FW 800 Card kills FW bus on G4

I tried to install an Allegro Firewire 800 card from Sonnet into my G4 1GHz Dual Processor G4. I put the card in, connected my firewire drive and got the following outcome.
1. When I re-booted, the computer hung at the blue screen that comes right after the gray screen. It stayed there for a very long time 5+ minutes but finally got through it.
2.When I logged on I found that the firewire ports on the Sonnet card AND also the native FW 400 ports no longer worked.
3.I removed the card, rebooted, and the machine still hung at the blue screen for a long time. It finally got through it, but the FW ports were still dead.
4. I worked for almost two hours, rebooting, trying to reset the PRAM, although I just got a black screen and no "restart" as is the usual case.
5. Finally, I unpluggd the machine completely and re-booted one last time and magically, the native FW ports started to work. So now I am back where I started.
Any ideas what is going on here? Should I try to install the card again? I am thinking that it was a mistake to hook the drive up before the machine had a chance to recognize the card, so I am tempted to try again that way, but I am afraid of getting the same results. Or should I just throw the card in the trash basket, call it a $50 loss or be content with FW 400?

I want to add another firewire 800 bus since I have the AJAHD hooked to the existing bus.
So I went to Fry's and got the "PCI-express firewire 800/1394b controller card 3 ports".
put it into one of the empty slots, rebooted, and got nothing, just some dull chimes, that don't stop.
it fit within my macpro, but it was a lot shorter than the SATA card, that had no problems.
So I guess I need to know exactly what type of firewire 800 card to I have to get.

I installed 1 of these in an 8 core OS 10.4.11 FCp 6.0.2 QT 7.3.1 dedicated to io HD
don't recall a driver disk for mac, however I rarely if ever use the supplied driver disk for anything anymore 'cause it's almost always out of date. go to mfg site and get drivers etc.

by the way it worked great. needs a 1 lane slot. you'll need to check expansion slot utility. typically goes in slot above gfx card or slot4 (top) slot

  • Is it possible to record data directly from PXI-5112 scope card through PXI bus to SCSI RAID array (connected to PXI-8210)?

    Colleagues,
Is it possible to record data directly from PXI-5112 scope card through PXI bus to SCSI RAID array (connected to PXI-8210)?
Which will be the maximum transfer rate for continuous data recording?
    Thank you,
    Sergey
    Sergey

    Sergey,
The PXI-8210 can connect to any SCSI 2 compliant device. If the RAID controller is SCSI 2 and appears just like a hard drive in the operating system, then you can send data directly to the RAID array. The problem is that the driver for the PXI-5112 does not yet support continuous acquisition. The on-board 16MB or 32MB buffer stores the data until the entire acquisition is completed. Once the acquisition complete, all of the data is transferred from the on-board buffer to the hard drive. After that happens, the NI 5112 is ready for another acquisition.

  • FireWire 800 Card Reader

I just bought 3 Lexar Professional UDMA FireWire® 800 Card Readers. The problem I am having is that they wont work in the 800 port. It cant be the card reader because they are plug and play and not all 3 would be broken. So, either there is a firmware update or something. Please help.
    Thanks

Have you tried using the readers individually, using the long fw800 cable, and not the short connecting ones? I have two of them and the short cable(s) caused some transfer problems in which I lost images. Perhaps because they get bent so much, the stress damaged the short cables somehow.

  • LaCie FW-800 Card and slower slots

    Greetings!
I have a late model 2005 G5 and want to install a LaCie FW-800 card. Given that the fastest slot is in use by the graphics card, will any of the remaining slots impede or otherwise degrade the 800Mbps rate?
Information on the card is located here:

    Thanks!

Even 1x PCIe is faster than FW800's 800 mbit bandwidth.

Not sure if this is the best forum to be posting this, but I was wondering if anyone out there can recommend a great FireWire 800 card. I would like it to have as many FireWire 800 and USB ports as possible. The last one I tried to purchase was not actually compatible with my particular system. Check out below for my system details.

how about something like [this_|http://www.partsdata.de/Firewire_800_HUB_Repeater_IEEE1394b_8ports_EX-6684__gbIEEE1394-335.html] instead (for FW 800) ?

