Future of WebDynpro ?

Hi Experts,
I am a SAP Consultant and a great WebDynpro fan from the beginning on. We developed some great solutions with WebDynpro frontends.
As far as i know SAP has commited support for WebDynpro until 2018. What will be next? Can anybody of the SAP insiders tell what are the plans with WebDynpro for the next years? Specially compared to upcomming HTML5? What should i say to our customers if they ask to use WebDynpro or other Frontend techniques?
My wishes would be: If something have to change, than keep the WebDynpro metamodel and development tooling (JAVA/ABAP) and change only the rendering engine to use more HTML5 features
Regards
Michael

Hi Michael ,
              As far as i know SAP has commited support for WebDynpro until 2018.
I think this is only Webdynpro Java not for ABAP. Since SAP is highly recommending WDA/WD4A. Also they are migrating ESS/MSS from WDJ to WDA.
Hence the future will be WebDynpro with option of integration Flex/Silverlight.
Thanks,
Arun

  • Javascript future in Webdynpro (JAVA and ABAP)

    Hi WebDyn Pro's,
    I see many sophisticated capabilities enabled inside Webdynpro for JAVA from use of Javascript.  Further, in many cases, Javascript provides the only solution for the requirements!
    From this forum, I think I hear that Javascript capabilities may be disallowed in future WebDynpro releases by SAP.
    I have 3 questions related to this:
    1. Why would SAP want to disallow usage of Javascript inside WebDynpro applications?  What is the harm?
    2. Does SAP think that customers should be able to provide these same capabilities without use of Javascript?
    3. Will this same Javascript limitation exist in WebDynpro for ABAP?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    "Many sophesticated capabilities enabled inside Webdynpro for JAVA from use of Javascript." - that is true
    1. It is to have a standard for development inside, and outside SAP. Otherwise developers will use ... who knows what they will develop... and there have been quality problems in projects that SAP has to deliver - SAP has 30,000 employees, any of whome can develop in their free time. With the current framework, all these issues have been taken into consideration.
    2. SAP and the Webdynpro development team in Walldorf will continue to enhance the webdynpro framework in the forseeable future. There is an alternative if you want to use Javascript. Please use Java Dyn Pages for unlimited java script coding. This can be seen in Portal Development Manual. http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/fd/01f34026d70b06e10000000a155106/content.htm
    3. Yes it will apply in ABAP. WebDynpro is the common framework that is used for both ABAP and Java. It Java/ABAP independent "so" to say. But it works better with Java right now than ABAP.
    Sumit.

  • Future for webdynpro-java

    Hi Everyone ,
                              This is not a technical query just in general .
    I am basically a java developer and got into this webdynpro-java development . Now as the news that- "webdynpro-java will be no more after few years " making me to think abou my career. I am just thinking wheather to go back to java or stayback in this webdynpro. Can someone suggest me on this .
    Thanks

    Hi,
    You can read this blog by Mr.Wolfgang,  Chief Product Owner for BPM & ESB -
    The death of Web Dypro Java has been greatly exaggerated…
    This topic is blown out of proportion and you can get a clear understanding of the disputed topic.
    Arun is right, its like any other product in market which is driven by demand and supply. You cannt deny a product which is wanted by the customer.

  • Is WebDynpro for Java going away?

    Hi,
    Is SAP planning to completely Switch from Webdynpro for java to webdynpro ABAP? What is the future for Webdynpro for java in that case? Like old ITS technology will SAP completely remove support for WebDynpro for Java development!

  • Future for JNET UI elements in ABAP Webdynpro?

    Hi,
    I recently had the opportunity to do an interesting project that included producing a Gantt chart in an ABAP web dynpro application. I used the standard Gantt UI element, which is a JNET control.
    I had to learn a lot about using JNET and specifically the Gantt with webdynpro. I found some documentation but what I found is not very up to date, and I learned a few things the hard way. I am interested in possibly sharing what I learned here in a blog, but I am wondering if there is much interest? And anyway, will the JNET elements continue to be part of webdynpro or will they be replaced? For example, would Flash Islands be preferred over the JNET controls?
    Does anyone know what the future might be for these JNET UI elements?
    Thanks,
    Margaret

    >And anyway, will the JNET elements continue to be part of webdynpro or will they be replaced? For example, would Flash Islands be preferred over the JNET controls?
    This is the SAP internal rules about JNET:  JNET superseeds Islands.  If something can be done in JNET, it must be done in JNET instead of Islands.  Here is an example.  An internal team built a org chart viewer in Flex as a Flash Island. However all Islands must be approved by the SAP UI Governance Council.  The Council determined that the same thing could have been acomplished with JNET and therfore the Flex version was never allowed to ship to customers.  Hopefully that example shows that we take JNET pretty seriously inside of SAP.

