G-raid 4tb thunderbolt noise

Hi,
I just bought a g-raid 4tb to hook on my iMac. While the iMac is very silent the g-raid makes a lot of noise. Loud cracking when data is excessed and a constant spinning fan. Is this normal? For example a 3tb freecom usb 3.0 drive is very quite.

My LaCie 6TB thunderbolt drive with a fan is pretty much silent.
I'd be thinking a dodgey drive/s in the box.
Definitely worth asking the question at the point of sale.

    I am having trouble with my G-Raid 4TB. A window pops up saying that I need to reformat it but to first save everything on it to a seperate hard drive. I have heard this is really a firmware update issue but cant seem to locate a firmware update for my G-Raid external hard drive. Any help or advice please?

  • G-RAID with thunderbolt to Firewire adapter

    Hi, I just bought a brand new Macbook Pro with Retina display.  I also purchased a Thunderbolt to Firewire800 adapter with it to plug in the G-RAID mini disks I already had.  WHen I try to plug the G-RAID mini in the TBtoFW adapter it make a regular beep and doesn't mount.  Any clu on why this is happening?
    The drives mounted perfectly on my 17in MBP and it works great on the MacPro I'm using right now.
    THanks

    It's beach use the FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter doesn't provide enough power. I've heard using two adapters with it plugged to both FireWire ports works. You plug one in, then the other.
    I'm curios if the new G-Raid Mini is bus powered by USB 3. Or if you can plug in USB 3 and the adapter to get enough power. I only have 1 TB port on my Air.

  • Anybody having problems mounting G-Raid 4TB eSATA after Lion install?

    I have a G-Technology 4TB G-Raid connected to my Mac Pro via eSATA which has been working fine until I updated to Lion.  Now it doesn't even mount on startup.  Anybody else having this issue?

    I tried re-intalling the silicone image 3124 & 3132... which I had originally installed in 2009 (was that Leopard?)
    no luck! I could give you some details, but still the eSATA drives are not showing up.  Incidentally, they are not RAIDed together, they are just four individual drives in a collective case.
    Does anyone know specifically what drivers will work with eSATA in a LION (10.7) system?  It's gotta be one driver, right? It's not a different driver for every manufacturer, is it? I hope not!

  • To RAID or not to RAID: 4Tb Mac Pro Server

    Hi,
    Hope someone can steer in the right direction.
    I've got a Mac Pro Server. It has 4 x 1Tb HDs and a 6TB Drobo S for backup. It has a RAID card.
    My query is, as I need at least 2Tb space instantly to store Final Cut Pro files, etc. Won't be using the server to actually edit anything, or any other tasks.
    a) Do I set up RAID and get only approx. 2TB of usable space - therefore filling it up straightaway
    b) Leave it as 4 separate 1Tb harddrives (to get most space)and let the Drobo do its BeyondRAID thing? (At the moment the data is all a Mac and on single Firewire external drives).
    c) If I go RAID (it's brand new so I'm at the setup stage). Which is the best option for me?
    d) If I do RAID, should I partition 100gb on drive 1, for OSX and programs, etc and then RAID the rest? I guess that means I have to reinstall the whole system? Or can I 'live' partition on a Mac these days?
    The Mac Server is a fairly temp solution as we're getting a proper SANs this year, but at present the data lives on a Mac tower (with MyStudio backup drive) and also on a few Firewire drives.
    HELP!
    Many thanks.

    1. With only 4 drives, raid 5 should be fine. That gives 3TB (1TB for redundancy).
    2. A backup is more important than raid.
    3. The raid setup for the san can be tricky. Depending on the size, you may not want raid 5, but 50, or 6. Consider: A 16TB raid 5 array will need to read all bits CORRECTLY to rebuild a failed raid 5 array. What is the bit error rate of modern disks? Approximately 1 bit for 16TB-20TB of data. So a large raid 5 san may fail to rebuild. Got a backup? This is why they created raid 6.
    4. I would setup an extra partition, maybe 100GB, on the raid array. Why? I find it handy, if you need to check the disks, you can reboot from that 100GB partition and check the big partition. Also, you can have 2 different versions of the os on the raid array. You will find this useful, when a update comes out that breaks some things, you can run off the older os and you don't have to live with the broken functionality.

  • Need input on-partitioning 4TB G-Raid.

