Fx Changing Smart objects on other layers

I have a simple set of shapes created in illustrator (created on separate layers) that I have pasted into PS as a smart object I have duplicated the Smart Object layer and then broken up each element by going back in to ILL to delete the other shapes so now each shape is on a sep PS layer. My problem is when I apply any effect to a single smart object layer it applies the Fx across all the shapes on all the layers in PS which I want to control separately.
Thanks for any help.
Mike

I think I answered my own question. I didn't realize you can change a smart object into a smart object giving itself it's own autonomy

  • Photoshop bug: Smart Objects overwriting other Smart Objects when edited and saved in Illustrator

Experiencing issues when working with a large number (over 200) vector smart objects brought into Photoshop CS4 from Illustrator.
Things seemed to be going along nicely; if I needed to edit a Smart Object, I could double-click it, it would open in Illustrator and then I could edit and save it.  Return to Photoshop and the Smart Object is updated.  Swell and dandy.  The issue started happen when I hit a large quantity of either vector smart objects (remember, over 200) or the many layers and groups within Photoshop (must be over 500).  When I would double-click, open, edit, and save the vector Smart Object, the Photoshop Smart Object I was working on would update AND another/several other Smart Objects would update as well.  Which, of course, would ruin the artwork, as suddenly I was seeing several instances of the same object.  If it hadn't have been for ForeverSave, I many not have recovered the work.
It's rather hard to isolate the issue to see what's causing the problem.  Here are some of the possible causes:
    Running Snow Leopard on Mac
Many, many Smart Objects in file, perhaps enough to ruin the naming convention and cause bugs when Photoshop referenced the temp file
Many, many Photoshop layers and groups
Illustrator vector files copy+pasted from several different files (affects the naming convention perhaps?)
Some groups/layers in Photoshop are duplicates
To help make it a little clearer, you should know:
Running the most updated software / OS (that is until CS5 comes out)
Smart Objects showed no error until I had actually opened, edited, and saved the referenced temp file (i.e. VectorSmartObject1.ai)
Files saved and worked on from Dropbox (network folder)
Not looking for much of an answer to this question; I just wanted to see if anyone else had come across this bug.  Also, Adobe PLEASE look into this as you begin testing for the next update.  I have the file(s) if you need to replicate the issue.  My best guess is that the naming convention of Vector Smart Objects has an odd character limit so when Vector Smart Object 200.ai is saved, Vector Smart Object 2.ai gets overwritten.

Have you tested this with Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5? (the current versions, that came out last month)
If you duplicated a smart object layer, both layers refer back to the same file content. So when you change the file, both layers would be updated.  That is intentional and explained in your manual.  If you didn't realize this, that could explain what you are seeing.
If you placed separate files, then they should not be updated at the same time, because they will refer to separate files.
Yes, Smart Objects only update when you save the file.
You would need over 4 billion smart objects in one document to get Photoshop confused about which one refers to which file.  And since the layer limit is much less than 4 billion, I doubt that is the cause.
There is no naming convention involved. We don't limit the filenames (except to platform standards and to include a file type extension).

  • As a user of Extract, I would like to have the ability to open/access assets and information contained within smart objects or linked layers. Is this possible?

    Problem:
In Extract ( Extract for PSD ) a user is unable to access assets or information from smart objects or linked layers.
    Usage:
Smart Objects/Linked Layers are useful for templated web workflows
@Sectioning content allows for a holistic view with access to granular information
    Possible Solution(s):
Could we create a link between to cloud files.
Could a smart object or linked layer be expanded on upload
Could we create a drop menu like the layer comps that includes related files

    Hello Martin,
Our current support in Extract for Smart Objects includes showing them in the file, and using them on the backend when you request your layer(s) to be scaled while exporting (i.e., when scaling up, the highest quality image is used).  We also display the colors, fonts and gradients from the included Smart Objects in the Extract Styles panel.
We have considered providing a way to open Smart Objects from within Extract, and could use some feedback from you on how this user experience would work best for you. Would you prefer option a) or b) below, and why?
    a) When opening a Smart Object, it opens in the current browser window, replacing your current view of the PSD.
    b) When opening a Smart Object, it opens in a new browser window, which receives focus (is the frontmost browser tab/window).
Also, if you tried to open a Linked Smart Object when the linked file is not available, what would you expect to happen?
Would you describe in more detail what you mean by: "Could a smart object or linked layer be expanded on upload?" and how you'd use this feature?

  • Edits to a JPG Smart Object  in a layered TIFF file:  DOES NOT Save to the originally placed file?

