FW  800 screen goes dark after startup

My 1.25 GHz FW 800 15" Powerbook is having startup problems similar to some things I've found here but not identical to any of them.
It boots normally to the Finder but, after about 1 minute, the trackpad and cursor stop responding and then the display goes dark and the machine goes into what seems to be a low power sleep mode -- Caps Lock light still on but display will not illuminate if keys are pressed. Machine won't wake and must be rebooted.
This happens while connected to a 65 W power adapter and with or without a battery in place. (Tested with 2 different power adapters.) Power lights on the battery indicate full charge. Connector ring shows normal green status.
If I boot from a DVD, the machine runs indefinitely without shutting down but the keyboard and trackpad don't respond and I have to use an external keyboard and mouse (both of which work normally). The fact that it runs indefinitely seems to differ from the known temperature sensor failure; the fact that the trackpad and keyboard don't work in this mode may still point to a top case problem, though.
Based on these symptoms, I assumed that I needed to replace the PRAM battery (backup battery). Unfortunately, even after carefully replacing the battery and letting it charge while connected to the power adapter for several days, the same symptoms persist. (Tested with 2 different replacement PRAM batteries although one of them may have been worn out.)
Resetting the PMU has not changed anything. Resetting PRAM has not changed anything.
This has happened in both OS 10.4 and and a fresh install of 10.4.8. Apple Service Diagnostics found no hardware problems when run for multiple cycles.
I'd appreciate any diagnoses or suggestions for repairs.
thanks,
pat

adamgritz,
I'm quoting myself from an earlier post...
"This behavior on the Wallstreet running any version of OSX is normal •IF• you have no working main battery and you also disconnect the power adapter. Once all power is lost to the power manager, OSX somehow modifies the power manager in a way that causes backlight issues. Booting back into 9.x cures the problem; in addition, this issue does not occur with 9.x and loss of power, only OSX. As long as the power manager is maintained via a charged main battery and/or power adapter, this "fix" will stick. The PRAM battery (internal rechargeable backup battery) can maintain the power manager for a few hours if fully charged (and working) without any other source of power but your 10 year old Wallstreet probably has a dead or weak battery...these powerbooks will run without a PRAM battery."
In addition, if you do not have 9.x installed, any bootable non-OSX CD will solve the problem.

  • 6288 - screen goes dark after 15 seconds

    Hi
Have just purchased a 6288. Screen goes dark after 10 - 15 seconds if you don't touch the keypad - very annoying if reading a message. Have turned Power saver and sleep mode off, but screen still goes dark. Does anyone know how to stop it from doing this?
    Thanks

Yes it is quite annoying. The screen saver time out does little to remedy this. A way around it that I use is to reassign the navikeys. you can dictate what each button does :go to menu > settings > my shortcuts > navigation key. my up goes to contacts, left goes to new message, right goes to music player and down does nothing. so every time the screen goes black, I just hit the down key to turn it back on.

  • Screen goes dark after dialing

When I place a call using my contacts or my keypad, the screen goes dark after hitting the green "send" button.  It stays dark until I hang up.  How do I get the screen light to stay on when I place a call?

This phone has a sensor if you put the phone to your face or even put your hand over to near the top of the screen it will go dark. There is a sensor to prevent false activation of the touch screen.
I found when my phone is working on the car adabter it goes dark rather fast when I make a call. I use a Bluetooth earphone most of the time with this phone.  I don't feel comfortable holding it to my ear.
If I see the screen go dark and I need access, I simply run my finger up from the bottom of the screen to bring it back to life.
I am going to look in to this part of the phones operation a little more closely to see if there is anything else I can bring up about this...

  • My macbook 3.1 screen goes dark after a period of use; but if i readjust the screen (close it to about a 30 degree angle) the screen light is on again

my macbook 3.1 screen goes dark after a period of use; but if i readjust the screen (close it to about a 30 degree angle) the screen light is on again.  i don't have an external monitor, so i just deal with it.  i'm about done dealing with it and am wondering if anyone else had/has this problem, and how did you solve it?

