Future of Flash/Flex given HTML5 shows strongly

Facebook has chosen HTML5 as the language to develop the new platform. It seems Flash/Flex is losing the war. Any comments?

The one between Flash/Flex and HTML5, or between Adobe/Google and Apple. People are complaining Flex applications use a lot of memories and CPU powers on mobile devices. But I'm not so sure how good HTML5 is.
Can you do a digital Guitar like the one we saw on Google a few days back using Flex? I heard it was done with HTML5.

• The Future of Flash

In light of the recent announcement of continued support and upgrades for Flash, I've been thinking more about the future of Flash in the new HTML 5 oriented climate, with more browsers shunning the use of Flash, particularly on the mobile platforms.
Now, I do think that HTML 5 is a good step forward, and it certainly should replace Flash for video content, especially considering that Flash only really dominated that space because of the lack of better support through HTML in the first place. However, on the other hand I also see Flash as a potential champion of these new technologies, as it has very mature support, and (if we ignore uncertain plugin support), it's still a great platform for games, animations, and cross-platform apps.
The way I see it though is that Flash has essentially two core technologies. The first is ActionScript, which I don't believe would be hard at all (certainly not for Adobe) to repurpose as a language for writing Javascript. In fact, I'm under the impression that ActionScript has essentially been an extension of Javascript anyway, so a lot of these capabilities may already be in place, which means a lot of the ActionScript APIs need not be hard to port at all.
Second is the vector graphics capabilities. Now, I expect these would be a bit more difficult to port into an HTML 5 setting, but with ever improving Javascript performance it seems possible that a set of Flash vector libraries could be created that can run directly in the browser, without requiring a plugin. Combined with the current editor for making it easy to build vector content, I think that such a capability would become very popular.
To me this would seem an ideal future for Flash, as it would position the Flash editor as a great way to develop games and animations for the HTML 5 web, and allow Flash Builder to continue to be used for ever more complex apps drawing on the capabilities of Flash and Flex. After all, Adobe's money comes from the Flash and Flash Builder, rather than the plugins and players. As a result it seems like eliminating these in favour of a set of HTML 5 Flash libraries would be a really great way to allow the wealth of existing content to go forward, and to keep new developers interested, as it would eliminate the uncertainty at the future of Flash.
Forgive me if this has already been discussed at length; I did try a search but couldn't find anything that seemed similar. But while I'm not a Flash fanatic, I think there is a clear, and strong position for Flash in the HTML 5 web, without the need to try and compete.

Why don't you go at the FWA website, you will have a glimpse, just a glimpse, of the irrelevance of your question (I don't mean to be rude here).

• Compiling an existing as3 packag with flex sdk (for a flash/flex/as beginner)

Hi
I am new to flash, flex, mxml, and actionscript (with a strong background in c, python, and scheme and some background in Java, VBA, and Javascript). I have a website for which I would like to develop some simple swf content. Basically, I would like to load esri shp files at runtime (and display a series of them as an animation) using these APIs.
I have read through some flex getting started material, but I have found that there is no better way to learn a framework/language than to look at and modify existing code. Happily, I've found a sample that is both salient to my project and about the right level of complexity.
I have the Flex SDK 3 and have created some simple movies. However, I haven't managed to compile the example as3 source code to a successful swf movie. I'd like to write mxml for layout/structure and as3 for functionality, and compile with mxmlc, period. Most examples I've found use of Flex Builder, Adobe Air plugins, other IDEs, etc and so they aren't very helpful.
Here is a link to the content I'm interested in, and more importantly the as3 source packages (zip or browesable) that I'd like to compile. There are two: ManualCartogramTest.as and USStatesCartogramExample. I can use mxmlc to compile either one sucessfully, but the resulting swf file displays nothing. It seems that I should use the ManualCartogramTest class to create an instance of it, but none of my efforts have worked.
Can anyone help out? How should I generate the swf movie given one of these packages? What key piece am I missing?
Jeff
For completeness, here is another example using the shp/dbf packages (from the creator) that I just can't figure out what to do with.

