Future expectations for SAP BI

Hey everybody!
I´m currently writing my diploma thesis about SAP Netweaver BI.
What can you tell me about the future expectations?
When will BI 7.1 released and what will be the main advances?
What general issues will be in focus in the future?
How will the acquisition of Business Objects affect SAP BI?
Thanks for your help!!!

Hello Philipp,
Regarding the acquisition and what would be the future for both BO and SAP BI as well as the proffesionals working in the same is explained well in the blogs by John Reed . Here is the link :
http://sap.blogs.techtarget.com/2007/10/26/sap%E2%80%99s-bo-acquisition-impact-on-sap-bi-consulting-part-two/
Also the impact in the future would be on the User Interface for BI .
My two cents .
Hope it helps.
Thanks,

  • FUTURE SCOPE FOR SAP

    Hi
    Iam going to take SAP certification form SIEMENS Chennai. With rumors of recession setting in US, what will be impact on SAP Jobs? Is it going to be tough to get entry job because of the recession?
    Rgds
    VENKAT

    Hi,
    Recession affects the global market. Many of the US projects may put on hold/Canceled. But on the other side, many organizations across the globe other than US are also implementing SAP widely. Though the US market goes down, the other market will not have much impact. So, don't worry about the recession rumors.  Try to be neutral..........
    One more important thing for you, even if you are a Certified Consultant from Siemens, there is no guarantee that you would get placed soon. It all depends up on your skill set.

  • About future for SAP XI?

    Hi Experts,
    Im new to SAP.
    Im an MCA fresher and im planning to go for SAP XI training with my friend's suggestion.
    Just i wanted to know the openings for XI and Future for XI.
    Can i start my career as XI fresher?
    what are the basic requirements i should have if i go for XI training?
    Kindly do needful.
    regards,
    Arvind.

    Hi Arvind Subramaniam  ,
    >>Can i start my career as XI fresher?
    Yes. It is a good Netweaver technology & u can either try as a developer or at Admin side. But there r good oppurtinities as a XI Developer.
    >>what are the basic requirements i should have if i go for XI training?
    XI is configuration type & maximum stuff wil be mapping . But , sometimes there arises a need to import JAVA code into XI. Hence if u know JAVA/J2EE it's a added advantage.
    All the best for u'r success in future!

  • ECATT integration with Mercury QuickTest for SAP

    For the past few months I have been evaluating Quick Test Professional from Mercury and eCATT (extended Computer Aided Testing Tool) from SAP as testing tools for SAP. Mercury has a strong partnership with SAP and the two companies have offered ways to integrate their two products. Has anyone ever used eCATT in conjunction with QTP? What are your thoughts on this partnership? Is it worth $10,000 to pick up Mercury's QTP when SAP's eCATT is Free with SAP? I think the functionality is comparable, although QTP is easier to use and can interact with 3rd party applications. If anyone has used both QTP and eCATT, do you think these two tools are an either/or option or do they compliment each other?