  • Sound Blaster Card Kills Driv

Howdy do folk! I have a Sound Blaster PCI 28 CT: 4700 Sound card In my computer. I also have an Matrox MGA G200 Video Card in my computer. For some odd reason, the sound card kills the drivers for the video card. Everything was working great till I put the sound card in.. Then the screen came up fuzzy with whacky colors everywhere and I had to restart in safe mode and go to System to uninstal the video card, restart, and reinstall the video card. Everything works when I do this, but everytime I shut down my computer I have to do it. If I remove the sound card everything works fine. I've tried reinstalling the drivers for the video card and the sound card... No changes.. Anybody have a clue as to what could be wrong?
    Thanks
    Darryl

    Darryl,
Could be due to IRQ conflict. Have you try moving to another PCI slot.

  • Is firewire 400 and 800 on the same bus?

I have heard of the problems putting a camera and external hard drive on the same bus for capturing video. Does the 400 and 800 ports share the same bus and will using both with one connected to an external 800 drive and the 400 port for the camera be a good solution for capturing video?
    Much appreciated.

yes, on PowerBooks w/1394a and 1394b ports, and on the G5's with 1394a and 1394b ports, they all share a common bus
sometimes if you have a lot of activity on the bus, you might have some frame drop out with a camera connected (but this is not a constant)
it never hurts to add a PCI card or cardbus card for PowerBooks and create a second FireWire channel that is independent of the builtin ports

  • FW 400/800 share the same bus?

On the 17" powerbook 1.67GHz, do the FW 400 and the FW 800 ports share the same bus?

Hi. Confirming what I just read... If I get a seperate firewire card for my lap top then my mac will read it as a different port and therefore I can operate at 400 firewire from my firewire card and operate at 800 firewire on the internal port?? Just confirming that if I have two seperate (the external card and the internal ports) that the mac will read them differnetly and thus not slow speeds to the 400 speed universally??
Did that question make sense?! Thanks!

  • Which audio cards can be bus powered using the Thunderbolt to firewire adapter ?

    Hi
I was surprised to hear that the new TB to FW adapter let pass only 7W maximum, when the official Firewire specifies 7W _minimum_. On paper this means that my RME FireFace400, for example, can't be bus powered any more since it needs 13 w.
I think a list of TB > FW adapter compatible audio cards would be useful for all potential MB Air and MBP Retina users who are not ready to carry external batteries all the time

Using the Ultralite with FW-TB adapter here without issue... with or withou external power.. though admittedly i use with with an external power supply 90% of the time.
So, check the adaptor itself.. Some of them have been reported as having loose connections.. when plugged into the Mac... so shut down your MBP (Important to do this.. don't just restart it or put it to sleep) take the adaptor itself out of the back of the Mac... and reinsert. Wait at least 2 minutes (Also important..)  and then start Mac up and it should reset and be back to normal operation.
If that doesn't work.. try doing a full PRAM reset too...

No idea about Win 8 because i don't use it... but it does work fine with Win 7 and the correct drivers... Just make sure you install/update to the latest Boot Camp (Don't even think about trying to use Audio stuff via any of the Windows emulators/virual rigs....such as VMware Fusion for example.. You are asking for lots of trouble trying that...) and it's drivers.. for the FW to TB adapter to be properly recognised by Win 7...

  • Can I use two RS-485 cards over one bus?

I have two PC's with a PCI-485 card each, controlling several FieldPoint modules. I want to implement some sort of redundancy where the inactive PC takes over the RS-485 if the active server fails.
When connecting the RS-485 line in parallel, I get an error accessing the FieldPoint devices.
Is there a known way of havinf two RS-485 controllers in the same line, or do I have to implemement some kind of switching to isolate the two controllers?

