Fx5200-128 or GeForce4 MX440 64MB ?

The deal is.....I don't really play games on my computer.  I do quite a bit of graphics (photoshop, flash, etc).  I know the mx440 is pretty low end, but is there any reason for me to step a bit higher to the fx5200?
Thanks in advance.
No specs yet.....still working on it.

The reason the FX 5200 scores higher in benchmarks is because it has Direct X 9 support - which the Geforce 4 MX card is lacking - but real life performance is only marginal more, unless you play any brand new Games written for Direct X 9 - and there aren't many.
So keep saving - and when you have enough for a FX 5600 there may be more games available to make use of the Direct X 9 technology.

  • GeForce4 Mx440 probs in some games

Hi guys i just got a GeForce4 Mx440 64mb DDR (model 8878 by MSI) but I'm having some problems with it when I play Flight Simulator.
Whenver a text shows up, the letters are shown in a very weird way, as if it had a shadow. Here's a link to an image of this problem.
    http://forums.projectai.com/htdocs/dcforum/User_files/3e4d3fc808201232.jpg
I'm using Nvidia's latest drivers (41.09) but it's still happening, and it only happens in Flight simulator. I got other graphic intensive games and everything runs smoothly. I also noticed it crashes the audio too sometimes.
    My system is
Soyo Dragon SY-K7V with Via chipset
    AMD Athlon 1800 processor
    512 RAM
    7200rpm 60Gb Hard Drive
    and
    MSI 8878 graphics card.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks!

Yes i did and there aren't any patches.  :(  That's weird because it didn't happen with my older Geforce2 card and it only happens with Flight Simulator in full screen mode...

  • Cooler for GeForce4 Mx440 T8X

    I bought a GeForce4 MX440 T8X las week, but I saw taht it's has not got a cooler.
That is right or I need to buy it?
    Regards.

You mean it just has a heatsink without a fan ?
If that is what you mean it's normal, you don't need to add anything to it.
If it has no cooling at all (bare nVIDIA chip) return it as it should come with a cooling solution.
This heatsink is usually used on MSI MX440 cards:

  • S-Video only plays B+W on TV...... [FX5200-128]

Hi, I'm running Windows XP with an FX 5200 128 Video Card.
I have an S-Video plug that turns in to a Yellow RCA wire and plugs in to my TV.
When I turn my TV on, I see everything just fine. The Windows start up screen is in color. However, when my desktop appears, everything goes Black and White.
I've tried all types of settings, but I just can't seem to get color on my TV. (I do still get Color on my monitor)
Does any one have any suggestions ??
    Thanks :-)

are you shure that you have color TV?
just kidding, try using latest drivers from Nvidia, and remember to instal WDM drivers too (not the latest version).

  • Solution: GeForce4 MX440 with nVidia-1.0-7667 on Solaris10

Apparently the nVidia driver supports GeForce4.
If you have such a card, this is what you have to do:
    --First install the nVidia module.
--Do /usr/X11/bin/scanpci and look at the pci id of your video card. It should look something like "10de,xxxx".Mine was "10de,0171".
--The secret is not to edit manually /etc/driver_aliases. Instead use update_drv, like this:
    update_drv -a -i '"pci10de,171"' nvidia
Be sure to drop the leading 0 from the pci id, e.g. 0171, otherwise it will not work.
After you've done this, make sure the X server is set to Xorg, by running kdmconfig, run xorgconfig to generate a /etc/X11/xorg.conf, edit xorg.conf according to the nVidia README
    Finally, do a "reboot -- -r"
    Enjoy
    Marcel Nita

You will never in a million years get that card to work. Even if you did, it is a VERY old card of limited value. At the Macelite site you may find ROMs that work, but more than likely NOT. OWC used to have Radeon 9600s that make a decent G5 AGP choice. Apple_Mechanix on EBay has a variety of cards as well.

  • MSI U8668 and MSI GeForce4 MX440

I have a Systemax Venture computer.  It is brand new, 2.4GHZ, 512 Meg DDR.
The motherboard is a MSI Biostar U8668 Motherboard.
It has a built in 32MEg 3D SavageDDR video controller.
    I purchased a brand new MSI Mx440 8X (128MEG DDR, 8x AGP) video card.
I am using FreshDiagnose to check my computer performace.  Before  the new card, I get about 633 Video Performance.  After the MSi GeFroce card, I get 533.  I have tried new drivers and such, to only worsen the results.  I have tried the card in another machine, and it performs worse than a Diamond Stealth 64 card.  This card has 128MEG DDR ram onboard.
I am completely stuck.  I paid good money for this card, and want it to outperform any other card I have!!
Does anyone else have any ideas, or has anyone had this problem>  What should be the driver revison # for the Video card, the Motherboard?
Also, whatd the best Video performance benchmark to test with and get the best results??
This is my last effort to try befor obtaining an RMA, but would like to solve the problem ASAP!
    Thanks!
    Neil Hicks

Biostar ( http://www.biostar.com.tw ) is not related to MSI.
This board uses a VIA P4X266 chipset, did you install the VIA 4in1 drivers?
How many points do you get in 3DMark 2001 (not 2003) ?
I downloaded FreshDiagnose and it's benchmarks are all 2D acceleration (simple draw operation, text, moving bitmaps, drawing circles and lines...)
These are all legacy features and not executed in the 3D core of the VGA card.
If you want to run Doom(1) at 300FPS you would care about this, but it has nothing to do with D3D or openGL preformance.

