G-Raid 500GB

Has anyone had experience with this hard drive? I was thinking about getting one for my iMac. Wheres a good (preferably cheap) reliable place to get this? They seem to be sold out on their website.
Any info would be great =D

I find a ton of computer equipment for my Macs there. Very useful with extremely reasonable prices. I bought a Seagate 320GB HD for 94.99.

  • BSOD after startup with Win7

    Hello,
After some difficulty I got Windows 7 installed on my Mac Pro. It worked until I installed Boot Camp off the Mac OS X Snow Leopard install DVD. Boot Camp installed, but once I rebooted, about 20-30 seconds after reboot I get a Blue Screen error which says something about a cache management error. It doesn't stay up long so I haven't had a lot of time to study it. On reboot the error report doesn't give a whole lot of info, calls the error "Bluescreen", but it did reference a couple files, I can try to copy them down if it's important (they were long and I only get a few seconds to look at them).
I even tried not logging in and just leaving it after startup, same result.
It's a totally fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate on a dedicated 500GB hard drive. The only thing I've installed is Boot Camp. I've tried wiping it out and re-installing everything, same results. The first time I installed no Windows updates prior to Boot Camp, the second time I installed all available Windows updates first. Same results.
I'm not sure what could be causing this- it seems like a driver issue of some kind maybe, but it seems like if Boot Camp were inherently problematic with this hardware more people would be having this problem. I can't really think of any other factors that could be interfering... it sure seems like a conflict between boot camp and Windows 7, but I don't see how that should be the case. Despite all the trouble I've been having with this I'm normally a pretty advanced user, so I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything wrong in the install process (I've done it at my work lots of times), but I know a lot more about macs than Windows.
    My system:
Mac Pro 2.8 Ghz 8-core, early 2008 model
    Memory: 10GB- 2x1GB stock from Apple, 4x2GB from Otherworldcomputing.com
Hard Drive: 2x1TB Western Digital in a striping raid, 500GB Seagate (the Windows drive), 1TB Western Digital.
    Mac OS: 10.6.2 fully updated
I had the release candidate running for several days off this same drive with no issues back around when it came out (I erased it a while ago), and I don't think I've changed my hardware since then... although boot camp has been updated since. Perhaps somewhat ironically, Windows 7 was officially unsupported when I had the RC running, and now it's officially supported.
I'd appreciate any input, although the_hatter has already helped me out quite a bit... it seems like Windows really doesn't want to install for me! Just let me know if any more information is required.

I have exactly the same problem, down to the last detail, except that I got there by a different route.
My history is that I initially installed Windows 7 x64 Home Premium on my 2006 Mac Pro using an EFI install disk I created using the methods detailed elsewhere in this forum. Installed Boot Camp 3.0 from the SL disk then updated to 3.1. Then did Upgrade Anytime to Ultimate. Everything worked wonderfully for three months.
Then I created some striped raid volumes involving three of the five HDs in my machine using SoftRaid. My boot drive (unlike you?) is not raid. Windows 7 Ultimate continued to work perfectly.
Then I wanted to move the Windows 7 partition to a different physical HD, by restoring a Paragon Image (which I have successfully done on my MacBook Pro previously). First oddness was that Boot Camp Assistant would not create a Boot Camp partition of the whole disk, as I wanted, it would only create a second partition, even with the all the raided HDs removed from the machine and uninstalling the Softraid driver. Odd? I put the HDs and driver back in and restored the Windows 7 image to the Boot Camp partition.
This had the same behaviour you described crashed to the Cache Manager blue screen after 20 seconds. It would boot stably in safe mode so I was able to run chkdsk but it didn't fix it.
Then I repeated the whole exercise but started with a restored Vista 32 bit, and reinstalled Windows 7 X64 as a fresh install, (had to start with Vista as my Windows 7 license is an upgrade), then did the Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate, then applied Boot Camp 3.0 from the SL disk. At this point it was completely stable. Then I did Boot Camp 3.1 via ASU and got the Cache_Manager blue screen exactly as before.
Can't find anything helpful with Google about Cache_Manager crashes except the suggestion that there is some kind of massive memory leak going on during the 20 seconds before it crashes.
I have now repeated the process back to Vista 32 bit which is completely stable, and plan to try again, but this time will install BC 3.0 and 3.1 at the Home Premium stage, which is when they were applied in the very original sequence. Also I can use my Home Premium install disk to try a repair install if problems occur again.
I am only trying to get back to a state which previously worked fine, ie with Raid present, Windows 7 x64 and BC 3.1. It should be possible. I know you can't have a Boot Camp partition on a raid array, but my experience is that it was previously OK on a partition on a non raid volume, even with raid elsewhere in the machine.
Don't think I have helped you at all, but it has sure helped me to write it down! Since you posted nearly four weeks ago you may have solved it anyway. In which case I would like to hear from you!

