Fuzzy External Display

Hi all,
I just purchased a new 13" MBP and a 23" Dell display to go along with it. The display runs at HD resolution (1920x1080), and I have it connected to my computer via DVI. However, the image looks a little fuzzy, and fonts, especially small ones, in general, do not look good. I have calibrated the color, and adjusted settings on the display, and I got it to look slightly better, but it just is not up to par with the quality of the image on the computer itself, at least in terms of fineness of the fonts. I have tried to hook the display up to a friend's 15 inch MBP using the same Mini DisplayPort adapter and DVI cable, but the picture looked about the same as my computer.
I don't know where the weak link is. I don't know if it is the display, the Mini DisplayPort adapter, the cable, settings on the computer, or the display itself.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Are you mirroring? If so, you aren't running that display at full native resolution, but at the much lower resolution of the MBP's internal display.
Else, most likely the display itself if you are comparing to the internal. The internal will have smaller pixels, and so look 'sharper'.

  • Trouble with fuzzy external display?

I have a 13" Late 2012 Macbook Pro, and a Samsung E2420L Monitor, which I have used in the past with no problem. But now, when I hook it up, the pixels on the screen are very jittery. When I change the display settings, the only one that doesn't make the pixels jitter is 720p, but it isn't very good quality. After hooking it up to a windows laptop, it worked fine in 1080p, so I know it's my mac. Any suggestions?

Could be the computer may need to be inspected and a full diagnostic run to see
if there may be an issue relating to the hardware inside. If there is no external
adapter in use between the computer and the display, and the other Mac tested
with the display does not exhibit similar issues, and is of similar build vintage, an
issue may exist and it could be a symptom of hardware failure.
An Apple specialist or perhaps Apple Store genius bar could run some testing to
see what is behind this matter; with an appointment one or another could help
at least to learn of a probable cause and a path to a cure.

  • Win 8.1, Retina MBP, external display, stupid scaling

I've got a Retina MacBook Pro (Late 2013) with a 2880x1800 display, also connected to an external 1920x1080 display, dual-booted into Windows 8.1 with the latest Boot Camp drivers and the most recent nVidia drivers.
In Windows, when I go into the Display control panel and make "Change the size of all items" a little larger, then things look fine on the external display - but the laptop's display shows a teensy tiny taskbar and teensy tiny icons on the desktop.
If I check "Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays", then things look fine on the laptop's display - but the external display's windows and icons are HUGE.
And either way, if I'm not running the laptop's display at Retina resolution - even if I'm running at exactly half resolution, 1440x900 - then the laptop's display is terribly blurry. Makes me want to go back to a pre-Retina laptop.
What are the best Windows settings to have reasonably-sized windows and icons on the Retina display as well as the external display under Windows 8.1?
(Yes, this is just another reminder that I shouldn't bother trying to run Windows on a Mac ... but I thought that handling multiple displays with different pixel densities was supposed to be Windows 8.1's strong suit?)

Good point, but then it's a shame that not only can I not take advantage of the Retina resolution, but then the lower resolution setting makes the Retina display look terribly fuzzy. Even set to exactly half the resolution (2880x1800 -> 1440x900), it looks like WIndows is trying to fuzz everything instead of simply pixel-doubling it.
I understand that's a shortcoming of the nVidia driver. I'll go find the nVidia board to complain...
(I'm extending the desktop, btw, not mirroring.)

  • Macbook Pro Retina (Late 2013) HDMI External Display

I just bought a new MacBook 13" (late 2013). I have two LG displays (LG22LS4R) which I am trying to hook up. One via MB HDMI port to HDMI and the other is Thunderbolt adpater to HDMI.
The issue is when I connect MB HDMI port to HDMI, my external display renders a really horrible picture. The display is really fuzzy and the fonts look horrible too. I have tried all different types of settings. Can anyone suggest anything?
    Please help

Thanks but I tried using another cable but same result. I do get a signal when I set it to 1080p but it looks awful. When I try to set it to the external displays native resolution I lose the signal.
Surely other people have encountered a simliar problem?

  • 15.4" with lid open + external display

Hi there. I have a lovely new MacBook Pro 15.4", and have bought a Dell 20" UltraSharp external display. The Dell monitor has 1680 x 1050 resolution which is great. The only problem is I have inconsistent resolutions: when I close the lid of my Mac, and use it in closed lid mode, the resolution is great - 1680 x 1050. Everything's nice, clear & clean. But when I open the lid, the resolution reverts back to the Mac display resolution - ie, 1440 x 900. Everything looks bigger, slightly fuzzy and the icons on the desktop get all re-arranged. This is a hassle. If I push F7, the external display just comes up with the desktop background, which means I can't use it. I'm frustrated - could anybody point me in the right direction? Thanks very much.

