Fuzzy screen capture, very strange

Hi there,
I'm using a G5 with tiger, and have recently started to notice a very odd problem. Whenever I use screen capture (shiftcmd4 to capture a part of the screen), the resulting image is slightly blurry and indistinct. The even weirder thing is that not the whole image is affected, just most of it, and the distortion is not uniform across the whole capture area. Also, the areas affected do not seem to be the same each time.
It's quite a slight effect, but noticeable, and very annoying. Plus, it's only started happening today or very recently. If anyone has any idea what is going on I would greatly appreciate the help!
Cheers

well, that does help... a little... here goes...
delete the 'com.apple.universalaccess.plist' file and log out and in or restart.
yourhome/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.universalaccess.plist (you knew the path)
then test a screenshot.
if still no joy try the following (the way i do it) ...
shutdown - startup and hold down commandoption+PR for 3 chimes (pram zap - you knew that too).
as soon as you hear the third chime, switch your two fingers from the P+R keys to O+F (while command+option are down).
release the keys when the Open Firmware screen appears.
type..
set-defaults
press return and type...
reset-nvram
press return and type...
reset-all
press return.
when you get to the desktop go to the System Preferences>Startup Disk pane and select your disk.
test another screenshot.

  • Fuzzy screen capture in FCPX

Hello. I imported a QuickTime screen capture into FCPX, and the playback is fuzzy. Why? Is something wrong with the file, or just the playback?

Russ and Tom, thanks for your replies. The file looks very crisp when played with QT. When I click Get Info, I see 1780 x 1080, H.264, 34.2 MB.

  • My iPhone is saying its taking up 10g of photos and I only have 154 pictures. Also when I got my screen fixed I had 2,000 and when I got it back I had 0 but my wallpapers remained.. Very strange. It's as if my phone still has the pictures but I can't see

My phone is saying all my storage for pictures is taken up when I only have 154 picture.. It happened when I got my screen fixed at a kiosk in a mall and I had 2,000 pictures when I gave it to him and when I got it back I had 0 but my wallpapers remained.. Very strange it's as if my phone still has the pictures on there.. But I can't see them. Anybody know what I should do :( I keep having to delete apps because I have no more storage for no reason :(((

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

  • Very Strange Rendition of the "Blue Screen" Problems

So I'm familiar with some of the blue screen freezes, but the problems that I am encountering are very very strange, so let me start:
Two computers are affected: a MacBook Pro and an Aluminum iMac. Both computers are running Leopard.
    The MacBook Pro:
A few days ago, it crashed to the blue screen. Turned the machine off and powered it back on. The computer goes to the gray apple screen, then to the blue screen. Once at the blue screen, it does this: Blue screen for a few seconds -> progress indicator spins for a few seconds and disappears -> Mouse shows up for a few seconds and disappears -> Blue screen -> Progress indicator -> Mouse. It cycles like this indefinitely. I tried deleting the loginwindow preferences. I also tried deleting application enhancer preferences, no luck...
    The iMac:
Started up fine. After a few minutes of not using the machine, it will go to the blue screen. Turn machine off and it starts again. Here's where it gets strange: If you start up with safe mode, the iMac exhibits the blue screen cycle on login that the MacBook Pro experiences. Without safemode, it started. So, I tried creating a new user account to see if it was user preferences, and up on doing that, now the iMac gets hung up on the blue screen login cycle just like the MacBook Pro with or without safe mode.
    So... weird/misc. parts:
Two machines that have been running leopard for some time, no recent upgrades.
Problems starting happening at around the same time.
Computers linked on LAN and Time Capsule.
    Both computers using MobileMe.
    I'm stuck - any ideas?!?!

    Some additional thoughts...
the MacBook Pro did not have automatic login and had the problems. The iMac did have automatic login and did not have the problems. When automatic login was disabled on the iMac, it did have the problems. When the iMac used safemode, which disables automatic login, it had the problems also.
So... clearly something with the login window is messed up... but I tried deleting the login window preferences with no avail. Not sure what this means, but interesting I suppose.

