Fusion Drive on a 2010 iMac with 2tb HDD & 256gb SSD

Hi,
well basicailly the title says it all!
I have a 2010 iMac with the 256gb SSD and 2TB HDD which to me seems like it would be great option for the Fusion Drive...
Does anyone have any ideas on how I could make the drives work like the new Fusion Drive?
I've seen the Macworld Tutorial on a DIY Fusion Drive but i'm still not sure if doing that will work in the same way as the preinstalled 2012 iMac Fusion Drive... I know that Mac OSX will treat the combined drives as one, but in terms of moving files depending upon their usage is another matter.
If the Macworld step by step is followed will Mountain Lion handle frequently used files / apps like the apple presentation states or will it just use the drives as one and not increase the performance of my machine?
Any help on this would be much appreciated, especially if anyone has followed the Macworld steps etc!

Thanks fir the reply, I thought with the fusion drive the SSD and HDD were two seperate storage devices seen by OSX as one volume, and the software determins where the files most used will be placed and accessed from.

With this DIY approach it appears that the same functionality of the 2012 iMacs is achieved but simply not using the older Disk Utility, but a newer version only included on the newer models...

Any SATA SSD will work, whatever you are reading is incorrect.
You have 2 choices with this model-install the SSD in place of the HDD or the Superdrive.
If you are installing in place of Superdrive you will need some form of SSD Caddy-these can be found on the cheap at places like eBay, also OWC sell one called the DataDoubler.

If installing in place of old HDD you will notice that the propietary Temperature Sensor will not fit on the new drive, you will need to replace this with a sensor such as this or this

If you still have doubts contact OWC as mentioned above, I would start deciding whether your Superdive is needed or if you want to swap out the HDD.

2010 iMac with thunderbolt display

Guys,
I'd like to extend my 2010 iMac with a second 27" display. Initially I was considering going for a 27" thunderbolt display as this is the only display type that us still for sale. However, from browsing the forum, I understand that the 2010 iMacs have a mini display port which is unable to drive a thunderbolt display, is this correct? If so, what are my options for a matching 27" monitor?
I was thinking of the following options but I would like to have someone confirm the possibility.
1) use a mini display port to thunderbolt adapter: does this exist? Would it work? If not I would say apple removes additional sales because people are not going to update their iMac just for a thunderbolt port, they will get a non apple monitor to play nicely with their iMac.
2) more expensive, but use a new thunderbolt iMac and use the old iMac *** an external display: I read on the forum somewhere that thunderbolt devices can output to mini display port displays using mini display port cables. Is this true? If so, would I be able to expend my desktop this way?
3) can I still buy a new mini display port 27" cinema display to match my 2010 iMac?

The 27" Cinema Display is still available new from the online store, would be perfect for you. Also, don't be afraid of the refurb models available as well. Good way to save some money and get the same warranty coverage as new. Typing this on a 27" refurb iMac. Love it and saved a ton.

Make Your Own Yosemite Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
Click on the Erase button.
Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy and paste the following command line in its entirety into the Terminal window.
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite\ Developer\ Preview.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite\ Developer\ Preview.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN, enter admin password (will not echo to the window) then press RETURN again.
You need to have the installer in your Applications folder or change the paths in the above command line.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.

My CPU fan defaults to 3000RPM. I can rev the fan higher with 3rd party Fan controllers, but no lower than 3K.

OR you can short out the original temp sensor, to make the fans rev at quieter speeds.
You can also install an optical temp sensor in place of the old one, it will still read temps and adjust the fans accordingly, just not as good as an internal sensor.

I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?

Unable to install Windows on an 2010 iMac with home-made Fusion Drive

Hi there,
I've been very happy using mi iMac eversince I installed the SSD alongside the HDD. Only recently I tried to install Windows 7 but it doesn't seem to work. The installer runs, it seems as though Windows is installing but it doesn't ever seem to be able to boot. I've tried countless times. Everytime it boots to Windows it shows nothing but just a black screen with the cursor blinking at the top left corner.
Now, when I home-made the Fusion Drive the Mac OS was only 10.8.2 or older and I know that with 10.8.3 Apple has made improvements towards boot camp and especially the 3TB HDDs. I wonder if this could have anything to do.
Anyway, please enlighten me as to what is it that I need to do to make it work. I've been reading something about the position in which the Windows partition resides compared to GUID and EFI but honestly I have just the tiniest idea about all that. Just for the record, the following is what shows in the Terminal after diskutil list command:

Hello again, by reading a couple of posts I learnt the steps and so, using an external OS I repartitioned the two internal drives making sure the Windows partition wasn't part of the Fusion Drive. I was very excited as I was sure it would work and went ahead and started the Win7 installation even before the MacOS was restored into the iMac.
No good news though. The installer run as expected however, when the time came for the iMac to boot from the newly installed Windows7, all I saw was a blank screen and a blinking dash at the top left corner of the screen.
Lastly, this morning I woke up to see that my old system was fully restored from Time Machine external back up. I also leart that using the Boot Camp Assistant I could remove the Windows partition that I created on Terminal from the external OS, which was surprising, I honestly thought that that partitioning arrangement would be off-limits for the Boot Camp Assistant.
Still, I haven't been succesfull installing Windows back to my Mac, can anybody help?