When placing a JPG as a Smart Object (and even multiples) into a layered TIFF file:  If I open each layered Smart Object JPG, make changes as a JPG and SAVE the file, I expect the ORIGINAL SOURCE JPG file that was placed to also be saved- I thought that is the file I was editing!
This SUCKS!  To capture my edits to the original individual files:  I now have to open each layed TIF file, Edit each smart object JPG and SAVE AS to overwrite the original and capture my changes?  Is this the way its always been- I don't think it has.  How can I edit a Smart Object file in a layered document and ALSO update the SOURCE file?

You should edit the original jpg, and then replace the smart object. There is a utility that makes this easier, if you do many of these. Looks liek this

  • Changing smart object file format

I've got a great problem with the smart objects in my project:
I imported some Images (no background) which had the file format 'png'. I just dragged and dropped the files into my current photoshop window. They got imported and then automtically converted into smart objects.
After that I created a lot of copies of these smart object and transformed them.
Now I wanted to change one of the smart objects and double clicked on it. But unfortunately the opened file is a png. So it's not possible to save layers in this smart obejct
Is there any way to change the file format of a smart obejct (like psb/psd)?

Yes. Open an SO into a doc window/tab, edit it or whatever, do a Save As to PSD (or any other format). It'll be saved into a temporary folder. Close the SO doc window/tab. In the main doc window/tab, right-click the SO's name in Layers panel, pick Replace Contents and select the file you saved in the temporay folder. All instances of the SO will be auto-updated.

  • 13.02 update changes smart object / icc profile assignment behavior?

Since updating to the 13.02 release of photoshop CS6 extended I have noticed the following modified behavior:
When changing the assigned profile of an image containing smart objects, where the smart objects have previously gone through a color profile conversion - the smart objects will get reconverted to the newly assigned profile.
This was certainly not the behavior of 13.01 and previous versions.
Is this an intentional change?  If it is shouldn't it be noted in the release notes?
System info: mac os x 10.6.8

I think I understand the rational for this change, but I think it misses the mark a bit.
In my experience the largest source of smart-object trouble is when someone converts a document without first assigning a profile, relying on the profile set in photoshop's color settings.  When the smart-object is edited on another computer the color will shift if the color settings on the two computers don't match exactly.
By reconverting smart objects on profile assignment you are creating two new problems.
Only smart objects are reconverted, so documents with both smart and not-smart layers will end up in an inconsitent state.  Colors that matched within the same image may no longer match.
If a document is saved without a profile assigned and you later want to assign it a profile, you will have to use the original profile or your color will shift.  It is not uncommon when working with documents from other organizations that the original profile used for conversion is not available.
What then is the fix for this problem?  Always embed the profiles used for conversion within the smart objects for use when updating.  Source and destination.

  • Photoshop CS5 Smart objects, Pen tool, Layers.

Hi Ive got few questions about Photoshop CS5.
Every time I open new image in my project photoshop opens as Smart Object and I always have to Rasterize its really annoying. How to change it?
When im using Pen tool and making selection its selects now the part which I selecte but background so I always have to inverse selection to select the part I want to its never happens in Photoshop CS3
When im working on two different projects and I want to copy layer from one project to another how you do it?
    Thanks for your help.

    1. If your dragging or placing into the image, you can go to Edit>Preferences>General and uncheck Place or Drag Raster Images as Smart Objects.
    2. When using the Pen Tool enable Add to Path Area before drawing the path. You can change it after drawing the path by using the Path selection Tool.
    3. If your using tabs you can select the Move Tool and drag from the document area on the screen to the other tab and the other document should reveal itself.
Another way is to right click on the layer in the layers panel, choose Duplicate Layer and then in the dialog that follows choose the document under destination.

  • Why does Photoshop randomly change Smart Object sizes when transforming?

This has happened to me forever and every so often I ask to see if there's a solution. It seems like a bug.
    Here's the process.
Select smart object (via panel or Move tool)
    Free Transform
Select top left anchor (happens with any btw)
    Change measurements to desired size.
    Apply transformation
    Free Transform again
Measurements are different than what was applied!
I've again documented the process and am attaching all the images at the end.
    See specs & hardware:
    OSX 10.8.5
    PS CC 14.2.1 x64
    Magic Mouse.
This also happens at home with
    OSX 10.9.3
    PS CC 14.2.1 x64
    Trackpad or USB mouse
    Notes:
If rasterized this tends to not happen but that's not a solution because it takes away the advantage of Smart Objects.
Image 6 is the second Free Transform.
    Any help is appreciated.

It happens when you have transformed text.
It's a widely discussed bug, that we've acknowledged and are testing a fix for.

  • Why won't my layer fill behind objects in other layers?

