FW Drive + DV Camcorder= ???

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew if you could plug your external firewire drive into your dv camcorder? Can you just use the two components (DV Camera, FW Drive) without the computer in-between?

Looking for the best hard drive digital camcorder!!

I was in the store today and asked a couple sales reps, each giving me their opinions that personally didn't sound like "educated" opinions. I want a hard drive camcorder with 60 GB and that is the "best" meeting that criteria. Should I look at Canon's, Panasonics, JVC, or Sony??? I want it to be super easy to use with ease of DVD creating as well. Battery life should be good also. Vista compatible a must. I would appreciate any "educated" opinions that I can get. Thank you..

1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu one. Set the format type to MS-DOS. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to MBR then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
The drive should be usable on both a PC and a Mac.

Sony hard drive camcorder and mac pro

i have a sony hard drive style camcorder that uses a usb to download to a computer.will the mac pro support this if i use windows on it or is the usb still going to be a hang up?no editing needed,just want to get the movies on my mac instead of a pc.are there any programs that will let me use the usb port?

.would i be able to make it work if i install the program that came with it on the windows side of the mac pro?
you mean, you have bootcamp/parallels/etc on your Mac and want to use a Windows app to handle your camera?.. well, no hands on with Windows nor Bootcamp here...
Windows is a system of many (too many for me... ) options...- which usually needs 'drivers' for any connection to the real world outside the computer.. I mostly doubt, that the usb2 port is supported by a video-edit-app in a Windows app... as mentioned above, the 'computer' has to recognize your device as a harddrive, incl. all the 'protocols' which are needed to 'speak with each other'.. (= all that is implemented in firewire... usb = no standards for that = 'individual drivers'...)
but, why no givin' it a try...?
next problem: you're using Windows to import from your device.. and then? Windows asks for a fat32 formatted drive.. which iM doesn't support ...
besides, there's a 3rd party app for Mac, which supports mpeg2 editing:

How to convert avchd footage when it's on your hard drive in your computer?

hey guys, I have a problem. I have a Sony Hdr-sr7 hard drive avchd camcorder and I can convert the footage to pro res just fine when i plug in my camera via usb. but when I download the avchd files (.mts .mt2s) to my mac hard drive I'm not able to convert then in the L&T window in FCP. Can you help me here? I have never been able to figure it out.

For L&T to recognise the AVCHD files, you need to preserve the full directory structure of the camera when you copy the footage to your Mac i.e. don't just copy across the folder which contains the AVCHD files.
Assuming you have the full directory structure in place on your Mac, point L&T to the top level directory.
There are also alternatives to L&T which don't require the full directory structure to be in place.

Mini-DV Camcorder V. DVD Camcorder?!

I want to buy a camcorder but I'm not sure if it should be a Mini-DV Camcorder or a DVD Camcorder. What would be most compatible with iLife 04 and my computer in general, (statistics below).
I have two in mind: Sony Mini-DV DCRHC24E and the Sony DVD105.

iMovie likes to take take video from the device via iLink (Sony speak) or Firewire (Apple speak). The DCR-DVD105 doesn't have iLink/Firewire so to use that you'd have to insert the DVD in to the iMac and then import to iMovie (you may have to perform some conversion too depending on the format Sony are using).
Should you move up to a new iMac with a slot-loading disk drive the camcorder would become useless as you can't put an 8cm disk in the new iMacs.
Of course the disadvantages of the DCR-HC24E MiniDV version is that tapes of course need re-winding etc. Note that the MiniDV version doesn't have DV in which means you can't archive projects back to tape. I'd advise looking for a model with DVin and DVOut.
You might wish to post in the iMovie forum too as the users there may have further experience.

Importing video to external hard drive

How do I import DV directly to my LaCie external hard drive? I've daisy-chained my camcorder, hard drive, and powerbook via fire wire. I need the most basic step-by-step instructions required to tell the powerbook to send the video directly to the external drive. Apologies in advance. For most of you, this question is sub-moronic.

