Future iPad improvements

I own an iPad 2 and love it, feeding it with new apps on a regular basis. However it does have obvious shortcomings and I'm seriously thinking of buying another tablet that has features which are missing.
Keyboard
I'll start with the the most common failing, which is the keyboard. a positive feature of the onscreen keyboard is the large size of the keys which is great for speed typing. I type faster on my iPad than any other device but only if I'm only typing text and not using complex punctuation. To type a number  have to press a toggle key that converts the whole keyboard. To correct a word back from my current cursor position I hold my finger down and wait for a magnifying glass to appear. Too slow and far to clumsy.
One only has to look at the Thinkbook app to see how Apple should have applied a proper text editing set of features. With regard to the numbers, these should appear as a row above the current keyboard and there can be a toggle key to activate and deactivate it.
To summarise - shortcomings of keyboard - number keys and text editing controls.
2. iTunes - File Transfer
Here is a major problem and concern. Plug in you iDevice and iTunes automatically loads up and syncs, downloads apps purchased but not downloaded, check for new updates, etc. This is a obstructive process if all you're wanting to do is copy files across.
When I plug my device in a pop up should appear with two or three buttons -
File Transfer
iTunes
File Transfer followed by iTunes
One can be in an extreme hurry when needing to copy files and so the default iTunes setup is a barrier to using this device quickly.
3.  Common Folders
This may be the craziest thing about iDevices. If I want to copy a PDF to the PDFReader app, I load up iTunes and add the files under the Apps menu. If I want to view the same files in iBooks or another PDF Reader I need to copy the files again to those apps. This means the files appear several times on my single device, and they are cut off from one another. In PDFReader I cannot see what other PDF files there may be on my iDevice, nor can I load them up without connecting to a Mac or PC and copying them over.
There should be a common file folder structure where common files are stored and can be accessed by multiple applications. I can't believe this does not exist already and can't understand why there is no option for this. From the root folder there should be PDF, JPG, PNG, GIF, DOC, KEYNOTE, PAGES, NUMBERS, PPT, and other folders. Apps should be able to access the files they need from these common folders.
4. Ports / Hub
It's very understandable why Apple chooses to continually omit ports from their iDevices. For years the weight, thickness and appealing look of the devices have pleased the consumer and has been a correct choice as people don't want to carry around bricks. IMO it's important for Apple to continue this policy. However Apple does need to design a hub which can be plugged in and has all the necessary elements in one package. This would be a HDMI, VGA, USB 3, micro USB, mini display ports, micro, mini and normal SD, CF card slots all in one hub unit, together with a power connector which is magsafe.
Buying separate add-ons is frustrating and costly and there is nothing more frightening than arriving to present a talk and panicking because you may have forgotten a connector.
Alternately Apple can release a Connectivity iPad which has all the connectors, slots and ports one needs already built-in. I would favour buying a seperate all in one hub, but there may be a market for a connectivity tablet.
Above is listed improvements that need to be made pronto by Apple if they are to completely dominate the market. If they're happy with less of a market share then their current course is fine, but I will shortly be carrying around another tablet. My wish is for a better iPad though.

Steve Jobs wants Apple products to be the best not just to have market share.
This means listening to their users.
With regard to the other tablet makers, they really do have a branding problem. When I say iPad everyone knows what I'm talking about. If I say Iconia or Transformer I have to explain. They are in a deadend - not sure how they are going to get out of this dilemma,

    For what purpose? I don't miss having one. The Camera Connection Kit is available for importing photos from SD cards. I like the clean look of not having loads of openings in the case.

  • Future iPad Owner Questions!

    Hey everyone! I had a few questions about the iPad.
    Do you personally think it would be worth at least $500? I really want it, but I don't know if I should go ahead and get it, or buy a laptop for around the same price.
    Secondly, how do iPhone apps appear on the iPad?
    Thanks, guys!

