FYI: How much room does album artwork take up on the iPod?

I was wondering the answer to this question before I tried it, so I thought I'd let other people know what I found out:
With the new 'get album artwork' feature in iTunes 7, I've added a bunch of artwork to my library, but was worried it would take up too much space if I loaded the art onto my 4GB iPod nano as well (through a checkbox in the 'music' section of the ipod overview screen). It turns out the size required is pretty modest, and for me worth it.
I had 735 songs taking up 3.64 GB, with 80mb free. Adding the artwork only took up about 17mb, leaving me with about 63mb free. Not bad.
iBook G4 800Mhz 12", iPod nano (1st gen)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I did a test on this several months ago, by attaching the same artwork at different resolutions. The result is that the .jpg file is added into the the .mp4 file as is - no compression on the data seems to be going on, judging from the differences in file sizes. There is definitely good reason to keep your artwork small, but not so small that the iPod has to upsample it to display (you'll get a blurry/pixellated image in that case). I keep mine all at 180x180. Since the new video iPod has 240 lines, it may be good to go a little higher. But some images you get off the web are big (and have other problems as well), so using automatic artwork loaders will work against you in this case. Personally, I don't mind spending a minute or so (while the CD imports) to clean up the image before I add it to the songs.

  • How much space does album artwork need?

I have about 15,000 songs in my iTunes library, of which only a small percentage (maybe 5-10%) have album artwork.
If I get artwork for all(or most) of the rest of the library, how much ipod space will that use?
I have 4 ipods, only one of which can display artwork. Roughly, how would all the artwork impact what I can store on the displaying ipod?
Does artwork have any impact on storage capacity for non-displaying ipods?
    Thanks !
    Carl

If iTunes gets the artwork, it will not affect the amount of songs on the iPod.
If you add the artwork yourself to songs, it will affect the amount you can put on the iPod as artwork you get yourself is stored as part of the song file and transferred to the iPod, even if the iPod cannot display artwork.
If the artwork is 200kB & you add that to all songs, it will be ~2.8GB just for artwork.

  • How much room does Time Machine take

I have a Macbook Pro with 120GB HD. I wanted to know how big of an external HD I need for Time Machine. I also want to know if I can use it as a HD for large files (imovies) and have that separate from the Time Machine application.

You can put files on the TM drive, but sooner or later you wont be able to. Time Machine will use up as much space as you give it, so regardless of the size of the drive you connect, sooner or later Time Machine will fill it up with backup information. The time it takes to do this will depend on the size of the files you use and how often you edit them. Basically, the larger the drive the better, but it all depends on the two factors: file size and frequency of editing. When Time Machine fills up the drive, it will delete the oldest backups and replace them with new ones dynamically, keeping the drive full but updated with the most recent content. Unfortunately this will mean you wont have any space to put other files on the drive. If you have files on the drive, time machine will fill up the drive around those files and when you delete them, time machine will use up that new space. Basically this means the free space on the Time Machine drive is a temporary thing that will only get smaller and smaller until it will be nonexistant. The best solution for this is to partition the drive into two volumes, and use one for TM and the other for regular disk space (the problem with this is knowing how much to designate to each volume).
I think Apple should put in limits for Time Machins so it only uses a given number of MB/GB on a given drive, and also make it so the Time Machine backups can be dynamically reduced in size by deleting the oldest backups until the database size is reduced to the desired number of GB. I've given feedback to apple about this, and I suggest others do the same. As it currently is, your Time Machine partition is reserved by the system for one purpose only, and other uses for that partition are temporary and limited.

How much time does it usually takes for moderator approval for a post?
I have a post posted on Mar 9 and it is still pending for moderator approval.

It's impossible for anyone here to say. It could be very quick, or a given book may never appear. As RG said, it's completely up to the publisher in the applicable country.

  • How much time does an AP take to failover to secondary controller

    hi All,
My query is to understand how much time will an AP take to failover to its secondary WLC(Backup) incase primary goes offline.
Whats the heartbeat time for each AP to verify reachability to WLC.
also what is the purpose of AP Fail over priority under each AP. i want to ensure AP's fall back to primary WLC once its back online.(Preemption)

    Hi Matehw,
My query is to understand how much time will an AP take to failover to its secondary WLC(Backup) incase primary goes offline.
We can not tell exact time but normally It takes 1-3 minutes.
Whats the heartbeat time for each AP to verify reachability to WLC.
AP Heartbeat Timeout - AP sends heartbeat to WLC (By default its 30s). Once the primary WLC(or where AP is connected to)goes down, With heartbeats, the AP realizes sooner that the controller has become unreachable.
also what is the purpose of AP Fail over priority under each AP.
First of all there are three types: it goes like this Cirtical...high...medium..low.
***To configure AP failover priority, we must enable AP Fallback feature globally and then individual APs with a suitable priority level.
*** When using both the local  and global backup configurations, the locally configured settings take precedence in the event of a controller failure. If an AP is not able to join any of the locally configured controllers, it then tries to join the global backup controllers.

  • How much time does CATPATCH.sql take

    Hi,
Iam upgrading my db from 9.2.0.1 to 9.2.0.4 . Its been 2 hrs since the catpatch.sql script is runnig. When i queried dba_registry it is showing status as loading for packege & body.
Can any tell me how much does this script takes.
    Thanks in advance.
    Bhavesh

The speed of execution is very dependent on the memory and CPU of the machine in which the patch is being applied. I have seen times ranging from 30 minutes to 4 hours. The four hours was experienced with a database in a virtual machine with 512MB of RAM.

  • How much space does time machine take up on hard drive?

Can anyone let me know how much hard drive space time machine takes up?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Time Machine keeps copies of everything on your system (except a few things like system work files, most caches and logs, and trash), so the first backup will be a bit smaller than the amount of data on your system.
Subsequent backups will copy things you've added or changed, but doesn't delete the copies of the old versions, or of things you've deleted, so you can restore them if you find you've deleted or changed something in error, or something has gotten corrupted. Thus Time Machine will need considerably more space. IIn most cases, it won't delete it's copies until it runs out of room.
It varies depending on how you use your Mac, but a "rule of thumb" is, it needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up to be able to keep a reasonable "depth" of backups for you.
You might want to review the [Time Machine Tutorial|http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#timemachinebasics] and perhaps browse [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

    Hi.
I know an integer primitives takes 32 bits
how many bits does the java boolean takes up. 2 bits
also, would it be the same as the Boolean object ?
Anyone can help answer this question ? thank you :)Why 2 bits? One bit is enough, but I doubt this would be an
efficient way to store it from an access time point of view.
I think it should take some minimum number of full bytes that
are eficiently accessible on a given architecture(4 or perhaps 2 or 1). The language specification does not prescribe any particular size.
Allocate yourself a huge boolean[] and check the increase of size of the
VM, this should give you an idea. Boolean, on the other hand, is an object, pretty sure it's a small one (as small as a boolean), but the overhead of a Boolean[] should be bigger (the objects and the references to them).

  • How much space does 1 song take up if it is in multiple playlists?

If I have one song in multiple playlists on my iPhone, does it take up for disc space, or is there a single file that playlist utilizes once the song is queued? Thanks. If it's not obvious, my objective is to free up disc space.

An entry in a playlist is just a pointer to a single copy of a track, so you can have a given track in multiple playlists and it won't take up any extra space.
