FW800 power on failure

MDD 1.42 Ghz G4 Dual Processor PowerMac/FW800.
Will not start up.
Symptoms are
LED behind power button lights for an instant. Subsequent presses have no light.
Unplugging and plugging AC cord results in momentary LED flash when pressing the power button. Again, subsequent presses have no light.
I replaces the PRAM battery (dated 2003 and had been in the Mac at least that long.) Same results when pressing power button.
When the Mac is opened, and the power button pressed, the small fan by the logic board spins briefly. Subsequently pressing the power button has no effect.
After several days trying to restart the computer again, I noticed that this fan did not spin up as long as before. I suspect that the logic board is drawing current from the new backup battery and has drained it slightly. The battery has been removed.
Reading previous 'FW800 power on problem' threads here, it appears that I possibly have a malfunctioning power supply.
Is this an accurate assessment?

If I recall correctly, Apple offered a new, quieter power supply for this particular Macintosh.
Do I have the replacement in my Mac, and if not, can I still get one from Apple for a reasonable cost?
Sincere thanks in advance for any aid in getting my FW800 back in operation.

Do I have the replacement in my Mac, and if not, can I still get one from Apple for a reasonable cost?
Part A: The power rating should be on the PS label. The original noisy models were 400W; the quieter ones that were used in the exchange and subsequently in all production models, was 360W.
Part B; Don;t know about current availability from Apple. At some point, Apple was charging more for the PS that a FW800 or MDD was worth on the private sale market. When my son's MDD PS died, I found a replacement in the used/pulled market. The one I bought is here, although I noticed the price has gone up again:
MDD/FW800 Power Supply
Another option if you live in an area with a lot of little shops is to have the old PS evaluated and repaired if possible. Don;t take it to a computer shop--they will give you a blank stare and parrot, "Replace! Replace!." Find an electronics shop that specializes in power supplies and ask if they will look at it.
This makes sense because one poster here reported that, after an MDD PS failure,he opened the PS himself (NOT RECOMMENDED!) and found a poorly-done solder joint that had failed. Resoldering (or "reflowing" in some countries) the connection restored the PS. Again, get professional's help. If the PS is repairable, the cost of the evaluation and repair could be much less than the cost of the used one I linked above.

    Hey Guys,
I've been trying to fix this problem for a while now, without any solution. I have a HP ENVY 15-j035eo Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)
which I install Windows 8.1 pro on. I start by getting all the drivers that are missing in Device Manager and updates.
Now I want to enable virtualization with Hyper -V client (All requirements are met for that). Then the computer crashes after restart with a driver power state failure. Exactly the same occurs when I install Visual Studio after restart. Here is some info from
the dump file from blue screen viewer that i get for the problem.

    Hi,
ntoskrnl.exe is known as a kernal image for windows operating system, but hard to find the actual acuse basically according to this error message you provided in the original post, maybe a 3 rd party program or a missing file, or corrupted driver.
Please uplaod the dump file after running Driver Verifier, you can find detailed instruction in the following link (provided  by Patrick Barker)

We do need the actual DMP file as they contain the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
We prefer at least 2 DMP files to spot trends and confirm the cause.
Please follow our instructions for finding and uploading the files we need to help you fix your computer. They can be found here
If you have any questions about the procedure please ask
If you are using Blue screen view, who crashed, or a similar application, don't.  They are wrong at least as often as they are correct

  • Symptom preceding my Time Capsule Power On Failure: Apple TV2 Glitches

Hope this helps someone. I spent days re-installing the system on my my Mac Mini and re-updating my Apple TV 2 firmware in an attempt to solve the problem with my AppleTV2 and Mac Mini losing connection with each other, before the Power On Failure of my Time Capsule identified the problem was elsewhere.
For a month preceding my Time Capsule Power On failure (see below), my wirelessly-attached Apple TV Gen2 would stop in mid-stream while playing a playlist from my wirelessly-attached Mac Mini. Nothing short of quitting & restarting iTunes on the Mac Mini would re-establish a connection.
But when my Time Capsule failed and I was forced to substitute an old AirportExpress b/g base station, all the problems with the AppleTV2 losing connection to the Mac Mini disappeared!
It seems that prior to my Time Capsule failing completely FAILING it was exhibiting MINOR glitches in its wireless operation. These glitches were NOT sufficient to drop the Mac Mini or AppleTV2 from the Internet, but they were apparently enough to interfere with Bonjour networking between the two devices.
    BACKGROUND
My single radio, 1TB Time Capsule failed Wednesday night, pretty much textbook as per the 1100+ replies on this thread: Time Capsule Powered Off, Won't Power Back On: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2129872
My particular "Time Capsule Power On" failure symptoms:
    - Time Capsule WiFi network disappeared
    - Time Capsule the indicator light was OFF (rather than normal green, or even a flashing yellow)
    - Power cycling Time Capsule initially would result in yellow light for 10-20 seconds then nothing
    - With hand on the Time Capsule case I could feel the internal hard-drive spinning
    - Within 1/2 hour, repeated power-cycling would result in the light NEVER coming on
    - Serial no. as per http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3351 Time Capsule: Does not power on
The local Apple store Genius bar replaced my Time Capsule with a brown box 1TB, single radio unit, but would NOT transfer my data on my old Time Capsule. When I asked for assurance that my data would be erased, they said that it was Apple policy that all returned drives are destroyed. It was accept that unwritten promise or leave with my broken Time Capsule. I was NOT happy, but life is already too short – I accepted the replacement Time Capsule.

