Fusion drive sound issue

I just bought a new iMac to record music and do graphic design. I was told to buy the fusion drive as it's faster and better etc, so I did. To my surprise, there's a terrible crackling noise after 10 minutes or so when I'm playing music through my quartet usb interface. Now, these are quality bits of technology and I need this fixed. I've seen a few problems about this online but I can't seem to get rid of the issue with updates. I didn't just blow €3000 for a big tv. Any help out there? Much appreciated.

Go to System Preferences->Personal->Security & Privacy and click on the ADVANCED tab in the lower-right corner. (You will probably have to click the AUTHENTICATE lock in the lower-left corner and provide your password first.)
Un-check the "Log out after X minutes of inactivity" box in the Advanced panel or set X to a large value that isn't likely to get in your way often.

  • Fusion drive capacity issue

    Hi,
the strangest thing happened to my iMac regarding the capacity of the hard drive.
In Disk Utility, the capacity is 1.12 Tb, out of which 338.64 Gb are used, leaving 781.7 Gb available. Instead, if I get info on the Macintosh HD, which is the only partition, the available capacity is 330.13 Gb and 310.45 are used. This oddity also appears in the system report, which I pasted below and highlighted in bold.

  • Fusion Drive partition issue

    Hello
I have partitioned my 3TB FusionDrive so that I have one main partition and one test partition: 2.8 TB and 250 GB (setup: late 2012 iMac, 3TB FusionDrive). After a couple of months, I tried to merge the two partitions — complete fail.
When I tried to erase the test partition, it suddenly became unaccessible and now there's no option to delete, merge, resize, whatever; booting into Disk Utility won't solve the make any difference either.
Could anyone explain the step-by-step, stupid-proof way of merging two FusionDrive partitions into one?

  • 27" iMac - i7 or fusion drive?

After nearly nine years of using my G5 PPC tower I've decided it's time to move onto a new computer, since I can't upgrade the OS beyond 10.5. I am looking at the 27" iMacs and trying to decide which configuration to choose. I guess I'm trying to decide between the 2.9 GHz model and the 3.4GHz one. (I don't see any value to the 3.2GHz model, since the $200 price diferential over the 2.9 gets only modest bumps to the processor and graphics card.)
I may end up biting the bullet and getting the 3.4GHz to get the i7 processor, and possibly adding the fusion drive for the speedy boot ups. But I wonder if the 2.9GHz model with the fusion drive would be pretty comparible to the i7 3.4GGHz without the fusion drive. The $400 difference between the base 2.9 and the 3.4 could be spent on the external optical drive and RAM.
I have read a lot of speed test on macworld.com, but they don't show the 3.4GGHz model without the fusion drive. The fusion drive sounds good, overall, but may add some complexity to the system, and resulting reliability issues. Despite the shortcomings of standard hard drives, mine has managed to churn away for nearly 9 years, so the technology is fairly reliable. Apple's fusion drive hasn't been around long enough for a good assessment of its reliability.
So I guess the question is, go for the 3.4 GHZ i7 model, with a standard iTB HD, or save some money on the 2.9GHz i5 with the fusion drive. I do use Photoshop and other creative suite products, along with the usual email, web browsing, etc. And, this is primarily for home use.

IMO, go for the 3.4 GHZ i7 model, with an 1TB HD, but buy your RAM elsewhere.

