Trouble:

Hi,
I just bought a new MacMini and have trouble with the built-in hard drive which is a fusion drive.
Obviously I can´t access most of the storage space. In the hard disk utility, total capacity is given with 1.12 TB, while 30.9 GB are in usage and 3.7 GB are free disk space (try to add that up to 1.12 TB?). Accordingly, my apple doesn´t let me install anything beyond 3 GB or so. I have tried both of the repair options in the hard disk utility, with no appreciable result. I have also tried to add a partition, which didn´t work, because there was not enough disk space to add the 999 GB partition that the utility suggested...
OS was updated when I set up the Mini and there are no more recent updates available.
I am new to the Mac world and have limited knowledge to "try around", so I would appreciate help.

I have a different problem with my mini with fusion drive
After booting and transferring a user to the drive i wanted to startup again but i got after the chime a screen with a round circle with an bar tru it
Resetting the pram did not change
After option key i could choose from a list of drives but after choosing one external or internal the circle with the bar appeared
On another mac i create a mountain lion usb stick but with same result
The mac arrived two days ago so it is brandnew
What can i do?

How do I set up a dual boot with 10.8 and 10.7

I want to set u a dual boot system using so10.8 and os 10.7 I have my disk for 10.7 and 10.8 is curently my os. I have an empety hard drive partition I want to install 10.7 on to but when I try to start up my computer with the instalation disk it gives me the "this computer needs to restart please push and hold your power button" message. Can any one help?

How to create an OS X Lion installation disc
OS X Lion Install to Different Drive
Your system (OS) selection of where has to be done BEFORE any restart.
And you want to backup and retain a copy of the installer ".ESD" package first.
On restart it will self destruct the package.
A clean install on another drive or another partition.
I prefer to go with pulling the old drive.
Always retain backup boot ability and dual drive dual boot is just... safer.
If you're looking for an OSX installation disc, and, like me, you upgraded to Lion through the app store, you will have to go through a back-door process in order to create this disc. I made a disc like this because I thought I needed it to reload from a Time Machine backup, but it turns out that Lion doesn't require the disc for this, so I never used it.)
When I installed Boot Camp and Windows, I didn't need the OSX installation disc. I'm not sure why you would, in this process. It should only ask for your Windows disc.
If for some reason you downloaded Windows from Microsoft instead of buying a package with a disc, you need to download the ISO version and burn it to a DVD. Can Bootcamp run on the new fusion drives?

I'm interested in hearing from people who had a success with installing Bootcamp on the new fusion drives. I read a lot of the challenges in the beginning. i'm considering af new iMac with 1tb fusion and wont buy if I cant run the Windows Bootcamp for games.

The Windows partition will exist on the hard disk drive, not the Flash drive, and is not part of Fusion Drive Logical Volume Group. 3TB Fusion Drive configurations need to update to OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.3 or later to install Windows 8. Slow boot up on 2012 Mac mini with DIY fusion drive

Hello everyone, I bought a Mac mini (2012) 2 months ago with a stock 500GB HDD.
I added another SSD to make a DIY fusion drive, and everything is working fine, except that I'm experiencing a very slow boot up.
I have confirmed both by information from the OS and some tests with command line tools, that the fusion drive itself is a success and absolutely working fine.
The slow boot up happens on cold boot only (a reboot does not have such problem).
Symptom: the Mac mini is stuck on the gray blank screen for about 40 seconds, and then finally shows up the apple logo.
Everything after this is pretty fast and fine.
I have tried the following methods and none of them seems to help:
1. Go Preferences -> Startup Disk, select the Machintosh HD. (Suggested by Apple in the Fusion Drive FAQ)
2. Verify the whole disk along with the partition with Disk Utility.
3. Reset NVRAM by holding Command+Option+P+R during boot up.
4. Reset SCM/PMU.
Does anyone have an idea on the cause of my problem?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Fusion drive ssd gone missing after boot

Hi all,
I have a DIY fusion drive on my iMac which was working fine since I installed it over a year ago. This morning I booted my Mac and it got stuck while loading the Finder. Another reboot did not help so I booted the recovery partition and ran "diskutil list" and "diskutil cs list". The output looks fine: two physical disks forming a logical disk. But several minutes after booting the same commands don't show the ssd physical disk anymore and the logical disk goes offline.
Does anyone know what the problem with my ssd could be? After reboot the ssd is always detected and it always disappears after several minutes.
All suggestions are very welcome!

Sounds like the SSD has failed.
