FX5900Nu: msi x gainward x Bios and why ppl flash their cards.

I have a gainward fx5900 1100 400/700 2.8ns 128 and I cut off some board tracks testing water cooling fittings (more like drunk friend nests board on top of cutting tools).
Anyway, it's the simplest fx5900Nu model from gainward.
I had to finish the tests with the cooler, so I went out and bought a "MSI SUPERIOR PRODUCT fx5900sp vdt256".
I also have an old MSIti4600 4x and its a totally awsome board, so I though the SP would be great too. It's also has similar clock/mem specs 2.8 as the gainward, exept for the memory size. Before bothering to dismantle the huge cooler from the Msi I ran tests so I could compare both boards "stock cooled".
I tested both with 56.55 and these are my "results":
With the gainward I was able to IN AN EASY WAY to find ZILLIONS OF BIOS FILES, and they are nice ppl too, they write a little bat file so all u have to do to flash the bios is SIMPLY type : flash -> enter and it's done . If you try to flash to a diferent model they prompt you to confirm..DoNe...u dont have to D.O.S. your way into Nvflash wich is also a dread to less experienced users. (I wont even mention my feelings about Msi's "live update" feature)
Boot a floppy, type "flash", Boot.
30 seconds later I'm back into windows with the new bios.
I flashed 2 5950U , 2 5900U and FIVE 5900Nu bios files thus finding the best set for my card (one of the 5 5900nu testeds) increasing the card's performance at least 20~30% default AND overclocked.
Getting scores like 55k Aniso off/50k Aniso on  Aquamark, 6,8k Fm2k3 , 19k 3dm2001se...etc just from changing bios was great, that stock cooled with Agp4x on a 533 p4 3.06 @ 3.6 512 + rambus 1250mhz almost 2 year old setup.
Similar performance with temperature drops were obtained using both 5950 roms, but overall 2 of the bios writen for Nu's were absolutely perfect.
I could EASILY take it from the original 400/700 to 510/970 benching @ 507/960 without artifacts and rock solid, even with the crappy stock aluminum cooler (wich is the reason for the watercooler, that board DESERVES a Watercooling kit.).
Msi Superior Product:
Now I just finished "testing" the Msi's SP :
- Could not raise the memory past 820 without artifacts and didn't even test that for too long.
- The core would quit @ 470~480, even with the bios flashed @ 5950 and now i can't even use that bios becose the memory (go back to default bug) resets to 950 and doesn't even hold long enough to be downed.
- The scores (@480/850) were ludicrous like 49k in aquamark no Aniso and 42k aniso on...and no, it wasn't performance-drop-for-being-too-overclocked.
I didn't even bothered runing other tests, doom3alpha had terrible locks and bugs (runs fine on the gainward @ maxfps 1024 going to 30 on the heaviest parts against 17 on the Msi)
- Why is it SO HARD to find Bios for Msi's Vga's????...my guess being becose they (Msi) simply don't make them...they do one or 2 (most likelly 1),  and that's it. No further work is done to improve boards performance even though EVERY Nvidia enthusiast aways expect driver AND bios optimizations and improvements FREQUENTLY, and I think it's a real shame...Msi is falling behind while other companies are employing more resources into fine tunning and improving their current range of cards.
The reason of this post is that, as it never crossed my mind it would be hard to find Msi bios files, I never backed the original one and I need it urgently so I can flash the right bios for the Fx5900VTD256 and return the card with it's original features.
After reading about 20 posts begging for various bios (the ones asking for my model had no answers) and pll saying flat out " Why you wanna change your bios?? It's meaningless, not needed etc.." I decided to post these words on my experience on flashing bios, especially after the Dx9 paranoia and I mean..we all flash mobo's bios frequently...
Good bios files and good drivers are a card's soul, I do not care for extra Cd's and stuff I won't even take out off the box.
I care about good performance and hard working on tunning/feedback/updating and I aways thought since Msi had resources to give heaps of cd freebies (and I apreciate that too) it was becose it had the "tunning/updating" part covered.
I also would like to sugest that the all Bios files avaiable for all boards should be made publically avaiable, even if it hurts Msi's image for having less files than other manufactures. As consumers/enthusiasts we deserve to have easy access to all that can be used to improve our cards.
I apologise for my bad english, I'm from Brazil and I hope my post is constructive and sparks an effort on Msi towards improvement on the issues mentioned.
Other interesting fact I'd like to mention is thar Msi's SP has a HUGE cooling solution, on both sides, 1 fan each side for the aditional memory while Gainward's collers and sinks are basically aluminium "full cheapo mode" on, so I find it amazing that the Gainward card is so superior in performance.
So if some kind soul could post the Bios file for the FX5900SP VTD256 I'd aprecciate very much, I couldn't find it anywere in the web and tried the forum search too, but requests for the file haven't been answered and I really need this file so I can return the card as soon as possible or if there is more than one bios for this board I'd like to see if there is significant improvement. Both ones I tested (original and 5950) are plain very slow.