  • Mobile Video Editing on the Macbook Pro 13'' - Some questions...

This is my first time visiting this forum, and I just wanted to get some thoughts on a mobile video editing setup I am looking to create... Here's what I'd like to do:
    - Use a Macbook Pro 13'' as my primary editing machine using Final Cut Studio for relatively small, but important projects.
    - I want to be able to edit as speedily as possible, but on a moderate budget. I know that keeping FCS on the MBP's main HD and editing video on an external drive is the best way to go. Also, because the fastest interface option on a MBP is Firewire 800, I am thinking of using a G-Raid Mini 500GB drive in Raid 0 for both maximum speed and portability. But I also want to be able to easily backup any video edited on the external drive. I am weary of the fact that MBP only has 1 Firewire port (and in this scenario, I need to connect a G-Raid drive, a DV camera, and yet another external drive for backing up the G-Raid Mini)
    Oh what a pain.
First, something I can't seem to find out is... if I want to load video to the G-Raid drive, I'm going to have to daisy chain my DV camera to it. If the DV camera is Firewire 400, will this lower the Firewire 800's port on the MBP down to 400 as well, thus kind of crippling the idea of speedy Raid 0?
And second, assuming I can hook up both the G-Raid and the DV camera to the Firewire 800 port without degrading speed... what would the best way be to go for backing up the G-Raid? I am thinking of using a USB 2.0 500GB drive, and using some sort of backup automation software. Any suggestions there?
What I'm looking for is mobility, functionality, secure backup for everything I shoot. I should have gone for a MBP 17'' with a Express slot, which would solve these potential issues... but again, I'm on a budget - and can't break the bank on this right now.
Any responses or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
    Zac

    Thanks for the response.
But a couple things... the reason I'm going with the 13'' is purely out of circumstance. I have a friend who just didn't want it anymore, and is selling it to me insanely cheap. Also, I already have extra monitors
I think what I am going to do is this:
G-RAID 500GB running in Raid-0 connected to the FW800 port. From there, when I need to capture, I will daisy chain the DVX-100 to the G-RAID... which will cut the FW down 400 from what I have read. After my video is captured, I will disconnect the DVX100, so I can get the FW800 G-RAID back up to proper speed during actual editing. When I want to do backups, I will connect a regular 500GB G-DRIVE and run a clone of the G-RAID everynight after I finish editing.
This solves a few problems, but it doesn't solve the issue of an external TV for native viewing while editing. Personally, I don't think I will always need this, but my DVX100 does do passthrough. (anytime I do it though, it will bump my FW speed back down to 400) So I can either do that, or I can look into S-Video USB options (which I haven't researched yet)
It won't be the most ideal setup in the world, but it seems like a lot of people with these newer Macbook Pro's are suffering the same kinds of issues. Hopefully I will manage.
If anyone has any further suggestions, please let me know. Anyone else with a Macbook Pro 13''? What kind of mobile setups have you come up with?

  • LCD monitor suggestions...HELP!!!

I have 2 Samsung 910T monitors with my Mac Pro....I want to get 2 widescreen monitors to replace them...I LOVE my color rendition of the Samsungs, they have 1000:1 contrast ratio, and nice brightness....370...My prints look EXACTLY as they do on my monitors...so I am reluctant to change. So I was looking at the Samsung 244T 24" widescreen LCD's, 1000:1 contrast, 470 brightness....so it looks good spec-wise....The Apple 23", which is not quite as good spec wise (but specs are not everything)..The Dell 2407, which looks almost identical to the Smasung...the Benq 24" which may actually be the EXACT same panel as the Samsung, and then possibly 1 30" instead of 2 24"...The options there are the Apple 30" and the Dell 3007 30"...The Dell can be had for about $1300 which is only a few more than a 23"!!! The question is how is the color, the calibration, and accuracy....What is everyone using?

I say that twice, because I have two. And they beat the Apple 23" monitors in performance AND price (Sorry Ken).

  • Need Help 5400 or 7200

Have a huge project that has jumped to start this week and really have no time to wait on Apple for a 17inch 7200rpm computer.
Can I work and edit on a 5400 drive. I would honestly be working off externals all the time.
The project is in HD 720p off the HVX.
    Thanks!

