G-5 won't recognize internal HD

I bought an imac in Dec, before I made my first payment the intel was introduced (***** for me, but that's what I get for waitng LOL) Anyway, I've had no problems until last week. It started when my son unpluged a firewire device (3rd gen ipod) with out ejecting it. I got the spinning disk in finder... force quit everything, reset finder. Same deal. looks like it's trying, but stuff won't work. I got disk utility to come up and did the verify, fix, verify (uh-oh) fix again until it came clean and verify said no prob twice in a row. I tried to restart...(Dum-da-dumm-dumm)
I can restart from the install disc, but when I go into disk utility it says my hard drive has 0 capacity and is not permissable for S.M.A.R.T. I try first aid and it lets me choose the disk but none of the 4 options are available. I tried to restore the HD but it wont accept it as a destination. When I try to start up I get a strange audio beeping pattern, like 2 notes, 1 lower, 1 higher repeating 4 or 5 times per sequence, 3 or 4 sequences before it goes to the (?) screen if I try to start the mac or the start up screen if I boot from the disc.
Hardware test comes up ok, I have reset PRAM, safe start, "X" start... it's like the HD isn't there. I have even Firewired the G-5 to my G-4 laptop and started it as a target disk. It doesnt come up. I'm stuck. Help please.

I found my reciept, and Apple care wasn't on it. So I went to the Apple store and bought it again,(not needed cause it was hardware within 1 year) and when I tried to register it they said I already had it and credited my card...Apple can make mistakes, but by-god they take care of ya when they see it happened. The exception is .Mac- I have bought products that have a free year-but I'm already a member. I think I should be able to type in my id and get the next year free, cause I bought it and it gives you 1 free year, right? well when I do, as many of you know, it says "Sorry, that ID is taken blah blah blah..." so if you are already paying, I.E. if you are a loyal Apple customer... And I think it *****. They should add it to your existing expiration.

Windows 7 Professional XP Mode - won't recognize USB external drives or internal DVD drive
I recently purchased a new Toshiba laptop and ordered configured with Windows 7 Professional so I could use XP mode for some older programs.  The Virtual Mode and XP mode work ok, but the computer will not
recognize any external USB storage drives or the internal DVD drive.  This prevents me from saving and transferring any file that I work on in XP mode.
,I also tried to copy and paste the file from XP Mode over to a document file to 7 Professional Mode, but it won't allow that.  It also will not recognize any printer when in XP Mode,
so I can't print out the file either.
Basically, I have no way to store or move a file out of the computer when in XP Mode.
Does anyone know what I need to do so that the computer will recognize the USB drives and internal DVD drive when I am running in XP mode?

  • G3 won't recognize Internal IDE hard drive!

I'm trying to resuscitate a B&W G3 mac (rev. 1) from a Goodwill, and I've gotten it to boot from a G3 installation CD with OS 8 on it, but it won't recognize the sole 27GB IBM ATA/IDE drive I have plugged into it. (The previous owner held onto the mac's original drive.) My drive used to be the master drive in my Quicksilver G4. (I erased and reformatted the drive prior to moving it out of the G4.) I've tried adjusting the drive's jumper configurations, but no matter what, the Mac won't recognize the drive & allow the OS to be installed on it.
Why is this happening? Is this some kind of logic board failure? Will I need to reformat my drive in some special way? Will I see results if I invest in a ATA-133/100 PCI controller card and plug my drive in there?
    B&W G3 300Mhz   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier   256MB RAM

When the drive was in the G4, you formatted it as a Mac OS Extended (HFS+) volume, which is imperative with a drive of that size. If formatted as a Mac OS Standard (HFS) volume, the drive's storage capacity would be squandered with small files parked in excessively oversized allocation blocks. When you referred to using a G3 CD with OS 8, do you mean OS 8, 8.1, or 8.5.1? A CD with OS 8.0 would pre-date the beige G3s, and OS 8.0 doesn't provide support for HFS+ volumes. If the CD has "G3" printed on it and contains OS 8.1, it's intended for use with a beige G3, because the earliest B&W G3s shipped with OS 8.5.1. If your boot CD has OS 8.5.1, then the problem is undoubtedly related to the Rev. 1 IDE controller's lack of support for large drives. A much-smaller IDE (4 - 8 GBs) drive or a Mac-compatible ATA controller card will solve the problem.