    Have G-Raid 4TB Thunderbolt drive with Time Machine already on it. My iMac 27" has a1 TB fusion Drive. I would like to partition G-Raid for data too. Need ideas and how to. Also will Time Machine backup both drives. Thanks

    Thanks, I don't really the space for data right now but if I put data on it will Time Machine back it up. I am thinking about my Aperture Lib. and thought they would be faster with Thunderbolt but the Fusion Drive is pretty fast. I just got the iMac moved old iMac ( 2008) and Firewire. Have about 650G on Fusion Drive. Just looking for best performance. Thanks

  • Time machine back up to G-Tech G-RAID Gen4 4TB via USB

    I've purchased a second G-Tech G-Raid 4TB external hard drive to use to back up my iMac using time machine.
    But I can't get it to back up via USB, I already have the same device which I use to store all my media iTunes, movies etc & this uses the only Firewire (FW800) port. As my iMac only has one firewire port (is there such thing as an FW800 adapter / hub that will allow me to conntct two devices to the single port?)
    I have got time machine working via firewire which I used the first time as its suposed to be quicker, after all the data has backed up for the first time I tried swapping to the USB2 cable provided but time machine doest seem to see the drive & comes up with an error. If I swap back to firewire it works fine.
    There is also an SATA cable that came with the drive but I don't know what this & there oisn't a port om my iMac that will fit it.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • A question about Thunderbolt Raid 0's as drives for Premiere

    Hi all,
    I've had a browse through the forum, and found some material relating to this topic, but I'm looking for a definitive as possible answer to this.
    I've just left the company I used to work for, and I've begun to set up a small editing suite at home for freelance work. I've always had engineers build me workstations in the past, so I'm a little lost. I, so far, have the follwing hardware:
    iMac 27" (late 2012)
    32gb RAM
    i7 3.4ghz
    1 x 1tb internal 7200rpm drive
    1 x 4tb Lacie Raid 0 Thunderbolt drive
    I'm thinking about going for the classic 3 drive structure: 1.) Internal drive for apps, 2.) 1 x drive for media, and 3.) 1 x drive for previews, cache et al.
    My question then, finally, is can I use these Thunderbolt Raid 0 drives as my drives 2.) and 3.)? I ran a speedtest on my current Lacie, and it was pretty impressive. I just don't want to go out and get another one to find that it's not up to the tasks I need it for above.
    Thanks in advance for any of your help.
    Ken

    Yes use Lacie R0 as the media and cache and I suggest you do. Adding TB devices chained will raise the latency. That 1 Raid 0 will be more than fast enough for both.

  • Is that silly to configure a thunderbolt RAID ext HDD with partitions

    I have bought a WD my passport pro 4TB thunderbolt ext HDD. My original idea is to use the two HDDs of the my passport pro (in JBOD ) embodied through  thunderbolt and expecting twice the transfer rate from that of usb 3.0 hdd, and 2TB one for storage and  another 2TB as time machine.
    Disappointingly, it only provide a barely surpass USB 3.0 performance.
    Hence, I am considering  the following, so as to utilize the Raid 0 setup in order to get a better speed performance.
    1) Part the two HDDs into A1A2 and B1B2 (each partition 1TB)
    2) Map A1B1 into a raid 0 setup, while A2 left idle and B2 as time machine for the my macbook pro and (A1b1 raid 0 set-up)
    3) The speedtest result of A1B1 raid 0 and the indviudal A2, and b2 is apparently ok.
    My questions are:
    1. Would the setting in this way become unstable? and create silly bugs?
    2. I read that Raid 0 demand a whole piece of disk to be used? why I could setup in this way through disk utilities?

    BLF call presence is not yet working and I haven't identified the buddy watch or the lines in the config file that address this
    You have feature.1.name="presence" feature.1.enabled="1" included in your <PHONE_CONFIG></PHONE_CONFIG> It is "generic enable" for so called "buddy watch" feature. But then, you need to configure who's your buddy.
    It is part of phone's directory, e.g. [MAC address]-directory.xml file, but you have no such file. I assume your directory (so buddy list as well) is empty. The file in question looks like
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
    <directory>
    <item_list>
    <item>
    <ct>110</ct>
    <lb>Toby Flenderson</lb>
    <bw>1</bw>
    <sd>1</sd>
    </item>
    <item>
    <ct>106</ct>
    <lb>Edna Abbot</lb>
    <bw>1</bw>
    <sd>2</sd>
    </item>
    </directory>
    The bw is acronym for "buddy watch". Phone directory records with bw=1 are your buddies. It's status is monitored by Polycom phone then.