  • Very strange screen problem (previous app leaves mark)

I'm Danielle, i'm from the Netherlands and i'm having a very strange problem with my iPad mini (bought It August 2013).
never had problems with my iPad, but since a few weeks i have à strange problem with my screen.
when i open an app, for example messages, and i use it for a while, and then return to the home screen or go to another app,the messages app leaves a mark o'n the screen at the left side of my screen (an area of 2 cm from the Side). my english is not very good but im trying to describe it.
I cant make a print screen of iT because its a problem with the screen So you dont see iT on a print screen.
    so:
    - i see a mark of THE previous screen(app) on my screen
    - first i throught iT was: in dutch we call it doorgebrand, translated in english: burn through (dont know if i translated it right). Like a old computer when you are working at a screen for to long so letters and text are printed, permanently, on the Screen (Thats why you have screen savers).
    - but: it disapears in a few minutes or if i open a black screen.
    - It's not very clear to see (The longer i used the app, The clearer the Mark) and iT has horizontal stripes
i hope someone has experience with this problem or knows what i have to do.
i never heard of this problem before and i cant Find iT on Google.
    kind regards,
    danielle from the netherlands

A workaround is to turn the brightness down, it may reduce the 'burn in' less & makes it less noticeable.
You should get in contact with Apple ASAP if you consider it bad enough to need repair, it should have a 1 year warranty. I suspect it is considered just to be how it behaves.

  • Strange Screen Capture Problem

Ok, I'm stumped and hope someone can help me out.
For some reason, on my macbook pro, I can't get the screen capture cmd-shift-4-space to work. All the other screen capture modes work (eg. cmd-shift-3 and cmd-shift-4).
When I hit the cmd-shift-4 command and then hit the space bar, I see the camera show up, but it will not select individual windows. Instead the whole screen is highlighted and when I click, it takes a blank white picture. How do I fix this? Thanks.

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode? Hold down the Shift key as soon as you hear the startup chime. The boot will take longer, as the system repairs the drive, clears some caches, and disables all third party startup items (and some Apple ones as well). Try it in Safe Mode, then reboot normally and try it again. If it works in Safe Mode, but not when you reboot, then there is a conflict with some startup item.

  • VERY strange lag on a Dell Optiplex 760

I thought it would be a good idea to keep a 16GB flash drive on my keychain that booted Arch so I could work on HW for college in a consistent OS!  Everything is working great so far, but I ran into a very strange problem with a Dell Optiplex 760.  During the normal Arch init process, everything loads great, except for when it gets to the udev stage where everything hangs.  But here's the strange part of this scenario: the problems go away when I start typing random keys or move the mouse!  If I don't do this, the system hangs completely from what I can tell.  This happens at the console and with X.
The service tag for this machine is FDCQQJ1, and the dell.com driver area brings up this list of hardware and (windows) drivers for it.

  • Screen capture sound repeats every  30-40 seconds

Hi all I need help! Last week in the middle of my work day nothing special, the system started playing the camera shutter / screen capture. I started timing between the shutter, every 30 seconds, very annoying - the camera shutter sound - same as the shift-4 screen capture sound and same as the sound that occurs when you press the back button in terminal. I have a 15 inch mac book pro. 2009 model.
I wondered whether someone had installed a hidden shell script or apple script program and is capturing my screen and maybe sending it over the net.
I have checked activity monitor and did not notice any programs running like "screencapture" or anything else like that. I have also turned hidden files visable on, but i can't find any screen capture directory or files: .jpg, .pdf, .png files I should be seeing lots of them for every 30 seconds per capture. Back to terminal here is my dump from ps ax command:

  • Screen captures become corrupt as attachment in Mail

I have created a screen capture (with shiftapple4) which creates an PNG image on my desktop. Then I create a new email message and attaches the screen capture (not using the Windows compatible attachment mode) and sends it.
When doing like this the the attached image becomes corrupt. Regardless if I send it to myself (on my mac) or to a windows user using Thunderbird or Pine. I can't open the file and when I try to save the attachment to disk the file becomes empty (file size is 0 bytes). Pine gives a little more feedback and complains about errors in the Base64 encoding.
The thing is, that if I first open the PNG file in the Preview tool and saves it to a new PNG file (save as...) it all works! It also works if I simply copies the file to another computer (linux) and back (using scp). I have no problem of sending any other attachments than the screen captures. I think this is very strange!
Anyone have a clue what the error is?

