Future of Interactive PDF's and their ability to run on Slate/iPad type devices?

I am sure I am not the only one wondering about this question and am hopeful an Adobe Evangelist can answer these questions.  I love what Adobe has done with indesign CS5 and the ability to combine video, animation and high quality layout content all in one document.  What is currently missing is for the pdf reader to be "touch" aware so that people can scroll through pages like an ebook, which I would think would be fairly easy to do and would give me the complete picture I am looking for.  So...a couple of questions.  I am assuming that if you use the embedded flash features within a pdf document it would require the flash player? Is it possible Adobe could figure out a way to run the flash runtime inside of pdf to get around it?  Unfortunately Apple has decided to be jerks about the whole thing, but the reality is that the iPad is not going away.  Also, if you use Adobe's encoded video format and reference it via html from inside the .pdf, is that also not going to work on the iPad?(not sure if the video player is also driven through flash).  I think it would be a good idea for Adobe to support video formats other than their own anyway for playing in a .pdf (i.e. H.264).  I guess the other alternative would be to be for Adobe toembed HTML5 content into the .pdf instead of flash for the animations and that takes the work off of the designer that way.  Regardless, just wanting to know what the overall direction is as I am anxious to develop rich content using Indesign + interactive .pdf's, and I don't think you can achieve the same level of formatting or multi-media with the epub/ebook format as you can with an interactive .pdf, so any insights as to what Adobe's plans are would be appreciated.  I also don't want to start creating content that is going to be dead soon...
PS: I totally don't have a problem with going with a PC based slate device that runs flash, but the problem is several of my friends already have an iPad and that limits my distribution audience.  As stated earlier, it is very disappointing Apple has decided to be so restrictive and proprietary about this, but I can't believe there is not some smart Adobe person in there that can't find a technical way around Apple's walls.   Any insights would be appreciated.

I have also been trying to implement audio into a PDF file.  I am working on a presentation that will be presented to a client on an IPAD and then they will have the opportunity to keep the IPAD and some additional reference materials that are uploaded to GoodReader (awesome app).  I developed the presentation in Power Point and converted to a PDF.  I was happy to see that GoodReader recognizes the hyperlinks between the slides (pages) however I would like to give the end user the option to hear narration or an audio blurp about what is going on on each page.
Thought about Keynote for the presentation but it doesn't support narration.  Thought about trying to link directly to a web based audio file, that doesn't work.  Thought about trying to link to an ITunes file, that doesn't work.  This type of functionality is GREATLY needed.  I wish that Acrobat had the option to embed an Audio file that didn't turn into flash (maybe javascript?), that would be an ideal solution.
If anybody finds a way to do this, I would really appreciate it!

  • Interactive PDFs: Video and Type?

    Hi,
I'm trying to create an interactive PDF where the first page has an animation and a title. In Indesign CS5.5, I've placed a .mov (also tried.flv) in the background, behind some live type. What I was hoping is that it would export just like that, with the video playing as the background image, and crisp vector type on top. In the preview shown in the Media panel it looks exactly like that, but when I export the PDF, the video jumps to the front and covers everything else up.
Is there a solution to this problem?!
I'd be so grateful if anyone can help, thanks!
    Tom

Here's the problem: The Media panel and the Preview panel are showing you a SWF-based preview. However, you're aiming for PDF output. PDF puts multimedia on top. I don't know of a workaround for that.
In InDesign CS6, they correctly renamed the Preview panel the SWF Preview panel.

  • Help needed with saving interactive PDF (Video and Youtube in InDesign)

Designing a brochure in Indesign CS6 I have placed small MP4 video file into indesign, when I save the file as an interactive pdf the video files dont show up in preview on mac, just a blank white space. the window does show in adobe reader but im having problems with the play function not being able to pause that. Would like the file to be a pdf so can share across a few devices and platforms.
Have also tried a workaround which hyperlinks an screencaption but the link appears broken when i click the image, is this something to do with you tube video being private?

    Moved to InDesign forum.
When you export you will note that you export an Adobe PDF. There's a reason for that.
Mac Preview is fine for a plain vanilla PDF but it ends there.

  • Interactive PDF buttons and default outlines

I'm trying to make a straight forward ebook in Indesign cs5.5 for a touch screen, consisting of a series of images. The only functionality it needs to have for now is browsing up and down.
I made two big rectangular buttons with opacity set to 0%, 1/3 of the from the right of the screen = next, 1/3 from the left of the screen = previous page.
All works, but now there's this ugly default dashed line that pops up every time you tap one of the buttons. I can't find anything on this topic, but surely there must be a way to hide this? It's silly to have this dotted line popping by up by default when you can have full control over rollover states.
    Any suggestions?

