Fusion Drive vs. Little Big Disc for LR 4

Help me understand which would be better for my workflow, just sticking with the Fusion Drive, or employing the LaCie Little Big Disk.
I shoot around 40 weddings a year, each wedding is around 30GB.
I keep one wedding on my Mac at a time, via LR4. That wedding will stay there until it's finished. But on Saturdays, when I shoot a new wedding, that new wedding temporarily comes into LR for culling and a sneak peek. When I finish the sneak peek for my bride, I save the XMP files and then remove the new wedding from Lightroom.
My plan is to keep my main wedding on the Fusion Drive in Lightroom, and at 30GB, I assume the whole experience will be blazing fast, since the Fusion Drive is offering 400MB/S +
But my question is this : should I keep my other unedited weddings on a LaCie Little Big Disk? Or on the 5400RPM HDD inside the iMac? The LaCie offers read/write times around 200MB/S via Thunderbolt. But apparently that's only true for sequential transfers. Random access is more like 1.5MB/S. From what I understand, this is true of all HDD Raids. If you want fast random reads you simply cannot use an HDD.

I currently have a 27" iMac with 16GB RAM and that is plenty for the work I do. I edit short films (any where between 5 and 45 minutes, music videos, and documentaries (~5-60 minutes). Most of the media is 1080p.
You will be fine for the work you are doing. Just make sure you have at least a 7200 RPM external drive to store your media then some where to back up your media/project. (do not edit with out backups!!)

Fusion drive solution to activate Office for Mac 2011

Activating Office 2011 is a known issue for Fusion Drive Macs.
Activation is tied to the drive. According to Microsoft the solid state part of the Fusion Drive generates a new disk id every time the Mac is started. So Mac Office thinks it a new system at each startup and will require activation.
This solution was suggested by Microsoft Support. Please let us know if this works for you.
Follow the steps below to remove the “Thunderbolt bridge”:
1. Click on the Apple icon and click on “System Preferences”
2. Click on “Network”
3. Look for “Thunderbolt Bridge” on the left side.
4. Highlight the Bridge and click on the “-” sign to remove it.
5. Restart the computer and enter the Product key for Microsoft Office. Restart again.

I don't normally advocate users re-install Office to fix an issue but in your case I think it's worth a try. The Mavericks update seems to have fixed the issue for most users. I would suggest the complete removal rather than the simple removal of dragging the Office folder in Applications to the trash.

How in the world can I select my external hard drive as a scratch disc for video? Please skip the obvious, like 'is it plugged in?'

At wit's end trying to select my external hard drive to load video on. Time Machine backed stuff up on it so the computer knows it's there but it won't show anywhere else, iMovie or FCE4.

I've had very little time to piddle around with this iMac and fce4 since I got it a few years back but I DO remember seeing an option back then--when capturing video from the camera--to choose some other scratch disc. Some time after buying and plugging in the ext. drive I clicked on Time Machine (not even knowing what it was--some window popped up and it looked good). I wonder if turning on Time Mach has locked me out of the ext. drive. It doesn't show up ANYWHERE ANYTIME now, not under system pref., user pref. in fce4 or iMovie or anything else EXCEPT when I click on Time Machine it does tell me I've 2.97 terrabytes of space (which has to be the ext. drive; the iMac has 500 gb). I'm thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling fce4 and starting over.

Fusion Drive or HDD for video editing

I'm editing videos with Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro with a Macbook Pro and I'll be upgrading to an iMac soon. There's an offer in a web store for a new iMac 27" 3,4ghz with a 1tb hdd drive for 2314 dollars. There's not an upgrade possibility, so I would be missing out the Fusion Drive. If I bought the same setup with a Fusion Drive from Mac Store I'd have to pay 2848 dollars, so I would be paying 534 dollars for a Fusion Drive. This seems a bit too much for my budget, though I'd like to have the FD. I went a Apple certified store and they said the performance is seen in opening apps, overall performance and for example scrolling the iPhoto folders. These don't matter at all to me, only what matters is that I will be using this computer for at least 4-5 years and planning on editing 4k video files on it, so it doesn't get old too quick. I'm also planning to buy a external ssd in the future to store all my video files in. So is the Fusion Drive a must have and something I should pay 543 dollars more or could I do with a 1tb hdd -drive and a external thunderbolt drive? Thanks for the answers!