  • Very Strange Touchscreen Issue

I recieved and activated my new 8GB iPhone about two days ago and it worked great up until just a few hours ago. I am experiencing the known issue of the bottom 1/2 inch or so of the touchscreen not responding to my touch, which in turn is affecting a lot of main elements of the phone such as SMS, e-mail, iPod, etc. Among that issue, I also encountered a very strange occurrence whilst I was testing the 'dead zone' on my iPhone: Certain sections of the dead zone work if I hover my finger about 2 -3 centimeters from the screen. It is a very strange thing but true, lol. I can even capture video footage of this if it's necessary.
Since I bought my iPhone from an AT&T store, should I return it to them for a new one on the spot or should I do it through Apple? I hope it doesn't come down to the latter since I do not live anywhere near an Apple Store (New Orleans, LA) and I just switched from T-Mobile to AT&T so I'd really hate to purchase a cheap temporary phone while my iPhone is being replaced/fixed.
Edit: Have a Merry Christmas, everyone!
    Message was edited by: Fiyerstorm

I just talked to Apple Support and they are going to repair it for me, it's just I need to wait til Friday since I am broke from Christmas! Once I get paid, then I can dish out the 30 dollars to get a rental iPhone to hold me over. The restore temporarily fixed the touchscreen issue since it happened again hours later.
Also, nobody I know who would have a spare AT&T phone doesn't come to mind so I can't just borrow a phone and start the repair process now, but the wait isn't too bad. At least they do not limit the iPhone rental to just physical Apple Store customers!
Thanks for the help, folks. :V

  • Very strange problem - completely baffled

    Please help!
This is really difficult to explain, but bare with me. I have finished my movie - it is 1 hour 41 minutes, with lots of songs, extracted audio, photo slideshows using Ken Burns effect etc. Also has some Snapz Pro screen capture of Google Earth fly-throughs.
It was all fine, and then I went in to tweak it a little - move chapters further from transitions etc - and then when I played the end of it to check all was OK, it faded out as was supposed to happen, then suddenly started playing two minutes worth of clips from earlier in the project. I tried lots of things to no avail. Quit without saving, and opened up again. Tried saving it to see if maybe that would work, and it sort of did - but now rather than have the two minutes of clips, I have two minutes of blackness with no sound.
The really odd part is that this blackness doesn't show up as a clip. It is completely inaccessible, but when you look at the timeline pane with all the little blue clips cut up, at the very end it shows a grey space. I'd assume this might be the case if there was an audio file there, but there isn't.
So as a result, I'm worried that if I put this movie into iDVD, it will end up having the two minutes of black at the end of it.
    Any clues?

sorry for my english... , shall we switch to German ? ;-))
    external drive
is formatted as MacOsExtended, not fat32?
but, as said, "best practise", normally, an ext. drive should work....
    "alien" formats:
some poeple use "strange" (=from "somewhere" in the iNet) mp3 files, or .ogg encoded music, or jpeg2000 pictures. etc..
    in your case: forget that....................
    chapters - ok.
    using themes, no modifications.. fine.
don't know the exact term: in iDVD, you can switch on a red line, which shows you, if all assets are within a border, every TV can show...
you used the theme "as is"......... forget that....................
    iTS purchased music
to be honest: I'm not "up to date" with this discussion, using iLife6/QT7/all updates .. (I'm still 20th century...):
in my config, iTS purchased music needs a "conversion" first, before usage in iLifeprojects...:
as you know, these files contain a DRM; you have to:
    create a playlist in iTunes
    burn an audioCD
re-import from that disk into iTunes
(user hint: add some "sign" to theses DRM-stripped version of your music, as a * or a ~ ....)
use the DRM-freed versions of music only in your projects......
on my antiqué system (see my specs down below), encoding needs about 8 - 10x of project length.. your project would need here max. 20h of encoding..

  • Caps lock button acting very strange.

I recently got a Lenovo T420 thinkpad. Everything has been great until earlier today I tried to log-in to buzzport ( a GT website) and when I hit the caps lock button all these weird things happened. Google Chrome went into full screen, and the "elements" thing came up. Im not sure exactly what it is, but it looks like some sort of HTML code for the website. oh and if it also enters the text "09" when caps lock is pressed. well anyways, now this happens everytime I press caps lock. I opened notepad and pressed caps lock. The result was "09" followed by an endless stream of 1's which continued until I pressed caps lock again. This is very strange and I couldn't find any information about this on google. I don't know what could have caused this, but its very frustrating because this is a brand new laptop. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!
edit: so i've been playing with it, and im convinced that basically instead of just doing what caps lock does, it is pressing a series of other buttons as well including the 09, the 1's, and opening what i now know is called the elements pannel which normally opens with ctrl + shift + C. so in other words, for some reason pressing caps lock preses the buttons "09 ctrl + shift + C 11111111111111111111111111111111111111111"
edit 2: ok it just got weirder. I fixed the problem...sort of. I started thinking about everything i have done differently today. I mean ive only had the lap top for a few days after all. tonight is the first night i used the mute button. i unmuted the laptop, and now everything is fine. if i mute, then caps lock acts weird again. I could just always go to zero volume rather than mute, but just as a curiosity, why is this happening? it makes no sense!