  • Geforce4 MX 64MB Manual?

I cannot find a Manual on the Geforce4 MX and nVidia refers me to Apple and here's where I have arrived. The following is where my question fits in (I'm looking for Power Consumption information in watts, and would also like a copy of any techno-info on the Geforce4 MX):
    Dear PCI Card Manufacturer:
I recently purchased a Quicksilver Dual 1GHz which has 1 AGP and 4 PCI Slots. I have one or more of your AGP/PCI cards. Would you take the time to indicate the Power Consumption and / or Needs of your card(s) as they pertain to usage in either a Quicksilver 2002 and a PowerPC 9500 with cpu upgrade? I need for it to be expressed in Watts, possibly in Idle and Peak loads.
After reading through some of the Manuals, I find I need to contact you for your assistance (a bit too much information for me to take in).
    Thank You,
    Bill Connelly

No success yet in making a GeForce4 MX card work.
    (1) I have replaced the battery to remove that subject as an issue, even though the original battery still measured 3.62 volts even after being left off power for several hours.
    (2) Since I had no success with OS 9.2 (in the first HD partition), and since resetting the PRAM would force that partition to be my startup disk, I inserted the OS 10.3 install disk in the CD drive in an attempt to boot from there. I first practiced my procedures with the original video card before replacing it with a GeForce4 MX card.
    (3) After inserting the GeForce4 MX card I reset the PMU.
    (4) On booting up the machine I reset the PRAM and NVRAM (command-option-P-R) and then used the C key to boot from the 10.3 install disk. I'm not certain that it ever cranked up the CD drive, but I was never able to get any display regardless. At least I was able to get a response to the reset button, something that never happened originally (before ever resetting the PMU).
I think the situation is nearly hopeless as far as the GeForce4 MX and my G4/733 Quicksilver is concerned. I shall return the cards to the dealer and in the meantime repost (with a link to this discussion) on the forum "Expanding your Power Mac G4" where there seems to be quite a bit of history on the subject of video cards.
Thank you for the responses and suggestions.

  • Problem: GeForce4 MX440 on Solaris10

Has anyone succeeded in getting the nVidia drivers to work with a GeForce4?
If so, how did you do it?
I made it work just a little bit, because the entire system hangs after loading the Gnome session.
I used the driver version 1.0-7667 for Solaris.

    Hi;
Actually i completed all pre-requests need before installing the CRS.
what I can't understand is, that the first time I started to install Clusterware every thing was fine, at that time the problem was briefed with my laptop resources it was hanging when I run the script root.sh
Now when i changed my laptop with a better one this problem I mentioned(java....) arise. So really I don't know..

    Motherboard Model: P4S266VX
I installed my msi g4mx440-vtp (ms-88-66) into my sony vaio machine just yesterday and it accepted the card, but it didn't recognize that the card had dual vga and when i tried to click the msi information or the msi clock tab in propterties, the window would freeze and close... i need help id ont know whats going on i installed the included software as well as the updated nvidia drivers. My mobo has a integrated gfx card... and id unno if that has anything to do withi t... help :-/
here's a screen shot of my problem:

Try to disable your intergrated gfx card, read the mb manual on how to do that.
If the built in gfx card is the cause, it could solve the dual VGA  problem too.
    Good luck.

  • Prince of Persia 3D on FX5200-128

    Hi ,
:-]]]ALL games are fine, EXCEPT with Prince of Persia 3D(NOT sands of time), it crashes after the first movie logo . The only way to run POP3D is to disabling "direct draw" . the game grafics are still OK, but is soooo slow.
    Thanks for your attention.

    Hi ,
I tested the game with my old vodoo 3 3000 and the game goes perfectly . But with my Geforce FX 5200 the game crashes . I think it could be a "opengl" or "direct3d" configuration of my geforcefx5200, but I don´t know how options try first(so much combined options ).
:idea:One final question, Is that a problem if I put my old vodoo 3 3000 in the same computer with geforcefx5200???
Sorry for my english, I´m from Brazil.
    Thank you.

  • [GeForce4 MX] Geforce4 MX440 AGP and LCD 1680x1050 -

I am about to buy a 21inch LCD with a recommended resolution of 1680x1050 but this card doesn't seem to support that resolution?  I uploaded the latest drivers without luck.
It also states ...   • Integrated TMDS transmitter for Digital Visual Interface support with scaling and filtering for flat panels up to 1600x1200.
Does this mean that I would need to replace this card to get 1680 x 1050 resolution ...if so any suggestions for a good basic card as I am not a gamer!