    Ben,
    Good to hear you liked the article. Look out for another contribution in SPJ in the near future
    I have attempted to answer your questions - all prefixed with <b>==> SAP (JM)</b> in your original text:
    This document describes the functionality, abilities and benefits that would be lost in an SAP automated testing solution that excludes Mercury’s QuickTest. Assuming that SAP’s eCATT is the only tool used for SAP testing there will be the following limitations:
    Script Creation
    SAP eCATT cannot record certain types of report screens in TCD(Record) mode. i.e. MB58(view stock levels)
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> This is true - but you can use the SAPGUI command, which uses the same technical interface as QTP.
    Although the ‘active screen simulator’ in eCATT contains data, it is usually not visible and the user has to guess where to click in order to capture a value. The other option is to forgo the active screen and do all of the work through the command interface.
    The active screen in QuickTest allows the user to see the exact state of the screen that was recorded and access the fields in that screen.
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> A valid criticism of eCATT. From Release 6.40 (SAP NetWeaver 04), a script-wide search function makes using the command interface easier.
    The recorded script is one command, (i.e. TCD(VA01, VA01_1) is the command for an entire sales order), therefore Scripting logic must be placed before, after or around a transaction. There is less freedom in scripting inside of a transaction.
    In the Expert view of QTP users can add or delete visual basic statements during any portion of the transaction. Each step, down to a click or keystroke is recorded as an individual statement that can be modified or deleted. Logic such as loops and conditions can be placed around any set of steps.
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> Using the SAPGUI command in eCATT, you can create commands that cover a single screen, providing more of the kind of flexibility that you find in QTP.
    The eCATT tool does not allow individual steps in a single transaction recording to be rearranged or deleted. If a user makes a mistake while recording, the entire transaction must be re-recorded.
    QuickTest allows users to freely remove steps that were mistakes or errors after a transaction has been recorded.
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> Again, using SAPGUI in eCATT, this is possible. Admittedly tricky in Release 6.20, but very simple in Web AS 6.40.
    SAP’s eCATT cannot inherently read excel spreadsheets for data driven testing. The eCATT tool allows for data driven testing through its own data tables. These are useful for entering small sets of data. For eCATT to test large sets of data created in excel spreadsheets there are three solutions:
    1. Purchase conversion software from SAP
    2. Write an in-house conversion script
    3. Enter data manually into the eCATT data table
    QuickTest stores its data table as an excel-readable .xls file.
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> 1. Who is selling the conversion software?
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> You can use the class CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES to upload a tab-delimited file into an internal table in a test script (using an Inline ABAP routine)
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> Data upload/download is available in Web AS 6.40
    Test scripts in eCATT are limited to about 40 parameters.
    In QucikTest the only limitation to the number of parameters or number of iterations is the maximum number of columns and rows in an excel worksheet.
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> Where does this limitation come from? Does it seem to be technical, or more practical in nature?
    Scripts that enter a single line item in a table cannot be modified to enter multiple items later. A new script with multiple line items must be recorded.
    A script in QTP can be modified to add a single line item or multiple line items to a table regardless of how many items were entered when the transaction was recorded.
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> This is possible in eCATT if you use the SAPGUI command. Because a single SAPGUI command can cover a small part of a transaction, you can isolate the "line item" section in a single command, then put a loop around it. I have an example of this if you need one.
    Script Execution and Analysis
    SAP eCATT will respond with a pass/fail status based on its own criteria before any checkpoints have been added. Although eCATT allows for additional checkpoints, there is a minimum level of pre-set requirements that eCATT looks for in order to allow a test to pass. These pre-set requirements cannot be viewed or changed and tests may “fail” even when, from the user’s perspective, the transaction has responded exactly as expected.
    Quick Test will only fail a test if the script if it was unable to recognize an object on the screen or complete every statement. Otherwise failure points are completely determined by the insertion of check points by the Test engineer. QuickTest also provides the option to ignore missing objects or uncompleted steps.
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> Default conditions in eCATT (for example, fail if an error message occurs) can be overwritten. See eCATT documentation on http://help.sap.com for details (use the NetWeaver 2004 documentation - it is more comprehensive). Then, the only conditions under which the test would fail automatically would be a system error (RFC destination not available, or similar)
    If SAP experiences a system failure, eCATT will fail too and test results may be lost.
    If SAP were to crash QuickTest can take a screenshot and pinpoint the location in the code where the script failed.
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> If you are working remotely (test case and application under test in different systems) you will get a log in the central test system, even if the SUT fails. The only circumstances under which everything is lost would be a full GUI crash!
    eCATT cannot use the SAP logon pad to open a new session and log on as a new user.
    In QuickTest new sessions can be opened and different users can be logged in with encrypted passwords.
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> eCATT uses System Data Containers and RFC destinations to log onto multiple systems as a specified user. This is more flexible than using hard-coded user names in a script and allows you to leverage concepts such as Trusted RFC or SSO.
    Aside from printing results on paper, users cannot view test results without an SAP logon to the system where the tests were executed.
    Mercury provides a test viewer that can be installed on any machine and allows users without the QuickTest application to view and analyze test results.
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> eCATT logs can be downloaded in a variety of formats from the log view in transaction SECATT (via the Print Preview function, then List -> Save).
    Cannot view a screenshot of the failed step.
    QuickTest provides the option to capture a screen shot at the point of failure.
    <b>==> SAP (JM):</b> Again, a valid criticism. This has been rectified for the next release of eCATT (will be available with Solution Manager 4.0). When playing back a SAPGUI command, you will be able to capture screenshots at various points in time ranging from "every screen" to "on error".

