G Drive return policy worth the time?

i may have a bad 3 TB g drive external that i am using for my time machine backup.
i have had some brief correspondence and phone discussion with them and i am wondering if it is worth my time digging out my receipt and hassling with them in the event that this is a defective unit or if it is a defective unit that may be out of warranty.
i realize this is slightly off-topic but i need to get this port to mac finalized and the time machine backup is a critical aspect of finishing this.

thanks. sometimes it is hard to know when to post and when not to. that said, oftentimes if i post what i am thinking i end up getting guided in the correct direction on this forum.
in this case i got an answer on a parallel thread on this issue that has helped move it further along.
the problem has been that i have had a boot issue when trying to access another OS on my mac pro and i finally isolated this down to the g drive. if it is on or plugged in i have this problem and if it is off i do not. so - the solution was apparently (according to the great help on the mac forums) and the somewhat reluctant help from g drive, to reformat the drive.
attempting to reformat this drive when using the zero out option results in an error.
this morning i was told that this means there is a problem wiht the drive.
i was trying to find out how amenable g drive will be to taking this drive back in the event that i am over the warranty period and/or how much hassle i may need to put into this. if it is over warranty and they don't take it back then i got burned for $300 plus at the mac store.
thought someone might have some experience one way or another with this brand and or their warranty.
i will also try the g drive forum as g drive on the phone was not so alert and i want to minimize the amount of aggravation i put into this...

    I received my Lenovo laptop today.  Upon examining it to make sure that all the specs matched, I realized that LENOVO put a dummy DVD drive when in the sales email they specifically state that it is included with the PC.  I called customer support only to be lied to by a customer service agent that this system was not supposed to arrive with a DVD bay.  I even asked her, "why go out of your way to lie about the situation when it is clearly stated on the confirmation email, delivery box, and part number?"  Her voice quickly changed and requested I take photos of the system.  This is was purchased through LENOVO.com.
    I am just curious how they are going to handle this after my second attempt to get this straightened out.  Will they offer to send it back to the factory to install the DVD drive, have it looked at an authorized retailer or lie about it again?  Would LENOVO offer a replacement, exchange or refund?  According to their "return policy", it states that they do so in case of an error.  Personally, I am skeptical about their return policy after reading all these horrible stories of people getting lied to.  
    I have faith in this company and that they will fix a simple error on their part.  PC's are not cheap, so hope they handle it the right way.

  • I have my computer connected to an external hard drive, almost all of the time.  Are the calendar and the contacts backed up when everything else is?

    If my calendar and address are backed up to the "time machine," how can I retrieve them.  When I look at what is on the time machine, I'm seeing the folders that are on my desktop, but that's all.

    Close iTunes. Click the icon to start it, then press and hold down the left shift key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. Choose the iTunes folder on your external drive. That should bring back all your playlists, ratings, play counts etc. You may have to settle for removing and reloading the media onto the device again. That's not too bad, but what you don't want to have happen is your apps being removed and reloaded as then you can lose settings and data. If that looks likely backup and then restore the device rather than sync it.
    If for some reason rebuilding the library the way you did has moved files around then the restored library may have trouble finding things. If so post back and I'll explain what to do...

    No, I do not believe so. Time Machine would keep all those now-deleted files in previous backups, and as time goes by those backups might be deleted if you needed room, but it would still keep one backup from each day in last month, as well as one from each week forever, as long as you don't start running out of room, then just the oldest would be deleted to make room if needed.
    I use a backup drive about double the size of my drive to be backed up, so I would guess it will never get to the point where deleted files being replaced by new ones being backed fill up that drive to the point where backups actually have to get deleted.

    Do you mean you're already backing-up to a Time Capsule, and want to switch to using an external HD?  If so, just format the drive and select it via Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk.  See #21 in  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
    If you mean something else, please clarify.

  • Should Time Machine drive be connected all the time?

    I have just bought a Western Digital hard drive, connected it to our imac via Firewire 800, and started the initial Time Machine backup. As the iMac only has one firewire port that I also use for connecting other devices such as my DV cancorder or my Edirol audio interface, I am wondering what happens with Time Machine when it's hard drive is not connected, which will be when ever I am using the firewire port for other things? Time machine is defaulted to back up every hour which it won't be able to do if it is not connected.
    Will Time Machine just pick up and do a back up when it is reconnected?
    Or, would it be better to use one of the USB ports, even though this is slower, and leave the hard drive connected all the time.

