Fusion Drive on Macbook Pro & Hibernation problem

Hi,
Two weeks ago I installed second SDD in my Optibay (Macbook Pro mid2010 13"). Now I have HDD (Seagate Momentus XT 750GB) + SSD (Kingston V300 60GB) in configuration like that:
1) HDD in normal bay (because of SMS)
2) SDD in optibay
I configured this drives to work as Fusion Drive (it's really fast now!), but the main problem is hibernation (known as deep sleep also).
When macbook goes sleep whole memory are written to disk (in my case - fusion drive), and when the battery die it should be resumed from disk. But I found, that people using OS X from optibay drive can't use hibernation. In this case the main HD is expanded on both drives (SDD + HDD), so this is a problem - memory image should be readed also from optibay/normal bay drives.
Is there any workaround or any chance to get hibernation on fusion drive working in Macbook?
The main reason I'm looking for solution is low battery problem - I can't sleep safely my computer on 2-3% of battery and I don't want to turn it off...
Best regards,
Dawid

I have the same physical setup (though it's a MacBook 5,1, the first unibody 13"), but haven't tried Fusioning-it. (I have been holding off for 10.8.3 in the hope that it will have a properly fusion-aware Disk Utility when I get into trouble; my understanding is that all official Fusion Drive systems have a custom build of 10.8.2 with changes in Disk Utility and, I assume, diskutil.)
As far as I know, and I'd love to be proved wrong, hibernation just can't work if the SSD is in the optibay (as mine is as well). It doesn't get power immediately on wake so it just doesn't work. The only thing you can do is disable hibernation support so that the system doesn't even try (saving you the hibernation-image space on the SSD); set OS X to restore your windows when you log back in; and then shut down when you're nearing zero battery. Alas.
If this can't be made to work when the SSD is the boot volume alone, I can't imagine there's a way to make it work when it's in fusion drive.

  • Fusion drive in MacBook Pro late 2011?

    Hi!
I am about to install a SSD in my MBP Late 2011 in the superdrive slot. The size of my hdd is 750 gb and I am going to install 120 ssd.
My question is... Do you recommend me create a fusion drive or just manage the storage by myself?
I like the idea of fusion drive rather than any other thing. Everything in the same unid and the system manage it for itself.
However, I have read some insights here and there about fusion drive is not as good idea as it seems in the beginning. Problems with the system (rainbow ball randomly)  and drop in the general performance after a while.... Additionally, the battery life decrease due to system moving the files from here to there to try to boost speed of the system. Besides the both disk will suffer more as a consequence of this extra work.
Right now I am more eager to keep it separate and manage the storage myself using a symbolic links.
Can anyone tell their own experience?
    Thanks in advance!
PS/ by the way... I will in either case I will perform a fresh install of the last version of mavericks without bring any old configuration of my previous arrangement.

Since your system doesn't ship with an option for 2 drives, the obvious recommendation is to not attempt anything that requires 2 drives (like a Fusion Drive setup).
You you can place your HDD in a tray and replace the optical drive. Doing this is hit-or-miss on if the HDD in the optical bay will work right, especially if it is a 6.0Gb rated drive. They seem to work fairly reliably for 1.5 or 3.0Gb drives, but not always so with newer, faster drives.
IF you you decide to try this, keep in mind that you don't have a SMS on the optical bay, and you will want to disable the SMS on the bay with the SSD.

I see a mention of Google Chrome and VirtualBox in your log. Stop using those and see if the situation changes? From what we know so far, the problem is a software one (Apple's fault), not a hardware problem. Mountain Lion is supposed to fix the issue, which should be out in about a week. So you could wait til then, upgrade to ML, and see if its still crashing or not.

How to replace hard drive in macbook pro?

    Hi S,
If you have the newer unibody style, it's very easy. If it's one of the earlier models, it's considerably more difficult. Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info > Hardware and find your Model Identifier. Then go to ifixit.com, or powerbookmedic.com or macsales.com or youtube or others and there are illustrated, detailed directions. Good luck to you and post back if you have further questions.

What is the best external hard drive with MacBook Pro?

I agree with Allan, and that link is also called OWC, their hard drives are great.  Have three of their Mercury Pro Elite 2 TB quad interface drives.  They will connect eSATA, Firewire 800 & 400, USB2, so broad reange of options.  Drives seem to come Mac HFS formatted, but I always reformat and partition the drives.  Service and quarantees are top notch.
They offer a wide range of drives/drive systems so like Allan said, spend some time seeing what the have.

I erased my drive on Macbook pro, trying to re-install os x Maverick but it is not available on App store, what should I do?

Install Yosemite instead of Mavericks. Or you can do the following if your computer supports Internet Recovery:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