After numerous pageouts and pageins I was forced to go from 4GB of RAM to 8GB of ram due to my Photoshop work, and that was just photoshop. I could have probably gotten by at 6 GB but I figured what the heck. If you get to a place where you need to let your machine sit and render for a while and then want to work in Photoshop for anything but the smallest images, you'll definitely be helped by more than 4GB of memory. BUT - and this is a big but - the iMac should be capable of doing the work. What is sigificant to you is unknown to us. Some folks gag at the thought of not running FCP or even their basic computer, without RAID and consider RAID a significant improvement.
You realize that if you want FULL hdef capability you need RAID, Compressed HD and DV can be done without RAID. I dunno about external RAID on iMacs via firewire. If you are doing full HD then you'll probably want a Mac Pro. If you are not doing full HD then your iMac would be very capable. After all, it's still much faster than many of the old G4 machines that did video and photoshop in years past. Your renders will take a bit longer and photoshop may page out a bit more, but it will all eventually work. If you are making money with it, get the Mac Pro. If not and money is tight the iMac will work.
I think though, when you look at the 24" iMac (the smaller ones use cheap TN screens that are worthless for photography) and add the memory you need and add in the cost of an external HD setup for FCP you will find it won't be that expensive to get a BARE bones Mac and add memory and other internal HD's from Crucial and other suppliers. Dell makes some decent, not too expensive 24" monitors and you'll find the cost of a MacPro won't be that huge - especially after you look at the price of FCP Studio + the Master Collection.

Any Thoughts on New iMac Fusion Drive for Editing Video

I was wondering if there were any thoughts about the new iMac for editing 720/1080 HD video from say an iPhone 5 or Canon Power Shot camera. The drive speed is now only 5400 RPM in the 21.5" model. I was curious if the the combo SSD/5400 RPM HDD had the same editing power as as a 7200 RPM drive.

Thanks, I've read it, well I should say I've tried to read it. Somewhat over my head, but not totally. I'm just curious if some of the video editing tasks would be done on the HDD or faster SSD drive. I'll have to go back to the article and see if there is any mention of that type of task.
I'm a little disappointed that you need to move up to the 27" iMac to get a 7200 RPM Fusion Drive. Do not need a 27" desktop.

Is coughing up $250 for fusion drive worth it?

I was gonna get the base model 27" iMac. First one ill ever own. I just can't decide if paying extra for the fusion drive is gonna be worth it or not. Is there a BIG difference?

I created one myself in my 2011 MacBook Pro. Love it. Originally had a 240GB Intel SSD. Got an Optibay to install the original 750GB drive into. Now I've got the storage I need with the speed I've grown accustomed to.
I'd highly recommend it, especially on the newer iMacs where replacing/swapping hard drives isn't done quite as easily.

RAID Slice Failed on my 2tb Lacie Little Big Drive

I was working in FCPX 10.8 on my Macbook Air using my 2tb Lacie Little Big Drive with thunderbolt connection when I got an improper disk removal message pop up. I hadn't removed the cable and the power had been on all of the time. From then on I couldn't get my drive to mount. I was working from this drive that is RAID 0. I have also tried the drive on my imac but no joy either.
I have used disk utility to verify and it says that all seems ok. But when you look at one of the RAID Slices it says Failed.

I have also tried Disk Warrior but it only sees the drive in the hardware section and again says that the drive appears to be functioning normally.
Is there any way of fixing this or will I need to re format. I will lose a fairly important project if this is the case.

Your LaCie Little Big Drive contains two 1 TB hard drives configured as a Raid 0 striped volume. I believe Raid 0 is the “as shipped” setup. It improves disk performance by splitting the data stream such that each drive only has to process half of the data.
The downside of a Raid 0 setup is that all data will be lost if either of the drives fail. Unfortunately, that appears to be your situation as the Disk Utility screen shot shows that hard drive disk 1s2 has failed. You haven’t found any obvious problems in the troubleshooting you’ve done, so your best bet would probably be to contact LaCie and ask for their help before attempting to reformat the drive. As you know, reformatting will eliminate any possibilty of recovering your important project.
I use a similar LaCie Thunderbolt drive configured as Raid 0 on my iMac. FCPX performance, especially playback, is far superior to my USB 2.0 external drives and somewhat better than my FW800 drive. I copy clips I’m using to the LaCie drive and keep the originals on a separate external drive. I believe this is now referred to as a “managed” library in FCPX 10.1 which, in my opinion, greatly simplifies backup and protection of one’s work.