    This might be better, especially after your initial full backup, just so you don't have to be fooling with the plugs all the time, and perhaps forgetting to re-connect. If your incremental backups aren't large, the speed difference probably won't be significant.

  • Why doesnt my external drive show up in the time machine window when im trying to set it up wirelessly

    my external hardrive doesnt show up in the time machine window for disk selection . i connected it to a usb hub it shows up when i do the manual setup but it still doesnt show up in the disk window . any help am i missing something ?

    The supported targets for Time Machine backups are local (direct-connected) disks, and network targets include Time Capsule, a disk hanging off the current-generation AirPort (though not earlier AirPort devices), and OS X Server systems.
    The Time Machine storage is based on the HFS+ file system, so I would not expect TM to work with SMB file services.
    While there are hacks to allow Time Machine to access network drives, I would not consider those to be reliable. Skim the forum and the 'net for related details, and for previous discussions of setting this up and the related issues that can arise.
    Remember to test the recovery with whatever you decide to use; whole point of backups is the ability to restore the data, after all.

  • Query not returned most of the time

    Hi,
    Maybe someone has come across this problem. I'm maintaining, or at least trying to, maintain a 7.2.2.0 MLS+ trusted database that is 25+ years old. Now the scary part.
    When a user chooses a report to use and imputs the data into the fields it returns no results. Yet we know for a fact that the data is there. Also and only sometimes you can run the same report again and voila! input comes back. Another symptom is that it takes forever for the results to be returned. One time I did a query directly with an order by clause and it returned an error referencing this. I took out the order by clause, ran it again, and it returned the same error referencing the order by clause. I think the memory is going on it. It seems that the machine has a mind of it's own.
    This is happening on all my clients and I have a feeling that the source of the trouble is in the server. I checked various parameters such as hit ratio etc and they all look fine per the books standards. At one time all the clients worked properly.
    Any ideas?

    The first port of call is windows safe mode with networking. Not only does this disable McAfee it also disables a range of other tools and products and leaves you with basically just Thunderbird running. If there is no improvement in that mode, restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled from the help menu. Now you have windows pared down to almost nothing and Thunderbird in a similar situation. Hopefully at that point normal Thunderbird activity should surface. Suggestions as to cause really depend on your results.
    Thunderbird safe mode it almost always an add-on but it is a case of identifying it through repeated enabling and disabling of add-ons. At one stage Lightning was causing slowness. There is a security key technology used by the US military that must be reinstalled after Thunderbird or Thunderbird crashes.

    Quick question: I am using Time machine on an external drive next to my laptop. To protect against fire/theft, I want to do a monthly back up on an other external drive which would be kept at work. Does time machine allow 2 external back up drives and remember what needs to be updated on each, or do I need to use SuperDuper or similar to do my monthly back up?

    You can do what you want by going in to System Preferences > Time Machine > Change Disk whenever you rotate disks. Time Machine will keep track what modified files belong to its respective backups on the two disks. However, it's always a very good idea to diversify risk in your backups so using different software for your second set of backups would be something to seriously consider. SuperDuper is not yet Leopard compatible but Carbon Copy Cloner is. You can use the "Copy selected items" function in CCC to do incremental backups.

    I'm just wondering whether I want to invest as much time as it seems to cost to get games running on a 64 bit machine with Steam on Arch.
    Should I just grudgingly set up a Ubuntu/SteamOS install? Would that actually be a lot easier? Is that actually a thing now?
    What's your experience? Is it very much pain on Arch?

    Right, I guess I'll be "That Guy:" The only person who can really answer the OP's question is the OP, given the vagaries of personal hardware and software configurations. What works on my machine with my OS configuration may not work on the OP's. Besides, as Awebb mentioned, SteamOS is going to be carefully crafted to work in a particular way, while Arch leaves it all up to the user. All anyone can say---or has said so far---is that it works for them.
    The Steam runtime is self-contained; if you're running a 64-bit system then the Arch wiki page on Steam can walk you through installation, which consists of Steam and its dependencies (managed by pacman) and the 32-bit package for your graphics driver. In almost all cases the libraries needed for the games to run, as well as the client itself, are installed to ~/.steam and ~/.local/share/Steam, and Steam handles its own updates without touching the rest of the system. Just install Steam on Arch and give it a go. If it turns out using SteamOS works better, then just follow the wiki page in reverse to uninstall the packages on Arch, and delete the aforementioned directories. It only takes a minute to remove all traces of Steam itself.
    Games' data are another matter, though. Some save data to ~/.local/share/*, others to ~/.config/*, others to ~/.*, but every game I've played via Steam saves data to a directory with an obvious name (like the title of the game or name of the publisher).