Hey guys, I have no idea why this certain copy of Photoshop CS5 is doing this.  I'll be trying to fill a layer or a selection but whenever I fill it, it never fills anything below other objects in completely unrelated layers.  Is there a setting I can turn off to make sure that this doesn't happen anymore?  It's really frustrating.   Thanks!

Are you filling with the Paint Bucket Tool? If so, make sure that it doesn't have All Layers enabled in the Options bar, otherwise it will consider the colours in layers other than target when determining which pixels of the target are to be filled. (Same advice applies when making a selction with Magic Wand Tool and others.)

  • Apply Smart object transformation to other layers

Is there a way to get the current transformation used on a Smart Object layer (scale/skew/rotat/perspective/warp/etc.), to allow applying it to other layer(s)? I've looked through the Javascript reference, and I haven't found anything that appears to allow this.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I have many scenarios which need this, and it's a real annoyance that it doesn't seem possible. Somewhere in the file are the coordinates and specs which are controlling the transformation, and no way to access them
Among the needs I have, I work with people who seem to think of Smart Objects as if they are folders - I sometimes have to dig thorugh 5 or 6 layers of smart objects to get to what needs editing, and at least one occasion, Photoshop has crashed as I was trying to save my way back to the original document, losing the changes that I had made. I was hoping to be able to make a script which would open the Smart Object, bring the layers therein into the current document and apply the same transformations. This would save me a LOT of time fixing these messy files. It would also allow me to match an existing Smart Object layer to different Smart Object layer. I sometimes need to do this, as I occasionally edit one smart object only to find that several others which are the same graphic, are actually separate Smart Objects.
Oh, well. Maybe CS6. ...or CS7... or...
    Thanks again.

  • Can I change what layer is used to name a Smart Object?

I really love smart objects, and in particular I appreciate being able to combine a layer and its adjustment layers into a single smart object. However, when I create smart objects from multiple layers this way, I end up with names like "Hue/Saturation 31" and "Curves 16". Is there a way to set Photoshop to name the smart objects based on the primary layer, so I don't lose the layer names that actually indicate what's in the smart object?
For example, I do a lot of editing and combining groups of "selfies" that people send me. Once I extract them from their backgrounds, I bring them into a single file, with each "selfie" named with the name of the person pictured. So, for example, I'd have a Jane Doe layer, a John Smith layer, etc. Then I add adjustment layers to each one, to match their exposure and color as much as possible. Then, if any of the adjustment layers are not applied evenly to the entire smart object, I combine the smart object and its adjustment layers into a new smart object, so I can move and scale it easily without messing up the alignment of the combined layers. However, then I have to go back to the original files to know who is who.
Smart objects work much better than linked layers, but all the extra steps necessary to re-name them are driving me nuts. Does anyone have a solution?
    Paula

When I know i'll be transforming or adding additional filters, I prefer to go directly to creating smart objects rather than grouping them first, since the relevant layers are automatically "grouped" by being pulled into the smart object. My thought is that the default name for a smart object (or a group, for that matter) should be the lowest layer on the selected stack that has a non-default name, since in most cases that's the one you'd want to use for the new smart object. I don't know exactly how Photoshop recognizes layer names, but since it knows what number to assign to new layers or individual types of adjustment layers, it should also be able to recognize when a layer name is not a default name.

  • Convert multiple layers into separate smart objects

I have multiple layers in a document that I want to make into separate smart objects.
If I select them and choose "convert to smart object" in the Layers Panel fly out, it flattens the layers into 1 smart object.
Can it be done, or do I need to make each layer a smart object one at a time.
    OR... let me back up
I have several files in Bridge, I want to "load into Photoshop layers" using the TOOLS > Batch Command BUT have each file load as a smart object.
    Either way would be great!

While these don't use the batch command, take a look at
from within photoshop, File>Scripts>Load Files into Stack.
For bridge try Dr. Browns Services:
    http://www.russellbrown.com/scripts.html
If you have cs5, you can drag files from mini bridge into an existing
photoshop document, for smart object layers, provided you have
your preferences under general to place or drag raster images as smart objects.

  • How to save a file with smart object?

