Fusion Drive - How to resize partition?

Hello there.
I've been searching google for many hours on how to resize (make it bigger) fusion drive bootcamp partition, without doing it manually (deleting/creating new)
Since i have MANY games and such, I dont want to reinstall / redownload them again.
I can't use Camptune, it doesn't support fusion drive.
Is there a program out there supporting resizing for fusion drive?

Can you make a clone / restore system image?
You may have to nuke your partitions but Restore Mac OS partition and Windows would avoid reinstallng.

I know it is a little bit late to reply. But, I still want to share my experiences with everyone here.
Actually, I have ever also ahs the same issue and need to resize my C drive partition for installing a large game. But, the resizing process just unexpectedly fails at last in Disk Management. The “extend” function is unable to work.
So, I have no choice but to take chances with some third party partition resizer recommended in many forums such as:
    GParted
    http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
    IM-Magic Partition Resizer Free
    http://www.resize-c.com/
    Active Partition Manager
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Active-Partition-Manager.shtml
All of them seem efficient. So, I just have tried them one by one and finally added wanted free space to my C drive successfully with the second free resizer. I even have found a video tutorial that teaches me how to resize my drive with
    this freeware in details:

  • Fusion Drive: How do I manage which software is on the Flash portion?

Any idea how I can see which software Mountain Lion is placing on the Solid State portion of my Fusion drive? Can I manaually manage it, as they suggested?
From the link below, it is suggested that once I add a partition to my Fusion drive, the "plus" symbol in Disk Utility to add additional partitions will be grayed out. You cannot partition the Flash storage. When I go to my (Apple configured) drive in Disk Utility, there is NO plus sign next to my drive. I haven't attempted any partitions. Is it possible that my drive was not formatted properly from the factory?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5446?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

You don't have any direct control over the allocation of data between the physical drives. It's automatic, based on your usage pattern. If you're not satisfied with that, Fusion Drive isn't right for you.

  • How to resize Partitions on Leopard 10.5.7?

    Am running Leopard 10.5.7 on a MacBook with a 120GB HDD partitioned as follows;
    C - 80GB
    D - 40GB
I have run out of space on my D partition. However, I do have about 30GB left in my C partition. Can I use Disk Utility to free up about 20GB from the C partition and allocate that space to the D partition? If possible, how do I do that?
    Thank you...

No, you can't do what you want without moving some files around. You can make the C partition smaller by dragging the lower right corner upwards to make the partition smaller, but then you can't drag the beginning of the D partition up to be able to use the space you've vacated.
You will need to move the files from the D partition, then delete it and create a new D partition that can use all of the space not allocated to the C partition.
Creating a new partition will wipe all of the data from the D partition.
The second part of your problem is that you will be lowering the free space to 10GB spare out of 60GB in the partition. That's pretty much all of the data you're going to want to have because you need at least 15% spare space on a drive for it to be able to do it's work. Cut the space too low and you will slow down your machine, and increase your potential for directory damage.

  • How to resize partition on Portege M400?

I've tried Paragon Partition manager (bootCD).
But, when I loaded from CD, Partition manager does not see hard drive of my Portege M400
Is there special drivers or software for doing this task?

Do you use the Vista or XP OS??
If you use Vista OS you can change the partition size n the disk management
Just simply shrink the existing partition and then create a new one on the free space or simply add the free space to another partition.
If you use the XP I would recommend using the tool called Partitions Magic 8.

Its a wonder full tool which supports many useful functions!!!

  • Can I partition a 3tb fusion drive on a 2014 imac27", with boot camp, to let me install windows 7?