    Hi Nick,
    If you do a search, upper right corner, you will get a lot of threads similar to yours. A number of people come on here and ask the other users their views on the iPad.
    First, is it worth $500 entry fee? To some people that might be questionable, but it depends a lot on how you will use it. As a book reader? Kinda pricey. As a device that does books very well, surfs the net, does email, gets the Weather Channel, can do thousands of apps - well worth the price.
    Second, now that the MacBook Air is out, for a couple hundred more, you really have to make a choice based on your planned usage. The MBA is a terrific machine for not much more size and weight. Plus you can put all kinds of software on it. So, iPad vs MBA - go to an Apple Retail store and spend time with both. That is a very personal decision only you can make.
    Third, iPhone apps on the iPad? The iPad gives you the option of native size or 2x size, plus many of the apps are available in iPad native mode also. There are so many apps, you are sure to find something that fits your needs.
    Hope this helps...but go to an Apple store and spend time with it.

  • Ideas for future iTunes improvements

    Pardon me if some of these points are already covered, in which case I would appreciate links to solutions.
    1) The iTunes App Store could really use some fine-tuning. The categories are occasionally so broad that fine-tuning searches is difficult. For instance, "Music" is waaaayyyyy too broad not to be broken down into sub-categories, especially given that Mac and Apple are so deeply engrained in the general arts industry. I suggest:
    - Notation (displaying, composing, writing of sheet music);
    - Performance (instruments to play);
    - Recording (obvious);
    - Listening (managing audio files)...
    ...for starters, with option to apply more than one of these to an app at a time. BTW, I'm sure that experts using other types of apps could make similar statements.
    2) I swear I once found a pull-down menu containing "Previous Apps of the Week," but I can't find it anymore. Well, anyway, it's a good idea, more so if you don't save or memorize all your E-mail newsletters.
    3) In the left sidebar where you see the list of in-app purchase upgrades, it's really annoying not to be able to see the whole title of the upgrade. How about a mouse-over pop-up?
    BTW, I normally use iTunes in full-screen at 1920 x 1080, and would appreciate scalable windows within iTunes for in-app file repositories.

    Useful info. I never would have seen that there.
    I would like to see more instruments (like guitar models), or saved settings. What would be great is if GB could somehow help duplicate settings of an existing track, or offer some idea of how to get there. All the instruments in Magic GB are real instruments (or saved as such) and you can't just delete the track and start playing.
    If not in the app, then here would be a good place to store settings with sound files so that people don't have to reinvent the wheel every time they need a new instrument. For example, let's say I want a rockabilly or jazz guitar sound. It would be nice to have a preset configuration with all the settings optimized. For each guitar type (as an example) people could post tricks they have found.

  • IPad crashes regularly

    After updating OS, iPad crashes regularly. What can I do?

    If your iPhone, iPod or iPad, or even just an app, is freezing or crashing regularly, you may review your crash logs to diagnose any reportable issues. Crash logs contain information about what the iPad and its apps were doing just prior to crashing.
    To find a crash log file, sync your iPhone, iPod or iPad first, then locate the appropriate log files using the path for your OS shown below. An app's log file’s name should start with the app’s name, for example.
    Mac OS X
    ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<your iDevice’s name>/
    Windows XP
    C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter\<your iDevice’s name>\
    Windows Vista
    C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\<your iDevice’s name>\
    Usually, an iDevice user chooses to allow the reporting of crashes to Apple, Inc. automatically, this being a choice when initially setting up your device. Each time a sync is made, the crash logs get reported. So, Apple has a pretty good idea who's chashing when and where, even why, already. If they acknowledged every crash of an iDevice individually, each and every email to you would have to be redundant to what you've just experienced for yourself. Rest assured, Apple learns a lot from the gross collection of crash reports.
    I've just taken a look at my orginal iPad's crash log which shows some 1,500 files, with at least 1,000 of the crashes related to the iPad's low memory. I sense that your review of your own iPad crash reports would pretty much mirror mine.
    This is a dilemma, for sure. First, the iPad is really just an original proof-of-concept device. It has been designed with many factors in mind, one being product segmentation. Apple doesn't want the iPad to cannibalize the MacBooks too quickly so there must be some limitations built into the iPad to prevent unwanted occurrences. After all, the MacBooks make up 75% of Apple's business these days. Balancing the MacBooks and the iPads amounts to a dangerous business and the consequences of wrong decisions can become catastrophic.
    The amount of memory in the iPad is obviously limited, purposely. The Daily Newspaper demonstrated this fact early on. Today, Apple is pushing greater resolutions requiring bigger files for HD stuff and app developers are assuming, probably, that they can eventually force Apple to increase memory sizes in the iPads. We users expect the Pulse app, for example, to function without flaws but, of course, this app interacts directly with the internet where sites have files in sizes the iPad cannot easily handle. It's a programmer's nightmare, balancing memory requirements.
    Apple's competitors know all about these common crashes, too. Watch the tablets appear with greater amounts of memory offered, if only to make a manufacturer's products look technically superior to Apple's. However, Apple is famous for saying "NO!" to a lot of technology for sound reasons. But, future iPads are likely to include increased memory which means that our original iPads will quickly become out-of-date since content providers seem to be assuming that the iPad will someday replace the notebook computer.
    Apple may not have anticipated the early enterprise adoption of the iPad but that adoption is becoming rampant and the demand to stop all this crashing will grow more loud quickly. Apple knows all about this issue and we might only wait for both software and hardware improvements. Content providers may hold the most immediate solution, though, by showing more discipline with their creations.

