FW Drives Mounted on Network not Appearing

Hello all:
I have a MacPro with 4 FW drives connected to it via FW 800. My macmini, downstairs (used as a home theater PC) usually connects to those drives in order to stream movies, audio etc (connects via Gigabit Ethernet). Now, since the most recent 10.5.2 update, only 2 of the drives appears. They are daisy chained FW800, all have their own power supply and are all mounted and visible in the MacPro.
It is only when I am on the macmini, when I click on the MPro under Shared in Finder, that some of the FW drives appear and some don't. One of the drives that is visible on the mini is a LaCie Bigger Disk 2TB. The other that does NOT appear is also a LaCie 2TB drive. I also have a smaller LaCie drive that is not visible (mounted via FW400 on a separate bus).
Another point to mention, if I click on an alias to the drive, it tells me: The volume "DRIVE A" could not be mounted. Obviously it works fine on the MP, so this is unusual.
Weird thing is, before the update, I was able to access all the drives on MP via sharing on the macmini via FrontRow and all my movies were available. Now half the library is inaccessible. Any thoughts anyone?

I'm not exactly sure what's happened, but in 10.4.9 configd was apparently put under the control of launchd. Launchd unloads libraries and won't load them again until there's a demand, and apparently those Bonjour events don't kick up a demand.
Okay, that probably sounds like a lot of geekspeak. What it means in practical terms is that you need to go to all your machines, turn of Personal File Sharing, wait a second, and turn it back on. That should do the trick.
I'm still trying to figure out exactly what went wrong, but this should do as a workaround.

  • In Finder Prefs, does unchecking "Show these items on the Desktop" mean certain connected drives won't "mount" at all -- or they WILL mount but simply not appear as Desktop icons?

In the Finder Preferences panel, when one unchecks a category of "items" (e.g. "Hard Disks," or "CDs, DVDs and iPods," etc.), does that mean that items of that type will not even "mount" as a connected external drive when they get plugged in to the computer? Or, alternately, DO these external devices "mount," and can be accessed via various menu commands or keyboard shortcuts, but it's just that they won't appear on the Desktop as a "Desktop icon"?
The terminology used in the Prefs panels makes me think that they DO mount, they just don't "appear" as icons. Otherwise, the Prefs panel would say "Mount these items as connected drives when plugged in."
    Right?
If one unchecks a category, and then connects or inserts a device of that category to the Mac, and then unceremoniously unplugs it from the computer, will one get an error message saying (forget the exact words) "Don't disconnect external drives before first Ejecting them!" Or...not?

If iTunes is already running when I plug in the iPod, then I briefly get the "Connected - Eject before disconnecting" message, but then it goes away after a few seconds, and the iPod screen reverts to the normal home screen, which means I can unplug it without ejecting it.
So the three potential statuses are:
    1. Plug in iPod and never launch iTunes = iPod need to be ejected before disconnecting.
    2. First plug in iPod and subsequently launch iTunes = get unwanted "connected" message until the moment that iTunes is running, at which point it disappears.
    3. First launch iTunes and then plug in iPod = iPod briefly gives "connected" message, but then reverts to home page.
So, it seems that having iTunes open in these settings will (after a brief period at most, or immediately) allow me to unplug the iPod without "Ejecting" it first.
However...I don't want to launch iTunes! The whole point is to just be able to plug in and unplug the iPod without having to fiddle with anything on the Mac. My original problem was that I had to "Eject" the iPod in order to unplug it -- but if the only way to solve that problem is to launch iTunes, then all I've done is replace one problem with another.
I don't want to have to launch iTunes or have it running, now or ever. I just want to recharge my iPod.
So, while we certainly have learned a lot so far (and thanks for your patience!), I don't want to end up with a different problem than the one I started with.
So, the amended question is now:
Is there a way I can simply plug in and unplug my iPod to my Mac for the purposes of recharging only, without having to either "Eject" the iPod from the Mac or having to launch iTunes (manually or automatically)?

