Future of Spell Check

Hi. I'm wondering what the future of spell check will be for Pages...Does Pages 2 have anything that allows this program to learn from our mistakes and become more accurate? Will it help us learn how to become better spellers?

David,
I wanted to praise the online help, so I went to http://bit.ly/fm10help and entered »spell check« into the search box.
The first hit gives me the long page with all the spell checking options.
The second hit gives me the »What’s new« page which tells me that Auto spell check is new in FrameMaker 10. The link at the bottom gives me the page I already have seen in hit #1.
Well, before I dig deeper, the wiggly line auto spell checking is a session setting, i.e. you find it in the File > Preferences > General (or similar) dialog. Uncheck the option below the circled options.
Another possibility would be to set the language of the paragraph styles you use to »None«, but I doubt that is the thing you were looking for.

• Use different language and Spell check

Hello, just got an iPad to supplement my two Android phones, and like it so far...
Except for one thing that drives me nuts...
The spell check. I live in Scandinavia, but like to use English as my interface language. This causes major problems, when I write something in Danish.
Is there any way to have English as the interface language, but use another language for spell checking?
Also, is there a way to use two different languages in spellcheck? Its really annoying to have English words pop up as suggestions when I write something in a different language and vice versa...

From a user perspective this is wrong UX and lacks total support for multi-national companies, especially when the (national) keyboard layout differs from the (foreign) keyboard layout that is being forced to use if one wants the spell check to be performed in the foreign languge.
Let's take the following example. My language settings are set to English because I want my interface in English. The used keyboard layout is Flemish (=Dutch) (AZERTY). When writing emails the spell check is performed in Dutch since iOS uses the keyboard related language. This is fine as long as I write emails to people in Belgium which do read and speak Dutch. However when I want to write English emails (and hence would like English spell check) I am forced to switch my keyboard to English (UK). This is not really OK as switching the keyboard messes up the layout I am used to work with (English -> QWERTY).
Essentially, the selected keyboard (and keyboard layout for that matter) shouldn't have any impact on the used language for the spelling check. To be honest I can't remember of any application/OS used so far that applies this logic.
I really do hope that this gets fixed in some way (e.g. by adding the option to select the spelling check language) in a future update of iOS.

• I need language dictionnaries for spell checking/correcting. I have firefox nightly v.27.0a1. Should I keep this version and wait or go back to classic firefox?

The French and Arabic dictionaries seem to be not compatible with firefox nightly. I have the latest version: 27.0a1. Will updates be made in the coming future to fix that?
Many thanks by advance!
A loyal firefox user.

Do you confirm that I should download and use firefox "classic" version instead of nightly to be able to install the French / Arabic dictionary add-ons for spell checking/correcting when writing in the browser?

• How Do I Get Spell Checker to Flag Words with Numbers?

Hi,
I cannot find any articles on this, so sorry if it's already been answered elsewhere.
I sometimes accidentally hit a number key when typing words like "you"--so that it becomes "y9ou". The Firefox built-in spell checker does not flag this as a misspelling.
In other programs there is a check box to allow this or not, but I cannot find one for Firefox. I do not use words with numbers very often, except something like W2, so I would prefer those get flagged instead of ones that are wrong like y9ou or w3ere that I make frequently.
Any help on this?
Thanks!
Don :)

Hi, Again,
Thanks for the info. And for a quick reply. ;-)
I checked my current cop0y of LibreOffice (I replaced OpenOffice.org with it several months ago). LibreOffice uses Hunspell as well. I had not checked the boxes to check words with numbers or all-caps as I had previously done in OpenOffice.org, so for all this time I have been thinking it would flag errors in those when it wasn't. Must have made LOTS of mistakes I didn't catch in that time. ;-(
In LibreOffice, go to Tools => Options => Languages => Writing Aids. You can choose to enable spelling and grammar checking (not sure what the grammar checker oes, since it was already enabled but I have never seen any evidence of it). The below that is a section of checkboxes where you can specify what is and is not flagged by the spell checker. I checked the words with numbers and capital letters choices. So now it will catch all the acronyms I haven't added to the spell checker dictionary.
I was looking for the same sort of choice in Firefox but didn't see it. Perhaps there is an API in Hnnspell the Firefox developers can use to add this choice as a checkbox, the way it is in LibreOffice.
I realize this may be perceived as a low priority, but I would certainly appreciate seeing it in a future update of Firefox. At least making this post helped me get the settings i wanted in my word processor.
Take care and God bless.
Don :)

• How do I restore my toolbar with spell-check,auto-fill, etc.

I have no toolbar. I write a blog and I cannot find spell-check, bold, underlining, etc. There is no auto-fill, etc. Nothing

The Google Toolbar "will not be supported on Firefox 5 and future versions."
The Google Toolbar '''7.1.20110512W''' version does work pretty good in Firefox 5.0 by using the Compatibility Reporter extension. But not every feature works 100%.
Where do you need this spell checker? Please be specific.