  • Macbook Won't Recognize Internal Hard Drive

When my Macbook starts up I either get a grey screen or a flashing folder with question mark.  It will not recognize the internal hard drive.  After researching, I'ved tried everything out there.  Opening in safe mode, reseting NVRAM, booting from Lion install USB flash drive.  The internal hard drive just will not show up anywhere, even in disk utility.  Answers I've found:
    1.  A key is stuck pressed down
Slap the keyboard a bit to dislogde any keys
    2.  Test Internal HD
Test by taking to genius bar and they will test HD for you
or test yourself by getting SATA cable to USB and connect to another Macbook. (Make sure you get the right cable, mine is SATA3 to USB 2.0).
    3.  If Internal HD is Dead
Buy new Internal HD (Solid State or SATA) - Crucial seems to be the best website.  Note, you'll most likely have to do a fresh install of your operating system.
Installation tutorials are online, it's really easy.
    4.  If internal hard drive is not dead, then it could be a bad SATA cable.
I recomend getting someone else to replace this although there are tutorials online.
    5.  Top Case may need replacing (see #1) Not very likely, but very easy to do yourself, you can find them online around $120
I'll have an update tomorrow.  Oh, and a screw is also stripped so it may take awhile to get out.
My specs:  Macbook 2.16Ghz Part No.MB158LL/A (Black)

When a hard drive fails to appear in Disk Utility that usually means the drive has failed. I really don't understand the purpose of the rest of your post. I don't even know what the question is, but I'm guessing you want to know if the drive should be replaced. The answer would be, "Yes."

  • IBook won't recognize internal CD drive

    Hi,
I was importing a CD in iTunes and it got to the very last bit of the last track then the progress bar just stopped (it no longer said how much time remained or the speed of the importing in iTunes).
I had to force quit iTunes. I couldn't get the CD out at all, so I restarted and held down the mouse button for ages, didn't work. Then I checked in System Profiler, clicked on "Disc Burning" and I got this message "No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly."
I didn't bash the laptop about or drop it or anything. It was on a flat surface. What did I do wrong?
Because the CD is still in the drive I can't run Apple Hardware Test. Aargh!
Please help if you know anything that could solve this problem.
    Thanks,
    Jacob

    I fixed the problem!
In case anyone else here comes across my problem, here's how I solved it.
I shut the computer down as opposed to just restarting. This forced the CD to stop spinning, so that when I turned on the computer again after about 10 seconds I held down the trackpad button and the CD ejected and now everything's fine.
    Phew.

  • ITunes won't recognize my internal cd-rw/dvd-rw drive, but my Toast does???

I purchased a new internal cd/dvd-rw drive, installed it, and everything functions perfectly. It even works fine in Toast. But...my ITunes will not recognize my new drive. Can anyone help me with this problem?
Also, I'm able to burn ITunes songs in Toast. But some of the songs have a little lock inside the Itunes logo, and it says I can only burn those locked songs in ITunes. Well, I can't do that because ITunes won't recognize my drive. Is there any way around the locked songs?
Any HELP would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Is there any way around the locked songs?
No, the protection scheme prevents other applications from burning protected music.
You can try to install a new driver/profile for your drive by using PatchBurn (www.patchburn.de). iTunes might recognize your new drive.
    Download the Panther (10.3) version.
    Hope this helps.

  • Envy 17 HDMI won't recognize mutliple displays

I've got a brand new HP Envy 17 j000 Quad Edition laptop.Device manager is showing two display adapters - one for the onboard intel HD graphics and one for the nVidia 740 GT adapter. When I try to connect an external monitor via the display port (HDMI) on the monitor, the system won't recognize it. Two questions:
Why is the internal Intel HD Graphics taking precedence over the nVidia? Typically I would set up multiple displays by this driver, but the Intel HD is the one showing the access ports - and only recognizing the internal connection and a VGA connection (which this system doesn't have).
Is there a preferred connection method - VGA/DVI/DIsplay port? I have the correct display port adapter and a new HDMI cable - both are new.
    thanks -  David B.

