FYI: iPhoto not as smart as Finder regarding filenames

I have a folder of 56 tiff files.
I would like to import these files into iPhoto.
I used File>Import to Library and pointed to the folder of tiff files. 17 files are imported.
I've tried this twice, once with my "main" iPhoto Library, once creating a separate library. Both times the same 17 files are imported.
I can use Preview to view all 56 files.
I've compared the "Get Info" for a successful file and a failed file and can see no difference.
I've tried dragging one tiff file into iPhoto and get the message: "Unreadable File"
I have plenty of disk space available (150+ GB). The folder of files is 56 MB.
While writing this query I discovered the "problem." My filenames have periods in them. Remove the periods and the files successfully import into iPhoto. I can do what I want to do, with minimal effort.
So, no longer a question, but a FYI in case anyone else runs into this problem. iPhoto import filenames are more restrictive than those allowed in Finder. My husband says this is a "bug"
Thanks,
Linda in MA

Sorry but I can't confirm this behaviour.
I can import both jpegs and tiffs to iPhoto with periods in the Filename.
I renamed a file as follows:
DSC.5305.(1).jpg
I can easily drag it to the iPhoto Window and import.
I converted it to tiff (using Preview)
DSC.5305.(1).tiff
And again, I could drag and drop it to iPhoto with no issue.
I can also import both files using the File -> Import command.
I would caution that as the period is used to separate the file suffix from the file name it's generally not a good idea to use them in File names. Similarly, symbols like ~ and / have meanings to your Mac that can cause confusion and are best avoided in Filenames.

why are the iPhotos not listed in the finder?

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Iphoto not opening, can't find pics

    Hi
I have Iphoto 08 and when I connect a camera it does not open Iphoto anymore, nor can I click on it and open it to see the events etc. I am assuming Need to uninstall and reinstall? or just install again? my other issue is where do I find my pictures / events on time machine, it appears when I try to find them in IPhoto library they are not there is there a nother place they would be so after I reinstall I can drop and drag, where would they be?if IF I reinstall IPHOTO will it delete my photos where ever they are?!

You posted in the iPhoto '09 forum - I will request that the thread be moved to the iPhoto '08 forum. No need to repost
I have Iphoto 08 and when I connect a camera it does not open Iphoto anymore,
Does your camera mount to the desktop?
    Have you tried image capture?
nor can I click on it and open it to see the events etc.
"click on it" - the camera? the iPhoto icon in the Dock? the iPhoto application in the applications folder?
What are you doing and what does happen?
I am assuming Need to uninstall and reinstall? or just install again?
Possibly - possible not - please tell us more about what is happening and what you are doing
my other issue is where do I find my pictures / events on time machine,
Open iPhoto and use the browse backup command (file menu ==> browse backups)
it appears when I try to find them in IPhoto library they are not there
It is not advised to be mucking around in the iPhoto library - it is best to use iPhoto to mange the library database - it is sensitive to external changes
is there a nother place they would be so after I reinstall I can drop and drag, where would they be?
Your photos are in the iPhoto library - by default in the pictures folder - but again it is recommended that you do not go into the iPhoto library using the finder
if IF I reinstall IPHOTO will it delete my photos where ever they are?!
No - the library is not affected by installing the application

  • IPhoto 08 not recognizing smart playlists

Been trying to make a slideshow and play from my Christmas playlist (Smart Album of Christmas Genre music) and iPhoto 08 either can't find the music or just doesn't play it. If I pick an individual song it seems to work. And hypothetically, if I did get it to work, can you shuffle the order of the songs played?
I'm also trying to figure out the advantage to Front Row over just playing a slideshow from iPhoto.

    elenting:
In a quick test slideshow I was able to select a Smart Album and use it in a slideshow. However, you can't randomize the photos that way. If you click on an album and then on the play button at the bottom of the window you can set your play and music settings and one of the settings is to randomize the slides. If you save your settings that albums will always have those slideshow settings.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • I really do not like the new Photos app.  My iPhoto app is disabled in Finder.  How can I go back to iPhoto?

My system just updated to OS X 10.10.3 and now Photos has replaced iPhoto.  My iPhoto has been disabled in Finder.  I really DO NOT like Photos.  Photos are no longer organized into "Events" and my Events labels are gone.  I also am not able to share photos via e-mail.  I tried to update iPhoto through the App Store, but got the message that it is not available in the US.  Then I got a message that said it was temporarily not available.  How can I get iPhoto back?

now Photos has replaced iPhoto.  My iPhoto has been disabled in Finder.
No, Photos did not replace iPhoto. It did not disable iPhoto. You updated to 10.10.3 before updating iPhoto to version that was compatible with Yosemite. That is why your older version is disabled.

  • IPhoto not recognizing keywords created in CS3

I've added keywords to files (both psds and jpegs) I've created in Photoshop and Bridge (CS3). If I look at the file info in Finder, the keywords are there. But when I look at the info of the file in iPhoto, the keywords don't show. Also when I create a Smart Album to match the keywords, nothing shows.
    Any ideas?

You shouldn't reverse engineer answers from your initial hypothesis
Not what I did. I searched on Google and found only references to jpeg and tiff supporting IPTC and none to psd. Have you tried that? I'm not sure that the Finder supports IPTC data, only limited Exif.
Why would photoshop be writing for the benefit of the Apple operating system when it's cross platform?
Because they're nice people? Or because both Oses support basic metadata comments?

  • IPhoto not well designed?