1. Perhaps this wasn't the right forum.
2. I had to use set -use-network=false to enter "local-with-filesystem" mode. Unfortunately, it took a while before I finally used a flash player that told me the problem instead of silently failing. The linux standalone or linux debugger from adobe was key! Gnash, swfdec, and my firefox plugin hid the problem.

• Ipad 3 supports FLASH/FLEX Apps, web or not

ipad 3 supports FLASH/FLEX Apps, web or not?

Apps, yes. Embedded in a web-page, no.
Specifically, a FLEX application bundled as an iOS app and sold through the App Store or distributed ad hoc using an enterprise license will work just fine.
Embedded FLASH (e.g., in a web-page) requires that the browser have a Flash plug-in. iOS doesn't support browser plug-ins, and Adobe dropped development and support for mobile versions of Flash (iOS and Android) a year ago (and laid off the staff related to it), so there will never be one. For what it's worth, Adobe has made it clear that it's also going to drop support for desktop browser plugins as well in the near future (in part because of the wider array of browsers requiring support, and also because Microsoft is dropping browser plugin support from their Windows 8 Metro browser and from their Windows RT browsers).
Going forward, Adobe presumes everyone will stick with HTML5+JavaScript in browsers and a FLEX will be used for standalone application development. They are already modifying their products to reflect this change.

• Future of Flash Builder

I just read that Adobe will discontinue Flash Catalyst and the Design View in Flash builder ?
Is that TRUE ? Programatically Layout and Design uh?
http://forums.adobe.com/message/4085187#4085187
If so that would be a BIG step backwards

I am a designer/developer - I do use the design view extensively. And yes I am more than worth my salt and more. For me, being able to have immediate visual feedback is absolutely necessary. I don't like coding "blind". I have had the opportunity to work Microsoft Blend - Visual Studio since 2007 - It really is what I hoped flex would be. The best of both worlds. As front-end interface developer designer I could work on the exact same source-code, submitting to SVN on a regular basis together with the software engineers developing the backend and SDK. Blend allowed me controle over the primitive shapes that makes up a component. This allowed extreme customisation and optimisation. The wysiwyg view is an absolute crucial part of the process (e.g. do I want this rectangle to have 5px margins or 4, do the shadow work better with a 10 px falloff or a 8px falloff, do I want pixel snap on or off [whish flash had that] - which does look and work different than the photoshop one so I DO HAVE TO DESIGN in the wysiwyg as well)
Yes sure, I do go through a phase designing in Illustrator and Photoshop, but putting the components together takes time. I do not simply import flat artwork and then wrap them in some appropriate container. I build components up using multiple primitive shapes which gets re-purposed and targeted for various states, subtle animations, color-changes and has to comply to it's parent-component's rescaling capabilities. During that phase I do NOT want to continuously recompile. (although I would sometimes create a separate project just to test a specific component that can only be fully viewed after recompiled).
The excuse of "all good coders don't use the design view anyway" is a cop out. I can understand if Adobe says
1) we did not have the resources to do it decently (like Microsoft Blend)
2) we simply do not put the resources in to hire clever enough developers to create a decent tool
But a statement like it's preferable to work only blindly in code is simply wrong and naive of the state of art of dev. tools. Maybe for a dos-like interface or win-32 forms style interface only using stock-standard layout and components.
The biggest advantage of Microsoft Blend is being able to have split view open - I do this with Flashbuilder as well although it is slower and more buggy than Blend - I would write the markup and see updates realtime, switch over to Visual Studio that has the project open in the background for some serious code-completion capabilities - then miss my wysiwyg view - and switch rigth back to Blend.
Why am I using flash-builder/flex - if it was not for the fact that Microsofts wpf-framework only works fully on Win-OS or a subset of it as a silverlight plugin on fewer platforms than flash - I would have used Microsoft. The reason using flash is because it can be deployed on so many platforms - consistently (not like the html4 and now 5 chaos) - It has powerful interactive and multimedia capabilities.
My HTML works exactly the same way - for certain core complex components I will code and have a wysiwyg open as well for better navigation, more inuitive decision making and less time spend going backwards and forwards between compiling/running in the browser - but with the sad state of wysiwyg of dreamweaver unluckily I have to swithc more often (not because I am a more "CLEVER" developer)
Summary - I will use flash/flex only if there is no alternative because of this decision - Flash was supposed to be a creative environment to create highly interactive and creative applications/content for multiple platforms.
Thanks Adobe , I have used Macromedia director since 1993 - You managed to kill that off and now you are messing with flash - It could have been so much more. You simply lack the vision and we are stuck with the limitations, inconsistency, long-development time of HTML5 and a messy array of tools to try and make it usefull.
Whish Microsoft had the vision to make wpf work on all platforms....