  • Fusion drive and backup/restore issues

    Hi,
since I installed a fusion drive on my early 2008 iMac, consisting of an internal 256GB SSD and an (external FW800) 320GB hard disk, I occassionally run into trouble when system updates are pending. In the past, at worst the time machine backup couldn't be restored and I had to reformat and reinstall the system from scratch - which is not really comfortable!
Currently, running Mountain Lion, when I try to select the startup disk, it complains that Boot-Caches on the Boot-Helper-Partition cannot be created. Nevertheless the system starts fine (and runs fast ;-).
Before upgrading to Mavericks, I would like to know
         - if someone else ran into similar problems with fusion drives, when updating/upgrading system software.
         - Is it normal that a Time Machine backup cannot be (completely) restore a Fusion drive?
Yes, I know that having the harddisk part of a fusion drive externally is not recommended/supported by Apple - and my Mac is nearly 6 years old, but that would not explain why system updates/restores nearly always fail and sometimes the Time Machine backup drive has a broken file system (needed reformatting)! And I always checked the disks with Disk Utility prior to updating...
    Any comments are appreciated.

  • Issue with Fusion drive (Late 2012 iMac)

I have a late 2009 iMac that has been backed up with Time Machine.  I recently picked up a late 2012 iMac with the 1TB Fusion drive.  When I first plugged in my Time Machine drive, I was asked if I'd like to transfer my files over.  I did, and everything was working fine.  I was using about 800GB of my 1.12TB Fusion Drive.
I recently decided to add a new partition to the Macintosh HD in order to put Windows on it. I did this through the Disk Utility.  I noticed that it was taking an inordinately long time to create this partition.  Finally, I realized that the Disk Utility was locked up.  I was forced to reboot to fix it.
I went back and tried again and I got an error stating that the drive had errors and I couldn't make a new partition.  So I attempted to "repair disk".  That gave me an error "Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility."
So I rebooted into recovery.  Recovery was absolutely no help either.  It couldn't repair the drive, even though it had me erase all the data.  So I downloaded 10.8.2 on my Mac Mini and made a boot disk out of my Thunderbolt drive.  I booted into OS X and tried again to repair, thinking it would work since the Fusion was no longer the boot drive.  No such luck.  I then booted back into recovery and had recovery download and install a fresh version of 10.8.2.  2+ hours into the download/install, I get an error that says "OS X couldn't be installed because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired."
Ok, so as a final attempt, I had recovery use my time machine to start over.  That worked, kinda.  It now shows my Fusion drive as being completely filled in Disk Utility (49KB remains, only about 800 or so was used before), and Finder shows the Fusion drive as being 860GB capacity with 837GB used.  I still can't repair the disk.  And now my Time Machine acts like I'm working on an entirely new computer and says there's not enough room on the drive unless I format my Time Machine drive and start over.
Yeah, TL;DR, but does anybody have any idea how I can get this issue resolved?  I wonder if doing the TM restore from my 2009 iMac may have introduced the non-Fusion version of Disk Utilities that doesn't know how to fix my issue.

    Yes I have AppleCare.
Before that I've now made a bootable disk and tried to repair the internal drive, but this was not possible.
I have a Time Machine backup, but excluded some temporary folders.
Is there a way to access these folders in case they aren't in a damaged area?
    Maybe using "Target Disk mode"?
    I've never done this before.
This Mac has no FireWire, but we have an adaptor for Thunderbolt to FireWire - could I connect an older Mac with FireWire using this adaptor for Target Disk Mode?
    Many thanks.

HHow can I compare the fusion drive to the ssd drive in the MAC mini

    Lanny wrote:

I agree with the second half of your statement but my experience with the fusion drive VS a standard 5400 RPM HHD is that it is significantly faster, not a little. Apple has managed to find a good balance between permanently storing often used items on the SSD and using it for buffering.

  • Fusion drive keeps needing re-install

    Hi,
I've just bought a new iMac (27", i7 3.4, 3tb Fusion drive, 32GB ram...) and when im installing software (adobe CS6) the machine locks up and i have to boot up in safe mode. I run a check and i always have to re-install the system software which is a pain! Do you think the fusion-drive is faulty? I've been buying mac's for over ten years and never had anything like this happen!
Any ideas before it goes back?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello Greenacreguy,
Based on the error message you are getting, its recommended you do a clean reload of your BlackBerry software.
It sounds like you may need to reload your device software.
You can follow  KB11320 for the reload process but be sure to back up your BlackBerry before hand as all user data will be deleted.
It is advised to do a selective restore of your data after the reload. You can consult KB23680 (for Desktop Manager 6.0) or KB10339 for all other versions.