Contact a repairer in your area.. we can fix them cheaper than data recovery.. and you will get a working TC back as good as new.. in fact we can make it better than new because we can fix the fundamental flaw .. no cooling.

  • Yet another Nano 6th Gen with power button failure

When is apple going to put its hand up and admit there is a problem with the 6th Gen Nano. My daughters 13 month old 16gig  ipod has a power button failure the same as so many others. At £120 odd its already an expensive bit of kit without having to purchase an extended warranty. Pay another £50 for a repair and another years use? I dont think so.
I notice the sales pitch  boasts the new ipod has been "completely renanoed"  Come on Apple why dont you look after the little people and give us a decent trade in on these faulty year old ipods against a new sorted one? Patrick

Well a robust defence of your product Apple well done!

  • IPhone 4s power button failure

My power button has completely failed and unresponsive. Cannot put on standby, turn off or reboot. Has anyone else got this?
I'm going to a genius bar next week as its still in warranty.

I had a power button failur on my iPhone 4 which is presumably more or less identical with regards to the power button. They had to replace the phone as they can only repaire the back glass. Take it back to the Genius Bar if possible.
My friends just had theirs swopped out with few questions asked, as it's not deemed serviable.
Mine was 14 months old so out of warranty - 199 euros was the fee

  • Time Capsule power supply failures

Has the chronic Time Capsule power supply failure after about 18 months use been fixed in the new Time Capsules being sold today?  I had a 500GB Time Capsule I recently had to scrap because of this.

It is always possible there is another fault.. to shut down after a minute.. if you are relating that correctly.. is unusual.. I would power the board from 5v 2A supply.. that will quickly show if the issue is your power supply or not.
The TC is definitely in need of more cooling but I would hate to suggest doing a major modification until it runs out of warranty. It is possible to improve the existing cooling with a bit of smarts.. a laptop (or netbook size) cooler to which you can seal the TC.. this is the tricky bit.. you need to allow a space underneath though.. perhaps 10mm.. and seal just the edge of the TC so it allows the cooler to draw air through the TC. That will work without modifying it. But you will need to make up a proper spacer and gasket.
I see pictures of various fans mounted on the top.. they are next to useless. Cooling the outside plastic will achieve only the tiniest improvement in heat transfer due to the thick plastic (insulating) top.. if it was made out of metal maybe it would do something.
Sounds like what is also needed is a different heat sensor that would start the fan at a lower temperature.
It is not the sensor that is the issue. The TC includes a proper fan controller. It is simply set too high.. and so it doesn't turn on.
If you want to break into the TC.. you can solder in a console.. and use serial to USB adapter.. these are very cheap.. the soldering in is tricky.

  • Yoga 8.1 Driver Power State Failure

So this is my second attempt at 8.1 that works as well as 8. Very aggravating but that's old news here. All i can say is that I'd be having a fit except for the one button image of 8 with all my stuff that I just restored.
What causes the suddon Driver Power State Failure message and either freeze or crash? I could have sworn I downloaded all the correct 8.1 drivers and followed all the other suggestions here on this forum.
And, Lenovo, what about providing an 8.1 image for all your loyal cutomers that bought the first generation Yoga. Aren't you embarrased that we are all going thru this?

    Hi,
    How is the current situation?
If the issue persists, please upload the dump file as below methods:

  • Troubleshooting power supply failures

I'm branching out this thread as a continuation of <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2418851> since the topic has evolved and the subject is no longer accurate.
I have a 2.1GHz iMac G5 (iSight) that does not boot reliably and sometimes goes into deep sleep and can't be awakened. I have ruled out software and RAM issues, leaving power supply and logic board as the likely suspects. I'm leaning towards the power supply. I'd like more info on the symptoms of power supply failures and see if my symptoms are consistent with it.
*Reasons to believe it's the power supply:*
    • symptoms are consistent with the computer not getting enough power.
    • it's a more common failure.
    • Computer has 4+ years of continuous usage.
    • the left side of the vent had been warm lately (that fan pushes air over the HD then the PSU)
*Reasons to believe it's the power supply:*
    • visual inspection showed no damaged capacitors (although there could be hidden damage)
    • in my previous experience with power failures, the Mac shut down completely, not half way.
*Reasons to believe it's the logic board:*
    • problem triggered by adding RAM (although that's not the only trigger and removing the RAM didn't • instantly solve the issue. Timing may have been a coincidence)
*Reasons to believe it's not the logic board:*
    • It passed all the Apple hardware and Techtool Pro tests.