My 2010 iMac with Mavericks 10.9.2 is very slow. How do I fix?

I have tried the usual stuff: disk permissions repair, SMC reset, PRAM reset, dragging caches to trash, restarting computer, etc. My internet connection and speed is good. Computer is mid-2010 i3 iMac with 10.9.2 OS, 12GB RAM, and there is plenty of unused space on my HDD.
The computer is very slow to start applications and load web pages. I ran Etresoft as some have suggested and the report is below. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Can I partition a 3tb fusion drive on a 2014 imac27", with boot camp, to let me install windows 7?

I have used boot camp to create a partition for Windows 7 on 3 earlier Macs (iMac 24" 2007 / Mac Pro 2009 / Macbook Pro 2009) as well as a recent Macbook Air 2012.
My main reason for this is to use Sage Account/Payroll, and also a couple of other Windows-specific programs.
I have just replaced the old iMac with a new iMac27", with a 3tb fusion drive, and want to partition it to install a new oem copy of Win 7 sp1.
However, I found an article on this (link: http://twocanoes.com/winclone/support/installing-windows-on-a-boot-camp-partitio n-on-a-3-tb-fusion-drive) implying this might not currently be officially supported by Apple & boot camp assistant, and providing a workaround procedure to create 3 partitions. The article begins with this note: "Important Note: This help document is for reference only, superceded by updates to OS X that include support for 3TB drives and Fusion drive in Boot Camp Assistant. Use Boot Camp Assistant to create the Boot Camp partition."
I have two questions:
1 - Can anyone advise if updates have now been made, to provide this support for partitioning the 3tb fusion drive?....and if not, is this likely to change soon?
2 - If this is still not officially supported, can anyone advise if they have successfully created a Windows partition on the 3tb fusion drive & installed Win 7?

Based on Apple's knowledge base. this configuration is supported for Windows 7 x64 and 8 using Mountain Lion 108.3 or higher. Simply use BootCamp Assistant to set it up.

For your application, you might also consider virtualization software like VMWare Fusion or Parallels.
I use both BootCamp and VMWare Fusion. Fusion is much easier to install, more flxible, runs at the same time as your Mac applications etc. For typical applications, there is no notable performance degradation.
If you need high performance graphics for gaming, BootCamp is still the best way to go. For all other applications, I prefer VMWare.

3TB Fusion Drive dying / dead? iMac late 2012

I purchased a 'Refurbished 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7' from the Apple UK refurb store in March 2013 with a 3TB Fusion Drive. It has been fine up until I installed Yosemite when it started to freeze all the time and I had the spinning ball all the time.
Only way to get back was to hold the button at the back and reboot. Kept doing this until I backed up and did a clean install of Yosemite. Fine for a week or two then happened again. I have just wasted a whole day trying to go back to Mavericks and it worked fine for an hour or two then went the same way, spinning ball, unresponsive so I can eliminate Yosemite now as it is fine on my Macbook and has been since the day I installed it (same day I installed in iMac).
Just tried another clean install but it first said the HD had failed and do I want to repair the Fusion drive? My guess is that the SSD is fine but the other drive is dying a slow death.
Have a genius appointment booked in for tomorrow so will take it up there to see what they say. Any idea on what price I am looking at for a Apple to fit a replacement 3TB HD at all? Paid £2k for this and not done 2 years yet so not best please and dubious about going for another Fusion Drive again. Didn't take Apple Care although should have really, especially with a refurb. Hindsight eh!
Just tried again to re-install Mavericks and getting 'Install Failed' The Installer could not start the computer from "Macinotosh HD". Try selecting your disk using the Startup Disk utility.

I purchased a 'Refurbished 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7' from the Apple UK refurb store in March 2013 with a 3TB Fusion Drive. It has been fine up until I installed Yosemite when it started to freeze all the time and I had the spinning ball all the time.
Only way to get back was to hold the button at the back and reboot. Kept doing this until I backed up and did a clean install of Yosemite. Fine for a week or two then happened again. I have just wasted a whole day trying to go back to Mavericks and it worked fine for an hour or two then went the same way, spinning ball, unresponsive so I can eliminate Yosemite now as it is fine on my Macbook and has been since the day I installed it (same day I installed in iMac).
Just tried another clean install but it first said the HD had failed and do I want to repair the Fusion drive? My guess is that the SSD is fine but the other drive is dying a slow death.
Have a genius appointment booked in for tomorrow so will take it up there to see what they say. Any idea on what price I am looking at for a Apple to fit a replacement 3TB HD at all? Paid £2k for this and not done 2 years yet so not best please and dubious about going for another Fusion Drive again. Didn't take Apple Care although should have really, especially with a refurb. Hindsight eh!
Just tried again to re-install Mavericks and getting 'Install Failed' The Installer could not start the computer from "Macinotosh HD". Try selecting your disk using the Startup Disk utility.