  • Office mac keeps asking for license key with fusion drive

I'm posting this in case anyone else is having this trouble where Office for Mac 2011 keeps asking for the license key. I have a later 2013 iMac with Fusion drive and never have been able to use office on this computer without entering the key. In talking with Microsoft they removed office and all the files and reinstalled with no help. In speaking with Apple, they said there is a known issue with Microsoft Office and the Fusion drive and Microsoft is working on a patch. Evidently the fusion drive moves the files around and to Microsoft that looks like new hardware so it prompts for the key. Realy annoying! Microsoft

I'm a certified Apple consultant and I recently hit this issue at an installation. On seven iMacs with the Fusion drive, I deleted the "Thunderbolt Bridge" interface from the Network System Preference. We then rebooted the computers, entered the product key one more time, and so far, the problem has disappeared and survives subsequent rebootings.
Obviously, if you are frequently networking two Macs using Thunderbolt, this isn't a good long-term solution (though it is easily added back). However, it does appear to work. I have no sound theory as to why it works, except that Office might be interpreting the existence of that bridge as evidence that the software was copied onto a machine instead of properly installed. This is just a wild guess, though.
I have no idea if it will work for others, but hey, the forums are for throwing out these ideas and seeing if one of them sticks for most people. So...there it is.

  • Audio problems Fusion Drive

Okey, i've been surfing TOO MUCH TIME for answers and fixes with the known issues with Audio Interfaces + iMac 2013 Fusion Drive.
C'mon apple, I'm not paying too much money for a lame support. I bought the iMac for audio production and what i found? That I can't use it. And I want the Fusion Drive, so I'm not gonna buy a iMac with 1 TB SSD or 1 TB HD.
So, Apple, who is gonna pay the time that I can't work with audio? How am I suposed to work until you fix this issue that's not fixed yet since MONTHS ago?

Good News:  I can confirm that OS X 10.9.2 fixes the issue with the Fusion Drive and MBox Mini (and possibly other USB Audio devices).
    My Hardware:
    27" iMac, latest version, 3.5 GHz i7
    3TB Fusion Drive
    8 GB RAM
Drobo 5D hooked up via Thunderbolt
2 24" LED Cinema displays, one directly connected to Thunderbolt, one chained off the Drobo's second Thunderbolt port
MBox Mini connected via USB on Cinema Display that is chained off the Drobo
    Logic Pro X 10.0.6
    Previous symptoms:
Audio drop outs after a few minutes in all sound related applications
    Audio degradation in Logic
Both iTunes and Spotify Apps could (and often) froze machine (no mouse or trackpad or keyboard input until hard restart)
None of these issues occured when switching all audio to go through iMac's built in speakers.
Last night I installed the Mavericks 10.9.2 Combo Update (13C32) available right now only to developers, but you can find it, it's out there.
    Everything works just fine now.
    Stress test:
Before I went to bed I put a large Spotify playlist on shuffle and repeat, did the same for an iTunes playlist, and looped a 32 track Logic project all at once (yes, this sounded horrible!) and turned the volume down on my MBox Pro.  When I woke up and turned the volume up on my MBox Mini, all was still playing through my Event 20/20 speakers.  I have worked all day today in Logic and it works great.
I thought I was going to have to send my iMac back for one with just an SSD or perform the Fusion Drive split that people were talking about, but all is well.
Hopefully this update will be released soon for everyone.
Hope this helps.  I personally was heartbroken for a couple days as my new machine was pretty much useless and I had already given my awesome early 2011 quad-core MacBook Pro to my brother.
    Keep the faith

