Future of ppc g5 architecture

I am sure this must be covered somewhere else. How far does apple intend to take the g5 non-intel. tiger can address over a terabyte of memory and I am sure much more processing power than a quad core g5.
Does anyone think it would be possible to switch out the processors as they become available or as apple finished with ibm. in that case the g5 is a technological dead-end. For all their glorified words on the g5 from their website i have heard nothing new. It all sounds like BOHICA to me from apple.

Just think about all the major corporations, schools etc. that had trasitioned from os 9 to os x and then when that transition happend chances are they got knew hardware to update and go along with that transition. I know the company I work for (Warner Books) just a year ago updated the entire creative dept with G5s. And I know they wouldnt upgrade to Intel untill they used up as much with the G5s as possible it wouldnt make sense from a business perspective. I seriously doubt that any 3rd party venders are going to leave the ppc in the dust at least not for some time in the future. Buy the time they do stop writing software for it you will probably be thinking about upgrading anyway. The quad will stay at peak performance for quite some time and though they will be building faster machines wouldnt the quad be sufficiant for your needs?? I wouldnt worry about it. Now is the time to buy them your getting DDR2 memory, PCI-Express, and 4 G5 cores. Might as well get it now and let it last you the 3-4 years then upgrade to intel when the new intel powermacs have been tested and proven.

I had been using Foxfire 3.6.15 with no problem, but Foxfire sent me a message stating that I was using an old version and should update. I downloaded Foxfire 8 but when opened it has a circle lined-out over the Foxfire icon.

  • Adobe flash for Mac

I tried to install the latest version of flash player on my Mac and have gone through the troubleshooting guide already. I uninstalled the old flash player, and i closed everything out, but I still get the error message "Adobe Flash Player cannot be installed. Devices with PowerPC processors are no longer supported. Click below to download the last version of Flash Player for PowerPC." I'm especially confused since the website said it could tell I was using a Mac OS X...

The website uses a javascript to determine the OS and browser in use by every visitor.
As to the issue of not being able to install:
In October of 2004, Apple ended a long relationship with Motorola who had made PowerPC processors and IBM who made the G3 G4 and G5 cores for them. The PPC processors ran too hot in confined spaces and too slow for what Mac had planned. They looked to AMD and Intel to find a new processor developer. AMD while plenty fast and plenty stable is just as hot as the PPC processors were, so Intel became the new processor maker for Macs.
In 2008 Mac decided that they would sunset support for PowerPC machines in twelve months. By August of 2009 all support for the machines and the OS's (10.5.8 I think was the last supported) had ended. EVERYTHING Mac makes now is Intel, be it hardware or software.
It reads like you have a PPC machine which is unfortunately not able to use Flash Player 10, which is built to run on an Intel architecture. You will need to download 9 from a place like oldversion.com.
A word though. You will find increasing difficulty running apps and viewing content geared for the latest versions of Flash Player. I'd guess by the time it gets to 10.5, player 9 won;t be able to access Flash content.
The PPC machines were good and they lasted way longer than their PC counterparts, but their time has passed. Intel Macs are the future and PPC is soon to be a memory of what once was.

  • What is Apple's substtute for Adobe Flash Player on iPad?

What is Apple's substtute for Adobe Flash Player on iPad?

Until Adobe can develop a version of Flash that works for mobile devices that is stable and doesn't hog memory resources or ***** up battery life, there isn't much anyone can do about this!
Android devices claiming to run Flash are having these issues, too. Steve Jobs and Apple simply won't allow Adobe Flash to with their mobile hardware/software with the state of affairs with Flash, now. If Adobe has a breakthrough and can develop a version of Flash or some sort a content providing software that works and plays well with mobile devices and platforms, the situation may change. For the foreseeable future, Flash is going to be absent on current and future Apple mobile devices.
On another note, PPC Macs are obsolete technology that is, at least 6 years old. OS X 10.5 was the last Mac operating system to still support PPC Mac architecture. This OS is , at least, 3 years old. OS X 10.4 Tiger is, at least 5 years old.
You can't expect either Apple or Adobe,or any hardware/software manufacturer/developer, at this time, to keep supporting older technologies. Especially, anything 5 or 6 years old or more. It's just not cost effective or practical.
Technology marches on. There are many of us, probably, still using PPC Macs, including myself. We're all in the same boat.
At some point, we're going to have to play catch up to the latest and greatest to be able to stay current on the grid and to be current with new technologies, hardware, and software.
I do not think this is a rational reason to jump ship on a company who, arguably, makes the best technology hardware/software integrated devices and computers in the world.

