FYI: 1 possible solution and cause to Access Denied on opening PDF on network shares with Reader XI

FYI
Hi.
Updated in May to another release of Reader XI.
Got the problem stated in the titled of this post - with access denied for PDF on network shares.
Reason:
Long time error in Adobe Reader with shares and thumbnails causes me to use the thumbnail and preview fix done by a third party. Has worked for years - while Adobe has not seemed to care about fixing this problem ...
That's the real reason ...having to use an almost out-dated fix now.
However, if using the thumbnail and preview fix:
Then its legacy interaction with Adobe Rader is probably the cause of this error - reinstall (reregister) the preview and thumbnail fix - and the problem will go away.
... and Adobe Reader XI is back up with protected mode working - on Network shares ... with the thumbnails there.
Now if anybody is reading this from the Adobe staff ... please add the thumbnail and previews to Adobe Reader?
May you forgot this did not work on shares ... like forgot "forever" ... and meanwhile users got a third party fix they reinstall everytime from the age of Adobe Reader bloatware creating the FoxIt Reader spinoff.
Since then Reader has come a long way in tearms of realibility ... however, the missing thumbnail and preview on shares and x64 platform needs to be fixed.
Then these "cannot" open PDF on Network shares reports may go away ...?

If you have any bugs to report, this is where to do it: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

  • Access Denied Bug Opening PDFs from the DFS in Reader X

    Hi,
    Do you have any timelines for when a bugfix will be released for the Access Denied problems when opening PDFs from a DFS share with Protected Mode enabled? We were hoping to make use of the new sandboxing technology within the corporate environment, as recent issues with security vulnerabilities (in Adobe Reader 9, the authplay.dll issues) would be mitigated by the technology. However, as the Protected Mode does not work when opening from the DFS there is no point in moving to Adobe Reader X from 9.4.1 at the moment.
    It would be good to have a release date so that we can start taking advantage of the technology as soon as we are able to.

    There's no dates, or indications of when this will be done. Thanks for your useful assistance though.

  • Access Denied Errors Copying Files to Network Share

    We recently upgraded to Coldfusion MX 7 (7.02 Windows) and
    Windows 2003 Server. Now I am getting access-denied errors when
    attempting to copy files to a network share (not a mapped drive -
    \\server\share) using <cffile action="copy">. All other file
    copy operations work fine. This has been working fine for several
    months but broke when we upgraded to MX 7 and Windows 2003. Any
    suggestions for a solution would be apprectiated.

    I figured out what the problem is in case anyone else is
    interested. The Coldfusion Application Server service is by default
    set to run as local only. You need to set this service to run under
    a user that has access to network resources and rights to the
    destination path.

    Try going to System Preferences>Security & Privacy and under the General tab...
    ...select "Anywhere". Note that you'll need to use an admin account to access these settings.

  • I'm getting an error message "There was an error when opening this document. Access denied" on some PDF's that I was able to open in past. Uninstalled XI and installed X but same problem. Any thoughts?

    I'm getting an error message "There was an error when opening this document. Access denied" on some PDF's that I was able to open in past. Uninstalled XI and installed X but same problem. How can I access these files?

    I have exactly the same problem. The interesting thing is that the file opens when I attach it to an email and open it out of the email. I already saw the advice you provided in  similar post from Aug last year and checked the security settings of the file and the folder. But according to that I have all rights.
    My OS is Windows 7 Enterprise.

    Hi,
    Please make sure all these file are enabled offline.
    Please see if this article is helpful to you:
    Users may receive an "Access is denied" error message if you make files and folders available for offline use
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275461
    Meanwhile, try this:
    1.Make sure that your files and folder have been synchronized. Reinitializing the cache prior to synchronizing will
    cause you to lose any data that isn’t synchronized.
    2.Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press
    ENTER.
    If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    3.Locate the following registry subkey, and then right-click it:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC
    4.Point to New, and then click Key.
    5.Type Parameters in the box.
    6.Right-click Parameters, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit)Value.
    7.Type FormatDatabase, and then press ENTER.
    8.Right-click FormatDatabase, and then click Modify.
    9.In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
    10.Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

  • Access Denied Error Opens when Installing HP Monitor Software (Windows 7)

    im getting the following error trying to upgrade my screen driver.
    "Access Denied Error Opens when Installing HP Monitor Software (Windows 7)"
    I found this error in the help area but it doesnt address the problem, it simply describes the device manager instalation procedure, which I am using , and which results in the error.

    What is the monitor model number and what is the PC model number?