  • If MSI starts a beta bios, then why do they leave it unfinished?

Dear Moderators of this BIOS Section,
Can you just tell me please why MSI simply leave a beta bios unfinished? Like K8N Neo2 Platinum bios 1D2????
I just wondered that point...  When I asked them if they would finalize that version, they simply give the usual answer you give, 'don't flash/update a bios, if it works fine...'   OK, I know this point very well but what they do is ignore  the question anyway....
    Kind regards you all

I know you are an expert on modifying bioses. Can't you please modify this beta bios and as you said, finalise it as a final release and give it out as a 'syar2003' modified bios?
    Thanks very much.

Use it at Own Risk. Make and Ensure PC is stable before proceed. do not forgot to clear CMOS via regular way after BIOS update is complete successfully.(remove power cord from the PSU before proceed with Clear CMOS). you can PM to the_cultie and Daver(which i know its used for sure) for experience and feeback before proceed.

  • [P67-GD65 B3] Safe way to flash 4.2 official bios and why.

    Hi all!
I am still trying to remedy my problem with too high (~1.43V) voltage while 4.5GHz OC (turbo or not) with "vdroop low" enabled. Now I am on 4.39 and it`s ok on (non turbo/manual x42) 4.2GHz and auto voltage (it`s ~1.288V while Prime, etc). I know that 4.20 official bios gives % vdroop settings. I want to try it to avoid my problem but I can not find 4.20 package ready to go with MSIHQ flasher. Actually all 4.xx MSIHQ versions go from 4.3x.
I am wondering if it is possible just to compress "valcheck.com" with 4.20 official bios file and throw it via Mode 1 to MSIHQ(?)
BTW: Maybe it (flashing 4.20) does not make any sense because "%" vdroop on 4.20 will not give me anything higher then "Auto" voltage settings. I think I need ~1,38V to get stable 4.5GHz. Any other ideas?
I could try manual voltage for CPU but I want to stay with energy saving c-states. I am using C1E with my non turbo OC.
I know You can find my problem a bit boring  but maybe forum's Gurus could give me a green or red light(?)

    Just to report!
Yesterday I finally tried to down-flash from 4.39 to 4.20 with MSIHQ. Risk taken  Happily it was success!
But boy ... I should read carefully comments about 4.20 bios (grammar lost). I did not know that on this bios 100% vdroop is not ... How to say it? It is not 100% of "vdroop low" but rather 100% of "vdroop auto". So it not helped me with my main problem. I am now back to 4.39 beta bios.
BTW1: After some tests, I found that while on CPU voltage on "Auto" my CPU max voltage is ~1,29V (never more, it stabilize more or less from x40 multi CPU) while stress testing. Switching to "Low vdroop" I get above 1.4V just from x40 multi. Something is not right. It goes up with higher multi.
I tried to workaround this by Control Center. Switched to lower multi in bios, switched vdroop to "low" (voltage was OK and below the 1,4V line while stress testing) and then bump up multi in CC. Guess what ... Voltage was also bumped to the same (too high) values.
BTW2: I started to think that above problem may be my fault. From start with my P67-GD65 I experimented with OC Genie and maybe I switched some values or even reseted CMOS while using OC Genie (I know that was warning about it). I don't know, but maybe it damaged something and my motherboard behaves like this for good :/
I think that it is the end of my experiments. Bios 4.20 (% vdroop) was my last resort, but it failed.
Big thanks for all that tried to help me . It started 07-April-12:

I have to stay on x42 with ~1.288 voltage or go above x45 with more than 1.43V.

  • Quiet cooling solutions on MSI's new RADEON X and GeForce 6 series VGA cards? Which is quietest?