  • BODS : Datastore options for SAP R/3 - need clarity for use

    Hi All.
    Another request to understand the datastore optiono n BOXI 3.1 BODS existing installation.
    We are trying to pull a new table from SAP R/3 into BODS and we find that ABAP program is not getting generated as expected. And terminates. When we tested a simple workflow.
    While creating a new datastore for SAP R/3 Source :
    When we look at the datastore we find the following options for R3 Source ;
    ABAP Execution option :
    Execute preloaded
    Generate and execute
    Under data transfer method we find ;
    Shared directory
    Direct download
    FTP
    Custom transfer
    Then we have working directory on sap server
    local directory
    generated ABAP Directory
    Am testing a simple workflow of pulling data from SAP R/3 in a dev machine.
    But am not understanding.
    which option of ABAP Execution, and data transfer , path would work in co-ordination.
    Because when i say direct download and say generate and execute it throws error.
    Can anyone help me with combinations of the options to choose for a R/3 source. And the implications thereof.
    I had created a folder under local bods server D:\Bodi. And given the path for data transfer.
    But the files are not getting generated for whatsoever reasons.
    Any advise on this would be helpful.
    Also found a bit unusual, that there was no button to test the connection to be correct or not, a TEST connection button is not there. Which i felt, could be included.
    Note : on the existing production system, we have chosen execute preloaded; shared directory on sap server. and shared that folder path for the user and given full rights. But while we try to do the same on the dev machine a test before transporting on production, a simple workflow does not work.
    would like to know what settings on sap server, really affect the data store options on the BODS
    thanks

    Indeed, BODS <> SAP connectivity can be tricky.
    For a development environment, I suggest you select the option "Generate and execute" for your "ABAP Execution Option." What this means is that DS will create, on the fly, small-ish ABAP programs. These ABAP programs will be written, in plain text, to a local directory on the DS job server, in the folder specified in "Generated ABAP Directory".  You can see them in there after an attempted job execution, assuming the job involves the creation of an ABAP program.  The ABAP program name is specified in the properties of an ABAP data flow, under Options > ABAP Program Name.  If you can't, perhaps the DS job server process doesn't have full rights to that folder - ?  After being generated on-the-fly, they'll be transferred to SAP to execute.  The SAP user you use to connect to SAP must have sufficient rights to upload-and-execute these ABAP programs, and that's a fairly substantial set of rights. What's required is documented in the BODS supplement for SAP. Often, to get things running, your friendly local Basis admin will grant SAP_ALL to the DS user, to see what rights are being invoked.
    Once all that jazz is working, you need to get the data back. There are a number of ways to do this. The method of data transfer is specified in "Data transfer method," where, ignoring "Custom transfer," you have three choices:
    1) Direct Download: easiest and slowest.  This method tells SAP to attempt to stick data in the client-side folder specified in "Local directory." Try this first.
    2) Shared folder: This is recommended when you have SAP being hosted on a Windows box. Basically: you set "Working directory on SAP Server" and "Data Services path to the shared directory" to point to the same folder.  SAP uses the "Working directory on SAP Server" to find this folder, and DS uses the other setting. So, for instance, if you were going to use the Shared folder method, you could set "Working directory on SAP Server" to "E:\BODS_Transfer", and, assuming E:\BODS_Transfer was shared-out as "BODS_Transfer", you could set "Data Services path to the shared directory" to
    dev12.somecompany.com\BODS_Transfer .  Then, you'd need to setup all the relevant security, as both SAP and DS need rights to read and write files in this folder.
    3) FTP (this is the method I usually use): SAP writes the "transport files" you're after (i.e., the data) in the folder specified in "Working directory on SAP Server". Then, you need to establish ftp connectivity to that folder from the DS job server's perspective, which you do by entering the ftp host name and the path to that folder in "FTP host name" and "FTP relative path to the SAP working directory".  In my opinion, the "relative" business is a little confusing, and I just typically enter the full ftp path, beginning the path w/ a forward slash, like "/usr/sap/tmp/BOBJ" or something like that.  You also need to obtain a separate username and password for the ftp connectivity. Note that this name and password has NOTHING to do with the SAP username and password; you're just setting-up DS to act as an ftp client. I strongly encourage you to test ftp connectivity by using a regular ftp client from the DS job server and attempt to connect to your ftp host using the username and password you were given, and attempting to fetch some sample test file. If you can't do this, manually, then DS won't be able to do it, either.
    Best wishes,
    Jeff Prenevost

