Fuzzy screen, strange colours, and startup freeze

Hello there.
This issue might have been covered, but I have not found a thread with it specifically.
The thing is, I have an first generation Imac G5, with 17 inches screen and 1.8 Ghz. It has Leopard with the latest patches. The serial number was in the range of the repair extention program (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2390?viewlocale=en_US) so I got it repared for that issue over a year ago. There was no video gliches, but it just refused to power up. They really had a hard time making in work at the shop I went to in Montréal. I think they said the first power supply they instelled grilled, and they also had to change the mother board. But at last it was ok and worked for a year.
But small video glitches (with strange random colour lines)and kernel panics started to became more frequent until finally, the thing froze on mid startup.
After a night's sleep it started all right with a bit of screen oddities but froze two minutes after when a program was started. It starts all right in safe mode, but more screen oddities become apparent over time and after a while it dies painfully in an abstract graphic figures drug addict vision style nightmare. I have tried all the basic reset stuff without sucess.
At apple they say repair it at your own expanse and bugger off... lol. But I'm really being poor student budget here! So basically, I want to identify the problem's origins, know if I can sort it out myself and how... If not, how much would it cost to repair the damned beauty. It would be a shame to end the love-hate relationship we share, and I might be old-school but I like keeping my comps more than 3 years.
Thanks in advance for all your answers ladies, gents and geeks.
Antoine

Welcome to Discussions Antoine - you may be having a problem with your video RAM, or with your power supply or logic board. Try starting from your install disk and run Disk Utility:
Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

  • My sons Ipod touch would start charging and then the screen turns white and it freezes.  I am trying to figure out how to reset it, but it is not letting me.

My son's ipod touch is not charging because the screen turns white and it freezes up.  Trying to reset it and figure out the problem but don't kno what to do.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My screen goes black and computer freezes.  I know this is a software based problem.  Any suggestions?

About a month ago I installed an Intego software package on my computer.  After it was installed my computer began to randomly freeze.  The freezing would start with the screen going black and then fans spinning up.  Closing the screen didn't help.  Only rebooting did.  I took my Macbook to a repair service and they said that the hardware was perfectly fine.  They recommended a full wipe and reinstall.  I have since uninstalled Intego and for about a week my computer seemed fine.  Since then, however it has started acting up again.  I'm thinking about doing the wipe and reinstall of ML but am hesistant.  Any suggestions what I can do to avoid that?

    Hello nattygrimm,
I was looking into the issue you are describing and found a great resource to try and fix the issue without having to re install the OS. It is an article called Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199.
    I recommend starting here:
The first and easiest test to try is to see if the issue affects a different user account on your Mac. Each user account has customized preferences and other items stored in its home directory. You'll first need to create an additional user if one does not already exist (follow steps a-h below). Then, log out of the current user and test the issue in the new user account.
If this resolves the issue, there may be an issue with a file in the home directory of the original user account.
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Accounts (or choose Users if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Click "+" (or click New User if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Give the new user a name and short name.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click the Password tab, and give the user a password.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click Security.
Select the checkbox for "Allow user to administer this computer". This makes the user account an administrator.
Click OK, or quit System Preferences.
Work your way down the article as needed.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • My macbook pro suddenly freezes; screen turns off and computer freezes.  Have to hard restart.  Error message appears upon restart, saying something about kernel, etc.  Can anyone please help on this issue?

For the past month or more I've encountered what I consider to be quite a serios problem with my Macbook pro.  The laptop suddenly freezes without warning, the screen turns black, while the hard drive apparently stals and the system no longer responds.  The only way to resolve this issues is to restart the computer via a hard reset.  After restarting, an error message box shows up asking me to report the error, which I've already done on numerous occassions.  The problem occurs at a frequency of 1 every 2-3 days, sometimes more often than that.  The error message that comes up is very complicated but contains some key words amongst which includes "kernel."  This makes me believe that it's an issue with the video card, and was wondering how I can remediate this problem so as to get the normal function of my laptop back.  If anyone can be of any help, I would greatly appreciate it.