You have a hardware problem. It needs to be fixed.
Contact Apple using www.apple.com/support/contact if you are in a country that supports it or call the appropriate phone number on this page. Alternatively carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store or service provider to ask for an estimate.

  • 700P Sprint Update 1.10 - Screen goes dark after sync

I updated my Sprint 700P yesterday to V1.10 Palm software.  All seemed to go well with the update, until I tried to restore my data with a HotSync.
The sync seems to go  normally, but at the end, it says a "reset is necessary"...after the reset, the screen goes dark right after the Palm logo appears.  The phone seems to be still working.....just no visible screen.
I spent hours on this yesterday....now have no working phone.....very frustrated.

Post relates to: Treo 700p (Sprint)

    Yes
i just replaced my 700p due to this issue and return home to find that nothing has been resolved.
It turns out that the update is rather seriously flawed. There is no way to revert the update so, Verizon (after checking with Palm) replaced my Treo and suggested that I not run the update again.
Now the sync issue that you describe.
There appears to be files associated with your treo on the Palm software on your desktop that are set for installation. This was due to the update i believe. These files: specifically those associated with AudibleAir.pdb are creating havoc during the sync.
The Work-around that Palm suggested to me which appears to work (on the new phone with the original ROM) is as follows:
    1) Hard Reset the Treo
    2) Re-sync the treo
!> When it asks you to choose the correct id, DO NOT DO SO!!!
    3) Create a new ID for the treo and continue the sync.
This way these bad files are no longer set for installation because you are not using the same account as when you ran the update utility.
I would be interested to know if this works with a Treo 700p with the new ROMs installed.
My method requires the old ROMS and Palm in its infinite wisdom has not created any means of rolling back to the old ones. Thus a catastrophic update.

  • Screen goes dark after latest update

Screen goes dark, but you can still make out widgets faintly in background

If you can make out the screen enough, go to Settings > Brightness and turn it up. If you can't see or it is turned up, try resetting:
Hold the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple boot logo appears. No data will be lost.

  • T41 screen goes dark after one second while powering up

T41 2379-DKU running XP Pro. I power on the machine, the screen lights up with the logo for a second and goes totally dark, but I can still very dimly see the logo on the screen with room lighting.
I replaced the motherboard a year ago for the "flex" failure. Was working fine prior to this, no pink in whites, clear, accurate color rendition. What is broken? Inverter? Backlight?, none of the above?

The inverter that powers your display backlight is failing and needs to be replaced.

  • Screen goes dark after opening

Late Model 2010 Macbook pro, opening screen from closed position allows the screen to turn on as normal, but two seconds later, goes to complete black. Temporary fix includes hitting F1 to lower brightenss (if the screen was at full brightness) or F1 or F2 (if screen was not at full brightness) changing this brightness level brings back screen to full brightness -1. this problem seems to be pretty prevelent and related to the nvidia card ro something simialr. are there any known fixes? will apple acknowlege this. this just started happening to me a week or so ago but i've seen articles are far back as early 2011 with the same symptoms.

The below linked article may have helpful information about the problem.

  • IBooks screen goes dark while reading

When reading in iBooks or Kindle, screen goes dark after 1/2 page or so. Any ideas?

    Hello there, tiamark.
The following page from the iPad User's Guide refers to the Auto-lock feature. You may want to increase the auto-lock time frame, in order for the iPad not to shut down while you are reading your books:
Sleep/Wake button - iPad User Guide
    http://help.apple.com/ipad/7/#/iPad9940ef67
Set the auto-lock time. Go to Settings > General > Auto-Lock.