    Hi Neetu,
    Do you wish that at all customer site all concern involved in implemtation do the same work ?
    I believe ERP is meant for single entry system, and it should be true for implementation also, why to invest man hours for the same task ?
    I expect it standard reports should be released by SAP, so that speed of implementation improve, we have more nos. of satisfied customers.
    customised reports is all together different and it is understood that it is needed to be developed after study the exact requirement.

  • Re-use of article numbers in SAP Retail - consequences for SAP BI ?

    Hello experts,
    I´ve got another task concerning SAP BI 7.0 and Retail ECC 6.00. We are confronted with the following situation: The InfoObject 0MATERIAL is used for SAP Retail Article. 0MATERIAL has been extended with some specific attributes, but beside from this it´s still a standard Business Content object (lenght 18 characters etc.). We are loading data on a daily basis.
    Now for the future there´s the intention to re-use already existing article numbers for different articles (!). E.g. article 012345678910111213 is now a bath towel, but somewhere in the future it changes into a computer or something else.
    From my understanding, we cannot delete the "old" articles in SAP BI as long as they are used in any transactional data. We also cannot change the article text, because 0MATERIAL is not time-dependent. I know that we can make the texts time-dependent (valid from - valid to), but in this case the users have to know when the last change of every specific article has taken place - and this can´t be guaranteed. Beside from this, I can´t see a solution for the reporting on articles because they cannot be compared.
    So - has anybody of you been confrontated with a similar situation and has been solved this problem ?
    Thank you very much.
    Regards,
    Alexander

  • Crystal Report doesn't prompt for SAP credentials / errors out on refresh

    2 Environments tested with same results:
    <p>
    BOE XI 3.1 SP2 & BOE XI 3.1 SP2 FP2.5<br>
    SAP Intg Kit on mirrored SP/FP levels in each environment.
    <p>
    We've been successfully creating Crystal Reports against BEx queries in BW for months now as well as ECC master data.  We've also built universes and have WebI reports actively working against similar BEx queries in the same.  However, we're getting some curious behavior when we refresh the Crystal Reports against BEx queries in BW.  Verified all necessary transports and authorizations have been provided for both authoring, as well as refreshing/viewing on demand, etc.
    <p>
    We've setup all the Crystal Reports we're testing to:
    <p>
    a) Use custom database logon information specified here.<br>
    b) Specify a custom driver, leveraging the crdb_bwmdx driver<br>
    c) Prompt the user for database login
    <p>
    We have not enabled SNC as of yet.
    <p>
    1) When we refresh a WebI report hitting a BEx query with security applied, it doesn't prompt for the credentials, but we confirmed through tracing on the SAP side that if the user hits a paramater it has access to, the data comes through and when we hit a paramater they do not have access to, we can clearly see SAP reject it and it spits out a logical error on the BO side in InfoView and in the WebI logs on the BO server.
    <p>
    2) When we refresh a Crystal Report hitting ECC data, we are prompted for the SAP credentials and everything works as expected
    <p>
    However:
    <p>
    3) When we refresh a Crystal Report hitting a BEx query in BW, we are not promtped for SAP credentials.  We immediately get the "LOV" prompts.  Now, if we use a test user in SAP that has NO SECURITY restrictions at all and open access to the query, the data comes through.  However, as soon as any security is applied to the query level, even if it is SAP ALL, we cannot retrieve the data.  Tracing is also strange, as we can see on the SAP side it buffer the selected paramaters, but unlike with the WebI reports, it never shows it reaching the point where it checks each paramater against what the role has access to.  An error is then spit back.  We run the same queries with the same users within SAP and get normal behavior.  It's as though as soon as we apply security to the query the mdx driver doesn't like it.  Dependant on the type of InfoView viewer we use, the errors we consistently get on the BO side are:
    <p>
    Interactive Viewer: "Error in File %reportname%: Encapsulating Page Failed"<br>
    Java Viewer:  "Error in File %reportname%: Database Connection Error"
    <p>
    Nothing glaring in the event logs on the BO servers or in the Crystal logs that I can see, however just because it isn't spitting a specific error in the crystal logs doesn't mean I'm not missing something because I don't know what to look for behavior wise. To reduce the liklihood that it has to do with the way the report was built, we've tried against the same query by building a report using standard methods, as well as the SAP Toolbar using a very plain jane report.  Same behavior.
    <p>
    Thoughts?