  • Ipad 2 keeps freezing - hardware problem?

    I have an iPad 2  (Model MC979LL/A) running IOS Version 7.11 (11D201) and the screen keeps freezing.
    I have pretty much exhausted all the good advice regarding hard resets with the two buttons, resetting from settings, and I have used iTunes to do multiple restores both automatically and manually (with & without Recovery Mode) from the .ipsw download  for Version 7.11. No matter what I do, the screen will freeze within 2 minutes, if not sooner.
    Is there a likely hardware issue that might be the cause of all this? The battery seems to keep it's charge. Because it freezes I haven't been able to really use it, so the battery is in the 98% to 100% range. When it freezes, the screen doesn't go black. It just freezes wherever it is, and buttons are unresponsive.
    Is it possible that the Versions 7 and above have  put a strain on some component that now causes a freeze up, or what component would be likely to cause something like this over time?  Any techs out there that might have a likely guess?
    I don't think it's a software issue, but I could be wrong. Nothing on the iPad is important, and it was given to me by someone that was having the same problems, so I'm not adverse to taking it apart. Maybe I'll get lucky.  If I "brick it", no loss.
    Thanks
    Gary

    Since it appeared to be a hardware issue, I figured I would take a chance and open the iPad up.
    Upon opening, I saw two similar connectors, one for the battery and one for the lcd screen.
    I disconnected them, cleaned them, and reseated them, figuring it might make a difference. But it didn't.
    After putting everything back together, the ipad still froze exactly like before after 2 minutes. At least
    I didn't make it worse!
    So I started to think that this screen freezing problem seems to have gotten worse since the seasonal
    change in weather has gotten progressively warmer here in Pennsylvania  from February to June, and that
    it would be interesting to put the iPad in the freezer for 15 minutes and see if cooling the iPad improves it's
    performance.
    It did! After 15 minutes in my freezer, the iPad was able to respond properly for 26 minutes before the screen "froze".
    Is this because there is a component that is heating up inside, and cooling the iPad slows down that process,
    OR
    is the touchscreen more capable of "distinguishing" my warm fingers when the iPad is generally cooler?
    All thoughts welcome.

  • From iPad 3 to iPad Mini?

    hi,
    i just got rid of my iPad 3. i'm planning to get an iPad Mini when the new genartion is available.
    i backed up my iPad 3 to iCloud. i'd like to have my (future) iPad Mini set up exactly as my iPad 3.
    is it possible?
    if somebody has any idea or experience with that, please let me know. thanks.

    @Axeman1020 and @mende1: thank you very much for your help.
    glad to know this is possible.