  • Access denied while opening any PDF the second time / Zugriff verweigert beim zweiten Öffnen eines beliebigen PDF

    Reader produces "Access denied" while opening any PDF the second time. A LogOut/LogIn or restart is necessary to open a PDF again successfully. User works with a PC (Win7). The file is located on the desktop in a Windows 2008/2012 AD, user profile on networkshare. The same procedure with a file located on any other networkshare or locally on harddisk works without error. Analysis with processmonitor indicates that the file seems to load and then is cancelled for some unknown reason. The problem is somehow growing, beginning with 1 PC and exists now also in our Citrix environment (2 users). Access rights seem to ok and the same on all tested shares (full Access or Change rights).

    And how are you spawning the php instances? I don't see that in the daemons array anywhere.
    EDIT: It looks like the info in that page is no longer using pre-spawned instances, but lighttpd adaptive-spawn. The documentation has been made inconsistent it looks like.
    You will note that with pre-spawned information, the config looks different[1].
    You need to do one or the other, not both (eg. choose adaptive-spawn, or pre-spawn..not both).

  • Hello. My safari (and i keep it updated) cannot open PDF files. Should i install Adobe Reader and which version????? I have Mac Book Pro running OS 10.9

    My safari (and i keep it updated) cannot open PDF files.Should i install Adobe Reader and which version????/ I have Mac Book Pro running OS 10.9
    Please help me!!!!

    Back up all data.
    If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, there should be a setting in its preferences such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected. Otherwise do as follows.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
    from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
    From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
    The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others — I don't have a complete list.
    If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
    If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Access denied to a folder; running as Administrator with backup, restore, takeown, and security privileges

    I am running as an Administrator with SE_BACKUP_NAME, SE_RESTORE_NAME, SE_TAKE_OWNERSHIP_NAME, and SE_SECURITY_NAME enabled on my application. My group information is listed below. The item's path and ACL are
    C:\tests\test_acl_null\src\1d: O:BGG:SYD:P
    where the owner is Built-in Guests, group is Local System, the DACL prevents inheritance, and the DACL itself is empty.
    I would expect that since I have the four above privileges enabled successfully, I would have access to the item regardless of its security descriptor. Why is this not the case?

    Do backup and restore privileges apply at all over a network mount created via "net use"?
    The network mount requires a username and password for the destination machine. Assuming the destination machine is a Windows box with a simple CIFS share, how does this user affect our permissions and access? Do we end up effectively impersonating this
    user, or is the access check still done with our sync process's run-as user?
    We require that both our configured run-as user for our sync process *and* the credentials passed to the network mount be administrator users of the local system and destination system, respectively, meaning they're in of the "BUILTIN\Administrators,
    S-1-5-32-544" group.
    On re-syncs, the destination file will exist and since we don't have the ability to read the ACL in all cases (we're running as one user, the file is owned by another user, and we aren't specified in the ACL in any way), we aren't able to determine if the
    file has changed. Is it possible to determine the owner of this file in this case? Preferably, we'd obtain the entire SDDL.
    My proposed plan is to interpret access denied as a difference requiring re-sync, resulting in us taking ownership of the file, granting ourselves access, determining if there are data differences, and then re-syncing the metadata as appropriate.

  • Get-WmiObject to remote computer fails with "rpc server is unavailable" and vice versa "Access denied"

    Hi
    Still learning PowerShell remoting.
    Can access with remoting 2 computers (XPProf/SP3, Workgroup) perfect. Powershell2.0 (running as Administrator).
    Using Firewall ZoneAlarm not Windows Firewall (stopped).
    But when using Get-WMIObject always run into
    "rpc server is unavailable" in one direction and "Access denied" in the other direction.
    Searched the forum but didnt find infos.
    Switched off Firewalls: Still the same.
    So I'm stuck.

    Yo encontré estas recomendaciones que me sirvieron para poder consultar el servidor remoto.
    http://www.poweradmin.com/help/enablewmi.aspx
     Allow WMI through Windows firewall
    All users (including non-administrators) are able to query/read WMI data on the local computer.
    For reading WMI data on a remote server, a connection needs to be made from your management computer (where our monitoring software is installed) to the server that you're monitoring (the target server). If the target server is running Windows Firewall (aka
    Internet Connection Firewall) like what is shipped with Windows XP and Windows 2003, then you need to tell it to let remote WMI requests through2. This can only be done at the
    command prompt. Run the following on the target computer if it is running a Windows firewall:
          netsh firewall set service RemoteAdmin enable
    Como segunda opcion tambien se puede modificar el group policy y especificar que ips tendran acceso a consultar el WMI remotamente.
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738900(v=ws.10).aspx
    Using Group Policy
    To enable or disable the Remote administration exception
    Open the Group Policy Object Editor snap-in to edit the Group Policy object (GPO) that is used to manage Windows Firewall settings in your organization.
    Open Computer Configuration, open Administrative Templates, open Network, open Network Connections, open Windows
    Firewall, and then open either Domain Profile or Standard Profile, depending on which profile you want to configure.
    In the details pane, double-click Windows Firewall: Allow remote administration exception.
    In the Windows Firewall: Allow remote administration exception properties dialog box, on the Settings tab, click Enabled or Disabled.