  • New patches for SAP GUI 6.40 and the Screenreader Extension

    Hi,
    patch 10 for SAP GUI 6.40 and version 8 of the screenreader extension have been published on service.sap.com and ftp.sap.com.
    Best regards,
    Christian

    Hi John,
    short update: I talked to the service market place team, and unfortunately the software corner is not a standard SMP site, so the nice features you know from other pages are not available, and won't be in the near future.
    I will post news about new patches here, but as mentioned this is not part of the official workflow and may not always happen, for example when I'm on vacation

  • Change future periods for Fiscal year variant-OB29

    Hi experts,
    We are using 4-4-5 rule, Fiscal year variant is M1, Future Periods for FY variant M1 is not maintained correctly.  Our year end is on 6/25/2011 but in our variant M1 it is defined as 7/2/2011 and periods following that are defined incorrectly.
    Company - US (4-4-5 rule)
    FY variant - M1
    Period - P12/2011 and following periods are not defined correctly
    1.     There are risks involved if you change the fiscal year in Live SAP system.  What is the risks for changing future periods - 2 months from now.
    2.     Posting are not carried out for the periods we are changing.  We need to check plan data if any
    3.     Impact on other modules, organization structure, master data, transaction data
    4.     How intense the testing needs to be.
    Any help will be appreciated and point will be assigned.
    Thanks
    Monica

    Hello,
    If you change the Fiscal year period in the live system the following problems may come as per my understanding.
    For Costing Module Planning would have already been carried our at the start of the year,
    similarly for CS, PP and PS modules if they are implemented in your company the planning data will be effected.
    If there is any Budjet posted even you have to consider how to change  the budget and reaccolation

  • OpenDocument URL for SAP BW query

    Hi,
    We have built universe on top of SAP BI query and created the variable for Fiscal Year. When I run any WebI report created from the same Universe it automaticaly pops up the window to pass the parameter for Fiscal Year.
    I have created two reports one Parent and other one is child. For the child report I am passing the Fiscal Period value as Period 05 2010. When I click on Parent report link to show child report it shows me the MDX error instead of report. (The report works fine without link)
    Prompt Name: Fiscal Year
    Values: Example Period 04 2010,Period 05 2010, Period 06 2010 etc

  • FICO for SAP HANA

    Hello,
    I've reading a lot of documentation from SAP about the new SAP HANA. But i can't yet find the difference between SAP FICO in no-HANA Systems and Smart Finance and Simple Finance in SAP HANA sytem's.
    As far as i understood, if i migrate my FICO from no-HANA to HANA system, i would have, obligatorily, the New GL functionality and the New Asset Accounting.
    But i have two question, if anyone could assist it would be of great help:
    1. By simply migrating data would i imediatly benefit of the new architectural design? (column oriented, in-memory, total tables and index tables transformed to views such as all BSI* and BSA*) or do I need to instal an add-on (Simple Finance or Smart Finance)??
    2. I recently entered a SAP HANA machine from one of our clients, and BSIS, for example, was not a view as was expected. Was there something missing, some sort of activation?
    Thank you very much.
    Best Regards,
    Nuno Anjos

    Please read the release notes in this link SAP Simple Finance Add-On for SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA – SAP Help Portal Page to understand what's new in SAP FICO as compared to the earlier versions.
    Regarding your questions above, here are my thoughts:
    1. You need to install the add-on first (a software update) and then perform the database migration.
    2. Once you install the financial add-on for Suite on HANA (SAP Simple Finance Add-On for SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA), BSIS should appear as a DDL SQL View in SE11.