Michele, you can and will do just fine with a 100GB or 120GB hard drive. I'm speaking from experience and know first hand. If I may add a sensible remark please. Most professional editors prefer a PowerBook when moving from site to site or they're affixed to their Power Mac G5's or lately all of the above AND the new iMacs running on a network.
I personally have a G-Tech/G-RAID 500GB along with my PowerBook. You can grab a solution from G-Tech or Lacie for the record. Although
Although it has a 120GB HD it's not the fastest drive available. That's where the 500GB G-RAID (or 320GB & 800GB for that matter) comes in, and with blistering speeds too. Check out G-Tech's their website and check out Lacies website to. Lacie has a 1TB "Bigger" HD and the 1.5TB "Biggest" HD's. Both makers have designs that are supposed to compliment both a PowerBook and Power Mac G5 - and they do just that very very well!
The only bad part of this equation? Apple will no longer include FireWire 800 on the "MacBook Pro" or any upcoming products! Now we'll have to go out and BUY a FireWire 800 Card.
I hope I gave you an answer, but, I also wanted to give you an explanation to. Jim Galullo

  • Uncompressed FW 800 editing with a hitch

I feel like I've achieved the impossible, and I'm a bit confused. Over a year ago I upgraded my system with a new G5 (dual 2ghz) PCIe computer, a Decklink Extreme card, and what I believed to be a G-Raid 500Gb drive w/ fw 800. Some of this ancillary gear was recommended to me by professional associates, and I thought I was putting the package together correctly.
Within the past year I have worked on several (not all) projects in the BMD Uncompressed 8-bit codec (many others have been DV25). I've input Beta SP, DVCPRO 50, output all of the same. Created shows with graphic complexity. And been successful, aesthetically and technically.
Over a month ago the G-Tech drive crapped out on me and had to be sent into G-Tech for emergency repair. What a drag! But the clincher is - it turns out I had purchased a G-Drive, not a G-RAID. I had not given a single thought in all that time.
So now I'm thinking, should I never try this again and go straight to a new G-Raid? Or go back and do it all over again with the restored G-drive? G-Tech says it's unlikely that my inadvertent use of the drive would have made it go down so soon.
    Thanks for any thoughts.

Most of the newer hardware raided firewire 800 drives (like the G-Raid 2 and LaCie options) have performance issues when you daisy chain them. Performace goes from 65MB/s down to 16MB/s. This happened to me and a few others. And only with the newer drives, not the older ones. Older units used PATA drives, newer ones use SATA drives. But it is the controller inside the drive that is the issue. HOWEVER...the CalDigit Firewire VR doesn't have this issue. You can daisy chain those with no performance loss. And not everyone has had the same issues with the LaCies or G-Raid 2s. Seems intermittent.

  • 16-bit PICT file and LONG render....

OK, I read somewhere that the PICT format, for single layer graphics, is the format of choice for FCP. So I have a slideshow of 135 PICT files saved as 16bit/pixel (vs 32bit/pixel). I used an 8-bit uncompressed set up. Again, I read this would yield a higher quality slideshow. Editing consists of motion keyframes and the de-interlace filter. Editing responsiveness was somewhat sluggish. The whole sequence is about about 13 minutes long. I am now in the 8th hour of rendering. I have a dual 2.7 with 4.5 gigs RAM. The primary scrtach disc is a pair of G-Raids, 500GB each, raid stripe (1TB) via OS X. My AM shows FCP using 180% of the processing power and both processors are full green. In other words, everything seems OK. This will be the first time I have used an uncompressed settting and first time using PICTs... but it seems to me that 8 hours + to render 13 minutes is a bit steep. What am I missing?
    Mike

I'm with Shane - if you're using print resolution pix (i.e. much larger than 720x486, you're paying the price in re-sizing. The best way to get maximum performance out of this kind of situation is to resize your pix outside of FCP so that when they are blown up to the max you will use it is at 100% - pixel for pixel. Plus, I wouldn't de-interlace everything - that's gonna cost you and you'll get a poorer picture quality for it.

  • Hard drives for use with Logic

Anyone have any opinions on the best hard drives for both the project files, as well as extra external drives for keeping samples on? I'm pretty sure that at this point, my hard drives are creating more system locks than my processing speed.
According to the "activity monitor" my processing and RAM are definitely not working to capacity.
Is there a threshold where drive capacity gets too big and starts to affect performance, or does it really not matter?
    Thanks,
    -jeff

I've used a lot of lacies but I don't recommend them anymore and won't buy one the next time I get a drive. too many things have gone wrong with them over time, I have a hard time trusting them. I currently use a lacie 500GB d2 drive (the long one with triple interface) for my sound library and project files using FW800. so far so good, but it will be relegated to backup drive as soon as I get a g-tech drive.
I'm probably going to go for a G-RAID 500GB. I'm even considering getting an e-SATA one to use with my MBP using an e-SATA card.. I like the idea of having desktop-class data throughput. and also I've been eyeing off the liquid mix for my MBP, so having the firewire bus totally free for that would be not a bad idea at all..
I've head nothing but good reports about g-tech drives, the only bad thing is that there never seems to be any stock available, you always have to back order. maybe this is a good sign?
I'd second the opinion already posted that as far as firewire goes, g-tech are the best choice for serious work.