  • Future of BSP: Can it be completely replaced by WebDynpro

    Hi All,
    I have read few tutorials on BSP as well as Webdynpro. I couldn't make out the exact difference between both of them. Please help me by answering folling questions:
    1. What are the major differences between BSP and Web Dynpro
    2. SAP still supports BSP or not?
    3. Which scenarios, BSP should be used and which scenarios Webdynpro is used.
    PS: This information is required for proposing solution to our client and will be helpful if adequate examples are given.
    Thanks,
    Lakshmi

    There are many people for whom the iPad is all they need. There are plenty of others who find they need a laptop as well.
    Although this doesn't speak to your daughters specific needs I think it relevant to the discussion. The high school my children attend had been issueing laptops to each student when they started (which would do them their whole high school time) This year they scrapped that program in favor of issueing iPads instead. They have to do somethings a little differently but the device is used for textbooks, writing asignments, taking notes, art, music etc etc. So far they are very pleased with the introduction as they see the iPad as more versatile than the laptop, saves them money on both device and software, and saves the wear and tear on students backs by dramatically reducing the number of paper books they need to carry back and forth from school p-lus the device is lighter too. They have found unexpected benefits such as easy note taking coupled with camera for school excursions.
    For myself I think of the iPad as 2 devices in one. It is a pad and is used for everything a p[ad would be used for especially jotting down ideas whern the ideas occur which can be anywhere. It is also a book. Reading on the new iPad screen is fantastic. That includes books, news and research. It has the extra benefit of being good for social media, video, emails, etc.
    I think every person is going to find their own usage scenario. Some will use it purely for entertainment, others will get some work done in it. Some will use it a lot and some a little. There is a very good chance that your daughter will love using one and will use her laptop much less than before. Only one way to find out

  • Poll: Development in ABAP Objects / Webdynpro vs. classical Dynpro

    Hey there ABAP developers,
    I just want to ask if you can give me one or two minutes of your attention for two poll questions.
    At the moment I´m writing my master thesis about the development of a monitoring tool in ABAP. One of my bigger chapters is about the decision, which programming paradigm should be used for new development projects in SAP. And another important one is about WebDynpro vs. classical Dynpros.
    Because of the fact, that I can´t create any polls in here, I just started this discussion and hope for many replies .
    It would be very nice if some of you could give me an answer to the following questions (only 2 ), so that I can maybe use the result of this poll in my master thesis, if there are enough responses.
    1. What percentage of new development projects are you developing in ABAP Objects? (Not to be considered small reports that just runs for only one time)
         A. 0 %
         B. less than 25%
         C. 25% - 49%
         D. 50% - 75%
         E. more than 75%
    2. Which GUI technology do you prefer?
         A. Classical Dynpro
         B. WebDynpro
         C. Business Server Pages (BSP)
         D. others (please mention)
    I want to thank you in advance for answering the questions,
    Best regards,
    Christoph

    Hi,
    Present SAP Implementation projects are very rare, maximum projects are support and up gradations only .
    If they want Implement the  SAP  newly  , defiantly they should creating ABAP Objects.
    Why Because  ABAP Objects are Object Oriented Concepts,  so,  for  future reference and re usability..etc .
    Now Come to the First Quetion.
    if it is implementation project   ABAP Objects are   25% - 49%.
    if it is Support project ABAP Objects are   25%
    Now Come to the Second Quetion.
    Depend upon Reqmnt, but Most of the Applications are Webdynpro .  i.e 70%.
    Remaining 30% All ( BSP and GUI ....Etc..)
    This is my opinion.

  • Error message as popup in webdynpro for Abap

    Hi,
    Use method REPORT_ERROR_MESSAGE of interface IF_WD_MESSAGE_MANAGER to create an error message in the webdynpro application.
    This works fine, the message is shown in the message area.
    Now I want to have the error message in a popup.
    In the method REPORT_ERROR_MESSAGE i set the parameter SHOW_AS_POPUP on abap_true but i get no popup.
    Is anyone familar with this?
    Thanks.
    Vincent.