• Losing portal context when URL is submitted from flash/flex portlet

Hi, I am losing portal context when URL is submitted from action scripting in Flash/Flex portlet. I have selected the remote webservice portlet to use inline refresh. The jsp page is opening up in complete browser window instead of showing in portlet section.
below is the code snippet i am using.
<mm:mxml>
<mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" width="400" height="200">
<mx:Script>
public function submitToBrowser():void {
var url:String = "formsubmit.jsp";
var u:URLRequest = new URLRequest();
var variables:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
variables.name = fName.text;
u.data = variables;
u.url = url;
u.method = "POST";
navigateToURL(u,"_self");
</mx:Script>
<mx:Form id="myForm" defaultButton="{mySubmitButton}">
<mx:FormItem label="User Name">
<mx:TextInput id="fName" name="fName"/>
</mx:FormItem>
<mx:FormItem label="Password">
<mx:TextInput id="password" displayAsPassword="true"/>
</mx:FormItem>
<mx:FormItem>
<mx:Button label="Submit" id="mySubmitButton"
click="submitToBrowser();"/>
</mx:FormItem>
</mx:Form>
</mx:Application>
</mm:mxml>

inline refresh modifies javascript, not flex. Maybe try an iframe?

• Why does Flash/Flex Builder 4 Premium downgrade to Standard when I install Flash Player Debug?

Why does Flash/Flex Builder 4 Premium downgrade to Standard when I install Flash Player Debug?
I installed a corporate install of Flex/Flash Builder 4 Premium, and verified that it was the Premium version was installed. The Start Page said that Flash Player was needed to display the text, so I installed Flash Player 10 Debug -- first download link from here:
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
When I then started Flex Builder 4, the splash screen showed Premium, but as soon as the Start Page was visible, it showed "FB Adobe Flash Builder 4 Standard" --- Help | About showed Standard, and the splash screen from then on showed Standard.
A Google search showed a work around for this, but it requires a license for Premium, which I don't have because our corporate install has it built-in:
http://bloginblack.de/2010/05/adobe-master-collection-cs5-breaks-flash-builder-4-premium-a nd-how-to-fix-it/
1. Anyone know how to resolve this?
2. Can Adobe fix this?
Thanks!

I had similar problem. I was involved in Flash Builder prerelease program and few months later I installed Adobe CS5 Master Collection. After that I had a same situation. Best thing was, my Flash Builder Beta was Premium version but acted like Standard, and FB from CS5 was Standard but acted like Premium. I removed CS5 and beta version of CS5. used CS5 Cleaning Fix and then reinstalled my apps.
I was lucky that I didn't have many big projects involved in FB beta or CS5 workspaces, I heard some guys had problems with migrated workspace configurations but I don't know what was the problem.

• Open source debugger for Flash, Flex and AIR

As developers at De Monsters we weren’t totally happy
with the current Flash, Flex or AIR debuggers out there. So we
decided to create our own debugger called De MonsterDebugger. Today
we’ve got a great new version that we want to share with the
community for free.
Interface
screenshot
De MonsterDebugger started out as an internal tool that
helped us with the development of different ActionScript 3
projects. The past several months we’ve been working on a new
version of this internal tool. With this new version you can
explore your live application, adjust properties and run methods
all at runtime. You can trace objects of any type (String, Array,
XML or even custom classes) to De MonsterDebugger and it will show
the complete structure of that object in an easy-to-read tree
structure. De MonsterDebugger is made with Adobe Flex and brought
to the desktop with Adobe AIR.
Because De MonsterDebugger isn’t our core business
we’re giving it away for free! All the sourcecode is open
source available under the GNU General Public license.