  • IPad Display Issue

    Supposing that a future iPad has a bigger display than current iPad 2, will there be any compatibility problems with the apps? Will the image be still perfect as it is now?

    It will probably work in the same way the iPhone screen resolution quadrupled in iPhone 4. Text will automatically look cleaner. Apps with high-res bitmaps will look great. Those not yet converted to support the higher resolution screen will still work fine as iOS will automatically scale the low-res bitmaps so they display correctly on the hi-res screen.

    Sorry to hear that, having things stolen is terrible.
    If you haven't done so you may want to talk to Apple support as serial numbers will presumably be identified when a device connects to iTunes, so they may have a way to track these things beyond MobileMe.

  • Improving performance in a merge between local and remote query

    If you try to merge two queries, one local (e.g. table in Excel) and one remote (table in SQL Server), the entire remote table is loaded in memory in order to apply the NestedJoin condition. This could be very slow. In my case, the goal is to import only
    those rows that have a product name listed in a local Excel table.
    I used the SelectRows by using the list of values of the local query (having only one column) in order to apply an "IN ('value1', 'value2', ...)" condition in the SQL statement generated by Power Query (see examples below).
    Questions:
    Is there another way to do that in "M"?
    Is there a way to build such a query (filter a table by using values obtained in another query) by using the user interface?
    Is this a scenario that could be better optimized in the future by improving query folding made by Power Query?
    Thanks for the feedback!
    Local Query
    let
        LocalQuery = Excel.CurrentWorkbook(){[Name="LocalTable"]}[Content]
    in
        LocalQuery
    Remote Query
    let
        Source = Sql.Databases("servername"),
        Database = Source{[Name="databasename"]}[Data],
        RemoteQuery = OasisDataMart{[Schema="schemaname",Item="tablename"]}[Data]
    in
        RemoteQuery
    Merge Query (from Power Query user interface)
    let
        Merge = Table.NestedJoin(LocalQuery,{"ProductName"},RemoteQuery,{"ProductName"},"NewColumn",JoinKind.Inner),
        #"Expand NewColumn" = Table.ExpandTableColumn(Merge, "NewColumn", {"Description", "Price"}, {"NewColumn.Description", "NewColumn.Price"})
    in
        #"Expand NewColumn"
    Alternative merge approach (editing M - is it possible in user interface?)
    let
        #"Filtered Rows" = Table.SelectRows(RemoteQuery, each List.Contains ( Table.ToList(LocalQuery), [ProductName] ))
    in
        #"Filtered Rows"

    Bingo! You've find a serious performance issue!
    The very same result can be produced in a fast or slow way.
    Slow technique: do the RemoveColumns before the SelectRows (maybe you don't have to apply any transformations to the table you want to filter before the SelectRows - I haven't tested this):
    let
        Source = Sql.Databases(".\k12"),
        AdventureWorksDW2012 = Source{[Name="AdventureWorksDW2012"]}[Data],
        dbo_FactInternetSales = AdventureWorksDW2012{[Schema="dbo",Item="FactInternetSales"]}[Data],
        #"Removed Columns" = Table.RemoveColumns(dbo_FactInternetSales,{"SalesOrderLineNumber", "RevisionNumber", "OrderQuantity", "UnitPrice", "ExtendedAmount", "UnitPriceDiscountPct", "DiscountAmount", "ProductStandardCost", "TotalProductCost",
    "SalesAmount", "TaxAmt", "Freight", "CarrierTrackingNumber", "CustomerPONumber", "OrderDate", "DueDate", "ShipDate", "DimCurrency", "DimCustomer", "DimDate(DueDateKey)", "DimDate(OrderDateKey)", "DimDate(ShipDateKey)", "DimProduct", "DimPromotion", "DimSalesTerritory",
    "FactInternetSalesReason"}),
        #"Filtered Rows" = Table.SelectRows(#"Removed Columns", each List.Contains(Selection[ProductKey],[ProductKey]))
    in
        #"Filtered Rows"
    Fast technique: do the RemoveColumns after the SelectRows
    let
        Source = Sql.Databases(".\k12"),
        AdventureWorksDW2012 = Source{[Name="AdventureWorksDW2012"]}[Data],
        dbo_FactInternetSales = AdventureWorksDW2012{[Schema="dbo",Item="FactInternetSales"]}[Data],
        #"Filtered Rows" = Table.SelectRows(dbo_FactInternetSales, each List.Contains(Selection[ProductKey],[ProductKey])),
        #"Removed Columns" = Table.RemoveColumns(#"Filtered Rows",{"SalesOrderLineNumber", "RevisionNumber", "OrderQuantity", "UnitPrice", "ExtendedAmount", "UnitPriceDiscountPct", "DiscountAmount", "ProductStandardCost", "TotalProductCost",
    "SalesAmount", "TaxAmt", "Freight", "CarrierTrackingNumber", "CustomerPONumber", "OrderDate", "DueDate", "ShipDate", "DimCurrency", "DimCustomer", "DimDate(DueDateKey)", "DimDate(OrderDateKey)", "DimDate(ShipDateKey)", "DimProduct", "DimPromotion", "DimSalesTerritory",
    "FactInternetSalesReason"})
    in
        #"Removed Columns"
    I think that Power Query team should take a look at this.
    Thanks!