  • Network not appearing

I am running OS X server, and after moving the machine to a different place in the studio it no longer sees my local network. If I go to the network pane in the finder, I see Library, My Network, Servers, and Workgroups. Not one of my other macs appears, and I do not have Windows machines on my network.
The server does get an internet connection through my LAN, and is actually serving mail and webpages. I can also check mail and use the web. The machine can also be seen in the other Macs, but they can not connect. I can however command K to other macs from the server by IP.
I have tried ditching different prefs suggested here, but have gotten nowhere. Any help getting my file sharing back would be greatly appreciated.

  • External Drive Mounts on MacBook, not on PowerBook

    Situation:
I own a Powerbook G4, and recently bought a Macbook from a friend, along with a Hitachi Travelstar external hard drive that he used with the Macbook.
When I got the hard drive, I plugged it into my Powerbook and copied some files to and from it, then plugged it into my Macbook and moved some files over to the computer.
I then used the Macbook to format the Hitachi drive.
Now, the drive works perfectly fine with the Macbook, but when I plug it into the Powerbook, it doesn't mount, and makes a slight clicking noise.
I tried plugging it into a different Powerbook, and the same thing happens.
I'm thinking it has something to do with the way the drive was formatted, but I'm not sure of this, and I'd like the advice of you wiser, more experienced users. I'm willing and able to do a reformat of the drive using the Macbook (since I can't format it on the Powerbook), but I need to know what settings I should be using to prevent this from happening again. The drive is intended to be used as a backup media drive, so ownership and permissions shouldn't matter. (I'm not even sure if that's relevant to this problem, but thought I'd mention it anyway)
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
    Joe

If the Powerbook has 10.3.9 or later it shouldn't matter how it was formatted. If it has 10.3.8 or earlier, you have to partition it for Apple Partition Map to be readable on both Intel and PowerPC Mac. Unfortunately as Apple Partition Map, it won't be bootable on an Intel Mac. You can do a dual Apple Partition Map/GUID (the format used by Intel Macs), as documented here:

  • Want to backup my iphoto library to ext. drive, but it does not appear in the picture folder. When I select the picture folder iphoto opens, nothing to drag. Help please? 2013 iMac

I want to back up my iphoto library to my external drive, but can't find it it in my computer's tree. When I click pictures in the tree, it launches iphoto and there is no file name or icon to drag. What am I missing? I'm sure it is simple what ever it is. Help please?

now that you have found your iPhoto library you can drag it to the external drive to backup it up
If you launch iPhoto does it work properly?
However, when I tried to relocate it to the pictures folder, I get a message that I can't add the library because the folder is defective or damaged.
Exactly what are you doing? what is the exact error message?
    And as to
Should I trash the pref file for pictures folder and try again?
I have no idea what you are speaking of - files and folers do not have Pref files - only applications have Pref files

  • I copied my bookmarks from Favorites folder on old computer and pasted them into the same folder, same drive, and they do not appear in the Bookmarks pulldown inside Firefox. Can you help me?

I copied them to a new computer (not clear from my question).

Firefox doesn't use the IE Favorites folder.<br />
Firefox stores the bookmarks in the Firefox Profile Folder

If you no longer have access to that old computer then you can try to import the IE favorites or export the IE favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in Firefox.

  • DVD drive does not appear on the "Computer" drive screen

I have lost access to the DVD drive. It does not appear on the "Computer" drive screen.
It will start up with a disk inserted but shuts down after a approx 20 seconds without having opened any files.
The DVD light comes on when it first starts up and then goes off within a few seconds.
I have re-installed the Toshiba driver and still no access.
I believe it started when I installed a new WD 1Tb external drive which setup its virtual CD drive on the E: drive which was used by the DVD drive. I have moved the external drive to G: and left the E: drive letter vacant but still not working.
Any ideas how I can solve this? It would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this will help you but check it anyway

  • Deleted Items from External HD Not Appearing in Trash

I have an iomega external hard drive and have had recent issues trying to trash deleted items.
I delete the items and they are removed from the hard drive, but they do not appear in the trash and therefore are unable to be "trashed" so that space is freed up.
I did some research and found that this is most likely an issue with ghost files still present on my external.  Through use of the Terminal, I made hidden files appear on my external, but I was unable to re-delete the items that I had previously deleted/was not even able to find the items I had previously deleted.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  As mentioned earier, this problem just surfaced.
    Thanks.