    I can sympathize with your situation, archerdave1.
    Firewall software and anti-virus software are supposed to prevent things from running on your computer. This is to protect you from malicious software running without your knowing about it.
    If you run firewall and anti-virus software, it is your job to tell those utilities which programs (eg iTunes) that you want to be exempt from their operations. You have to manually configure your firewall and anti-virus software to play nice with iTunes or any other similar program. This is not Apple's fault, and it's not Microsoft's fault. You as the user have to learn how to do this.
    You also need to know how to use msconfig.
    For all the above reasons, Windows computers are very hard to work with and configure these days. I'm a professional computer technician, and it bothers me that people who really don't like to tweak computers are going out and buying Windows systems. They are just too complex.
    There is a perfect solution to your problem. You can switch to Macintosh. Since there is NO spyware and NO viruses that affect Mac OS X, you can ignore all those anti-virus and anti-spyware headaches and just enjoy using your computer.
    Moral of the story: If you don't want to tweak and configure your computer constantly to protect against malicious security problems, just get a Mac. Problem solved.

  • Access Denied when trying to open a file that is encrypted on network share with EFS

    I just recently enabled EFS on the default domain policy and created a new network share, encrypted a file and added myself to that file and tried to open the file from my workstation.  I then receive an error "Access denied", I also tried
    to create a file and encrypt it on that same share and get an error "The requested operation cannot be completed.  The computer must be trusted for delegation and the current user account must be configured to allow delegation."
    My steps.
    1. Enable group policy for EFS, removed the expired certificate that was already there and Created a new Data recovery agent.
    2. Created a network share, created a test file, enabled encryption on the file
    3. certmgr.msc, personal and requested a new certificate, Basic EFS
    4. On the network share and properties of file, advanced, details and added the user
    5. from the workstation tried to access the file, Access Denied.  I can create any file I won't just can't add attributes to encrypt the file or open an encrypted file
    Now if I go to the server where the CA is located which is also the AD server and create share and run the same process it works as expected.  I'm guessing I have to export the cert from the CA server as a pfx and import that to both the server that
    has the network share and the workstation but that still doesn't seem to work.  Maybe I don't understand how EFS works and this is not possible?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    You are correct in not understanding how EFS works.
    When you connect to an encrypted file via a network share, the encryption/decryption takes place *on* the server. To enable over the network access, the server's computer account must be trusted for delegation.
    The server actually impersonates the user and creates a user profile on the server (containing the defined EFS certificate and private key). The important thing to remember is that the files is transmitted in clear text from the server to the client.
    See http://blogs.technet.com/b/instan/archive/2010/08/11/remote-efs-decryption-and-trusted-for-delegation-requirements.aspx

  • "Access denied" when opening report on RAS Server

    I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but I've only been able to open a report using the rassdk protocol from the server where my java code is running.    This is fine, but I was hoping for efficiency sake that I could have reports reside on the RAS server itself.
    My ras server definitely has a Crystal report called EBTest.rpt in the c:\temp directory.  I run this code...
    ReportClientDocument rcd = new ReportClientDocument();
    rcd.setReportAppServer(ReportConstants.RAS_HOST);
    rcd.open("c:\\temp\\EBTest.rpt", OpenReportOptions._openAsReadOnly);
    rcd.close();
    According to the JavaDoc, this should work, but I get this error ...

    Now that I've got it working, I expected that the RAS-local approach would be much faster than the RAS-remote, but I didn't find that to be the case in a quick test that I did.  Is this what you'd expect?  Or is there a different part of the ReportClientDocument interaction that would be more efficient.
    From what I've seen, the ReportClientDocument construct and open() are one of the expensive aspects of the report rendering.
    Enclosed are the results from a test I did:
    --PERF--20 iteration test for 'Test local report initialization'
    --PERF--WARMED UP in 3359 ms
    --PERF--,Iterations          ,Total Time (mS)     ,Avg(ms)/Iteration   ,Transactions/sec
    --PERF--,20                  ,35515               ,1775.75             ,0.5631423
    --PERF--20 iteration test for 'Test remote report initialization'
    --PERF--WARMED UP in 1828 ms

    --PERF--,20                  ,37109               ,1855.45             ,0.5389528
    And here's the bulk of the code that generated those results...
    int numIterations = 20;
    PerformanceUtils.runPerformanceTest("Test local report initialization", numIterations, new Command(){
         public void execute() {
              try{
                   ReportClientDocument rcd = new ReportClientDocument();

                   rcd.close();
              }catch(Exception e){
                   throw new RuntimeException(e);