  • IMac 17' screen - has lines and is freezing help!

I have a IMac 17' - My screen has lines across it and sometimes a triangle- If for some reason I'm able to get it to work past the users choice screen, it freezes within mins. Does anyone know how to fix or what the issue might be?

It's probably a bad video card or bad caps (the little soda cans) which are either swollen or leaking.  If your machine isn't an iSight, take the back off and inspect the caps.

  • What can I do about my FaceTime screen turning green and then freezing?

My screen for facetime freezes and then turns green

I (& my brother) have the same issue when facetiming my sister. She's got an iphone 4s (updated to the current iOS) & my brother & I have iphone 4. The call connects, we see her for a couple of seconds, then it goes all blocky & green screens & drops the call. My brother has also tried on his ipad & gets the same issue, only it reboots the ipad (but it doesn't seem to do that with our phones).
Have had a quick look online but haven't found anything.... only a video that someone posted (which shows what I've described above!)

If anyone has any ideas.... I'd be greatful (& so would others I'm guessing)
    Cheers
Edit: (also, videos & pictures outside of facetime are fine!)

  • Strange colour and words distorted

    Awrite
I've been getting updates for itunes and it says i'm running the latest version(8.0.1). Don't know if there is something wrong with it and highly doubt there is but the colour behind my songs and any other list i view, also the list where you connect your ipod, the colour is strange too, blocking out words with a gray dark colour. Also the panel on the left hand side with Music, Movies, TV Shows etc going downwards is distorted, not the list but the Heading for it e.g. Library, Store and Playlists are distorted.
Is this something to do with my itunes or something up with the way my computer is displaying things now?
Every other programme i run on my computer is displaying fine, should i maybe download itunes again to see if it fixes the problem?
Cheers to anyone that gives me a wee hand.

  • Strange Battery and Startup goings on!

    Hi
Ive got an old G4 667mhz laptop running 10.3.9. Recently Ive been experiencing some strange battery behaviour. I seem to get low battery warnings even though the % shows its above 50%. The most noticeable glitch is that I'm often unable to boot up the laptop without it being plugged into the mains - unless the battery has been recently charged.
I'm guessing (hoping) its a battery problem - although I guess buying a new battery will probably be the same cost as the whole machine
    many thanks for your help
and a happy new year to you all!

The battery level indicator can get out of whack sometimes I have heard, this I was told happens more if you don't run the battery charge down all the way and just run to half and recharge, run to half and recharge.
Try running the battery all the way down and charging it up a few times. Sometimes it helps things.
That said its possible that your battery is just getting into its latter days and is nearing the end of its service life. (If this becomes the case remember to properly dispose of the battery when its done please)
Some after-market batteries will also give you longer running times then the Apple ones now.
Also this is the G4 PowerMac forum you will probably get more PowerBook related help in the Power Book Forum

Hello there, DJ ROb E Rob.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great recommendations for troubleshooting the gray screen at startup:

Wow!  I think I had this same issue just last night.
I was cleaning my macbook pro retina on the outside.  Then I opened it up and was wiping dust off the monitor and I can't pinpoint exactly when, but the colors changed suddenly.  It looked super strange, it was like green halo's and it looked worse when looking at it at an angle.  Of course I took no pictures!!!  I was freaking out that my 2 grand laptop was busted and I somehow removed a protective film or something.
But I digress...  The image looked very green and spacey, it was almost a neat effect.  After about 5 minutes it started to look a little more digital though.  There were straight lines of this halo effect on the edges and top.  After about 10 minutes it turned into a predominate issue with the blacks on screen.  I could open a web browser and it was unnoticable on a white background.  After about 15 minutes, you could only barely see the green cloud effect if you looked at the monitor from an extreme angle.  After about 20 minutes, it was completely back to normal, I almost feel paranoid like I see a halo or something strange.  But I believe that might be all in my head now.
So yerp, lemme know what you guys figure out.

