FYI...PowerMac G5 (June 2004), Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 Model: M9454LL/A

All issues I've posted were a result of a CPU (CPU0) continually failing sortly after initial start up, the G5 would freeze and all fans would soon after ramp to full speed. After multiple attempts to resart the issues would progress to no start chime, no video and fans would ramp to full speed.
I replaced the a failing CPU (CPU0)...performed Thermal Calibration...G5 runs as new!
I THANK YOU ALL for your assistance!
Peace.

I would like to add...I purchased this G5 new in 2004...this issue started about two months ago...I've had NO other problems!

  • 3d card options for June 2004 Dual 2.0mhz G5: Redux

Hi! Back in March, I posted an inquiry in this archived thread and got some good responses...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=893370&tstart=0
Except that the recommended card I have since then waited and waited to order, without any sign of it ever being released! Is there now a better answer to this question, or perhaps does someone know anything else about this card's shipping delay? Original inquiry was:
Hi; I have a June 2004 Dual 2.0mhz G5, and I'd really like to upgrade its graphics card, to get the most I can out of the now-aging machine. I really have little idea what my options are, so I'm throwing myself on the expertise and advice of any here who may have a thought.
Currently it's got a Chipset Model: GeForce FX 5200 (64mb) on the 8x AGP bus. I know I have PCI slots, but my hunch is that I will get better options for the DVI out if I stick with AGP. I don't even know if a standard-issue AGP card for the PC will work. I don't know whether to try for ATI or nVidia (ATI looks like it only has 'special edition' cards for the Macs and I don't know that I trust the drivers). So I guess I'm looking for subjective, biased advice from someone who knows the lay of the land. I'd like to get as much RAM in the new card as I can. I use it for gaming, though I do some 3d work with program s such as SketchUp or ZBrush.
Sorry this is so vague. Any advice is appreciated, though.
    Thanks,
    Heath

Hm; if no word on that card [the ATI X800], does anyone have a recommended alternative?

Heath, not vague at all. AGP is your best option by far. That said I'll be honest and tell you that you're going to have a hard time finding one of the better cards. I'll rank the options from lowest to best.
    1 Radeon 9800
    2. nvidea 6800
    3. Radeon X800 - the best
you need a mac specific card. I would stay away from flashed pc cards because of possible compatibility issues.
I would keep an eye on http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/video/hardware/ for cards. Be very careful if you decide to go the ebay route...many sellers are selling flashed pc cards.

  • Is the geforce 6800 ultra ddr3 same as the ddr and will the ddr3 fit my dual powermac G5 june 2004?

i want to get this video card but there is a ddr and a ddr3 whats the difference and will it fit my power mac dual cpu june 2004??

The Apple OEM versions are GDDR3 memory for the GT DDL and the Ultra DDL.
Both run 16 pipelines and both use the NV4x GPU clocked at 350MHz and 400MHz respectively..
Total bandwidth runs in the favor of the Ultra DDL:
    Geforce 6800 GT 32GB/s
    Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL 35.2GB/s
However, benchmarks show the performance of the two cards to be very close:
    http://www.barefeats.com/radx800.html
The PC versions of the GT and Ultra use the same GPU, GDDR3 memory and same clock speeds, except in the case of OC variants.
The Memory clocks of the GT and Ultras (OEM or PC) are 500 MHz (1000 MHz) and 550 MHz (1100 MHz).
Performance of the PC  version is the same as the OEM equivalent, only port configuration and card width being major differences (PC cards are typically single slot, while OEM are dual slot. This is a negative if one has many PCI/PCI-X cards).
Of course there are cooler variations, but all use either a single or a dual slot Cooler Master cooler.
Both OEM Geforce 6800 GT and Ultra cards will fit in and work in any AGP G5 (yours) with only OS X Panther 10.3.6 or later being needed (Tiger sam an improvement in Geforce drivers).
Of the flashed GT and Ultra cards, the same is true of the OEM- either can be used in any AGP G5.

  • No CD-RW burning on pre July 2004 dual 1.8GHz G5?

    Hi!
After 2.5 years of using this G5 I recently tried burning an audio CD on a blank audio dedicated CD-RW disc and noticed that the drive doesn't recognize this as a blank disc. I tried two different brands from iTunes and Toast. The drive has so far burned dozens if not hundreds of DVDs and CDs without a single problem. Could it be that the built in drive of this model doesn't recognize Rewritables at all?
    dual G5 1.8GHz

Not likely... My parents have the Dual 1.8GHz model (September 2003) and it burns rewritables just fine.
I'd say the more likely case is that your drive may have failed, especially if you've burned hundreds of discs.
First thing I'd try though is a CD/DVD lens cleaner. There may be a lot of dust inside the drive, or on the lens.