FYI, you can access them in /private/var/logs, but you need to use a utility to show invisible files first.
    The last system.log entry is
    May 8 13:19:33 eric kernel[0]: IOPMSlotsMacRISC4::determineSleepSupport has canSleep true
So it looks like it went into sleep normally, but couldn't wake up or shut down without recording any more log entries.

  • Replacing motherboard on Dual 1.42 MDD FW800 Power Mac

I need to replace the motherboard on my Dual 1.42 MDD FW800 Power Mac.
Can someone guide me to the correct board I need to purchase? I did a search but couldn't easily find a clear-cut answer... I figure it is common knowledge for some here.
    Thank you!

    Hi-
    Should be This board.
Confirm the serial number of your existing board.

  • Multiple power adaptor failures

I'm posting on here partly out of frustration, and partly in the hope that someone may be able to help.
I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 13 inch, that up until July of this year (2013), I was very happy with.
However, in July my power adaptor failed. I had a dimly lit LED and when clicking the battery icon, I was told "Battery is not charging", "Power source: Power Adaptor".
I took my MacBook to the local Premium Reseller (on apples advice) and they replaced the adaptor.
The problem re-occured only a month later. Same problem, same advice, same replacement. This happened THREE times, each time about a month since the previous occasion.
These adaptors were treated well. Rarely used in a different location, and kept free of kinks or stresses.
This month, the problem repeated, AGAIN. I took it to my local service centre and this time they diagnosed a logic board failure, and replaced the part under applecare. They also provided ANOTHER new adaptor.
I picked up my MacBook yesterday. The problem repeated itself today.
I am starting to go slightly mad at this point. The most apple will help over the phone is to tell me to visit the repair centre again and hope for the best, but I'm at my wits end now.
If anyone has any idea what the problem could be, please let me know, because I'm really getting nowhere at the moment with applecare.

That a UPS unit would have prevented your logic board failures. Properly designed power supplies do not need a UPS unit in this country. In some third world countries where the power is unreliable on a daily basis with large power swings, they are a must have.
In my opinion, the G5 iMac's were a poor design with inadequate heat dissipation, weak power supplies and logic boards. Most of them ran for years, but an inordinate number of them had multiple failures. The new aluminum models are a much better design with most of the high heat components located at the top of the machine.
I had no hardware problems with my eight year old Dell...but I'm still sticking with Apple because of their superior software performance.
Good luck with what ever you decide...virg

  • Windows 8.1 Recovery run after power cut & failure to start. PC back up and running but LR "Unexpected Error opening catalogue" is as far as I get.

Hi, I had a search about for a solution but failed. Apologies in advance if it has been addressed already. I should add, I am semi proficient with the PC but apart from image tweaks have never really got my head around LR's cataloguing mechanics (cause of the issue anyone)
Any way, I back up every time LR asks and have a folder full of them, so I thought it would be as simple as just clicking on a backup from before the Windows recovery was run and we would be up and running again.
So I go to my LR folder/ backups/  select a backup and then get this dialogue box for a short while.
    Followed by
Now I am out of my depth. Click cancel. Presented with.

    Joy of joys.
Fingers crossed I am just being a tard and the solution is simple. Please help and if I have missed any info you need please ask.
    Thanks,
    Matt.

If you're selecting a LR catalog backup in a folder that doesn't show .lrcat.lock and .lrcat-journal files you have a different issue.
Try removing your LR Preferences file, which may have been corrupted by the the power failure:

If the issue persists try uninstalling LR5.5, delete the Preferences file as described above, and then reinstall LR5.6:

  • Anyone having Power Supply Failures with 4305's

For some reason over the last 6-8 weeks I am getting multiple power failures on my 4305DMPs, replacing the power supply/wall plug brings everything right back but I'm wondering if there is a bigger problem.
All DMP's are connected to APC power bars with Surge Protection, and the LCD Screen continues to work fine. The DMP will just quickly flicker both Red and Green Lights, and remain unresponsive. We have tried cleaning teh contacts on the power supply but have had no luck.
I have had to swap 10-12 of them now, these have been working with no issues in the field for over 3 years.
I guess I am just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, a search on here didn't reveal anything.
    Thanks,
    Jh

I haven't heard anything about this on the 4305, but just pointing out that this is a 2-year old post.
We're using some Linksys POE -> 5V splitters and they've been humming away for years. I listen to feedback about reliability, but it would be helpful if a specific part # / manufacturer on the brick were identified along with any complaints about it.
As far as replacements, be sure to use the right specifications, other DMPs operate off of 12VDC but the 4305 uses a 5-volt adapter.
    Input voltage: 5V
    Input current: 3 ADC
Power consumption: Peak: 12W; average: 5W

  • Reason for power manager failure?

In the last two weeks my G4 ibook has needed the advanced power manager reset twice. Both times the computer was showing the battery not being charged just before the computer stopped working. Removing the battery and resetting the power manager worked both times, but I'm thinking this is just a symptom of another problem. Any thoughts? Thanks, Craig

    HI Vidya,
    Go to SM 36.
    Check the job log.
If find the reason of Failure, its good or else contact with your basis peer.