I am having the exact same problem with my external, which is used as my iTunes library storage.
When I delete things from iTunes, and select "move to trash", the files do not appear in the trash, as they used to.
The trash stays empty (as in, no items are visible, even though I just deleted things).
Oddly enough, after a restart, the files will appear, and thus are able to be trashed.
Obviously, I do not want to have to restart every time to do this.
I looked through the other thread, and nothing helped.
    Still looking for some answers!

  • External devices (HD's, digital cameras) do not appear as icons on desktop

This is, I think, exactly the same question asked by Byron B.
That is: external devices (Hard Drives, digital cameras) do not appear as icons on desktop. They used to, but not anymore. I can access them through the finder windows, but no icons on the desktop.
What causes this? More importantly, how do I rectify this?
All help and wisdom much appreciated.
    Thanks so much!

  • Hard Drive and Disk Image not mounting

    Hey everyone,
I'm running a G5 Dual 2Ghz. with OSX 10.5.8 I'm having problems with a back up hard drive. It is an external Western Digital My Book 1.5TB SATA drive. After using it for a few months, it suddenly did not mount anymore.
*1) It also would not appear in Disk Utility.*
    a) Disk Warrior couldn't find the drive (I think because it's formatted with FAT32)
*2) I then took the drive out of the enclosure and put it in the spare bay in the G5.*
    a) It didn't mount
    b) It did show up in Disk Utility
    c) In Disk Utility it wouldn't give me the option to Repair Disk Permissions or Repair Disk
    d) In Disk Utility is says under Partition Scheme: Unformatted
    e) In Disk Utility I don't have the option to mount/eject only gives me the "info" option
    f) Tech Tool did find the drive and it passed all tests
    g) Disk Warrior still did not find the drive
    h) TestDisk finds the drive, but does not find any partitions
*3) I then created a disk image of the drive in Disk Utility onto an external hard drive. The image comes back at 320GB, which seems to be about right I think.*
    a) The disk image would not mount with Disk Image Mounter. It would say there is an Unrecognized File System
    b) In Disk Utility - I don't have the option to Repair Disk Permissions
    c) In Disk Utility - When trying to Repair Disk - I get the error: Repairing Disk failed with error Unrecognized FileSystem
    d) In Disk Utility - If I click Open - The Log file says:
    +Attach Image+
    Initializing...
    Verifying...
    Finishing...
    +Image of "disk0.dmg" attached successfully+
    +Mount of "disk0.dmg" succeeded+
-But it is no where to be found
    e) Disk Warrior can not find the Disk Image
    f) I took the new external drive with the Disk Image to 3 other mac computers but the image would not mount
*4. Other things I've tried when opening the Disk Image for the new external drive.*
    a) in Terminal - hdiutil attach -nomount "volumes/untitled/disk0.dmg"
    b) in Terminal - sudo hdiutil attach -nomount "volumes/untitled/disk0.dmg"
    c) Deleting files System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches
    ALL UNSUCCESSFUL
I'm running very low on ideas. I know I could just erase the drive and reformat it, but the files on it are very important and must be recovered.
Any help or suggestions would be very helpful. I will not have time until after the weekend to try more things. Thanks in advance if you do not hear back from me until after this weekend.

Yes, it will. But if DU says the disk is unformatted then it is also not accessible. If you have files you don't wish to lose then you will need to try recovery software:
    Basics of File Recovery
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.