  • Use my G Raid Thunderbolt Hard Drive in Bootcamp

    I have a 4 TB G Raid with Thunderbolt hard drive that I would like to access from my bootcamped Windows 7 half of my Mac. Some googling showed that it needs to be plugged in at startup for thunderbolt to work and that it should install the neccessary drivers. It hasn't installed the drivers and I'm fairly certain that everything is plugged in as it should be as the extra monitor that is daisy-chained through the hard drive does work. Does anyone know where I can find the drivers or where in the device manager I would find the hard drive?

    Have you tried it without the extra Monitor connected?

  • Thunderbolt RAID vs USB 3.0 RAID

    With a 5 sata drive 10TB RAID, is Thunderbolt RAID much faster than USB 3.0?  With the drives being sata anyway?  can they take advantage of the speed difference between USB3.0 and Thundebolt?

    Barefeats answered some of that. So too did t he large Anandatech review.
    USB3 is crippled by all the USB3 ports sharing a single bus controller it seems and is worse in performance than on say a 2013 MacBook Pro.
    You need to go Thunderbolt/Thunderbolt2 if you want something more than just a consumer level storage, maybe okay if there is only one USB3 storage device used at any given time, might work for JBOD.
    You could also look into ethernet and NAS interface. Someone wanted to use an array with an old and new Mac Pro where NAS would probably work best even perfect solution.

  • Creating XSAN using Thunderbolt RAID?

    Can XSAN under Lion Server (w/Lion clients) be set up purely using a Thunderbolt RAID and Thunderbolt client connections (i.e. no Fiber Channel)? I'm using a Promise 12TB Raid as the repository for my image library and would dearly like to have a two-seat SAN to access from two machines, using a Thunderbolt Mac Mini as the MDC. Has anyone successfully set up such an arrangement yet?

    Christopher Collins wrote:
    I am still skeptical for a few reasons though. One, I only see references in apple's documentation to being able to plug in an apple computer on one end.
    I understand that Apple do not say that the Promise 12TB Raid device will work with 2 Apple Desktop machines connected but there are a few people on the Internet with videos, blogs and tutorials on how to do it.
    If you have OS X Lion on both machines, connected to the same network - for some reason, will automatically find the other machine through the Promise 12TB Raid device and both will connect.
    Christopher Collins wrote:
    Two, there is no switching protocol built into Thunderbolt and if you plugged in two computers into the same direct attached RAID, if it was formated HFS, the two computers wouldn't know what the other was doing and corrupt the data after a minute or so.
    There is no switching protocol built into Thunderbolt, but there is a switching protocol in the embedded Raid system. With the HFS format, the two computers will only be able to work on different documents, you might be able to view what is happening to the document on another Mac but you will not be able to simultaneously edit the same document unless you bank up on four HDDs using Raid 5 where OS X Lion would use localised versions on the Promise 12TB Raid device. This is very simple to do but would need a localising protocol programme.

  • Can I and should I move my home directory to my new Thunderbolt RAID drive?

    I have just purchased a Thunderbolt Promoise Pegasus Raid set to Raid5.  I have never owned a RAID device before so i apologise if these questions seem strange or rudimentary.
    I am running an internal 7200 RPM 1TB disc but I have heard that the Thunderbolt throughput is faster than even my internal drive.  Is that the case?
    If so...
    Would it be possible/wise for me to move my home directory to the RAID?
    Would it be possible/wise for me run the entire system from the RAID?
    Finally, if I keep the system/home directory on the RAID, can I/shoud I  use the RAID for Time Machine Backups?
    Thanks in advance for any thoughts

    Here's what I did:
    Copied my home directory to the RAID (not NAS incidentally, but RAID via thunderbolt)
    System Prefernces -> accounts
    Unlock to make changes and control-click on the account you want to move.
    In there you will see a home directory location.  Change it to where your new home directory location is.
    Restart.
    You know it has worked if the new location icon is the familiar picture of a house.
    Probably a good idea to have a fallback account you can log into in case something happens.
    No issues with any software, plenty of room now on the internal drive ad everything works nice and snappy