    Hi.
I am, like many people are at the moment I'd imagine, trying to find the ideal graphics solution for running Doom 3. Say what you will about it, but I've played it, and I for one want to get my hands on it in a bad way.
The problem is that my PC doubles as a crude workstation for digital recording, and my condensor mics tend to pick up even very faint sounds. My current system configuration is: P4 C 3.2GHz, ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe mobo, 1GB DDR400 in dual channel, WD 3.6GB Raptor SATA HDD for OS and apps, and two 120GB Maxtor drives in RAID 1 for audio data storage, and the weak link as I call it, my gaming-inept Matrox Millenium 64MB. (Great for work...terrible for games, as expected). All this is running in the Antec Sonata case, and boy is it ever silent. I have to turn off my supposedly silent air filtration system across the room just to hear the PSU fan lol. It's been very good to me.
Doom 3 is the only game I intend to run on this system, simply because, call me crazy, but I am an old school Doom level editing addict, and I actualy like the tight narrow repetitive cooridor style gameplay it lets me enjoy. Furthermore, using editors feels alot like tinkering with my audio software, a feeling I very much savor.
I was going to go for a HIS Excalibur X800 IceQ II because they are supposedly extremely quiet, but darned if I can find one for sale anywhere on the planet. Lol.
So, I have decided to turn to MSI, who have never let me down with respect to near-silence in the past with their VGA cooling solutions.
    So my questions are:
    1) The NX6800 128MB (non-ultra, non-GT variety) is very quiet from what I hear, when the fan is set to the (default) lowest setting. Does the NX6800GT or Ultra feature the same cooling solution, and is it just as quiet, nearly as quiet, or noticeably louder than the plain variety?
    and
    2) I have heard in general that the new RADEON cards are much quieter than the GeForce 6 series cards. Does this hold true for MSI's X800 cards as well, and is the RX800 XT as quiet or quieter than the NX6800 or NX6800GT, etc. ?
Note that I care more about silence than performance. I would be perfectly happy running Doom 3 at 1024x768 at medium or even low settings, as long as I can keep the framerate smooth. I'm not very picky.
I would be truly grateful for anyone's assistance in this matter. Thanks very much in advance.

Thanks for the reply and the info.
Yes, they do run much quieter in 2D. But are there any decible readings anywhere on the net for the stock X800 PRO cooler (in 2d or otherwise)? I ask this because, let's face it, most reviewers tend to focus on the performance rather than the decible levels (as long as the noise level is tollerable to them, they usualy give scores without going into much detail about how loud or silent something is), and being quieter than the competing products doesn't neccesarily mean it's truly quiet.
Basicaly, by quiet, I mean so quiet that it would be hard to hear it unless I get closer than two feet to the tower, and even then, rather faint or even inaudible unless I actualy put my ear up to the tower. My mics are that sensitive. Is the X800 Pro that quiet with the stock reference cooler? I'm thinking it probably isn't, but I could be wrong. The Toxic Pro of course is more than quiet enough, but I have some concerns there.
I would prefer the X800 XT or, at the very least, the plain 6800 128MB, as they both (even the 128MB normal 6800) score higher consistently in Doom 3 benchmarks than the normal X800 Pro (not overclocked). While I'd prefer a 256MB card over a 128MB one, and Sapphire using the VGA Silencer on their Toxic Pro is a nice touch, that card overclocks the memory freq, which is a no-no with Doom 3 from what I've heard. Doom 3 doesn't like overclocked cards, as John carmack said, and that seems to be true given that I've heard lots of people complaining of artifacts with even moderately overclocked cards, be it the memory or core frequency. I could, of course, just not use the "A.P.E." functionality, and run it at stock X800 Pro speed, and with the silence on the Toxic Pro it would be great...but then why not just get the higher performing 128MB 6800 for roughly the same price or less?
    See my dilema? Lol.
Idealy, I'm hoping MSI's X800 XT or their GT or Ultra versions of the 6800 will have quiet cooling solutions. If they do, then it would save me alot of work making up my mind. No overclocking, guaranteed stability, total (or near total) silence, and guaranteed to handle Doom 3 (atleast fairly well... like I said, I'm not too picky), and I wouldn't feel short changed on performance either. As it stands now though, unless I can confirm whether or not they do, I'm going to have to settle for their standard (but extremely quiet) 6800 128MB.
Any further thoughts (anyone?) given the above considerations? Thanks again. I really appreciate it. Good idea on the Toxic Pro, just perhaps not ideal for my situation.

  • MSI X99S Xpower AC Bios Update Failure

While flashing my bios tonight to the most recent version, my pc power accidently cycled power.  It was updating the "A" bios at the time.  I can still boot via B which I successfully flashed to the most recent just before doing A.  Is there a way to recover A or is it permanent?  B boots  fine, but A just freezes on a black screen.  Any suggestions on what to do will be appreciated.  My pc specs are in my footer.

My BIOS B has the most recent for this board (1.6 dated 2015-01-17).  Yesterday, when I spoke to MSI tech support, they told me to stick the USB drive with the bios into one of the rear USB ports of the motherboard instead of the direct USB port adjacent to the BIOS selector switch on the board, restart my pc, and when I get to the bios screen to switch over the BIOS switch to A, then run M-FLASH and the A should be updated.  I did this, I can use my keyboard and mouse with this configuration, however, after I switch over to the A BIOS and start M-FLASH, I get the red 5 second restart warning, and my pc turns off and upon restart it freezes and does not even start the BIOS update for A.   Hmmmm...  At least I am part way there.  I will try again tonight.  BTW - I do not get a "please set multi BIOS switch to the target BIOS ROM then press any key to continue" dialogue box.  I will advise later tonight my results.