  • Hard drives mount, icons appear, can't access contents

    Hi.
I recently bought a 17' macbook pro 2.6. I previously had a g4 with four hard drives in it, so I took a couple of them out and put them in external cases. I also have a few external hard drives that were always externals (never in the g4).
The problem I have is that I cannot access one of the formerly internal hard drives. It appears in disk utility and I verified it and there was a minor repair needed (I forget what), so I used the repair function and nothing has changed. The drive icon appears on the desktop, but not under "devices" in the finder window. When I double click on the drive on the desktop, any open finder windows disappear for a few seconds, then reappear, but the drive does not open.
The same thing happens about half of the time with another external drive that was always an external drive. The strange thing is that, even if I can't open the drive, iTunes can access the music files and library on that drive.
And as if that weren't strange enough, about half of the times that I select "documents" from the "places" menu in the finder window, the same thing happens (finder windows disappear for a few seconds and the documents folder doesn't open), yet I can access my documents folder through my home folder.
The other drive I pulled from my g4 is currently my time machine drive and has no similar problems. Two other external drives also have no problems.
    Does this ring any bells?
    Thanks,
    - Bruce

I just tried the most offending drive on my wife's computer (macbook 2.16) and the drive mounts fine and I can open it with no trouble.

  • Corsair pen drive mounting but not visible on desktop

    Hi there
I'm having a problem or two with a MacBook Pro. The Corsair USB2 pen drive I've been using quite happily for some time now appears at first glance to have stopped mounting itself when it's plugged in.
I've taken a look in disk utility and the drive appears there so hopefully I'm right in assuming that it's mounting correctly. Also by clicking the volume from disk utility I'm able to browse the drive, so what have I done?
Is it possible to hide a mounted drive? It isn't visible in finder either, only through disk utility.
    Any help would be grand.
    Thanks in advance

  • New Downloaded/Installed Cannon PPD Print Driver does not appear in driver list

I have downloaded and installed every new driver, 5 times, including he PPD driver for the Canon imagerunner 5570 printer, however when I add the printer the PPD driver does not appear in the list of drivers. the printer is on a wireless network and I was able to print before updating.  I had not set up Time Machine until today so I can't go back, or can I.   I am a new Mac owner so please be gentle.
    Thanks

The PPD installer will copy files to HD > Library > Printers > PPDs > Contents > Resources > en.lproj and the file names will be "cnxxxx.pdd". Can you first check that you have all the files installed.
If you do have the files then you can add the printer using IP > LPD for the protocol. Note that the iR5570 does not support Bonjour so it won't appear in the Default view of Add Printer as Zlig suggested. You then enter the IP address of the iR5570, leave the queue name blank, change the name to something meaningful and then search for the ir5570 in the Print Using menu.
If there are no Canon iR models listed in the Printer List (typing iR in the Search field will determine this) then you should try resetting the printing system as follows.
    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
    2. Move the mouse over the Printers list.
    3. Hold down the Control key and then click the mouse
    4. Click on the 'Reset printing system' pop-up
    5. Close Print & Fax and restart your Mac
This will remove all the printer queues from Print & Fax but will not remove the printer drivers installed on the Mac. So you can try adding your print queue to the iR5570 again using the process above.

  • Network drive mount after sleep

I move a lot between 2 locations. One is my home office (Airport Internet connection) and my office where I connect via cable LAN connection. At office I mount several network drives defined in my Login Items.
The problem is, when I move from my home to the office with a sleeping computer it will not mount the network drives after waking up.
Is there a way to tell my mac to try mounting the drives after waking up?
    Thanks.

MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I find it best to NOT Automount them at all, but have a quick & easy Dynamic Mount system by first deleting those Login Items, then...
What I would do is, once you get the Icons mounted on the Desktop, is to drag them them to the Dock between Applications & Trash, or if you have many and just want a neat Popup Menu, then create a New Folder on the Desktop, drag those Mounted Icons to that Folder, (once there you can even rename them to whatever you wish), then drag that Folder to the Dock between Applications & Trash.
And of course I'd have 3 New Locations in Locations...
One called Hpme, one called Work, and one called All Off...

The Nomad Xtra Zen 60 is pretty amazing. However, considering the vastness of its storage space, it has some serious shortcomings. I understand it uses ID3 tags to create the file names in its proprietary file format. This creates a problem for me. I