If you are using NI's PCI-485, then you can setup a system like you described by setting both system's RS-485 ports to 2-Wire Auto. In this mode, the port will only drive transmit when it has data to send. Then your inactive PC watches for activity from the active server (either via the RS-485 port or some other mechanism like a network ping), and takes over when the active server goes down.
By setting the transceivers to Auto mode and making sure the inactive server doesn't transmit unless it knows the active server is dead, you won't double-drive the bus.
Note that 2-Wire auto turns OFF the receiver when transmitting (for 2-Wire communication). Even though you may be using 4-Wire cabling, this could impact your communication. If this is th
e case, you could use 2-Wire DTE w/Echo which uses the DTR modem line (you have to assert/deassert this manually) to control TX Enable, but RX Enable is always asserted.

  • Setting parameters for synching pci-6534 cards via RTSI bus

    I have been performing high-speed,
buffered, looping output with one pci-6534 card.  I am now adding
a second 6534 card that I need to sync to the first card via the RTSI
bus.  I have successfully used the RTSI bus to see the master REQ1
and ACK1 signals on those channels of the slave (seen at a connector
block), using the "RTSI control" vi.  I simply set the master and
slave as transmitter and receiver, respectively, over the RTSI bus.
The question is: Once I have used the RTSI control vi to share the
necessary signals, do I need to do anything in my "dio config," "dio
write," or "dio start" vi's in the looping output code for the 2nd 6534
card to let it know that its REQ, ACK, STPTRG, and CLK signals are
coming from the bus?  For example, in the buffered pattern looping
output vi, the "dio start" vi has choices of "internal" or "RTSI
connection" for its clock.  My master board's code simply uses the
internal.  Does my slave need to be set to RTSI connection, or,
once I have shared the clock signal over the RTSI bus, is that
effectively the internal clock for my slave too?
I apologize it this question is confusing.  Unfortunately, so is the issue.

    Hello bwz,
When you are performing synchronization across the RTSI bus you need to specify that the slave device should get its clock signals from there.  You would use the digital clock config VI to do this.  If you look in the example finder, you will find synchronization example VIs that do the same kind of thing for analog input.  To find the examples, open the example finder by going to Help >> Find Examples >> Hardware Input and Output >> Traditional DAQ >> Multiple Device.
If you are just getting started developing your application, you may want to consider using DAQmx.  There are many more examples available to look at for this type of synchronization.  To find these examples in the example finder go to Hardware Input and Output >> DAQmx >> Synchronization >> Multi-Device.  To use your PCI-6534 with NI-DAQmx, you must have version 7.4 or later.  The newest version is DAQmx 7.5.  You may also want to look at this tutorial about synchronization with DAQmx.
    I hope this helps!

  • Adding PCI : USB2 / FW400 / FW 800 Cards

Hello I need some more kind advice and expertise please !
I have now found the need to expand and add a couple more USB2 / FW400 / FW 800 ports to my Mac which has PCI slots !
Are certain generic brands of PCI card of higher quality than others ? ie : Sonnet or Lacie, etc ?
Which would be the best way to stack the cards ie: is there any preferred slot placement for certain cards ?
    Many thanks in advance

I have a similar problem. The Firewire inputs to my recently purchased, second user, G5 do not function. I have a PCI card on a Windows PC, can I try this, or are they totally incompatible.

  • PCIExpress F/W card for 2nd bus on MBP - Anyone having success?

    Hi,
I read in another post that this is 'the usual way' to be able to get both an external drive and a Canon camcorder connected at the same time.
In principle it makes sense, but I don't see any such cards in the Applestore, although there are a few that claim to work on Ebay.....
    Is anyone doing this successfully?
    Any specific card recommendations?
    Any other insights?
    Thanks in advance,

The FW ports on the display are just extensions of
the FW port on your MBP, they are not a separate

    Bummer
I'm about to buy one of the Weibetech cards. It's
about the only one out there that supports FW800. Of
the FW400 cards, I'd go for SIIG or Griffin.
You've had success with these when using a "recalcitrant" Canon Camcorder?
    In an MBPro?
Apologies for being somewhat pedantic here, but my pile of H/W that should have worked is larger than it should be.....
    Thanks for the comments,