• Modify Flash CC's HTML5 template?

I am trying to include some other Javascript libraries into code created when converting some old Flash animations to HTML5/JS.
It's simple enough to just open the Flash CC-published .html file and add the necessary statements to the head, but of course, every time you re-publish the Flash CC HTML and JS, it overwrites the added lines when the HTML file is updated.
Unchecking the "Publish HTML" box doesn't help all that much.
Is it possible to modify the "template" that Flash CC uses to output HTML? This would save a lot of tedious cutting and pasting when testing animations.
TIA!

Thanks, Nipun. My basic problem is that I have a fair amount of Flash work that needs to be "converted" so that it will function on iOS devices.
I have been playing around with Flash CC's abilities to pull in existing FLA files, and modify them for HTML5 output. I have found MANY problems with this "workflow," thus far. I am not even convinced that the "conversion" is even useful, given the things that need to be addressed, even down to stuff like confronting a different scheme for frame numbering on the Timeline, etc.
The Edge Animate software is hopelessly crippled by its failure to (automatically) address cross-browser flavors of HTML5 coding, and by its reliance on having to hand-code almost anything that isn't related to the Timeline advancing - i.e., stuff that "jumps around" automatically, as opposed to someting approaching the REAL functionality that we had in Actionscript.
So, I'm still really waiting to see what transpires before I devote any more of my time to learning software that doesn't seem like it's truly addressing the issue of seamless, cross-platform HTML5 animation.

• Future of Flash

I wish to initiate a discussion about the future of Flash. If anyone knows of any relevant discussions that have already been posted please let me know. I found the discussion initiated by
FritzPablo entitled “html5 animation: Flash CC vs. Edge Animate?.” It was helpful but didn’t address my central question, which is how to respond to the decreased popularity of Flash.
Let me explain why this is so important to me. I am a professor of genetics and embryology, not a graphics designer. I learned Flash and used it to develop an extensive series of animated lessons. I submitted these for publication, but publishers are reluctant to invest in a technology that may go the way of Word Star. To investigate the problem I attended the recent Adobe MAX meeting. My conclusion was that Adobe is focused on transitioning from Flash to Edge, not on supporting Flash. Although they have bolstered Edge substantially, it still does not meet my needs. For instance, it does not shape tween, which is critical to 90% of what I do. One speaker suggested that I compose shape tweens with Flash and import them into Edge. That may be an answer but I foresee multiple problems. For instance, would users still need the Flash player to run the animations? I wouldn’t want to devote a year or two to convert my work, if it will become obsolete a year or two thereafter.
So that’s my question, what’s the best strategy for converting and/or salvaging Flash animations. Should we commit to Edge and hope future upgrades to HTML will incorporate advanced
features like shape tweening? Are there programs that will run SWFs without the Flash reader? Are there other programs that meet the need? Any advice that anyone can provide will be
greatly appreciated.

Hi,
In addition to what Ned suggested above, If you prefer to output to HTML format, there exists a new document type HTML5 Canvas with-in Flash Professional CC using which you can publish. You can as well convert your existing AS3 files into Canvas document type using Commands>'Convert to HTML5 Canvas from AS3 document formats' menu.
You can obtain more information at Flash Professional Help | Creating and publishing an HTML5 Canvas document
Also Flash Professional CC is in active development and you can gain more information by attending an upcoming Live Webinar (Flash CC: The Future of Animation). You can register for this webinar by clicking on the display that appears at the bottom right corner of your welcome screen(one that appears as soon as you launch Flash Professional CC)
Thanks!

any1 can help me, thx...

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