    Hi Vincent.
    That's one I fell into as well.  That importing field is not is use yet.  Perhaps in a future support stack.
    You can bypass that by using the CREATE_POPUP_TO_CONFIRM method.  Below, you'll find some code from SAP's documentation.  All you need to do is select the button type and create some actions to receive input from the popup.
    data: l_cmp_api type ref to if_wd_component,
        l_window_manager type ref to if_wd_window_manager,
        l_popup type ref to if_wd_window,
        l_text type string_table,
        l_api type ref to if_wd_view_controller.
    l_cmp_api = wd_comp_controller->wd_get_api( ).
    l_window_manager = l_cmp_api->get_window_manager( ).
    insert `Data where changed` into table l_text. "#EC *
    insert `Do you want to save?` into table l_text. "#EC *
    l_popup = l_window_manager->create_popup_to_confirm(
        text = l_text
        button_kind = if_wd_window=>co_buttons_yesnocancel
        message_type = if_wd_window=>co_msg_type_question
        window_title = 'Test: Popup to confirm'
        window_position = if_wd_window=>co_center )."#EC *
    l_api = wd_this->wd_get_api( ).
    l_popup->subscribe_to_button_event(
        button = if_wd_window=>co_button_yes
        action_name = 'YES'
        action_view = l_api
        is_default_button = abap_true ).
    l_popup->subscribe_to_button_event(
        button = if_wd_window=>co_button_no
        action_name = 'NO'
        action_view = l_api
        is_default_button = abap_false ).
    l_popup->subscribe_to_button_event(
        button = if_wd_window=>co_button_cancel
        action_name = 'CANCEL'
        action_view = l_api
        is_default_button = abap_false ).
    l_popup->open( ).
    Hope this helps.

  • Dynamic table in Webdynpro Java

    Hi Colleagues,
    I need to develop a table dynamically in webdynpro(Java), the table should not contain scrollbar, header, lines and border...Actual requirement is to group 12 elements in the from of a table
    could anyone please help me here?
    Thanks & Regards
    Swetha

    Hi Armin,
    In a window i have to develop a part of window which looks like this
    Image             URL                      Description
    Image             URL                      Description
    Image             URL                      Description
    Image             URL                      Description
    I have tried doing this using Flow layout for each line
    But when i follwed that the last column "description" is not alligned in a straight line(for all rows)
    structure is not even as shown above
    (varying depending upon the length of the URL)
    Here i have attached the piece of code i  used
    IWDTransparentContainer MainContainer1 = (IWDTransparentContainer)view.createElement(IWDTransparentContainer.class);
           IWDFlowLayout flowlayout1 =  (IWDFlowLayout)MainContainer1.createLayout(IWDFlowLayout.class);
    ////For adding Image
           IWDImage image = (IWDImage)view.createElement(IWDImage.class);
           image.createLayoutData(IWDFlowData.class);
           image.setSource("~sapicons/s_b_alet.gif");
    /////for Adding URL
           IWDLinkToAction link1 = (IWDLinkToAction)view.createElement(IWDLinkToAction.class);
           IWDTextAccessor link1text = wdComponentAPI.getTextAccessor();
           link1.setText("Collaboration Window");
           IWDAction Action1  = (IWDAction)view.getAction("Openlink");
           link1.setOnAction(Action1);
           IWDFlowData linkdata1 = link1.createLayoutData(IWDFlowData.class);
           WDLayoutCellDesign rightpad = WDLayoutCellDesign.R_PAD;
           WDLayoutCellSeparator seperator = WDLayoutCellSeparator.LARGE;
           linkdata1.setCellDesign(rightpad);
           linkdata1.setVGutter(seperator);
    ///for adding description
           IWDTextView text1 = (IWDTextView)view.createElement(IWDTextView.class);
           text1.setText("Testing");
           IWDFlowData textdata1 = text1.createLayoutData(IWDFlowData.class);
           textdata1.setCellDesign(rightpad);
           textdata1.setVGutter(seperator);
           MainContainer1.addChild(image);
           MainContainer1.addChild(link1);
           MainContainer1.addChild(text1);
           IWDGridData maincont1 = MainContainer1.createLayoutData(IWDGridData.class);
           maincont1.setPaddingLeft("10px");
           maincont1.setPaddingTop("20px");
    I found that this static way of adding rows is not the right way( Keeping in mind the future enhancements)
    So thought of trying it through table
    i have used IWDtable ...but the look does'nt meets the requirement at all(it has header....border..scrollbar..rows and colums are seperated by lines---> which are not needed)
    Could you please let me know is there a approach to do this?
    Thanks & Regards

  • ECatt - ABAP WebDynpro - Floorplan Manager

    Does anyone know how to create eCatt scripts for ABAP WebDynpro applications that contain Application Configurations using the Floorplan Manager.  We are using SRM 7.0 and all user transactions are WebDynpro based. In order to regression test changes to certain development objects we want to utilize eCatt.  However, the WebDynpro applications all use the Floorplan Manager concept in SRM.  So, there is one basic WebDynpro Application Component (FPM_OIF_COMPONENT).  There are multiple WebDynpro Applications defined (in our example, /sapsrm/wda_l_fpm_oif) for this one application component. Within this Application, there are multiple application configurations (in our example /SAPSRM/WDAC_I_FPM_OIF_SC_PROF).
    Does anyone know if:
    A. eCatt supports WebDynpro ABAP (I have seen many old posts that indicate WebDynpro ABAP is not supported but nothing recent)
    B. How to create test scripts using Application components with multiple applications and multiple application configurations.
    Thanks!