I have no good answer, just a rule of thumb: After a BIOS updae, pull power cable out and clear CMOS.
In this thread it says Kingston may not have EPP settings, but if it worked previously... Perhaps the memory controller didn't understand you had that memory to begin with?
Better ask: Is everything the same, before and after update? Why did you update?

i update to v1.7 because when i first plug in the 1066Mhz RAM, it only show 800Mhz in bios, so i update to v1.7 as the update include "update memory module".

    EC Version:    16GAEMS Ver4.04
    EC Build:        04/26/2012
The real need of this request is to fix the Wireless Connection Drop issue (happens randomly or after waking up) occurred in Windows 8 OS.
    I have tried ...
      - Every combination of BIOS/EC that are provided in the official MSI page and compatible with my System.
      - Every SCM that is compatible with Windows 8 OS.
      - Any solution about Connection Drop issue in Windows 8 OS.
    but still no luck.
The best bet is to use
     - E16GAIMS.10F   BIOS
     - 16GAEMS1.505  EC
Though the problem still persist, the frequency of occurrence is less than other approaches.
Since this above EC firmware is for Windows 8 System, so this is not the best workaround for my system.
That is why my assumption came up with BIOS/EC and made this request.
This problem is NEVER shown in the Windows 7 OS and any Linux Distributions.
Also, can you add any updates possible for BIOS and EC.
I will make a donation as soon as possible after your confirmation.
    Thank in advance.

  • MSI GT70 0ND-219US Bios settings for fastest cpu, and maybe gpu performance?

What is the best BIOS's settings (I have the unlocked BIOS)
For overclock cpu on startup and GPU

Honestly? Stock. There's little to no performance gain overall for the CPU.
You can't change the GPU performance from the BIOS.
If you're asking these types of questions, you're probably better off not changing anything without doing a TON of research first. There's plenty of website out there that detail what you can do, and why, and how it really isn't very effective (especially in the mobile space) just because you can't increase it as much as you can on the desktop space (in some cases).
Unless you have upgraded the CPU from the 3610 that was originally installed in your laptop, overclocking is really pointless.

I was having similar issues with this bios after enabling RAID the hard drive BBS listed my drives multiple times and wont let you change the order, also trying to boot to the operating system would just display some EFI shell. I did't do that. I don't want to boot from the RAID. I want to boot from a single S-ATA Drive attached to ICH8. I just want to have the RAID available in Windows as second drive.
EDIT: I just tried that and moved the Bootable addon-card to the first position. But the Controller-BIOS still doesn't show.
    Regards, Pioneer.
I read about this problem earlier. Some PCIe SATA raid controller did just boot on this mobo. I know that much that in the "hdd boot priority" he didint get any hdds to see from this controller and put option "bootable addon card" to first one. No boot.
He changed to pci contoller -> ok. Maybe pcie problem, maybe not.
I have been my self having problems with SCSI hardware. I got 3 cards, all designed to work with 32bit pci (2 actually 64bit, but support 32 too).
    1) Adaptec 2100s, bad write performance unusable
    2) Mylex Acceleraid 1100 even worse read peformance, unboottable from bios.
    3) Atto U3LS works 100%, bad card :S
When I connect some scsi devices to these cards, mylex wont show any hdd in my bios.
Both adaptec and Atto shows in HDD boot priority like:
    Att168 06 : IBM IC35.....
    Ada162 02 : Maxtor Atlas 4k10_73wls
So I would guess that if you dont see any HDD's there from your card, you just cant boot from it.
Also if you get another raid contoller, i would suggest u to check somewhere someone claiming it works on this board.
For performance issues, refer to my thread, see last 2 posts some benchmark pictures.

My bad. The obvious lack of your self research got the better of me. I do not take helping, if I can, lightly. This is new technology, & a lot of expertise is in short supply. I downloaded the manual on this board & read the bios section, & in CMOS Setup, you should find an "Enable" setting for Turbo Boost. If you don't, please contact MSI Tech Staff @ http://ocss.msi.com.tw Also, (in your manual), is a reference under "Intel Turbo Boost Tech", which clearly states "for further information please refer to Intel's official website". By your original post, CPU-Z says it's an SLI? What did you buy? Does it say on the retail box? At MSI's website, the X58 Platinum (not the SLI), has version 1.0 bios offered in three global region zip files. M7522v1.0 Euro.zip, M7522v1.0 ASIA.zip, & E7522v1.0.zip. J.T.N. is correct, the SLI board takes something else. Are both boards bios's compatable? I have no idea. Recommend step one as to confirm with MSI what board you truly have & go from there.