  • HP Envy 4-1215dx Sound Issues

Hi, I own an HP Envy 4-1215dx. It's a great unit overall, but I am having problems with the audio on it. From the day I took it out of the box it will randomly spew out quick bursts of buzzing/crackling/digital noise whenever I try and play some sort of media, it will appear to have stopped for a while but then start doing it again, it is quite intermitten. It does it with sound from the internet such as youtube, playing MP3's, and even in Games. It is extremely irritating and I need to find a solution. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the audio drivers and have had no luck. Doing a quick google search, I found out that there are several other people with the same problem, yet the only answer they get back is to reinstall the drivers. I have done this already and it does not fix the problem. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hello Livingedge,
I understand that the driver is an older version. This is the version that is available for your specific product on the HP Driver & Software page. I have been able to locate a driver that is also IDT, but the release date is 2013-09-30. I have included that driver here for you 'IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver'.
If this driver fails to resolve the sound issue, I would keep an eye on the 'HP Driver & Software' page. This is where if and any updates are available, will be provided here.
    Thank you.

  • Creating a Fusion Drive Safely

Hello.  I currently have a macbook pro mid 2012 13 inch with a 256 SSD start up and a 1T regular hard drive with 16GB RAM.
Even though the 1T hard drive is in the DVD drive it sort of just acts like an external hard drive as it shows up as a separate drive in finder and I am wondering if one of you amazing people can tell me how to make a fusion drive in a way that is safe and time machinable, so that for all functional purposes I just turn on my computer and it looks like I have a 1.256T system that flows perfectly.
Also if this is achieved and I can time machine back it up; in a few years when I upgrade to say the new 2T Macbook pro ssd will there be any issues importing directly from time machine if my previous computer, the one I am using now, had or has a fusion drive.
    Thank you.

Oh, my solid stage 256 is where the original hard drive used to be and the 1terrabye regular hard drive is in where the dvd drive used to be.  If the dvd drive is the optical drive then I should be having the correct hardware configuration.
If that is correct and I do have the correct configuration, can you please share with me a recommended link or procedure to follow for making me a DIY Fusion Drive.
I talked to one of the techie guys from Simply Computing yesterday (apple authorized dealers in canada) and he said that he has this setup and it works great and when I mentioned about performance, he said that there is a slight reduction in speed and described it as, "A normal solid state is 4 times as quick and with a fusion it is 3.5 times".
If all this info is correct I would just like to proceed with it and get a recommendation for how to do it or a suggested link that has been used and proven to work for such DIY Fusion Drives.  Is the one that I shared good enough for it.  Thanks everyone for your kind time and attention to this.

  • Creating a Fusion Drive ?

    Hi All,
I have a mid-2011 iMac which I plan to install a Samsung 840 Pro SSD to use as part of a Fusion Drive setup.
Typically I backup using Carbon Copy and wil be taking a backup prior to the mod.
Once the drive has been configured......   will I need to reinstall the OSX from scratch, or is it just a matter of bringing back the Backup ??
    Pete

When you use CoreStorage to format the SSD and mechanical HD it will be a destructive format/paritioning so the new Fusion disk will look like one HD but in fact will be two under the hood.   You should be able to use CC to restore your image as it will look like a single drive.
I'm not sure if that model iMac has a Fusion tool supplied by Apple or not.  I think you have to use one of the many guides found online to manually configure the drives to be a single Fusion drive using diskutil at the command line.  If I remember correctly, you'll need to boot with a thumb drive with 10.8.3 installation on it.  Then go to the Terminal to configure the Fusion drive setup.  Then you would have to find some way to run CC from a bootable thumbdrive, etc.  I think you could boot the backup disk made with CC then run CC from it to clone to the new Fusion drive.  That should work.  Worse case scenario, you always could just re-install OS X on the Fusion drive and then use the Apple Migration Assistant to grab your data from the CC'd drive.
Either way, give yourself at least half a day in the event you run into issues and have to work around things.