    Thanks Thomas for your quick reply.
    Thomas Jung wrote:
    Testing is done via Web Dynpro Application.  So you would need to create an application (even if just temporary for testing) for each configuration set that has the application configuration built into the application parameters.
    A point of clarification:
    Within the WebDynpro Component (FPM_OIF_COMPONENT in my example), I would need to create a new Application and then a new Application Configuration that is an exact copy of the Application configuration used in the standard SAP ?  If yes, that is a significant undertaking for these new SRM applications. Since this Floorplan Manager concept seems to be the wave of the future is there any plan to allow eCatt to use the input of the Application Configuration rather than (or in addition to) the WD Application itself?
    Regardless, thanks again, I have been searching for this answer for a few days now.

  • Need expertice opinion on WebDynpro ABAP vs FPM for heavy custom apps

    Hi Experts,
    I have a lot of custom UI development,.for external users in SAP. Most of these applications can be simply developed using WebDynpro ABAP framework. If I do the same development using FPM framework I may need to do lot of reaseach espcially controling the UI behaviours like hiding, changing table cell  colors based on the data, manipulating the UI behavior in the runtime, lot more like this.
    The question I have is , which one is the right tool for my development FPM vs WebDynpro ABAP, what is the value in building the same apps in FPM rather then WebDynpro ABAP? If I develop these apps in WebDynpro ABAP does my client loose any new capabilities in he future releases? are any other drawbacks?
    The challenge i see the FPM Feeder classses doesnt have lot of interfaces other then few like ( IF_FPM_GUIBB_FORM, IF_FPM_GUIBB_FORM_REPEATER,IF_FPM_GUIBB_LIST,IF_FPM_GUIBB_SEARCH,IF_FPM_GUIBB_TREE,IF_FPM_GUIBB_LAUNCHPAD )
    to extend more custom UI functionalities, and the other thing I may need to invest lot of time in reseacrhing and analysing the framework events etc....Please can you shed some light on it and put me in right direction.
    Appreciate your time and help.
    Thanks
    Krishna

    Hello Krishna,
    the whole story revolves around reusability and abstraction, extensibility atleast in this context.
    FPM offers more abstraction than Webdynpro. i am sure we all appreciate the standard webdynpro components for ALV, Value help, as this is something we could reuse and if we build our components that it manipulates itself with the help of configuration, customization and personalization.
    So all the Standard SAP Dev could be enhanced (not modified) by simple, configuration, FPM is built around this concept.
    So if you want to do custom development, which could be extended for your different customers with minimal efforts, you could go for FPM.
    So here are some takeaways
    1) FPM offers more abstraction than Webdynpro
    2) FPM offers more reusability
    3) Say manipulating the UI behaviour and say some customers wants view1 first and other doesnt want view 1 and wants only view 2. so in FPM you could simply do it with different configuration. and with Webdynpro, you need to manage this dynamically based on certain application parameter or you may end up copying certain comp,,or you use different usage,,,,and you could calibrate this.
    Regarding limitation with FPM interfaces, could you explictly share what custom development you intend to do and in worst cases, you could always use freestyle UIBB,, which is webdynpro abap
    in that scenario, atleast wiring, application config(app parameter, combination of webdynpro, with thier respective config),,could be reused.

    Thanks in Advance.

    Hi Varun,
    think of WebDynpro as a replacement UI technology for SAPGUI. It is designed to support interactive transactions (i.e. multi-screen) with a standard look and feel for professional users.
    BSP is designed to support simple web-style transactions where the user has a fairly simple interaction with the page and you can tailor the user experience to look any way you like.
    So WebDynpro would suit a rewrite of the Sales Order Entry transaction. BSP would suit building a web-style shopping basket experience. and
    i. In Web DynPro there is lesser coding when compared with BSP. i.e Web Dynrpo are more dependent on Designing rather than coding whereas, BSP's are done by coding.
    ii. There is low possibilty of customization in web dynrpo, i.e We need to use only the available color or style themes available..It is not easy to have user defined color themes but in BSP we can have our own color themes at ease.. and
    The difference is a little bit more subtle than that. Both webdynpro and BSP call ABAP function modules from HTTP. The BSP interface does this via programming in SE80, the webdynpro does this via programming in the Java development workbench. The BSP enters the SAP systenm via the ICM and is 'routed' to ICF where call are then made to executre ABAP (a good example is we use SOAP BSP's). Webdynpro routes via the ICM to the Java engine which then executes the Java to cann the functions via an RFC interface called a JCo connection.
    Another difference to note is SAP is now dedicated to using webdynpro as its internet platform of the future. This indicates that it aims to eventually retire such things as ITS and BSP.
    and also check
    What is difference between WebDynpro and BSP?
    Cheers,
    Bhavana