Hi group, I've just posed this feedback to Apple about iPhoto. You'll notice that I'm pretty disappointed with the product but I'll appreciate any hints and constructive feedback from you.
The more I try to use iPhoto, the more I find it unusable.
    Not everything is an event!
It is very difficult and time consuming to organize my 10,000+ photos in any meaningful sets of these so-called events. That idea is great: being able to 'skim' over a graphical gismo that shows the photos is contains and all, but it is only a gimmick! I have pictures of my kids, of my houses, of my holidays, of my things... I mean, how do I classify pictures of my cat into a stand-alone root event? That doesn't make sense! I have about 380 pictures of my houses nicely ordered by house and room... If I wanted (and I do want to) to import that into iPhoto it would create about 30 separate events called 'Bathroom' or 'Garden'... Are these events? Obviously not... At the moment, there are classified in folders and sub folders, logically. The only way I can get close to that is by recreating by hand the folder hierarchy in iPhoto, create an album in each folder representing the house and group all the rooms of the same house under the same event so that it doesn't clutter the event list. That's a lot of work for very little gain.
As for my kids photos, they are organized be 'events' (I called them mini-albums) which are by date and by subject which are not date-specific. For my mini-albums, Events are great but for the rest events are just not logical.
It's only for specific things such as holidays or family events that they sort of make sense. But again, it would be nice if they wouldn't get thrown together on the screen without a way of grouping them logically (and I mean grouping, not ordering).
Also, why aren't events accessible from the left pane, like in iMovie for instance? Is consistency not needed between Apple applications of the same iLife suite? I would happily get rid of the skimming if I could get my events on the left pane, a thumbnails pane and a preview pane (so without preview pane it's also ok).
The more I've been thinking about it, the more I believe that the Events idea is disastrous and that a more familiar folder/sub folder concept would have been the way to go to make this application the best one on the market.
Canon used to have an application called ZoomBrowser, it was the easiest and clearest photo organizing application. iPhoto is only a step away from the concept used in this app. The way it stands, iPhoto begs you to just dump all your photos in one huge meaningless event and use the other facilities to classify and order them.
It's counterproductive and far from being intuitive.
    <<<<
If anyone has suggestions such as a better photo organizer program (not Aperture...) or how tos, any help appreciated.

Well that is OT's preferred method of working, but then he actually uses iView as his primary photo organiser. But it certainly is not necessary to rename the files before importing.
With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
A key rule of thumb with iPhoto: there is never a need to access the files in the iPhoto Library via the Finder - there never has been with any version of the app, and every time you do you risk damaging the library.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. Or, again with 10.5, you access the iPhoto Library from within the new Message window:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
All of these are faster and safer than rooting around in the old iPhoto Library Folder.
    As to editing:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. +This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.+

  • Iphoto library icon in finder now shows as iphoto.app so cannot use finder

I used to be able to use finder to go to my iphoto library and then view each sub-folder for various rolls. Finder showed these by year and also originals versus modified versions. Somehow this iphoto folder is now linked to the iphoto.app so I cannot see the rolls in finder, it automatically takes me into iphoto. Did something change in iphoto or perhaps Leopard to cause this change to the folder properties or is it possible I somehow changed this accidentally? My library seems okay when viewed from Iphoto, but I cannot view the folder structure in finder so it is driving me nuts. Thanks!

  • Pictures from iphoto not available in pictures folder

I have downloded pictures from my camera to iphoto 08. I have events & albums created. When I'm on other websites or even in Word (Office: Mac), I can't attach or insert a picture from here. When I go to my pictures folder, I click on iphoto library & either nothing happens (an iphoto icon comes up, but none of my pictures), or, when I'm in Word, clicking on iphoto library isn't an option (I can only click on photo booth). How can I make my personal pictures available to send as attachments?

There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.

  • Iphoto Not keeping my imported photos

When I import photos into iphoto from the SD card, once I exit/quit the application and reopen it. The photos are ANYWHERE in Iphoto, not even in the trash can, or in last import, last 12 months. I can't find them anywhere in Iphoto, they are been moved to the hard drive/in the documents area. I don't know how this is happening, I don't know what to do. It's never done this before. Please help! Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A +Managed library+, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
A +Referenced Library+ is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Iphoto not recognising jpeg file

I have a Sony Nex-5r camera.  Up until yesterday I could upload photos from camera to iphoto not a problem.  For no reason that I can pinpoint iphoto now comes up with a mesage stating that the files are not in a recognisable format and I can't transfer them from my camera.  I use a usb cable to conntect to my Mac.

It's a minor database glitch, so let's repair the existing library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto not showing some pictures?

Hello. I have a slight problem. Some photos in iphoto will not show up. They are like a grey box with a "!" in them. I just rebuilt the thumbnails and they're still not there. Now I'm doing the longer rebuild. I did save the pictures to a dvd just incase (but this was while the pictures were still gone, so those pics are not saved) But I did not save my videos I have. Is rebuilding something else going to get those pictures back? And if so would I loose anything on my library. (Most importantly, my videos.) Thanks for the help in advance!

The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder.
Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose the top three options.

  • IPhoto: copying from library to finder

    Hi everybody,
How do i copy pictures from iPhoto library to Finder?
For all of my pics option "copy" (cmd+c) is available. I do it. Cmd+c from iPhoto, than cmd+v in Finder - voile- pic copied.
Some pics are copied this way. Most is not. For those pics, i press copy, the "edit" on top of the screen blinks for a sec, than i cmd+v in finder and the pic is not copied. Nothing hapens.
There is no rule. Some of the pics from one album copy, some won't.
I own macbook late 2008 with Mavericks. In iPhoto preferences i checked copy pics to iPhoto library.
Thanks in advance for your support.