I have just created a file from LR2, by choosing 'open as smart object' in PS.
I then added a cloning layer and did my cloning.
When I wanted to save the file, instead of PS turning it in into a PSD with the same name, I now suddenly got the 'save as' pop up screen and '-2' as the recommended name. The original folder where the file came from was not shown.
I don't know what that's all about, but I'd prefer it would just save the file as a PSD and automatically show the file alongside the NEF in LR2, like it does when I don't use the 'open as smart object' feature. Is this typical for working with smart objects opened straight from LR2?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Marsel

Well, like this you open the file s a smart object, so if you want to now clone on a layer but want it to be a part of the smart object then you go to the layer panel and click on the smart object's icon there to edit the smart object and you hit save (command S) and it will save with that layer to your original.
then when you click the tab or the window that has the original opened as smart object those changes will be reflected, but you will not see your cloned layer active as that is a part of the smart object and you have to open the smart object to get to it.
What you say! Yes that is what I say that is what a smart object is, you are using the smart object as a part of another document( that is why you are being asked to save as, as this new documents you can now make changes which will not effect the original which is the smart object unless you rasterize it which will make it no longer a smart object.
What good is a smart object, well there are many say you are using this document or image if you wish in say five projects and the image has been retouched and it is determined it should have some more work done to it all you have to do is retouch the smart object and all five projects are updated.
    You see smart.
And of course you can d things to all five projects that can be different from one another on other layers without ever destroying the work you have done to the smart object.

  • Smart Object in AE

Doing some animation work with a lot of vector elements that I am arranging in photoshop as smart objects.  I like to comp my AE stuff in Photoshop, even though I do the detail  vector work in Illustrator. Now, when working in AE...the PS composition  still sees the smart object as a PS layer. If I want to make changes to that smart object, must I reopen the illustrator file, edit, save it, reopen PS file, update smart object, save PSD, update layer source in AE?
It seems like a heck of a lot of steps just to update a vector layer. Is there a way to quickly edit/access vector objects that have been arranged in Photoshop without having to jump through all these hoops or is there anyway that a smart object splits into layers in AE?

I use your workflow all the time because I'm always having to bring PSD files into AE that have been created with smart vector objects. Edit original opens Photoshop, double click on vector smart object opens Illustrator, modify and save in AI, Save in Photoshop, and then the object is updated in AE. Not an awful extra step but a required one.
Here's another solution that might work depending on the layer effects applied and the complexity of the smart object. When you have AI open select all the paths and copy. Back in AE deselect all layers and then double click the Rectangle Tool to add a new comp sized shape layer. Now paste. Your Illustrator path will become a mask on the Rectangle shape layer.
You can even take this a step further by setting a keyframe for a mask path, copying that, then creating a new shape layer with the pen tool, setting a path keyframe, and then paste from the copied mask to the created shape keyframe. Now you have access to all of the cool shape layer tools like Repeater, Pucker and Bloat and the others. There's also a script out there somewhere that converts masks to shape layers.
If your original PSD file was imported supporting layer styles you can open up the layer you are replacing Copy the layer styles, and then paste them to the shape layer.

  • Working with smart objects

I've got a menu I built in Photoshop that uses smart objects to warp and give perspective to both button text as well as pictures in the menu. I built the menu at 300dpi, then resized it to 72 for working in Encore.
That 72dpi menu then became a template for other menus in the project.
Encore does not support smart objects, it converts them to shape layers. Since I had done additional design work on the menu in Encore/Photoshop, I saved a copy of it to be a template. I then opened my original of this file and dragged the smart objects back into it for my template, so that I could create new buttons, etc. for other menus.
I've since discovered that if I create a NEW smart object in that template, the smart object is at 72 dpi. However, if I modify an existing smart object, it's still at 300 dpi, even though the file is 72 dpi. Am I making any sense? So when I double click one of the original smart objects to, for example, change the text to create a new button, I get a large, 300dpi file to work with. The result is that the original smart objects are creating much sharper, cleaner text, and all my new smart objects are creating soft text. I've also discovered if I open one of the new smart objects and change it's size to 300dpi before creating the text layer, I can save it that way and the text is sharper and cleaner.
I'm not sure what my question is... I guess I'm just sharing :-), but also wondering if my workaround has a downside that I don't see.
The logical question you might be thinking is why don't I just build all the menus in 300 and then resize, and the answer is that I did a lot more work on the template after I had resized it for Encore and don't want to go back and redo all of that on the original file.
    Julie

I'll test it without the warping and see what I learn and let you know, but I suspect I won't see a difference and you're right that warping the text may be more dependent on resolution.
I just created a 72 dpi file with 2 identical smart objects, except one is 72dpi and the other is 300dpi. I then put the same text with the same layer style on each. There is a difference in the appearance, with the 300dpi smart object yielding cleaner, sharper looking text. When I remove the layer style on both so they're flat, no drop shadow or bevel, there is still a very discernible difference in sharpness. Also, when I export the images to a NTSC monitor, the difference is apparent.
So it appears if you plan to warp text in a 72dpi graphic, you'll get better results if you increase the dpi of the smart object.