  • Itunes library too large and won't recognize all files, just new ones but

still shows the old ones and their location in the library. I was keeping the library on the 2TB external drive. It got too large. Now I want to put the music on one of the 1TB drives and just the videos on the 2TB drive. From my PC, I can watch everything.
I cannot download to an iPod or iTouch anything from the 2TB drive. When I hit max capacity, I temporarily started saving on one of my internal 2TB drives (space wh*re, I know)before I hit on what my solution would be, and now I can only download from that location. Why?
What can I do? I even tried switching the library location back, and it won't recognize anything. I'm screwed, and I have all this material... YEARS of collecting...
    Someone please help me...

To clarify, currently on the 2TB external drive are music and videos. I want to split them up and hopefully save some space - and maybe foresee problems in the future when I hit max capacity on the 1TB external, and think about a 4GB (not the best option I see at this time) or another 2 2TB drives.
Doesn't the Library file just save locations when iTunes closes down so everything should be OK? I mean, the prog can recognize everything, it just won't download to anything, even if I move from the external drive an older movie to the new drive, it refuses to "see" the movie so I can download it.

  • My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you

My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you think it is? It won't recognize any hard drive I put in the machine, so might it be the sata cable?

Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

erased mac book pro (2009), how can i reinstall osx?  it won't recognize old system discs

    Did you try:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you don't have the original discs that came with the computer, then you can install the retail version of Snow Leopard:
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;

  • New Mini won't recognize Apple USB modem

I hate being thick but I can't figure out why my new mini won't recognize the Apple USB modem I just purchased. The network preferences see the built-in Airport card, Bluetooth, Ethernet and Firewire, but I cannot get it to recognize any kind of modem (internal or external).
I figured it might be an uninstalled component (this is the Mini with built-in Airport) and looked through the OS X installation discs, but no. I can't find any drivers on the Apple site for the modem... has anyone had any success with this?
    Many thanks in advance,
    m.
    Mini / 1.42Ghz/airport   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Doh! Upgrading the system to 10.4.4 did the trick. I guess the right drivers for the USB modem weren't in the earlier version to be recognized.

  • G4 won't recognize a FireWire device

G4 (OS9.2.2, 450MHz, 1.5GB ram) won't recognize any firewire 400 device.  No changes made; it just stopped working.  Tried new cable, other devices, other firewire port.  Devices work on iMac, and prior to this problem worked for years on the G4.  I want to use a cd/dvd burner and external hard drive, which have always worked fine on this G4.  Is there an internal card or something that runs the two firewire 400 ports that can go bad?

You can try resetting the FireWire ports by following this procedure, as described in an Apple Tech Document:
shut down and disconnect all external drives and peripherals ; make sure nothing is connected to the FireWire ports
use Apple Disk Utility to repair permissions on your internal boot drive
shut down and disconnect the AC power from the computer as well as the drives; if laptop, also remove battery
let sit unpowered and unconnected for 15 minutes
reconnect AC power to only the computer (battery too if laptop)
    restart computer
verify that FireWire ports are visible within Apple System Profiler
reconnect FireWire drive (only one); refresh window within Apple System Profiler to rescan the FireWire bus; confirm that drive is visible
confirm drive is OK by using Apple Disk Utility and apply First Aid
repeat for other drives, one at a time
The FireWire controller chip is soldered to the motherboard, so that isn't user-serviceable.  If you're can't restore normal operation of the ports, you can always install a FireWire PCI card.