Here a screenshot from my screen when opening it in a browser or Acrobat X on a Windows machine.
When I open it in Safari in OSX10.4, Adobe Reader 5, I see the same rectangle lit up in transparant grey.
For now I made a flash presentation, which only shows button states exactly as designed, as it should! But I still love to know a solution for pdf, as I'd like to use the flexibility of it in coming projects.

  • Interactive PDF/Map

    Hey folks,
I realize this is as much a Microsoft and computer settings issue as anything else....but if I have a novice user
who I send an interactive PDF with a map inserted...how likely is that person going to be to click through security warnings 5 - 10 times
to finally see the map?  The link below is an example on an XP machine.  Windows 7 only exacerbates the problem.  While one can click
the "remember this action" button, many novice users may not notice it, grow frustrated, etc.
Might there be a way to minimize this issue?

If it's not possible, it isn't, but can you walk me through why not -- if the answer is simple? As I understand it, to make an image map in Photoshop you begin with an image, then draw areas, assign URLs to the areas, then export the image and HMTL code. Maybe I've got that wrong but this is what I think the process is. Now, I have a PDF that was created from a file in InDesign. In InDesign, I assigned URLs to photos, to blocks of text and to logos. Each one of these is a AREA. I exported the file as an interactive PDF and it works fine. Hover over the photos or the text and the cursor changes to a hand and if I click, I'm taken to the appropriate web page. Now if the URLs are assigned to areas in the PDF, why is it so difficult for a program to "read" those PDF areas and their associated URLs and convert them to Photoshop type silces with the same associated URLs? Again I'm not a programmer so I guess it's not that simple but it SEEMS and though it would be easier even that converting -- for example -- a PDF to a Word doc, or converting a InDesign doc to a Quark doc, software for which purpose both are readily available.

  • Buttons don't work: InDesign CS& interactive PDF

Hi, i'm creating an interactive PDF book in InDesign CS6, it's a simple plain text + images book
I added some buttons on the first page that work as a table of contents (each button redirects you to a diferent page).
And one at the bottom of the master page I'm using (so you can see it on every page of the document) that sends you back to that table of contents.
They are simple objects converted to buttons, with the option "go to destination" active and with a certain Hyperlink Destination asigned each.
The first time I exported the document they all worked perfectly, but then after I made some minor changes to the document and exported it again, they didn't work. The curious thing is that I have 2 more buttons at both sides of the page that have the "Go to next/previous page" that ARE working. So my guess is that it has something to do with the Destination option or the destinations themselves.
Here I explain how I did it:
    1. Went to the page I wanted the destination.
    2. Click on the Hyperlinks menu then "New Hyperlink Destination"
    3. Added its name and clicked OK.
    - Did the same with every page I wanted in my index -
    4. Went to the page designed to the table of contents.
    5. Created a text box with the Type Tool.
    6. Converted it to a button in the Buttons and Forms panel.
    7. Added a "Go to Destination" action to it.
    8. Selected its respective Hyperlink Destination i made before.
    - Did the same with every other button of the table of contents and that one at the bottom of the page that takes you to it -
    9. Exported the document as an (Interactive) PDF.
And that's it. The 2 buttons that have the "Go to Next/Previous page" action work, but the ones that have the "Go to Destination" action don't. There are no layers, there are no other objects stacking over them nor behind, just the buttons against the background.
I tried with Bookmarks instead of Hyperlink Destinations, but didn't work.
I tried making them Hyperlinks directly with the Right Click menu then, Interactive option, then "New Hyperlink" and selecting the page I wanted them to go, but hey didn't work either.
And to make a classic table of contents from the Layout menu, wouldn't make much difference because I still have that one button that takes you to that page where I have my table of contents, and it will be still not working.
Can anyone help me? Has anyone had the same problem?
    Thank you!

Exactly the same thing I am experiencing. Can someone please help?

  • Is there a plug-in for Indesign Interactive PDF buttons which simulates the same control as Acrobat?

I want to know if there is a third party out there making plug-ins for Indesign CS6 specifically for interactive PDF buttons and forms which allows for better control over text boxes.... ie. date formatting, 1-10 characters per text boxes, etc.

Not that I've heard of. You'll have to tweak those features in Acrobat Pro.