  • Mac OSX 10.5.8 Leopard & HP Photosmart 3180

I have a HP photosmart 3180 and recently upgraded to 10.5.8 "still leopard". I recently looked to install this printer again on network, so I went to hp site and downloaded latest driver (marked 10.4, 10.5) downloaded and installed. Hooked printer up and everything seemed to work fine, until I tried to restart. Upon restart the MOUSE FREEZES and the Apple bluetooth app launched looking for my mouse?? The mouse freezes in upper screen. I tried a different usb connection, nothing? I tried to restart again, zapping pram, nothing? starting to get anxious (computer is less than year old & printer is only three years old) unplugged all usb devices and restarted again.....ok everything works again...plugged in printer ok....restart same problem. So now I have narrowed it down to the printer which for all intent and purpose is still brand new, maybe printed about 50 pages in all.
Since I narrowed it down to be an HP issue, I called HP support. First they wanted $35 because my printer is TOO old for phone support, out of warranty. Was given an option to use chat support by operator. I tried Chat support and was told they do not offer chat support for Apple? (I was sent there by their operator that knew I was running Mac OSX) I was then offered email support, still waiting. During my conversation with HP representative I was basically told that they no longer support that model (because it's 3 YEARS OLD!) I could pay and upgrade to another printer. When asked about the HP policy and driver/hardware support for printers more than 3 years old, I was told " since they release so many new printers, they do not offer full support for hardware more than 3 years out."
Have I lost my faith in Apple? NO it just reaffirmed that non-apple products and support are crap.
They will not help you unless you pay another $35....in which case I was told again this is only "best we can do" help and will not guarantee that they can get things to work. Way to stand by your product, HP !!
So, I will never by another HP product again as they refuse to stand by their own hardware past 3 years!, by their own admission. I can use the printer as long as I unplug it when not in use. lol

  • Most reliable Mac Mini Model

Any thoughts on what has been proven to be the most reliable Mini or a particular problem model. Hope to buy a used one soon. I'd prefer a PPC over an Intel just because i'd rather not run my older apps in Roseta. May be that not a real issue but i just don't know for sure. And could care less about running any form of Windows. But if you think the Intel Machines hold up better I'd consider them. But not just because of their superior performance.
Hey thank you for any of your valuable feedback
    PK

I don't think there has proven to be much of a difference in reliability terms between PPC and Intel minis - though even if there had been signs that say the PPC units were more inherently reliable, it's not really a good guide to future behavior since these systems are getting older and older, so an early lower failure rate doesn't do much more than imply that might remain so.
It's also difficult to tell from reports here, since PPC models were in the supply chain for a somewhat shorter period of time, and there has been a wider number of Intel models, each potentially with their own issues.
I really think you'd be best to look at what your specific needs are to determine how to best meet them. Even if history could tell us that one type of machine has a better reliability record than another, how well behaved any individual unit will turn out to be is much more a factor to do with luck and prior treatment.
That said, I have two PPC minis of my own (both running constantly since new) and had no problem with either. I am also responsible for 15 or so minis (all but one Intel models) in various networks I manage, and so far none have proven unreliable. I've been using minis since they first came out in January 2005 (my 1.25 mini is a 'day one' unit).
If you have PPC applications and no plans to upgrade in the foreseeable future, a PPC mini may prove to be the better option, though it must be said that some PPC software will run faster (even with Rosetta) on an Intel model if it has enough RAM.) If you have any need for Classic or pre-OSX software, you will have little option but to go for a PPC unit, since Classic doesn't run on the Intel platform.
However, if you have any reason to think your future needs might grow to include new software, you will almost certainly be better off with an Intel mini (if a Core Duo then preferably with 2Gb RAM, while if a C2D, then 3Gb or even 4).
The only reason I would buy a PPC model by now is if I needed a Mac mini and funds were very tight, or if I was buying to meet an immediate need, with the expectation of replacing the system in the not-too-distant future if my needs were likely to evolve at all.

  • I have a PowerPC G4. Firefox 5 for Yahoo says that I meet the requirements. But I cannot open the Firefox.app on my computer. Why not? Thanks

I was able to download Firefox 5. When I transferred it to my applications folder, it states that I cannot open, because my architecture doesn't support it. Why doesn't it state that when I looked up the minimum requirements? According to that, I should be able to use it.

  • Can't find updates for CS4 version of Acrobat 9.0 PRO

I moved Creative Suite 4 MultiLanguage (ITA) version on a new personal computer equipped with Windows 7 Sp1. I was able to update all applications except Acrobat. For Acrobat I only found  the 9.5.5 update version but it doesn't work (probably is suitable only for 9.3 CS5 version of Acrobat). Does anyone know where I can find other updates file that can solve my problem?

The good news is that Firefox 3.6.24 still supports OSX 10.4 and Macs with the PPC Mac architecture. The bad news is that support for the Firefox 3.6.x series is likely to end in the first quarter of 2012.

  • I cannot override my previous version of Firefox with v4.0. When I try to drag it into applications, I get a message that there is a newer version already there (not true).

I have been following the download instructions. But I never get a prompt to place the file into the Applications folder. So I open the file, drag it to Applications, and get a message that I already have a newer file in Applications. However, this is not true. When I drag the file to the Firefox icon, I am told that can't be done because Firefox is already open.
I have done several other updates, never had this problem before. I have a MacBook.