I noticed that some problems don't seem to get attention. I am typing this using a bluetooth keyboard on top of my G4 PowerBook, which is hardly an elegant solution to my caps lock problem. If I spend close to $2000 on a laptop, which is close to the most I spend on any consumer product after a house and car, is it unreasonable to expect that after a mere four years, it can be repaired, rather than simply tossed aside. I am an expat living in a SE Asian country without any Apple Authorised resellers etc. When I make the trip to Thailand to get my machine fixed, I'd like to know that someone there will know what to do to sort this problem, without me being faced with the prospect of having to pay a lot of money to buy a new one or replace hardware that is not in fact needing replaced. That is why I posted on this forum. Was I mistaken in thinking that in the entire Mac using community, there isn't more than one other person having the same issue as me? Is anybody from Apple aware of this problem and do they have any idea how to fix it? I'm not seeking to be antagonistic here, I'd just like to think that somebody, somewhere out there has some idea, what has gone wrong with my PowerBook and can help me get it fixed.
p.s I sorted out the large fuzzy Apple on startup by zapping the PROM, so that doesn't seem to be directly connected to the game of green light tennis I can now play between my caps lock and num lock keys. (My caps lock key is permanently lit and when I try to turn it off, it reduces the volume of my speakers and "types" "rfr" and other such gobbledegook.)

  • Since Firefox 6.0 copying images, by either Win 7 fxn or by screen capture fxn's, no longer works

-- At least, this is the way it seems... a letter I wrote first to the VMN Toobox staff (and to Firefox)...
Hi VMN Staff/Inventor – and Hi to my favorite browser’s staff at Firefox,
I must say that I really love your Screen Capture fxn for the VMN Toobox 4.25! I use it ALL of the time! Hopefully, I have sent you some money already. Tonight however something is really wrong! When I fired up the computer this afternoon and, as usual, was doing research for my office, some webpage logos wouldn't copy, so as usual I dropped down the VMN Toolbox selections, selected Screen Capture and arranged the capture bars over the image, got the yellow flash-across the selected area and pasted the picture in to the document. I looked and looked, reshot the image several times but unbelievably … THE SCREEN CAPTURE IMAGE on the document WAS BLANK!
This NEVER occurred before. And, even after restarting the computer it still did not work.
Then I happened to be in a document where VMN screen capture images had been added - they were ALL blank! Checking other documents - all screenshot images in all documents are blank, totally whited out, with the black lines of where the images used to be right there, emphasizing that something is gone. Like a painting stolen from a museum wall and the photon shadow is all that remains.
I had not used Awesome Screenshot for quite a while, but there it was up on my toolbar - tried that - same damn thing! What's going on? I am pretty certain I let Mozilla FireFox go ahead and update from v5.x to v6.0 as soon as I signed on, and several add-ons were suddenly "no longer compatible," but as far as I can tell your software doesn't rely on any plug-ins. The Awesome Screenshot extension add-on for Firefox was still enabled, yet it did not work.
Further troubleshooting - as I was at my desktop on the network in the office, I then fired up my laptop. This time I DID NOT allow Mozilla Firefox to update from v5.x to 6.0. The VMN toolbox screenshot worked fine! Uh, oh Firefox…?
So, I will be sending this message to Firefox also - I detest Microsoft, only use their software at all only because I HAVE to, I almost never use IE v8.x or 9.x or wherever it is now - but can your people at VMN (and y'all at Firefox) explain how the only browser I use, Firefox, could possibly reach in to my documents file and cause the screenshots downloaded to the clipboard, then to documents, to suddenly no longer be able to be seen? Is this even possible?
Lastly, maybe you know something about this - is there any way to actually "see" the clipboard - what's on it at any given time? I cannot find any way to access either file names or images existing on the clipboard no matter how much is on it, or what program I'm using. (An IT level/web developer person I am not, just a physician.)
I have Windows 7 Professional on my desktop, 4GB RAM, the network/server can only use a 32-bit system type, and everything is highly maintenanced by myself and our IT team, so absolutely everything else is fine. On my laptop I have a Windows 7 Home Premium OS installed and working fine on a brand new HP Pavilion g4 Notebook PC w/ 4GB RAM, 64-bit system type.
Any time to send me any ideas? Thanks. And you too, Firefox - what's going on?