  • Dual 1.8ghz powermac G5   june 2004.     leaded or unleaded solder?

hey guys i work in a electronics factory and we arent allowed to take leaded solder products in due to checks done by contracts externally. my powermac g5 needs a little TLC would any one know if the solder on the mobo and other places is leaded or unleaded?
    thanks
    Gaz

I can't say with certainty, and not for all models, but my 2005 vintage dual 2.0 GHz G5 appears to use lead-free solder. It melts at a low temperature, is dull, and doesn't sweat like leaded solder.

  • Where can I get the lastest Adobe Flash Player (version 10) for my Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5?

Can someone tell me how to get the lastest Adobe Flash Player (version 10) for an Apple PowerPC G5 computer with OS 10.5.8?

You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*. The latest version, 10.2.152.25, 10.3.x beta, or later, is for Intel Macs only, as Adobe no longer support the PPC platform. Version 11.0.1.152 is for Lion.
    * Unhelpfully, if you want the last version for PPC Macs, you need to go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html  and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. The first one on the list, Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
(If you are running a PPC Mac with Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and are having problems with watching videos on FaceBook or other sites, contributor Texas Mac Man suggests the following solution which fools the site into thinking that you are running the latest version:)
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

  • Firmware (June 2004) safe to install ?

    Hi,
I have a Dual 2.0 PM which I bought in September of 2004 (Its the one with PCI-X and up to 8GB RAM, I forget if this is referred to as RevA or RevB).
Anyway at the time the PowerMac G5 (June 2004) Firmware Update came out, I hesitated to install it due to reports of increased fac activity, etc. I am now ready to upgrade to Tiger and would like to know if it is safe to install this update.
    Thanks...

Thanks for sharing your experience with this firmware update. I went ahead and installed it last night with no problems to report. Both OS X and Windows are working fine. The computer seems to be running cooler also.

  • Powermac G5 1.8ghz June 2004 - strange issues, what does this ASD code mean

I have a powermac g5 with an issue and I would appreciate any help or input. the machine is air cooled dual 1.8ghz processors. After booting to the 10.4 os, the machine would switch to full fan power after 1-2 mins, eventually leading to a lockup shortly there after. I was wanting to upgrade the hard drive anyhow, so I went ahead put in a new drive a fresh load of 10.4. The same issue occurred, within 1-2 mins of loading the desktop fans would switch to full blast followed by a lockup.
    AHT passes all extended test.
ASD 2.5.8 reports the following error:
    error - PHY data mismatch #define kFWPHYAddressCompareErr - 29055 // -29004
I was thinking if anything, the temp sensors would fail, but the error appears to have something to do with firewire, which seems to be working fine. Does anyone have any insight to this error?
After ASD I reset the pram on the machine by pressing the button on the logic board. The machine booted normally and seemed to be fixed. I was able to install updates including 10.4.11 and use the machine for an hour or so. I then walked away from the machine and it eventually went to sleep mode. When I came back the machine would not wake from sleep. When moving the keyboard/mouse I heard the system kick on and try to wake up, but never resumed video output. Eventually the fans went to full power and stayed there and I ended up powering off the machine.
Also, intermittently, the machine hangs on a grey apple screen with no spinning gear when powered on. I have not seen this since the pram reset, but I wanted to through that out there as well.
Any idea on what could be causing the issues?

Any process that will cause the system to stall/be unable to proceed, would most likely be accompanied by a kick in of the fans as an overheat defense mechanism.
If the system is looking for an address that isn't as expected, it would go on a search loop, which would increase activity, thus the fans.
It is probable that it is related.
It is possible that you may be able to garner further information about what is involved by looking at Console/logs for the processes that are involved at the time just prior to the events.
Additionally, it is proper to run diagnostics several times to confirm the error.
It would be prudent to confirm the error.
For additional feedback on the system components, and to provide validation or refutation of possible memory related issues, use Memtest or Rember to test the RAM.
Apple tests are all or nothing with regard to memory, while these two utilities can help identify latent or intermittent issues.
One other thought is that the issue may be due to firmware corruption, in which case a NVRAM reset may be more valuable than a PRAM reset.