  • MBP retina: wifi drops out when screen goes dark

    Hi there,
I've got a MBPr 15inch with the latest OSX version (incl. updates).
When my screen goes dark after 10 minutes of inactivity, my WIFI connection *always* drops out. So if I'm syncing something over Dropbox for instance, it will stop working. I basically have to make sure my laptop never goes inactive for too long. This is really annoying and one of a few other problems I'm having with this MBPr.
I've searched these forums, and there are people with similar or related problems but I couldn't find any solution yet.
Anyone else out there similar problems?
    Thanks,
    Kai

Hi f, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like it could be a bad inverter board, but I don't know if that would cause it to happen only while using the power adapter. Depending on your exact model, it could be:

  • Screen Goes Black During Startup (after login)

    Hello,
I have a 2005 Mac Mini PPC OS 10.4.11. This is the first problem I've had since purchasing the computer. This problem popped up out of nowhere. The screen goes black during startup just after I login into my account. I can hear the hard drive spin like it is finishing the startup process. The monitor power button blinks green.
I'm using the digital video cable. I tried switching to the VGA cable but the screen then goes black before the login screen.
The computer will startup in Safe mode.
I've tried Disk Utility (repair disk and repair permissions), Techtool Pro, Drive Genius, ColorSync Utility, Reset Pram, installed latest OS updates, and even re-installed the System twice (once because I removed all the Extension files and then the computer would not startup at all).
I've also tried removing cache files, plist files, startup files, preference files, and some or all of extension files.
The only applications I have recently installed were QuickTime Pro and a .flv movie player; both about a week before this problem started. I tried to uninstall them but could not figure out how.
What is the problem? How can this be fixed?
    Thanks.
    Richard

Howdy. I have Had the same problem as you in regards to a ViewSonic Monitor and the Mac Mini. This is my post:
    Monitor failure when switching resolutions
Using Displays with the Mac mini, Apr 1, 2008, Replies: 2
Running 10.5.2 on Mac Mini G4 1.42 Ghz with ATI Radeon 9200, 32 MB VRAM and ViewSonic VX922
When switching resolutions from 1280x1024 to 800x600 or vice versa, the monitor will cut to black and the power light on the monitor switches from solid green to flashing green. Only by combinations of powering down the mini and starting it up again with the monitor on or off will bring the monitor back to life. This problem makes it difficult to play World of Warcraft amongst other games. Any feedback in regards to this problem would be appreciated.
    Thank You!
At this point, I am unable to switch Monitor resolutions. If I do, the monitor goes black, and I have to power everything down and wait a while before I can restart.
I've resigned myself to not switching resolutions, but I'm wondering if you've had any luck.
    Thanks for your time!
    Kevin

  • HI all, i'm using Mac Pro 15" Retina. My screen goes darker and after brighter after a while? How to fix it?

HI all, i'm using Mac Pro 15" Retina. My screen goes darker and after brighter after a while? How to fix it?

    System Preferences > Displays.
    De-select "Automatically adjust brightness"

  • Computer screen goes dark (stops)after latest update.

After my latest update, computer crashes, screen goes dark, using wireless mouse;difficult to restart.
Is it 6.3 or the mouse?

First, Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.
Then, download the 10.6.3 Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
You can install it right over what you already have.

  • When I power up my mac, I see the white screen and the apple icon. After a few seconds of powering up the screen goes dark. Yet I still can the mouse arrow but nothing else.

When I power up my Imac, I see the white screen and the apple icon. After a few seconds the screen goes dark. I am able to still see the mouse arrow as I move it around. But nothing else. What is the problem and how do I recover?

    Try this from another user:
    1. Shut the computer down by holding the power button for 10 seconds
    2. Restart the computer and press shift at the same time until you see the progress bar start moving
    3. Once you reach the point where your screen goes dark and you see the cursor, type the first letter of the username for your computer, then hit Enter, then type your password, then hit Enter.
    4. After a moment, you should see the spinning beach ball
    5. Your screen should then move on to something along the lines of "Completing OSX Installation" (I can't remember the exact wording). Let it finish. After that it should go to your normal desktop and the issue should be fixed. (If your screen goes pitch black during this process, hit the space bar. I thought it wasn't working, but the screen was just sleeping).

  • Hp w2207 screen goes dark once it heats up

I have had my monitor for a number of years now and recently it has been going dark after about 45 minutes of use.  Whether I am playing a game or running an application this happens.  Thought it was the video card originally but have used another monitor with my computer without a problem.
The screen still shows whatever was on it but it is very hard to see to the point of just being able to see the outlines.
I would like to get this fixed as I love the screen, but not willing to pay a fortune to do so.
    Thanks,
    Daniel