Disk Warrior and a Lacie little big drive

I have a 5 month old Lacie little big drive which I use for back ups etc. Yesterday I plugged it in and got the message ' The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer'
I have tried to see what the problem is through Disk Warrior. DW takes a couple of hours rebuilding the directory structure and mounts the drive.
The problem I have I cannot do anything with the data/drive as it is locked. I have followed the advice in the DW manual and cannot find how to unlock the drive through DU? HELP!

At the end of the DW process, does DW permit you to review the rebuilt directory structure before committing? If so, DW will mount the disk for you to review. At that point, you should have read access to the disk as if it was a regular local volume.
If you cannot figure out how to fix the problem, you can use that feature to copy off your data. If you have enough room on another disk, you can even make a disk image of the "for review" disk using Disk Utility. After making sure the disk image mounts, you can reformat the drive and restore from the disk image.
I did that once when directory damage was too severe for DW to fix completely. However, it let me use that review feature to get most of my data back.

You can't add an internal drive, but you can add as much storage as you want via Thunderbolt.

Boot camp for Win 8.1 on 3tb Fusion drive, Yosemite

As many other have reported on the internet I am having problems installing windows on my iMac 27' late 2014 3tb fusion drive, where the partition I create falls outside the 2.2tb limit that prevents windows to be installed when selecting disk under the windows installation (i.e, same problem as Win 8.1, iMac Retina 3TB Fusion, Yosemite, Boot Camp fail!).
Is my understanding correct that this issue was solved in the OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.3 or was all they did to make sure boot camp could create a partition, but windows still couldn't find it?
I am using Yosemite 10.10.2 and I am wondering if for some reason they didn't include this update?
Has anyone successfully installed windows through boot camp on a 3tb fusion drive on yosemite, without 'manually' dividing the 3tb fusion into two partitions, and then creating the windows partition within the first partition?

Office mac keeps asking for license key with fusion drive

I'm posting this in case anyone else is having this trouble where Office for Mac 2011 keeps asking for the license key. I have a later 2013 iMac with Fusion drive and never have been able to use office on this computer without entering the key. In talking with Microsoft they removed office and all the files and reinstalled with no help. In speaking with Apple, they said there is a known issue with Microsoft Office and the Fusion drive and Microsoft is working on a patch. Evidently the fusion drive moves the files around and to Microsoft that looks like new hardware so it prompts for the key. Realy annoying! Microsoft

I'm a certified Apple consultant and I recently hit this issue at an installation. On seven iMacs with the Fusion drive, I deleted the "Thunderbolt Bridge" interface from the Network System Preference. We then rebooted the computers, entered the product key one more time, and so far, the problem has disappeared and survives subsequent rebootings.
Obviously, if you are frequently networking two Macs using Thunderbolt, this isn't a good long-term solution (though it is easily added back). However, it does appear to work. I have no sound theory as to why it works, except that Office might be interpreting the existence of that bridge as evidence that the software was copied onto a machine instead of properly installed. This is just a wild guess, though.
I have no idea if it will work for others, but hey, the forums are for throwing out these ideas and seeing if one of them sticks for most people. So...there it is.

First, I suspect Apple fine tuned its choice of SSD size for the Fusion drive based on the best performance/price ratio. I'd be surprised if a larger SSD provided any improvement that would justify the added price of a larger SSD.
Second, if I could justify the cost of a 960 SSD drive I wouldn't bother with a Fusion drive!

I am confused by the installation step that requires you to create a bootable USB drive for windows installation. What is the ISO image and why has it selected my Passport backup drive as the destination disc?

In the bootcamp installation it asks me to create a bootable USB drive for Windows Installation. To do so, I must choose an ISO image. What is that? When I click "choose" I don't understand the options presented. Is this the destination of the partition or where Windows will reside on the Mac? Why does it also indicate the the destination disk si my WD Passport Back up drive?

OK, so I have an apple superdrive hooked up to my mini (along with my Passport back up drive). I also have the discs for both 64bit and 32bit Windows along with the product key. I am still not sure what to do when faced with the options after "choose".