  • How to Get Proper Video Screen Captures (Screencasts) of Lightroom or Photoshop in Win?

Hello. I would like to get proper screen captures of Lightroom on Win 7/64, showing all screen elements as you see them. I tried FastStone Capture 8 and SnagIt 11.1, but they have various differing issues. Do you have a good hint?
In my screen capture, i want a mouse-click-sound each and every time the mouse is clicked. This is not "system audio", because the computer doesn't play a sound for every ordinary click. The capture software must add that sound. (I'm aware i can add the sound manually in post production, but want it recorded together with video.)
Experience with Faststone Capture 8's video captures:
    I get well usable footage
Does optionally record mouse-click-sound for each click, with adjustable volume
Does not properly record some elements of Photoshop or Lightroom screens:
    - cursors sometimes look rough or double-sized
    - Lightrooms "TAT (Target Correction Tool)" disappears while being dragged on the image
    - the color selector box of Lightroom's Adjustment Brush is not shown, while the cursor working within that color selector box is shown
    - Lightroom's three-second-splash-message after Undo etc. is not shown
(All these missing elements do show up in *still* captures with Faststone Capture. They also *do* show up in video captures done with SnagIt.)
Experience with Snagit 11.1's video captures:
Does properly capture all those elements that FastStone does *not* capture (listed above)
Does *not* optionally include a mouse-click-sound for each and every mouse click (they record "system audio", but a sound on every click is not "system audio")
Videos are less smooth, cursor sometimes "jumping"
Now do you know a screen capture software for Win 7 that can
properly record *anything* that's seen within Lightroom and Photoshop
and automatically add a mouse-click-sound for each and every click i do
and produce smooth footage without "jumping cursors"?
    Thanks for your real-life experiences!

Hi, thanks for your suggestions. Now i also tried:
    Camstudio:
    - mouse click sounds very weird (my mistake?), does NOT record LR overlays like adjustment brush's colour selector
    Screen-cast-o-matic, optionally online, free:
    - DOES record overlays like adjustment brush's colour selector. Mouse-click-sound not in free version. "System audio" is promised in paid version, but that does not necessarily mean a sound for each mouse-click. Contacted support for more
Straightforward using, lots of short video tutorials (useful for absolute beginners).
Free downloaded program 1.4 only works on primary monitor, the online launched app also records on secondary monitor
Don't see option to record a "window", only set resolutions
    More "jumpy" than Faststone
More interesting pro-version seems to be rent-only-licenced, at 15 USD per year, not a one-time-buy
    Camtasia:
DOES record overlays like adjustment brush's colour selector
.camrec format isn't offered for recording, only .trec and .avi (on Win 7)
Exported MP4 looks blurry and has colour blotches, that are not visible in the initial recording, only after exporting; this doesn't change at all after setting very high quality MP4 options; i guess i didn't look properly

They also *do* show up in video captures done with SnagIt, see below)
Experience with Snagit 11.1's video captures:
Does properly capture all those elements that FastStone does *not* capture (listed above)
Does *not* optionally include a mouse-click-sound for each and every mouse click (they record "system audio", but a sound on every click is not "system audio", so a regular click on a menu item has no sound)
Videos are less smooth, cursor sometimes "jumping"
Now, do you know a screen capture software for Win 7 that can
properly record *anything* that's seen within Lightroom and Photoshop
and automatically add a mouse-click-sound for each and every click i do
and produce smooth footage without "jumping cursors"?
    Thanks for your real-life experiences!

Myles, thanks again, here are my findings with Camtasia:
    Camtasia:
DOES record overlays like adjustment brush's colour selector
.camrec format isn't offered for recording, only .trec and .avi (on Win 7), but trec is usable just as .camrec i guess
Exported MP4 looks blurry and has colour blotches, that are not visible in the initial recording, only after exporting; this doesn't change at all after setting very high quality MP4 options; i guess i didn't look properly
i see how to add mouse-click sounds; i don't like the sound they provide so much; maybe it can be exchanged.
    Other tests:
    Camstudio:
mouse click sounds very weird (my mistake?)
does NOT record LR overlays like adjustment brush's colour selector
    Screen-cast-o-matic, optionally online, free version:
DOES record overlays like adjustment brush's colour selector.