What you're experiencing is normal when using the displays in mirror mode. The resolutions must match, which means that the monitor with the lowest maximum resolution will control, which in your case is the MacBook's internal display. To use the external display at it's maximum resolution, you need to run the displays in Extended Desktop mode; turn off Mirroring in the Displays system preference.
If I push F7, the external display just comes up with the desktop background, which means I can't use it.
Sure you can. Just drag your application windows over to that screen (which direction you have to drag will be controlled in the Displays -> Arrange system preference).
For more information, try searching your Mac Help for "multiple displays".
    Hope this helps.

  • 19 inch or 22 inch external display?

I have a black Macbook (older generation). I'm looking into buying the Acer H213H as an external display (21.5 inch LCD).
Before I buy it, I'd like to know if external displays with higher native resolutions than the Macbook will show fuzzier text/images than external displays with resolutions that are closer to that of the Macbook.
A simpler way to ask would be: will a 19 inch LCD show a crisper image than a 22 inch LCD when connected to the Macbook?
Thanks for any advice on the matter!!

The MacBook can display higher resolutions than 1280x800 when connected to an external display. Therefore, either monitor you are looking at will display crisply.

  • Internal vs. External Display Resolution

    Hi,
I just purchased a KVM switch by IO Gear Model GCS1782. Hooked up my Mac Book Pro 15 inch 2.16 Ghz with DVI Dual Link and Mac Mini Power PC with DVI single link.
The KVM is working perfectly. The Mac Mini Display resolution is 1680x1050 as normal. The MBP Color LCD is 1440x900 as normal.
Question: Why does the display on the internal display of the MBP look crisper than the Cinema Display? The CD looks like a lo res VGA monitor.

Okay everybody...something funny happened this morning.
Last night I put my MBP to sleep by using "Insomnia" and woke it up this morning and to my surprise, the resolution is matched. No more fuzziness. I have the display icon on the title bar which shows the only one display, only the ACD at 1680x1050. Yesterday it showed two displays because I was mirroring.
Yesterday morning I hooked up a new KVM (I/O Gear Model GCS1782) and discovered video display problems (not from the KVM). From 10:30 AM to 2:45 PM I called IO Gear support, Apple Sale Support (x2), Apple Technical Support (x2), and continuously scoured these forum reading and posting.
    Yesterday:
    1. Could not close lid of MBP because ACD would go black. (Solution: Insomnia)
    2. Could not get MBP LCD display be crisp on the external ACD (Solution: Insomnia)
    3. Mirrored the MBP causing the ACD to use a lower resolution (Solution: Insomnia)
    Today, all is well.
I think it had to do with the MBP sleep mode or ????. I am not positive on what exactly happened to get the max resolution. I am just a wee bit concerned that it will happen again because I have to disconnect the MBP tomorrow and reconnect without the confidence I can get it to work. One thing for sure, I won't mirror any longer.
    Lessons Learned:
    1. No one person is proficient with using external displays on MBP. The pieces of information that I needed were either scattered and fragmented or just not available.
    2. The people at Apple is nice, helpful, and well meaning. But this particular situation revealed a lack of technical cohesion in its communication.
I want to thank all the good people who help me along this journey.

  • External Display Blurry when Mirrored

I have a 20" viewsonic VX2035 that is hooked up to my gaming rig. If I use it with my MBP and choose the mirror displays setting, when the Viewsonic is at its proper resolution (1680x1050) everything looks blurry. When at its correct resolution and not mirrored it looks normal. And it looks normal but slightly distorted if mirrored and at the 1440x900.
    Any ideas?

I've found exactly the same thing.
In "mirror mode", the external display (for me a 23" cinemadisplay HD) uses the macbookpro's internal screen's resolution (though it does uprez it), even though on screen preferences it may be set much higher (1920x1200 on mine). Hence the fuzziness.
In "dual display" mode, and in lid-closed mode (where the external display is the only one on), it works perfectly.
Not sure why this is. If anyone has a fix, please post.

  • Choosing External Display

    Hi,
I'm new here and hope you will forgive me for posting a question that I am sure has been discussed before. I'm in a real hurry though...
    I have an iBook G4 1.2Mhz, 12", running OS 10.3.9
Since I started with photography as a serious hobby, the display has been a major frustration. It is just way too small, difficult to edit pictures on it. So I would love a larger external display, and now I was asked to wish for a specific one (as a GIFT!:), but real quickly! Problem is, I need an LCD-display, don't have space for a CRT.
Somebody told me that my only option is getting a new computer! That can't be the only option... Is there a way for me to, safely and successfully, use e.g. a 20.1" NEC widescreen display? Or, is my only option going for a 15" NEC with the same resolution as the built in display (1024 x 768)? It is of course important that the quality of what it displays, is good, since we're talking image editing.
Thanks a lot for any help you can give me, it will be truly appreciated!
PS! I really don't know anything about these things. I have used 8 PB's and this iBook since 1992, but never really learned about how to deal with things like this. So I hope you can bear with me in my ignorance. I'm real scared of doing anything that may harm my iBook, or something like that. Saw that there is a software you can use (spinning something?), but it seemed risky...
    Summer Greetings,
    PP
    iBook 12" G4 1.2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I thought I had checked the info carefuly enough before I got my wife a ViewSonic VX912 TFT monitor, but noooooo. I now realize that I had to use the hack to get higher resolutions.
My question is, how did you get the 1280 x 1024 to fill the screen? I had it @ 1280 x 1024, but the image was centered on the monitor with lots of black around it. And actually now I cannot even pick the 1280 x 1024. I can only go to 1152 x 870...no idea why though.
Any help would be appreciated. My wife uses the computer to work on her doctorate and the text is so fuzzy. I feel bad as it was me that said it would help her eyes getting this monitor :/
BTW she is on an iBook G4 late 2003
    TIA,
    IE

  • G550: Display flickers / distorts. External display fine.