    Bill,
I'm a little confused at what exactly "Software core image is", for information sake my eMac with an ATI 7500 (does not support core image) displays the same behaviour in 10.4 and 10.5 (Core image 'not supported' in 10.4 and 10.5 'software supported'), but no ripple effect etc..
In my experience any card that does not supported hardware-wise for Core Image won't display the ripple effect - maybe there is an underlying advantage of 'software supported' video cards but I'm not sure what - maybe it's just vague terminology which means the same thing under 10.4 and 10.5
I suppose the conclusion I have is don't expect to see the 'ripple effect' or other visual core image features :P.

  • Unexpected Rebooting..

    Hi..
I've been reading through the forums a bit now and I noticed that alot of people have the same problem as me more or less but I still have -not- seen any definitive fixes.
My hardware is -brand- new. I bought it this morning and having set it up and been busy I've only been using it for about 8 hours in all.
    MSI 865PE Neo2-LS mainboard.
    P4 2.4ghz 800mhz FSB.
    Infinium 512mb DDR400
    MSI GeForce4 MX440 64mb 4x AGP
    Q-Tec 400w Power Supply.
My system has rebooted 3-4 times now.
I was running the "Demo" in 3DMark 2001 SE Build 330 and all of a sudden just after the Max Payne style bit it rebooted itself. I was then unable to turn it on... I left it as it was and went off to think about the problem.
Half an hour later I came back to jiggle around a bit and see if I could fix it. Surprise surprise I managed to get it running again.. for a short time.. within 30 minutes while watching a video on screen it powered itself down.
By this time I was truly fed up so I decided to explore a little more.. well.. eventually I swapped my mouse into a PS/2 port.. now my mouse is lit up. So I boot.. and the mouse is lit up even though the monitor is refusing to display a picture. I power down.. but when I power down I notice that my mouse light is still on?!?!?! So I pull the power cable out.. and then plug it back in again.. power up.. AND SURPRISE SURPRISE ITS WORKING AGAIN.
Now.. 2 hours in.. I was frolicking in the joy of being able to play Dungeon Siege with decent FPS. Well.. just as I was about to host a game guess what? It powered itself down again. My mouse light still shining even though everything is off (yes I have LED lit fans and they were all off.. no sound coming from anything.. just this eery blue glow from my mouse...)
So here I am typing this overly long topic in high hopes that someone will know what the $!%@ is going on here..
I flashed my bios to 1.3 earlier on and have all the latest driver versions.
The strange thing is: When it appears to have powered down my mouse still has its light on.. but then I pull the cable and replug and it turns on.. without doing so after it reboots itself and I try to turn it back on I just hear a phut phut from the hdd and the mouse comes on and the screen does not display anything.. Check Signal Cable - Monitor Is OK.
    -.- Doh. Help!! Please?  ;(
Oh and P.S: I haven't overclocked and have set the BIOS settings to default already.

Ok after trying alot of things including a format to check if it was a software problem I am still having this problem.
I'm beginning to think that this sound is relative to the one in a 6 page thread over in the nvidia/sis boards forum. People were experiencing problems when they connected the extra 4-pin power.. like having a strange buzzing/screeching/humming oscillation type noise whenever they scrolled the mouse or the screen refreshed to a new image. So last night I tried to unplug the 4-pin power (as I heard it was optional) and turned the PC on.. and I could hear everything revving up getting ready for startup but the monitor wouldn't come on (yes I checked the signal cable and my gfx card does work) and the devices didn't make the accustomed noise they did when they reached Windows (so i'm assuming it didn't even boot into windows with the screen off). MSI were talking about this being a bad power issue.. so if somebody can confirm this for me..
Bad PSU caused a circuit/power problem with the MSI865PE Neo2-LS when making use of the 4-pin power causing weird sounds and oscillations whenever I scroll/play games/do anything taxing in Windows and leading to a shutdown when whatever's causing the oscillations gets too intense.
Hope someone replies seeing as this thread is quite old :\

  • K7T Turbo2(MS-6330 V5) AGP Features FAQ

    Hi! I'm using K7T Turbo2(MS-6330 Ver5.0) motherboard and just bought an MSI Geforce4 MX440 64MB DDR (MS-8878 SE).
When I run some benchmarking program (eg. 3D Mark 2001), the status of sideband addressing (SBA) and fastwrite (FW) of both the card and motherboard are shown as follow:
    Graphics Card:
    SBA: not supported
    FW: supported but not enabled
    Motherboard:
    SBA: supported but not enabled
    FW: not supported
I tried very hard to force the SBA features using variety of software (Rivatuner, PowerStrip), but all failed.
Experts here, do you think it is possible to force on either (or both) features? I heard that there are ways to force the features in low-level.
    Helps & Advices pls!
    TQ!

    Hi,
    From MSI,
Enabling SBA & FW didnt really add much to the performance. There might be potential compatibility & stability issue when enabling SBA & FW. So we will not let be enabled
After more clarification, this explanation is for both motherboard and display card of yours!