Re David's comment "..Don't daisy chain the camera.." ..I've never had any trouble when 'daisy-chaining' a (Sony) camcorder through an external drive, except for the first time I tried (..with a LaCie or maybe a Western Digital box..) when it made a big difference which socket the camcorder was in.
It didn't work with the cam in the socket further from the power input to the external drive; it did work perfectly with the cam in the socket nearer the power input. (..Obviously, this doesn't apply if your drive has no separate power supply, but is driven by power from the Mac down the FireWire cable.)
So if it doesn't work with the cables one way round, try swapping the cables/sockets.
This may not work for other people, and maybe not with some drives or camcorders ..but I just thought I'd mention that it's never caused problems for me ..neither with 'name' drives like LaCie, WD, etc, nor with 'no-name' generic hard drive boxes ..as long as they have two FW sockets.
(..Ah: a possible exception; I can't remember if it worked or not with drives which had both FW800 and FW400 connections. Maybe I'll try that again tonight, to see if it does work when using FW800 for the computer-to-drive connection and FW400 for the drive-to-camcorder connection..)

Camcorder Recomendations

Hey everyone I'm getting a new camcorder and I really want a HDD (Hard drive) based camcorder, no miniDV or dvds but I don't really know what kind to get. i was looking at all of the Sony's and they look and sound good, but the only problem is they use some wierd format for their video that doesn't work with FCP. I know you can convert it all but it's a hassle. Do any of you have some good ones, maybe an Everio or a Panasonic?

Forget the SD1 and the SR82/300 as they both use the AVCHD/MPEG-2 formats which will cause you a whole lotta problems trying to edit with in FCP. MPEG-2 is a delivery format not editing and if you manage to get it into your system, probably using MPEG Streamclip and the $20 Apple MPEG-2 playback component, the quality will certainly take a hit - don't bother.
IMHO - AVOID AVCHD/MPEG-2 FORMAT CAMERAS! If in doubt, search this forum for further info.
You're best options are:
1) Minidv (cheap tapes, straightforward editing workflow)
2) HDV - Better quality images but editing difficulties and expensive external monitoring. Search the forum for HDV to check out the workflow and editing difficulties.
So, personally, if you're looking at cameras in the sub $1000 bracket, I'd advise MiniDV. Again the GS500 appears to fit the bill (although it has no headphone jack).
When you say good stabilization, most camcorders have some form of image stabilization or another but none are a substitute for holding it steady to start with - a tripod (even a small one) is a must - I find that with a small camera, doing handheld shots with a tripod or monopod attatched are more stable.

How much better is the quality of picture in a miniDV than an HDD?
Once its been through the editing hoops, the quality from HDD will be noticeably inferior. Directly connecting the cam to your tv you won't notice a difference unless it's hi-def.

Pic and video from camcorder to iphone????

i have a HUD hard disk drive JVC camcorder made by Everio. It syncs directly to my pc using USB. I was wondering is there any way to transfer pic and video from my camcorder to my iphone either direct from camera or from the sync center on my pc for the camera.

There isn't a way to sync directly to the iPhone from your camcorder.
Once you get the pics/movies to your computer, though, it is possible. The movies need to be imported into iTunes and then synced to the phone. As for the pictures, you need to consolidate them into one folder and then from the Photos tab in iTunes (when you click on the iPhone icon on the left menu bar) you select the folder those photos are in to sync to the phone.

Sony - DVDirect 16x External USB 2.0 Double-Layer DVD±RW Drive

I posted this in another subject, but I really need professional opinions. We are getting ready to start our basketball season, and I would like to have video equipment that would record at great quality and could be easily and quickly transferred to a dvd.
My thoughts were to purchase the Sony - DVDirect 16x External USB 2.0 Double-Layer DVD±RW Drive. This seems to allow you to burn from the camera. What is everyone's thoughts on this product and would a Sony - High-Definition DVD Camcorder with 120GB Hard Disk Drive and 2.7" LCD Monitor - Black be a useful purchase with this drive?

It sounds like this drive should work for standard definition footage, but as Entropy stated in your other thread on this issue you are going to want a Blu-ray burner drive for High Definition footage. I also agree with Entropy in that you are better off streaming your video footage to a computer (with a Blu-ray burner drive) than investing in this external drive. When it comes to burning/uploading video footage there is no quick process if you want to retain quality without investing in a computer with a very fast processor (and of course enough RAM).
This camcorder should meet or exceed your expectations, but I am personally partial to flash drive based camcorders. You can store a lot more footage on a hard drive based camcorder, which does mean that you won't have to upload your footage as often, but the less moving parts a camcorder has the longer it will last.

Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 - JVC 20GB Hard Drive Video Camera Difficulties

I am currently using Adobe Premiere Pro CS3. I have a JVC 20 gb hard drive video camcorder that I have currently recorded footage on. I need to either find a way to capture that footage somehow or convert the videos from .MOD files to a supported format for Adobe without the blurry pixelated quality of the video and the lack of sound on certain formats. Supporting JVC HD type Camcorder

I have a JVC Camcorder, GZ-MG26.
A Hard Drive type camcorder.
And movie file are saved as "MOD" type.
not "AVI" or "MOV" type.
I don't know I can easily edit iMovie with my JVC Camcorder.
Please help me!

Hi A Dawg - welcome to the forum!
DVD and HD type camcorders record in MPEG format. This is incompatible with iMovie, which prefers DV format (dv tape-based cams). There are workarounds, but you should be aware that MPEG is not really an editing format, as it is not lossless recording - instead it's intended as a viewing format.
To convert the MPEG to DV you need:
MPEG StreamClip (free):

If it is a just-purchased camera, it may be sensible to swap it for a DV cam.

Camcorder with HD - which one to buy that works with iMovie

I purchased and returned a JVC Everio camcorder with HD because it wasn't compatible with iMovie. I want to get one of the new camcorders with a hardrive instead of a tape because they are so quiet. However, it needs to be compatible with iMovie.
Please advise

Short answer is that there isn't a hard drive based camcorder that is suitable for editing on any platform.
Long Answer: Consumer hard drive based camcorders do NOT record a DV file, they typically record some sort of MPEG file. MPEG was never meant to be edited, while DV was/is. So a tape based solution is still best: miniDV (or full size DV) or HDV- which still records to a miniDV tape. There are some more expensive hard drive attachments that can be hooked to miniDV camcorder offering direct to disc recording (http://www.calumetphoto.com/item/EC7356.html) of a DV file. The devices are usually camera specific. And prices only go up from there although you can find older models on eBay for less.

Camcorder purchase recommendations?

Noob to iMovie...(sorry)
I'm trying to pick out a hard drive-based camcorder for amateur home movie use (new baby on the way). I figure hard-drive is easier to use with the iMac rather than converting from DVDs, etc.
I've noticed that some articles state that you have to connect your hard drive cam corder to the mac using firewire otherwise iMovie won't recognize it. Is that right? And I've heard problems with getting Sony cameras recognized. True?
Any advice is appreciated. Price range is $500-$1000.

Just throwing in my two cents based on past experience. I have a HP point and shoot digital camera that also takes video clips. While it's a nice function to have, you lose the sound when you import the video into iMovie for the reasons Sue mentions.
I just upgraded both my digital camera and digital camcorder, and did quite a bit of research before purchasing. The camcorders that record on DVD do not import into iMovie (at least based on the research I did). I only found one model of digital camcorder that burned directly to hard disc, so was reluctant to even try that format.
As for the digital camcorder, I own a Cannon, but wanted to upgrade to a better camera, so purchased the Panasonic GS 500. It is fabulous. It has optical stabilization and shoots well in low light. The color is excellent and it is by far the best camcorder I've owned to date.
I also purchased a Nikon D80 SLR digital camera and can't tell you how fabulous it is - I feel like I've died and gone to heaven. It shoots 3 frames per second which is fabulous for action shots.
If finances constrain you to one choice, which is probably the case with a new baby on the way, I'd recommend putting your dollars into an excellent digital camera that will last. Having three kiddos, I can tell you the video is great, but it's the pictures we look at more often. You can always borrow a camcorder from a good friend to make sure you have video of all stages, but you need that camera at hand immediately when s/he smiles for the first time . . .

You could get a spiffy little HDV camera to go with that expensive mac and FCP 5.1. Since i imagine you wont be doin much more than making dvds HDV would look great and be perfect for you.
