G-DRIVE mini TRIPLE - 200GB / 7200 RPM (FW400/800/USB2.0)

Does anyone recommend this as an external drive for iMovie?
Is the G-Raid better?

The G-Tech drives are great drives. The advantage to the G-Raid is that is is two drives with an internal RAID 0 so that the computer see one large drive. RAID 0 will give you increased throughput. Whether this is advantageous to you I don't know. It would depend on how many streams of video you are trying to edit as well as how many tracks of audio.

  • Can I replace the 5400 RPM drive with a seagate 7200 RPM drive in a Lenovo B570

    Hi there,
I have a Lenovo B570-1068AFU system that comes with a 5400 RPM HDD.  Does this system suppor 7200 RPM HDD upgrades? I would like to replace the current 5400 RPM with a segate 7200 RPM.  Possible?
Thank you for all your replies.
    Solved!

To add a little to what Tanuj said, you may have a (fixable) issue when moving to the new drive.
Depending on when your laptop was built it may have a legacy (512-byte sector) or Advanced Format (4k-byte sector) hard drive.  Many/most larger drives on the market are AF.   If you migrate from legacy to AF, you may notice that Windows Update has stopped working.  Windows 7 is supposed to handle AF drives correctly, but there are many cases where it doesn't until updated, or an additional driver is installed.  The situation is worse with XP, but also fixable.
You may well not have any problems with this, but if you do I have some notes and links to fixes over here:

  • G drive mini won't mount via firewire 800. usb ok

It hasnt been too long i bought myself a gdrive mini to benefit from the firewire 800 port. It seems that once my macbook gets warm the drive won't mount. It mounts just fine via usb. I've been to the genius bar twice and it worked both times, thats when i noticed it only happens when its warm. I was convinced its a software issue, but i dont know what to think anymore.
Has anyone encounter this issue? Any ideas of whats causing this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

WAIT WAIT EVERYONE....READ THIS....VERY SIMPLE FIX!
My G mini 750GB drive stopped mounting.....I tried a million methods to get the G mini drive to mount and searched a ton of forums but never found this VERY EASY FIX.  Try powering down your computer (imac in my case), then UNPLUG the power supply from the back of the computer....VERY IMPORTANT TO UNPLUG COMPUTER FROM ELECTRIC SOURCE. Nothing else worked for me.
Wait a minute, then plug back in and re-boot....MAGIC - freakin G mini showed up on desk top!
Good Lord why is this simple fix not all over the G mini site??????  It ought to be on the front of the box when you buy this thing!  Seems no one at G mini sites talk about this and people are sending drives all over for repair!
    Hope this helps!

  • Is 7200 RPM HDD a problem for the MAc Mini?

I need to replace my Mac-mini HDD. I purchased a Travelstar 500Gb Drive.
    It is 7200 RPM.
Will I have any problems? I understand most mac mini 2.26Ghz HDDs are 5200 RPMs.

I put one of those into my 2010 Mac Mini almost a year ago and it kicks butt on the 5400 RPM HDD.

  • Does anyone know where I can buy a 750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm for the new mac mini??

There is a mac mini teardown for the new model at this site: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Mac-Mini-Mid-2011-Teardown/6131/1. Here it says that the user can easily upgrade their own mac mini hard drive, but does any place sell a 750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm for mac mini that you know of???
    Thanks in advance.

My source for hard drives has, for years, been newegg.com. They have good selection, good prices, and speedy delivery. Also, a broad selection of user comments. You can find their 2.5" laptop 750GB serial ATA 7200RPM drives at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007605%2060003059 9%20600003340&IsNodeId=1&name=7200%20RPM

  • Is the new mac mini $799 320GB HD a 7200 RPM or 5400?

Is the new mac mini $799 320GB HD a 7200 RPM or 5400?
Meaning is it actually bigger and faster than the $599 or just bigger?

I forgot where, but I read a website where they benchmarked that the 320GB was a bit faster due to having 2 platters. In real-world terms though I don't think most people would notice the speed difference.
If you got one of those fancy Solid State Drives heh...

  • Using a 7200 RPM hard drive- too hot?

A question about hard drives and heat. I've read using a 7200 RPM HD in a fanless slot load iMac may be too hot. What has been people's experiences with this? Does anyone have suggestions of cooler running drives? I have a 60 GB 7200 RPM IBM Deskstar that was original equipment in the Digital Audio I had that I'd like to try in my iMac to replace the original 4400 RPM 20 GB drive.
Also, has anyone added any fans to the inside case of their slot loader?

    Hey Steve,
    Here's a discussion from:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6805878&#6805878
">Other forums say that "modern" 7200rpm drives do not get dangerously hot. How modern is 2002?
Well if it were me and wanting to save everything I could I would go ahead. When this came up before I suggested putting a wrapped copper heat sink around the drive. I would at least put a thermal pad between the drive and the mass store cage to maximize heat transfer. (this is what's done in the eMac) If you did that you'd probably want to do the same thing between the cage and the divider panel.
I would then monitor the drive temp and if I felt it was too high I would go to a wrapped heat sink.
still too high - mini fan scab power off the 12 V supply to the drive.
When this was brought up before I read a study that said that there was no correlation in drive temps and failure rates."
Also, has anyone added any fans to the inside case of their slot loader?
I did this. Mounted a 12V squirrel cage fan in my son's iMac 500. It was just below the upper vents. I scabbed power off the 12V from the hard drive.
It worked in there for about two years but I noticed it was kind of noisy even tho' that's the quietest type of fan.
Later I thought you could mount a more conventional type directly over the back of the HD mounting cage.
However in all these iMacs the most common point of failure is in the upper part of the iMac. ( The PAV board ) Most often this is due to heat buildup and involves the high voltage capacitors and flyback transformer. That was actually why I mounted that fan in the upper section.