I have a weird issue with my G550 (which is out of warranty).  The screen flickers and distorts (fuzzy colours around objects on the screen).   If I flex the case in a certain way the problem goes away, it's hard to describe but if I apply pressure in a certain direction to the back left of the case it solves the issue... but as soon as I stop applying pressure it goes away.  I'm thinking it's a loose connection somewhere between the GPU and the display, but I'm not entirely sure where to look.  If I plugin in external displays they work fine, no flickering or distortion at all.

    hi deicist,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
If the LCD screen flickers when you open or close the lid or if tilt the LCD screen on a certain angle then the problem lies on the LVDS or LCD cable (possibly got worn out by opening/closing the lid alot of times). If you're interested in fixing it, you can get spare parts here:

  • Can not properly view cover flow in full screen in external display

My mac is the new Mac book pro 15.4 inch screen and I connect my mac pro to external display e.g. Samsung LCD monitor 24 inches.
The bug is that I can not PROPERLY view full screen (in external display) for some application e.g. iTunes, and Front Row.
    - When I use iTunes, I can not properly view Cover Flow view in full screen (in the external display screen) except the case of mirror display.
    - For Front Row, I can not view full screen in external display but only my mac display.
However, for other DVD or VDO players, I can view movie on external display in full screen and I still be able to do other works on my mac screen.
Please let me know how to solve it.

found the likely issue!  are you participating in youtube's html5 trial?  go here and it will tell you if you are:

  • How do i use an external display with my macbook pro?

How do I use an external display with a macbook pro?

Just buy the proper adapter cord, such as MiniDisplay port to HDMI for example.  Plug it in and it will be automatically recognized.  Use System Preferences > Displays to set options.
The display can Mirror your primary desktop or Extend the Desktop.

  • Connecting a MacBook to an external display or projector

I have tried to connect my MacBook to a projector and to a TV using the mini-DVI to Video adapter, both with the same poor results. Here's the steps I took:
    - Turned on the TV
    - Connected the video cable to the TV "video in"
    - Connected the video cable to the MacBook with the mini-DVI to vieo adapter
    - Opened the MacBook
    - Turned it on
The MacBook boots up, the MacBook resolution changes and the video on the TV is distorted, showing essentially three images of the MacBook display. Any attempt to adjust the resolution using system preferences just makes it worse.
Has anyone had success using a MacBook for presentations using either a TV or a projector and, if so, what procedure do you use to connect?

    Greetings from Hong Kong-
I have a major presentation to give in a couple of days and have NOT been successful connecting to an external display. I am starting to freak out. Any instructions would be helpful!

  • DVD player full screen on external display

I'm looking for a way to play my DVD full screen on my external display while I can work in other apps on the main screen. Preferrably with Apple DVD Player (OS X 10.7 Lion in my case). Any ideas? Hidden settings perhaps?
It's stuff like this makes feel let down by Apple. It's natural feature to want this like for instance when playing DVD on a big screen in front of an audience and prepare something on the main display for viewing.

I know I can do this already with VLC. For some discs that don't play well in VLC I'd prefer DVD Player though.

  • Disconnecting from external display changes background, disconnect server shares, inactivates desktop icons.

I have a user working on a MacBook Pro, Lion OS X 10.8.2, connected to an external display. When disconnecting from the external display the background picture changes, he can’t open documents saved to desktop, and the connection to the server shares is lost.  Rebooting does not resolve the issue while it is disconnected from the external display.  If he reconnects the MacBook back to the external monitor sometimes he has to reboot to get everything back to normal.  It almost seems like it is logging him into a different account or profile or something like that (please excuse my messy terminology as most of our users are still using PCs).  However if you look at what account is logged in, it is still the same account that he logged in with that morning.  The Mac is not authenticating to the network, just connecting to server shares.  Has anyone experienced this issue before and if so is there a fix for it?

The Mac has a long history of assuming that ANY adapter still present means the display is still present -- you need to remove the adapter as well as the cable, if present.
So my theory articulated above is that the disconnect is not registered correctly. This would mean that the second display is still seen as present. You could check this by invoking:
    System Preferences > Displays ...
and looking for the Arrange pane (shown above) which is ONLY present when multiple displays are attached. More detailed information can be found in About this Mac  > ( More info ) Graphics & Displays ...
... specifically the NAME of each attached display is shown or an indication (no display connected):