  • Apple announces future update for Wi-Fi issues...

    +From Apple's support site+
    Symptoms
    A very small number of iPad users have experienced issues with Wi-Fi connectivity. This article outlines workarounds for these issues. *Apple will also address remaining Wi-Fi connectivity issues with a future iPad software update.*
    Note: For general information on troubleshooting Wi-Fi connections with iPad, refer to this article.
    Products Affected
    iPad
    Resolution
    If you consistently encounter issues connecting to a specific Wi-Fi network, try the following steps to resolve your issue:
    Update Wi-Fi router firmware
    Verify that your Wi-Fi router firmware is up-to-date.
    Note: This is important if your Wi-Fi router supports 802.11n, as it may still be using the draft specification of the 802.11n standard.
    For AirPort Base Stations, refer to this article for information about firmware updates. For third-party Wi- Fi routers, check the manufacturer's website for details on updating your firmware.
    Use WPA or WPA2 wireless security
    Check the wireless security option of your Wi-Fi router. If WEP is being used, try using WPA or WPA2.
    Some Wi-Fi routers using WEP wireless security may cause intermittent disconnects to iPad which requires re-typing a password. Using WPA or WPA2 wireless security on your network will correct this issue.
    Note: WPA and WPA2 encryption protocols are newer, more effective security options for wireless networks than the older WEP protocol.
    Adjust screen brightness
    Check to see if your screen brightness is set to the lowest level by going to Settings > Brightness & Wallpaper. If brightness is at lowest level, increase it by moving the slider to the right and set auto brightness to off.
    Note: Brightness control in the iBooks application can also be used to adjust brightness.
    Renew IP address
    In some larger wireless networks it may be necessary to renew your IP address. Renew your IP address using the following steps:
    Tap Settings > Wi-Fi
    Locate the Wi-Fi network you are currently using and tap
    Tap Renew Lease
    If the issue persists, try turning Wi-Fi to Off and then to On.
    If after attempting the troubleshooting tips provided above you are still having difficulty connecting to a network please contact Apple.

    Marriott, 2 different airports = success, success, success. Your "poor signal strength" is just a symptom of an incompatible network.
    Define "old".
    Any router that was not tested with an iPad before it was sold - all of them. Many of those routers were well made and comply with standards that were not written or finalized when they were sold. Those routers work well with devices such as the iPad that comply to those now-official standards.
    Enlighten me, how is a router "misconfigured"?
    It's been hacked up by every assistant store manager at McDonalds so it can run an array of peer-to-peer and gaming servers, as an example. There are literally an infinite number of ways for routers to be misconfigured.
    You are saying that 20% of iPads are failing to connect and it's the router to blame.
    I have no idea how many iPads fail to connect. If you added all of the replies to the "WiFi failure" threads here on Apple Discussions, it would be 0.2%. I think a more accurate number is somewhere in between. It isn't always the router to blame. Sometimes it is the user.
    While I don't doubt router vagaries and the rube-ness of the general public being contributing factors, I'm certainly not a rube. Even know how to read and understand both my router instruction books.
    But I gather you aren't a field IT support person for DoubleTree, McDonalds, or Starbucks.
    I experienced the same kinds of problems when I first got my iBook and MacBook. Routers are cheap, break frequently, and get replaced on a regular basis. The next time you go back to those places, your iPad will probably work just fine.