• Enable OWA 2010 Spell Check On As Default?

The default setting for the Outlook Web App for Exchange 2010 is off and if users want spell check in OWA, they have to go into Options and find the check box to enable it.
We would like to set the OWA spell check default to be enabled, so that the users only have to go into the options if they want to turn it off.
How can we set the default setting to be spell check enabled for OWA 2010?

We need to get Windows 8.1 Pro licenses for every computer (to join them to the domain), but we would not need to purchase a separate volume license for every computer.
My understanding is that we only need a single 8.1 Pro volume license to obtain the Volume license media and activation key and then we can apply that to all the computers in our organization that are already otherwise licensed to have the version of the
OS.
We only need Volume licensing for the purpose of reimaging so we won't have to deal with manually entering a different retail key on every system and manually activating each one.
It appears we could use the $100 Pro Pack to upgrade each system from Bing to Pro, but the Pro Pack upgrade would then be tied to the OEM license which is tied to the hardware, so you lose the licenses if the computers are replaced. However, I think
if we buy the full $199 Windows 8.1 retail media for each system, we could reuse the license in the future if we replace these systems due to damage or loss

• SPELL CHECK IN WORD. where is it?

how can you install the spell check in Word? I cannot find the function!

Please note that this forum is for troubleshooting Apple Software Update for Windows, a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, and completely unrelated to Microsoft Office.
For future reference, the info you request is freely available to you in Word's own built in Help files accessible from the Help menu. You can very often answer your own questions by searching the Help files.
Also, issues with Office may be posted to Microsoft's own Mac products forums, as it's their product, and not Apple's:

• Spell check stopped working

What the heck? Been using Pages for years, now the red underline that shows me all my misspelled words is no longer there? Help spell check!

The language of text is part of the text's formatting, it sounds like you have copied and pasted text from somewhere else eg the Internet where it has different language attributed, or None.
Select all the text and apply a language to it:
Inspector > Text > More > Language
...and in future use Paste and Match Style so that inserted text has the same attribures as the existing text you are pasting into.

• Spell Checker on Safari 2.0.4

is there a way to get spell-checker on it?
I checked the preferences... but nothing.

• Spell Checker feature

This would be a silly thing, I have number of users who are requesting me if we could provide them with a Spell Check feature.
I know Mozilla browsers has an inbuilt spell check feature but with IE its not possible. I am not sure if any of you are getting this simple request. If you are - what suggestions have you guys given.
I know salesforce.com has a button called "Check Spelling". I was also wondering if oracle has a plan to put this in future releases.

That and a built in deduping tool!

• ITunes 9 - no spell check??

While writing a review on iTunes I noticed there isn't a spell check like in Mail or any writing software in Mac OS X. I wonder if that is a feature to be added in the future or is a mistake?

I believe that feature only works in Cocoa applications, which iTunes is not.

• Spell check emails before sending

I believe this has been posted elsewhere, but I am wondering if anyone has found a way to make this happen? Is this a possibility for future software upgrades?
I do have the spell check feature turned on, and incorrect words are underlined in red, but I find the correction process cumbersome and really miss the option of spell-checking an entire email before sending it (which was available on my Bold 9900).
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. H

If it helps at all to get this included in a future release we have several users who are used to this feature on their BB7 devices and sorely miss it on their BB10 devices.

• Customising OsX built-in dictionary/spell checker

Hi,
I am running 10.3.9.
The buit-in spell checker seems to be set for American English. I would like to set it to spell check in U.K. English as default. Is this possible?
Christo.

Hi Christo
Yes. In System Preferences > International, tab to Languages where you can select British English, so in future 'colour' for example will be shown as spelled correctly. If it is not in the list click on Edit to find it. Once found move it to the top of the Languages list by dragging it.
Also, if you select a word the dictionary doesn't know you can tell it to learn it, so next time it won't show as incorrect.

• Typing spell check....

um, hello i was wondering if there is anyway to shut off the spell check thing for some words. for example say ur typing (wat) or (ur) or (guna) or (lol) or like a ton other words, well if u type (wat) with spell check on, it always give u the option of (war) and then i have to touch the (x), same with the other ones, but the most ignoying thing has to be (lol) and (ur) and acually all of them r f ing ingnoying, but some arnt, so i was wondering if u can make it not spell check some words like the ones iv said, so yah thanks for helping me if u did =)
P.S i no that u can shut off spell check for everything so dont tell me that...its in settings lolz.

I am not 100% sure, but I believe that the iPhone records your spelling correction cancels and stores them in memory. Then when you use the alternate spellings (lol, yur, lmao) in the future, it will not "correct" them.
One thing that is important, to make this work. You need to cancel the changes by touching the correction balloons, to cancel them. If you just delete the changes made, by back spacing, then it will not learn your typing style.
Once again, I am not 100% sure about this. But the iPhone has stopped fixing certain words.