  • Question for folks using 7200 rpm drives

Hi, for anyone here using a 7200 RPM drive in their macbook, can you post your experience regarding vibration felt on the palmrest and also what brand drive you have.
I just installed a WD Scorpio Black (320GB 7200) and it produces enough vibration on the palmrest to be annoying. The stock Fujitsu produces absolutely none. I am going to return the WD and either get a different brand, or get a 5400 RPM.
    Thanks for any feedback.

Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 200GB. I've had it since last January. Never a noticeable vibration, although the sound of the bearings/platters spinning seems to have increased recently. I don't find that unusual since that's typical for any hard drive.
The hard drives don't typically produce noticeable vibration unless they're loose. Have you checked to see that it's secure in the drive bay? I've heard that sometimes the little shock-absorbing "bumpers rails" in there can get dislodged in the installation process.

  • Fusion Drive vs Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm

I'm looking to buy an iMac for the main purpose of editing multicam film from GoPro Hero3's: Black Edition. Clips will not exceed 5 min and I'll be using FCP. I am going to get the 27in. My big dilema is spending the extra money on Fusion Drive when I know I will use an external drive for all my media anyway. I would like to get the 7200 rpm drive with 16GB RAM. Will that be good enough for the type of editing I'll be doing?

I currently have a 27" iMac with 16GB RAM and that is plenty for the work I do. I edit short films (any where between 5 and 45 minutes, music videos, and documentaries (~5-60 minutes). Most of the media is 1080p.
You will be fine for the work you are doing. Just make sure you have at least a 7200 RPM external drive to store your media then some where to back up your media/project. (do not edit with out backups!!)

  • Will a 7200 RPM drive boost speed for Beige G3?

I currently have an old 8 GB IDE hard drive in mmy G3 AIO, but am thinking of a bigger (doesn't need to be really big) drive, 7200 RPM, 8 MB buffer. Without buying an ATA 133 card, will this drive significantly improve hard drive read/ write speed over the old ATA drive that's in there now (probably 5400 RPM) when connecting it to the system IDE bus?

The 7200 RPM drive's faster rotational speed does seem to make a noticeable difference, in spite of the slow IDE bus speed and the 66 MHz system bus speed. In addition to the larger cache, newer drives run more quietly and cooler than the older, slower models. When it's ON, my (convection-cooled) iMac 400 is practically silent, with its new 80 GB/7200 RPM drive. I started upgrading my beige G3s with larger capacity (7200 RPM) drives, when "larger" meant 10, 15, and 30 GBs. After upgrading my desktop and mini-tower models, the only audible noise was from the power supplies' cooling fans, which had previously gone unnoticed, because the main source of noise was from the original hard drives. If you check your local electronics, computer, and office supply stores' sales this week, you should be able to find a 120-160 GB drive for less than 50¢/GB. This week, Best Buy has the Seagate 160 GB (PATA or SATA) drive on sale for $69.99 (no rebate required). Although your AIO won't recognize the full capacity a 160 GB drive, it may cost less than what you'd pay for a 120 GB drive. At the retail level, I doubt you'd find anything smaller than 80 GBs now.

  • 7200 rpm drives?

I noticed that you can no longer custom configure a MBP with a 7200 rpm drive? Did Apple drop this drive? Also is the performance significantly better than the 120 gig 5400rpm drive that comes standard now?
    Thanks,
    Jason

    Hi Cheers,
The 120GB is a lateral data drive, and the 160GB and the 200GBs are perpendicular drives. The 120 runs at 5400rpm as does the 160, but the 200 is at 4200. Some say that because of the way data is read and written to these new perpendicular drives they're actually faster, or at least equal to the faster spinning drives that use "older" technology.
    Here is a blogger comment......
There has been a bit of criticism of Apple's failure to provide a 7200rpm option in the new model. But I had guessed that the 160GB option at 5400rpm would use perpendicular technology. By closer packing of the bits, this actually means the 25% slower rotation is essentially negated by the being able to read more bits. While I don't have the data to prove it, I would imagine a 5400rpm 160GB drive would perform not far off a 100GB 7200rpm drive for most situations.
Well, I'm pleased to report that the drive in this model is a Hitachi perpendicular device, and it's XBench disk scores were considerably better than my 1 year old Seagate 120GB 5400 rpm disk (which itself was well-reviewed). While some of the difference is undoubtedly down to my disk being much fuller than the MBP, I'm sure the Hitachi performs admirably indeed. Sure, if someone made a 7200rpm 160GB disk, that would be great. But right now, I don't think they do. So, with the 160GB I think most people will be happy, and it would make sense for Apple not to offer a lower capacity 7200rpm drive. (Not sure about the 200GB 4200rpm drive though.

  • 7200 RPM drive no longer an option on 15' MBP

I just noticed that you can no longer order a 15' MacBook Pro with a 7200 RPM drive. Did anyone read anything about this recently as to why Apple did this?

This has been a fact since thr release of the C2D MBP. No excuse given.

  • Can an Intel Core Duo handle a 7200 rpm drive?

I'm now thinking of getting a 7200 rpm hard drive. The biggest I could find was a Seagate at 200GB. Would a 7200 rpm work in my MacBook Pro that previously had a 5400 rpm drive? I have a MacBook Pro 15", Intel Core Duo, 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM. I want to upgrade the hard drive to a larger size at 7200 rpm.
    Thanks,