  • How to display Table in Interactive PDF with WD-ABAP

    hi All,
I have to display a tablewith 4 rows in Interactive PDF form, and i am using WD ABAP.
These are the steps i have followed.
    1. I have created a table line for the required table
    2. Dragged the table line from data view to body page.
    3. Wrapped the table in subform ,and made it to type "Flowable".
    4. Unchecked the check box saying repeat row for each data item for table and for the header row.
Now when i preview it works fine and display 4 rows, but when the same PDF is called through Web Dynpro component, it shows an error that related to SOM Expression of that line type.
Any idea how to get rid of this error..??
If somebody could also let me know if the steps followed to display the table are correct...??
    All replies will be appreciated.

Solved it myself, changes the cardinality to 1:N of the context node

  • Exporting Interactive PDF with MP4 File

I am trying to export a file from InDesign for work.  We send out daily email with PDFs from InDesign and would like to include from training videos.  How can we include the MP4 format video so we can watch them in the PDF we send out.  I've read through the Interactive PDF guides and forums.  A still image of the first frame of the video appears, we can't get it to play.
    Thanks!
    Adam

While including an MP4 video is good if you know the recipient is using Acrobat/Reader on a desktop computer, the content may or may not work on a tablet or smartphone. I'd go with Wilhelm's suggestion of providing a link.

  • Exporting Interactive PDF

Been trying to export an Interactive PDF but non of the interactive elements work. I've implemented simple roll-overs for a few images, and when I view it in preview it all works fantastic, however once I export the Interactive PDF non of the interactivity works.
This is the first time i've worked using Interactive PDF's and i'm pulling my hair out trying to troubleshoot this issue without much luck finding any revelant information online.

What version of InDesign? What kind of interactivity are you creating?
Be aware that some forms of interactivity do not work in Interactive PDF. Animations and Object States do not work.
You should be able to do buttons, page transitions, hyperlinks, bookmarks, media (video and audio if you choose the correct format).
There is a workaround for animations and object states: You can export them as a SWF file, then place them into the InDesign file and export PDF.
BTW, there is a lot of information in the InDesign Help file. Start there.

  • Do interactive PDF's work

    Hi,
i have been looking into interactive PDF's and all i seem to find is poor examples which do not really work well.  I am looking into ways to show content for a client, and wanted to see what was out there.
Does anyone have any good experiences with them,  or are they just something that never really took off.
thanks for any of your help

Not sure why that's happening - it's perfectly fine on my computer - and I haven't got the best computer in the world.
    3gb RAM - 2.2ghz processor (no hyperthreading)
It may have to do with your version of Acrobat Pro or if you're using Acrobat Reader it might be slower depending on your version.
I don't know if this blog post answers any of your queries?
    http://www.alexhogrefe.com/blog/2012/11/24/indesign-why-use-it.html
But for your Interactive PDF presentations - I'd suggest also including a link to download the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
It might take some experiment with InDesign and Interactive PDF and it may not do exactly what you want.
But you won't know that until start the project.
And then fire questions that way.

  • Create and Export 'clickable' interactive PDF?

    Hello,
I'm working on a product brochure which reqires the ability to change out images inside the PDF with a click of a button.
It's identical to what Apple use on their website, however I want to create it in AI and export it as a PDF.
Is this possible? Would it only work in Acrobat or would it be compatiable with Preview on the Mac?
The best eample of what I mean is here :https://www.apple.com/ipod-touch/features/
    - Scroll down to the second image where you can change the color of the iPod/
    Thank you

I want to create it in AI and export it as a PDF.  Is this possible?
    Yes. You'll need Acrobat.
    1. Draw the artwork in Illustrator. Put the elements of the artwork which need to change on a dedicated Layer.
    2. Duplicate the Layer. Make the desired changes. Repeat for as many different versions as needed.
    3. Save A Copy...as PDF. Turn on the Create Acrobat Layers... option.
    4. Open in Acrobat Pro.
    5. Create buttons. Set the buttons' Actions to Set Layer Visibility.
Would it only work in Acrobat or would it be compatiable with Preview on the Mac?
Don't know about Preview on Mac OS. It will work in Reader and in the Reader browser plug-in.
    Example:

  • End user have ability to change font style in text field of interactive pdf form?

Does the end user of an interactive pdf form able to change the font style, i.e.: make something bold or underline a word in a text field?
I am making a form with text fields and the end user would like the ability to make something bold or underline it.. I do not see anywhere in acrobat that allows styles to be changed.
I have created the form in Indesign > saved it as an interactive pdf and brought it into Acrobat.

Thank you for the quick response! Do you set this in Indesign before exporting or do you set this in Acrobat? I am in Acrobat 10.1.10 and when I go to properties it doesn't give me  'options' to choose from.