    I'm traveling now and just noticed that my Time Machine is still turned ON. What caught my attention is that it is still functioning without my Backup external hard drive attached.  It seems to be creating Time Machine backups anyway... and is storing them in an invisible simulated hard drive called "Backups.backupdb". What is this? How is Time Machine doing any backups without my normal designated backup hard drive attached?

    The drives do not show up at all, especially when using Windows. I am using only the firewire 800 port. Unplugging/plugging back in does not help. I think it is a driver problem with windows?

    how are these harddisk formatted/partitioned.
    Windows can not see/use harddisks that are using the 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' file system without the help of something like MacDrive.
    Also when you use GPT (GUID partition Table) with the harddisks, that can prevent the disks from being seen in Windows.

  • Can i upgrade the time capsule hard drive to 4 TB?

    OK, so the Hard Drive that came with the Time Capsule is apparently failing.  I never really worked right, but now it is definitely close to its impending doom.  I have a 4th generation Time Capsule and wanted to know if it is possible to install a 4TB and what brand will work best without a lot of hoops to jump through.

    Yes a 4TB will work.. You want a Green drive ie a low consumption one.. the speed of the drive is irrelevant as they are processor bound so any cheap green from any company should work.
    Do a google search if you want a specific one. I have not used a 4TB but I have used lots of different 3TB and all work fine.. some may have spin down issues and it is hard to predict. ie one firmware revision might work and another not on the same brand.
    Since Apple are not yet using 4TB drives.. there is no preferred one.
    Some people are installing 4TB in their new Gen5.

  • I want to replace the hard drive on my IMac but want to know how to transfer from the time machine external hard drive to the replacement drive?

    I have reached capacity on my IMac hard drive.   It is a 250 GB drive.   I have an external drive backing up using the time machine utility.  My question is once I replace the HD on the IMac, how do I load the new drive with the back up from the external drive?

    So many possibilities.
    I am not an expert, but I have learned this much is doable:
    Buy an external enclosure to re-use you old drive.
    Buy a new external drive at least as large as as your intended new internal drive.  Make it self-powered.
    Download CarbonCopyClone (free download, relatively small).
    Make a CCC clone of the original disk on the new external disk
    Install the original disk in the external enclosure.
    Install the new disk in the main system.
    Boot from that new external drive that has the carbon copy clone.  CCC will be installed on it and it will be bootable.
    Use CCC on the external to directly clone back to new drive you install in the main system (the "bootable" flag will copy).
    NOTE THAT AT NO TIME IS YOUR ORIGINAL DISK BEING OVERWRITTEN IN THIS PROCESS.  YOU CAN ALWAYS GO BACK AND REINSTALL IT.
    Step 1 makes your old disk resuable as a spare copy for "anything".
    Step 2 gives you something to use as CCC for after the recovery process.
    Step 3 gets the software needed for cloning
    Step 4 makes a bootable saved copy of your current system
    Step 5 shifts your old disk to a usable place
    Step 6 positions your new disk
    Step 7 boots your existing install of OSX (just from a different drive)
    Step 8 puts your original install on your new disk.
    Now you have a bootable larger hard drive, and a bootable copy on a drive large enough to save all you can store on your new internal drive.  And you have your old disk to use for "anything".
    Now you have TM backup in one place, and CCC backup in another.
    Two backups is better than one, and one of your backups is bootable in case of system failure.

  • Time capsule makes me redo a full update all the time

    i have the last macbook they made..like the late 2011 model i think they call it and when i upgraded to Yosemite, it will say a lot that the back up failed and i have to erase the time capsule disk and do a full back up from start. do you think there is something wrong with the hdd in the tc?  is there a way to do a hardware test on it.  i can't find anything online about this.  thanks for looking 

    If you have seen that message more than 2-3 times, it is highly likely that the hard drive is physically damaged. 
    Unfortunately, there is no easy way to test it, and if it is damaged....which is highly likely....no way to repair it.
    You would have to pull the drive from the Time Capsule, place it in a special USB to SATA converter, and run Disk Utility to take a look at the drive. A lot of work....and probably not worth the time and effort.
    Best bet is to replace the Time Capsule or buy another hard drive and connect it directly to your Mac.