I have used boot camp to create a partition for Windows 7 on 3 earlier Macs (iMac 24" 2007 / Mac Pro 2009 / Macbook Pro 2009) as well as a recent Macbook Air 2012.
My main reason for this is to use Sage Account/Payroll, and also a couple of other Windows-specific programs.
I have just replaced the old iMac with a new iMac27", with a 3tb fusion drive, and want to partition it to install a new oem copy of Win 7 sp1.
However, I found an article on this (link: http://twocanoes.com/winclone/support/installing-windows-on-a-boot-camp-partitio n-on-a-3-tb-fusion-drive) implying this might not currently be officially supported by Apple & boot camp assistant, and providing a workaround procedure to create 3 partitions. The article begins with this note: "Important Note: This help document is for reference only, superceded by updates to OS X that include support for 3TB drives and Fusion drive in Boot Camp Assistant.  Use Boot Camp Assistant to create the Boot Camp partition."
    I have two questions:
1 - Can anyone advise if updates have now been made, to provide this support for partitioning the 3tb fusion drive?....and if not, is this likely to change soon?
2 - If this is still not officially supported, can anyone advise if they have successfully created a Windows partition on the 3tb fusion drive & installed Win 7?
    Thanks in advance.

Based on Apple's knowledge base. this configuration is supported for Windows 7 x64 and 8 using Mountain Lion 108.3 or higher. Simply use BootCamp Assistant to set it up.

For your application, you might also consider virtualization software like VMWare Fusion or Parallels.
I use both BootCamp and VMWare Fusion. Fusion is much easier to install, more flxible, runs at the same time as your Mac applications etc. For typical applications, there is no notable performance degradation.
If you need high performance graphics for gaming, BootCamp is still the best way to go. For all other applications, I prefer VMWare.

  • Cannot erase/partition Fusion drive

    Hi everyone,
When I got my iMac, with a 1TB Fusion drive, I partitioned it, with a small partition running OS X and apps, and another larger one, to contain my user files - photos, documents and so on.
Now I want to sell my iMac, and I want to re-partition my Fusion drive, to only one partition, like when I bought it. But it cannot be done. Se screenshot bellow. Everything is greyed out.
I have tried to boot into reinstall mode, via CMD-R, with no luck.
I have tried running OS X from another USB drive, no luck.
And the one partition listed in the screenshot, won't mount. Have I messed up completely?
    Best regards
    Soeren Vedel

Boot into your Recovery HD using Internet Recovery (Command+Option+R). You should see a spinning globe and it should take a few minutes to get to the OS X Utilities menu. This boots into Apple's server.
Open Terminal and type: diskutil cs list
Copy the Logical Volume Group UUID which is a string of letters/numbers/dashes. This should be the 1st line after the above command.
Type: diskutil cs delete <LVG UUID from the previous step> (without the brackets)
After the delete completes open Disk Utility and you may see your two drive (SSD, HDD) in RED. You will be prompted to IGNORE or FIX. Choose FIX to recreate your Fusion Drive.
Close DU and select Reinstall OS X from the menu list. After the reinstall completes Shutdown. Your Mac is now setup to factory OS.

  • Fusion drive + Bootcamp on mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15"

    Dear all,
I am in a sort of delimma now, as I am trying to set up a Fusion Drive with a Bootcamp partition on my 2012 MacBook Pro 15" with a Hitachi 750G HDD and a Crucial Micron M4 256G SSD. Here are the challenges I read up from other threads or personally encountered:
    1) The Bootcamp partition would only boot when the drive is in the disk0 partition, meaninig I it will boot when the HDD is in the original HDD slot or when it's in the Optibay with the SSD disconnected. It, however, won't boot when it is in the Optibay with the SSD in the original HDD slot connected.
    2) The SATA connector in the Optibay is rated for 6G data rate, but there has been reports of spotty performances when it tries to negotaite the 6G data rate of SATA-III devices.
So as of now I am at a delimma of either to put the SSD in the HDD slot and forefeit the dual-boot setup, or to put the SSD in optibay and put up with the occasional beachball. Has anyone been able work out something aronud this problem?
p.s. I read somewhere that the poor performance of SSD in Optibay had to do with inteference in the cable, so I had the birlliant idea of shielding the optibay enclosure and the cable with aluminum foil - so far it does not seem to have an effect.

For the record, I finally got close to solving it after endless trials and errors.
With a setup of SSD in hard drive bay and HDD in optibay, I made a portition for Windows in the SSD, and then used the methods available online to merge the other partition on the SSD and the HDD into one fusion drive. The windows installation works, and the bootcamp was able to boot properly. Now I am posting this follow-up on the cloned system living on an external drive which was created using Carbon Copy Cloner and cloning the system back at the some time, all the while crossing my fingers that it will finally work this time.
Updates should be coming pretty soon.

hi all, i just upgraded my old imac and now im going to have the 27 inch 3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7,with 1TB Fusion Drive
how will logic is going to work? is it much better than my old i3 21.5 imac? i didnt like to work with my old imac, was very laggy.
    thanks
    Arad.