  • After startup screen goes multi-coloured and then restarts.

I started up my mac pro into windows today, a few seconds after it had loaded my desktop the screen went multi-coloured and then it force re-booted.
Anyone know what could be causing this? Will booting in safe-mode help, if so how can this be done on a mac?
    Thanks in advance.

This is only happening for bootcamp, my OSX partition is working fine.
It could be a graphics driver issue, or a hardware issue.  I can't say for sure without access to more information.  I would suggest performing full diagnostics testing, and if you are still under Apple Care, schedule an appointment for a Genius Bar and have them run some tests.  If you are no longer under warranty, they should still run the tests for free, but you would have to pay for any repairs.

  • Follow up to frozen mac... strange colours on screen?

hi everybody.... my screen has just had a funny turn.
red and electric blue appeared replacing some of the colours of the images i was looking at... (black being replaced in part)
web page, then screen saver, then iphoto... checked display in preferences... clicked again on imac and it went away. my question is this the start of my display or graphics chip failing??
and could this also be related to my screen locking up... freezing. I been getting "ghost" blocks of pixels... sometimes from a open web page or folder icon coming thro' or replacing part of a image. hard to discribe... its almost like the display remebers another part of the screen.
any tests that I could do to see if its the graphic side of things or is a visit to the Aple store.
    any ideas ...
    thanks
    mark

    Thanks for the suggestion srojtas.
The eMac has been running fine since posting this and completely passed the Remember memory test. I also tested it by filling the memory up by opening many apps and it didn't crash at all there either.
The eMac didn't come with a hardware CD sadly, so I can't test it that way!
I feel now it must have all been due to me not seating the memory correctly.

  • Issues: extremely slow start up, occasional green fuzzy screen, doesn't always hibernate and overheats

First off, I should say that I'm not the type of person to shutdown my computer. If anything, I shut it to hiberate. I'm not sure if that's bad pratice or if that's what lead to this over time.. So here's what happens.. Today, I was working away and all of a sudden a fuzzy screen comes up with a little bit of green and then a beeping sound. So I shut it off. This is rare, sometimes the fuzzy screen comes up for a second randomly or when I open my computer from hiberate mode or when I'm just using the computer.
When I turn my computer on,
    1. sometimes the 'on' button doesn't work and it takes a few tries (however this hasn't happened in the past few weeks. *knock on wood*)
Once the computer is on the blue screen comes up:
    2. which stays on for anywhere from 5-20 minutes.
    3. Log in appears with the cursor blinking but I actually can't type anything.. It lags behind sometimes another 20 minutes before my password appears and I could log on.
Checking the message board for similar questions it was recommended that I update the software.
I've tried to get Mavericks on here but I get an error message when it tries to restart the computer and never does so successfully on its own.
I've helped it along and was able to attempt at installing it but I waited a least an hour for it to 'find my disks' with no luck I went the disk utility repair route istead of time machine backup which couldn't find my external or anything for that matter.
The error message I got back was:
invalid block count It should be 21066078 instead of 21066076. Found corrupt needs to be repaired.
Any thoughts or advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Below is my EtreCheck.

    Simska,
regarding the overheating, you can try resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller.
Regarding the invalid block count, you should boot from your grey Mac OS X Install DVD which originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro, run Disk Utility from it (via the Utilities menu in the menu bar), and select Repair Disk for your internal disk.
After your disk is repaired, exit Disk Utility and restart from your internal disk. When you log in, you should uninstall your installed version of iPhoto Photocast — it was written to work with the Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) SDK, but you have Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.8) installed, so it’s not supported under Snow Leopard. Install in its place an older version of iPhoto Photocast which is compatible with Snow Leopard. You also have an outdated version of Silverlight installed — you can download the most recent version from here.