  • HDR for iPad - what for?

    Hello all!
    Apple's going to add HDR support for iPad in iOS 4.2. However, I am wondering, what use will it be on the iPad since it has no camera? Or will it be as some sort of a post-processing tool for existing photos?
    Thanks for any advise!

    The HDR demo in the keynote speech with photos to be taken on the iphone. When you select HDR on the camera app, the iphone takes 3 photos. One over, one under and one correctly exposed. The software then "HDR's" the 3 into one HDR photo.
    As the current ipad has no camera, it is unknown by anyone other than Apple if there is a way to import 3 photos and "HDR" them using the 4.2 iOS app. And as stated above, not a clue if future ipad's will have a camera.
    I have a 3rd party HDR app that takes, then combines 2 photos and gives an HDR photo. It's cheap and seems to work fine on my iphone4 with 4.0.2.

  • WVC54GCA future firmware suggestions

    Hello all, feel free to add your own suggestions for future firmware improvements for the WVC54GCA camera.
    AUTOMATIC TIME UPDATE FUNCTION:
    At power-ON the camera presently updates the right time from a web time server.
    This does NOT work after a power failure, which affects the modem as well. The modem takes some time to power up, the camera by then has decided to abandon the time update and defaults to 2005.
    Suggestion: make the WVC54GCA try at least every hour to update its time, or even more frequently.
    Or as an alternative:
    Delay the initial time search by 5 minutes.
    Cheers.

    I'd like to see an increase in the motion detection event legnth.  Support for recording events to a NAS would be a great improvement as well.

  • Will iPad 3 be capable of retina display? Or is an above-1080p resolution just too much to handle?

    If apple pulls this off I'm sure they'll gain more than just me as a future iPad user. There is a steadily-increasing list of iPad-only applications that will boost those sales, but I think that having your own "portable HD tv" would just pull in so many tech heads like magnets. I look forward to the possibility either way.

    To answer the actual question, none of us would know.  If current sales are an indicator of anything, the lack of a true HD Retina display has certainly not thwarted sales.  Apple can't build them fast enough. Personally, I find the screen quite terrific in iPad 2 as it is.  If you think your voice needs to be heard by Apple, you should write them at the following URL.......http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

  • Old Cameras and Future ACR updates

    Quick question: with a future update of ACR, would one expect it to improve the rendering of RAW files from an "old" camera or would it only be likely to improve renderings for new cameras going forward?
    Generally, I guess I'm wondering if when ACR rendering is improved, is it relying upon new profiles from old cameras (seems to be unlikely level of effort required) or upon improved ability to understand the manufacture's RAW files, which would affect the full line of that manufacturers cameras?
    Specifically, I have a 3-4 yo Canon Rebel XT. I'm wondering if future versions/improvements to ACR would improve the ability to read RAW files from this camera.
    Thanks,
    Frank

    There is two parts to understanding RAW. One is the demosaic algorithm. Almost every current camera uses a Bayer mosaic sensor with a simple antialias filter in front. When ACR's algorithm for demoisaicing improves, it improves for ALL cameras, not just the new ones. You'll gte more detail and lower noise automatically. Second part is the mapping of the camera signals to certain colors. To do this the ACR/Lightroom folks shoot testcharts with all these different cameras and generate profiles from these shots. New profiles are added all the time and in 1.4 (ACR 4.4), a lot of new profiles for old cameras were introduced. Even for cameras that are not sold anymore. At some point for sure, they must stop profiling older cameras. You'll still benefit from improvements in the demosiac though.