Anything purchased after mid-July has EFI (like BIOS in PCs) that only likes Lion.   Maybe some up through mid-August could possibly run SL, but anyhing sold last week is Lion-only.
A very lucky few accidentally receive a SL-system when they buy new, but very few.

  • Planning to get New 27" Does Boot camp work with the 1T and 3T Fusions Drives

I am planning to get a NEW 27" IMAC [if they ever come out] and use Parallels Desktop® 8 or Bootcamp for Gamming.
    Going with:
    27" 3.4GHz quad-core Intel core I7 with 8MB L3 cache
    8GB Ram - Upgrade to 32GB 1600MHz DDR3 from Crucial or OWC
    3TB 7200rpm Fusion Drive
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX Graphic processor with 2GB of GDDR5 memory
    AppleCare Protection Plan
    Samsung SE-506AB Slim Portable Blu-ray Writer =+$89.
I work with Photoshop, some Video and Play World of Warcraft.
Planning to do Gaming on the PC Side with using Bootcamp or Parallels Desktop® 8.
As you see I was planning to get the 3TB 7200rpm Fusion Drive.
But I don't know if it would work with Bootcamp.
Not sure if a separate Volume need to be made for the PC side?
If a 768 SSD would work?
Or do I have to go with Regular hard drive?

    Hello,
Kind of funny, the 3 TB isn;tsupported for BootCamp!?
    Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to configure Fusion Drive?
When ordered with a Fusion Drive, your iMac or Mac mini is pre-configured.
Can external USB, FireWire, or Thunderbolt hard drives be added to Fusion Drive?
An external drive cannot be used as part of a Fusion Drive volume. Fusion Drive is designed to work with an internal hard disk drive and internal flash storage.
Can I add a partition to the hard disk with Fusion Drive?
Using Disk Utility, you can add one partition to the hard disk on Fusion Drive. Once you add the partition, the "plus" symbol in Disk Utility to add additional partitions will be grayed out. You cannot partition the Flash storage.
If I create a hard disk partition is it part of Fusion Drive?
The additional partition is not part of Fusion Drive. The new partition is a separate volume that is physically located on the hard disk drive.
Can I add a Windows partition?
You can create one additional partition on the hard disk with Fusion Drive. You can create either a Mac OS X partition or a Windows partition.
If creating a Windows partition, use Boot Camp Assistant to create it, not Disk Utility. From the Go menu, choose Utilities. Then, double-click Boot Camp Assistant and follow the onscreen instructions. For more information on Boot Camp see the Boot Camp support page.
Note: Boot Camp Assistant is not supported at this time on 3TB hard drive configurations.

  • How to reset 3TB fusion drive to original partition scheme

When I first purchased my 27" iMac in early 2013 I was unable to use Boot Camp to create a Windows partition (with the version of OSX it shipped with bootcamp was initially disabled but added in an update later).  I found a guide online for untangling the Fusion Drive partitions and essentially setting up bootcamp manually.
However, a few days ago I had Windows 8 get screwed up and needed to reformat.  I figured that since Apple now updated Mavericks to allow my machine to use bootcamp I would start from scratch and do it properly.  The problem is, I cannot seem to get my machine back into a "factory default" setup.  I tried removing the CoreStorage volume and letting the Disk Utility tool "reset" the drive, and that -seemed- to work.  I had one 3TB partition (according to the GUI) and re-installed OSX.  I used Bootcamp to split 2TB for Windows (games) and leave 1TB for Mac.  Everything went fine and I restarted into the Win8 installer.  However, at this point Windows refused to install to the 2TB partition.  I tried formatting it, and delete/create but it said it couldn't install to that partition.  The confusing part is that according to Windows I had about 8 partitions (EFI and Recovery I understand but the rest I don't know the reason for).
So now I'm back at the OSX Recovery and this is what "diskutil list" is giving me.  Why are there all these 524.3 KB partitions?  I can't seem to remove or merge them.  I know I should have recorded what the original structure is, but it's too late now.  Can someone tell me what the 3TB Fusion Drive *should* look like, and how I can get back to that?