  • Power Mac G5 dual 2.0ghz (late june 2004) - trouble upgrading video card

Hi, I'd really appreciate any help. I have a PowerPC G5 Tower, dual 2.0 GHz, DVI/AGP version (June 2004 model) with 8gb ram. I recently got the Apple 30" monitor and wanted to run it along side my 20" apple monitor, so I bought the ATI Radeon 9650 dual dvi video card (ATI-G5-9650 Power Mac G5 ATI Radeon 9650 Supports 30" Display 256MB (DVI/DVI) (8X AGP) Video Card). I pulled out my previous video card from the AGP slot and inserted this one into the same slot. I turned on the machine and plugged in both monitors to the dvi ports and both screens were blank when I booted. I tried plugging in only one of the monitors, but again, just blank. Does this mean the card is bad? Did I put it in the right slot?
Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

I'm installed an update, not 100% if it was the correc thing to update, but it was all I could find. I went to the ATI site and downloaded the ATI Displays 4.5.7.dmg and installed that as well as the ATI 10.3.6 SW Update.dmg. This was from the ATI site at: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.HTML
Is there another place or something specific for the 9650 that I need to download?
    thanks

  • Powermac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz RAM question

I purchased one stick of 1Gb RAM and installed it on the motherboard, but I didnt know it had to be installed in pairs so the computer wont recognize it. I made an order for a second stick and it should arrive in a couple of days. Can I use my computer with the one stick still in there, or do I need to remove it and install both at the same time?
    Powermac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    dfernandez86-
I am confused so this is probably a dumb question, but how can using 1 stick be configured as a pair?
I would take the new stick out and use it as originally configured. When you get the second stick have at it.

  • Dual Layer DVD on PM G5 (June 2004)

I have a Power Mac G5 (June 2004) and i'd like to upgrade it's Superdrive to a Dual Layer one. Do I have to buy one provided by Apple? Or there is another I can install instead?

The Pioneer DVR-112 is a popular choice. It's available for about $30 here and other retailers.
What drive do you currently have? Some, like the Pioneer DVR-117 are Apple-crippled to not burn double layer discs. The DVR-117 is actually a Pioneer DVR-108 that's had its DL burning capability removed in firmware.

  • Dual G5 2.0 Power Mac (June 2004) referb - booting problem

Hi all - my dual G5 2.0 Power Mac (June 2004) decided to rev its fans and boot no more. When I push the power button in front, the white light comes on while pushing it, then goes off, yet I hear the fans starting, the hard drive spinning etc. The key board isn't getting power (the caps light doesn't go on) and after a few minutes the fans rev like a jet engine...starting slow then gaining speed. I can't open the DVD from the key board (have tried all usb ports). Have also looked through this discussion area and tried many of the solutions provided (reset the PMU, unplug, try different outlets etc.) Any help would be appreciated. I do have Applecare but they are closed for the night.
    Thanks for you help
    Dual G5 2.0 (June 2004) referb from Apple   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Your OS is not loading and the fans default into a speed up mode.
Power up and hold down the mouse button, the cd tray will spit. Insert Tiger/install disk and power boot holding c. (note: use a wired keyboard/mouse directly to the machine and nothing else for now)
In the Installer, select Disk Utility from the menu>Repair disk/permissions. note any errors you see.
If you can't access the drive, it might be dead. I hope you backed up files.
All you need to do is get a new drive and reinstall Tiger etc.
If you can get a 6 pin firewire 400 cable to each Mac and t boot the problem Mac. the hard drive should appear on the other which you can recover files.
If the OS is fried you can do a archive and install too.

  • SATA Card for G5 Dual 1.8Ghz

I'm looking for an internal SATA card for my PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz. I've got a couple hard drives laying around that I wanted to RAID together with my Time Machine Backup drive. Instead of spending hours looking on Google, I figured I'd poll the masses.
Newegg.com has a ton but I want to make sure I get one that is compatible with my hardware.
    Thanks in advance!

The only sure thing is the Firmtek Seritek cards.
They are also the only ones that support boot to the connected drives.
Native OS X support is also an important point.
Firmtek also provides excellent tech support
After that, Highpoint has compatibles, and non compatibles.
They don't support boot, and, but can perform well enough.
If you take the path less taken, and get a card that uses generic Silicon Images drivers, then OS X support, and successful use, is highly variable (to say the least).