  • IBook Won't Recognize Charge in Battery

My iBook, a Revision B non-FireWire machine, is experiencing a very unusual problem in that it won't recognize the charge in a battery.
Like many iBooks, this one no longer will charge a battery. I purchased a new battery from OWC in the fall and found it wasn't charging--yet one of my two decade-old batteries was still initiating the amber light (something this battery did not). I sent the battery back and received another one, which gave me the same symptoms.
I performed the oft-discussed routines for resetting power management systems on iBooks, resetting the PMU, PRAM, and NVRAM. I tried each procedure several times and even "drained" the capacitor by leaving it unplugged/unbatteried for 30 minutes. The computer still wouldn't charge the battery--there was no attempt made according to the symbols in the control strip. (My iBook runs 9.1 although I do have a copy of Jaguar I could install on it--but at the moment I have the extra space filled with VPC and Win2K). I also tried Apple's battery reset extension.
Figuring I could get away without built-in charging, as this is currently a laptop I only use on an occasional basis, I bought a VST charger. The battery charged up fine. When I put it in the iBook, I got maybe 10-15 seconds of battery life.
The main problem here: *even with a known charged battery, the computer won't see any charge in that battery*. It's fine by me if the computer doesn't want to charge, as I have the VST charger, but I do want it to work off the battery.
Some history, in case any of this is relevant: I purchased this computer new in August 2000 with two batteries. The original yo-yo adapter shorted out five years later. It took about three weeks for a replacement to come, and that replacement was an OWC house brand charger (not an Apple). I depleted both batteries, which were still getting close to their original capacity, during the time between the adapter's failure and the arrival of the new adapter. Neither battery charged on the new adapter, although I blamed this on a combination of drainage and age. I later replaced the power adapter with another Apple, but the batteries had been drained for too long to charge back up. Neither will charge in the VST station, although the OWC battery does.
The computer runs OS 9.1, has 192MB RAM, and has not seen a fresh system install in about three years. It has an Airport card installed and has no history of trouble outside of the shorted yo-yo and the inability to charge/recognize batteries.
I've worked on tons of Macs and have seen far crazier problems, all of which have been solvable, but this one is impossible even for this veteran Apple user to figure out. Every known remedy has failed, and I'm wondering if perhaps it's an internal problem relating to the PRAM capacitor--which appears as though it would have failed in 2005 if it indeed failed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated--although this is by no means my main machine, I still use it for a few OS 9 programs I haven't bothered to upgrade and definitely want to use it without the AC adapter for the first time in nearly six years.

It's a good idea to start your own discussion when you have a different problem than the one discussed in a particular thread.
    https://discussions.apple.com/static/apple/tutorial/ask.html
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
If it's one of the older, colored iBooks, you need to update the firmware on it before attempting to boot from an OS X disc or install OS X (as mentioned above).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1284?viewlocale=en_US
Is the Jaguar CD the full retail version or a disc that came with another Mac? If it's a disc that came with another Mac, it probably won't work with the iBook.

  • IMac won't recognize DVD/CD drive anymore

As the title suggests, my iMac won't recognize my dvd drive anymore.
I don't know what the reason is for it.
I've never had this problem before, it happened a couple weeks ago.
I first noticed this when I tried burning a CD in iTunes.
It said at the top of the screen "Disc burner or software not found..."
I then went to System Profiler and checked "Disc Burning" and it
read, "No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly." I'm not using an external device. I'm using the DVD drive that originally came with my iMac.
If anyone could please help me out with this I'd be very grateful.

Lately, I left my iMac on while I was sleeping. Couple nights ago, the optical drive made a funny noise and woke me up. It sounds very similar to opening up Disk Utility on my MacBook Pro, it looked for the internal optical drive. First, I didn't do further investigation on my iMac.
Yesterday, I happened to do some 'housecleaning' and attempted to slide in a data CD. The drive didn't response, so the CD was stuck. In the past, I had opened up numerous iMacs and they were getting more complicated model by model. I am certified to perform the repair, but since this iMac is covered under AppleCare, I decided to make an appointment with the MacGenius.
I did perform a PRAM reset earlier.
Do you have 'put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible' checked under Energy Saver?
Out of all the Macs with slot-load optical drives built-in I have owned, this is the first malfunctioning I have ever had.