  • How can I resize partition? - New larger hard drive installed

    Hello,
The hard drive on my MacBook Pro recently died on me (just past my Apple Care warranty - lucky me).  I sent it to an authorised reseller/repair place and they installed a new hard drive for me - replacing my old 250GB with a nice new 500GB.  The problem is when they copied over the disk image from my previous hard drive they did not scale up the image (yeah, not so happy bout that).  Now I find myself with a 500GB hard drive with a 250GB partition called Macintosh HD and 250GB of unused/unusable space.  On top of that I'm just starting to get messages saying boot disk nearly full.  How can I resize the "Macintosh HD" partition to use the entire disk?  I've tried using disk utility, clicking on the main drive, going to the partition tab and dragging the Macintosh HD partition to use the entire disk but after a few seconds of a message saying "waiting for disk to reappear" it returns to the same 250GB size.  Running OSX 10.9.3.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks all!

See the tips in pounding's section on using Disk Utility:http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html and you could also take the route of buying an external hard drive (a great idea of maintaining a backup), format that drive for Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), clone the startup disk to that drive, then boot from the external, erase and format the internal, then clone the external back to the internal partitioned as you want.

  • How to restore partition layout of my 1TB Fusion Drive?

    Hi there,
I purchased a Late 2013 iMac 27" with a 1 TB Fusion Drive. I tried to install Windows 8.1 without Bootcamp. My Installation with Bootcamp didn't work - there was an error stating that Windows Installation was not able to prepare for the next step of the installation - so I partitioned manually via OS X Disk Utility (resizing the Macintosh HD) and tried to install to the unused disk space - okay my mistake. This somehow didn't work either. Now I have the following situation: The Disk Utility shows the following partition layout:
    Macintosh HD 779,53 GB
    Unused disk space 220,33 GB
I am not able to resize the Macintosh HD to use the unused disk space (original partition layout). There is no option for this. The partition layout option is greyed out. When I try to create a second partition of the unused space and proceed, nothing happens (protocol states preparing to partition: „APPLE HDD ST1000DM003 Media“ - nothing more). The operation will not finish. Next to the partition scheme is the following information (translated from german): "For a new partition layout the whole capacity of the Fusion Drive won't be available." The whole Macintosh HD now has a capacity of 900,52GB (Disk Utility).
What can I do to restore to the original partition layout of my Fusion Drive which had a capacity of about 1,1TB?
    Thank you for your help!
    Chris

Yes, I think my first attempt was also in EFI mode, this could have resulted in the second EFI part.

  • How to resize/erase a partitioned external drive

Just checking if I got this well before proceeding.
I have a new Western Digital external FW drive (1TB). I partitioned it in two for using with Time Machine (300GB) and the rest for my huge iTunes and iPhoto libraries.
Now I've changed my mind and I want to have a single partition (or no partitions at all ) in the WD drive and use it for my data only. I don't really care about the Time Machine partition at this time, since it's relatively new and I use SuperDuper! for my startup drive anyway. Right now I care about my libraries in the lower partition. I have another external, Maxtor 500GB hard drive that can be used for Time Machine and other backups afterwards.
The problem is: The first partition (the UPPER one) is the partition I'd like to erase, and the bigger one with my data is below. I've read there's no way to resize the lower partition without erasing it or corrupting/losing the data. I know I should think before partitioning in the first place.
So, my only choice would be backing up my libraries and other data from the WD in the 500GB drive, then erase the WD drive and copying everything back again to a single, new and fresh partition? Hope there were a better solution for this. If not, I'd appreciate a comment anyway.
Thanks for your help and comments in advance, gurus.
    JJ

Now that I think of it, I can try something. Copying the lower to the upper partition is a good option, and it could be done if I temporarily move SOME of the files stored in the lower one. Then copy the rest to the upper partition and do what you suggest.
Some questions about this: Can I first erase the data in the upper partition to have more room to copy data? And... is this resizing procedure SAFE for the rest of the data?
I'll think about it before proceeding, anyway
Thanks for your suggestion, it could be the answer.