  • DVCPRO HD: questions before committing.

    Hello all!
I'm going to be making a few film shorts. Well, video shorts. I've worked with DV. Simple and clean, but I want prettier. I'm exploring the Varicam option.
    1) The Varicam generates a 4:2:2 signal at 1080i or 720p. Now, if I record either of those resolutions to a D5 deck, all that is preserved, correct? OK, let's say my budget won't include a D5 (it doesn't). I'm assuming there'll be a quality hit. From what I've read, 1080i becomes impossible (I'm OK with that) and that the colourspace suffers. How much? HD has a much higher data-rate than SD. From what I understand, this means even a smaller or equal numeric representation of colourspace for HD compared to SD (ie, 4:1:1 HD vs 4:1:1 SD) would still yield a better quality picture from the HD. Cool, but are we talking still WAY better?
    2) Coming from tapes from a DVCPro HD deck, I can capture into FCP via Firewire. Apple says so, but is it verified? Capturing to an external G-RAID is fine, then, too, I assume. Is there a quality hit capturing this way as opposed to coming through a Blackmagic card? With a bit of effort and farewell to some Batman comics, a card is in my budget. I know I need it for critical monitoring (or can I go through my Canopus for monitoring?), but does the card help with capture quality over Firewire-capture?
Thanks a bunch in advance to anyone who reads or responds.
    On my weary way!
    Michael

I have captured and am working with DVCPRO HD footage ato 720p24...captured full resolution to G-Raid drives via firewire. I will be editing a 2-hour documentary at this resolution.
When the show is locked, we will then upconvert it to 10-bit 4:2:2 Uncompressed (DVCPRO HD is already 4:2:2, BTW) and output to D5.
Still figuring out which capture card to get for the uncompressed 10-bit, but for regular old DVCPRO HD, you need none. Firewire capture.

  • Beta SP Capture Question

    Hi all,
I have some source footage for a doc that came on Beta SP tape. We are planning to rent a deck to capture the footage. This was done for previous tapes we received (before I was on the project) and the footage was captured without timecode, the reason I'm getting is that using an analog deck didn't allow Final Cut to read the original time code. I've never captured analog footage before, only DV, so I'm new to the experience. Is it possible using an analog deck (by this I'm talking pressing the play button to play, the pressing capture in FC) and maintain the original time code? I imagine this should be possible, but having never done so, I'd love to find out more before we tackle it. Thanks!
    Austin

Yes, the Twinspan adapter will work in conjunction with the Black Magic card - it is a separate connection that is made via a USB port on your computer to the 9-pin serial connection (device control) on the deck. That connection provides an interface between your computer and the deck that provides deck control AND timecode from the deck to your computer. The Twinspan adapter plugs into your USB port on your computer, that then adapts/converts to a round-end serial cable - round on one end, 9-pin device control connector on the other end to the deck, so you need both the adapter and the 9-pin cable that goes from the adapter to the deck. FYI - AFTER the adapter is installed and the appropriate driver is downloaded and installed, you will likely need to go into your device control settings in final Cut to point them to the USB port and adapter.
As for the Sony 1800, As I mentioned before, it works OK, but the image isn't as good as the BVW series decks. I started out with a UVW-1800 and later upgraded to a BVW-70, then BVW-75. The BVW decks have slightly better resolution and better TBC cards. The difference was slight but noticeable on a high-res monitor. If you were capturing to the DV codec, you probably wouldn't notice a difference, but it is visible uncompressed. The catch may be that UVW-1800 decks tend to be newer - it's hard to find BVW decks at rental houses that are still in good condition. Sony made the BVW-60 and BVW-65 that are play-only, which is all you would need. The BVW-70 and BVW-75 are play and record. Any of these would be great for your needs IF it is in good condition.
I'm running a G5 Dual 2.7 PowerPC (pre Intel) tower, an AJA I/O for uncompressed SD capture and two G-Tech G-RAID 500GB hard drives for capture and play back. You will need fast drives like these to capture and use uncompressed SD video. They have worked perfectly for me - no dropped frames, rock solid at a good price. Others may chime in with raids that have worked for them. Fast drives are the key to painless uncompressed SD video. A typical internal SATA drive will not cut it - not even close.
With the Twinspan adapter, 9-pin cable and fast drives combined with your Black Magic card, you should be good to go!
    Best of luck,
    Wayne

  • Does daisy chained firewires make performance drop?

Hi all, just looking for a quick answer by someone who knows what they're talking about. Will daisy chaining firewire 400 drives together on a Mac or PC create a performance drop? I'm editing a project using 2 daisy chained drives at the moment with media on both. My co-worker claims it will slow down the computer's access to the media, I say it won't. Neither of us has any hard evidence and a quick google search doesn't turn up anything substantial either. What I'm looking for is hard engineering evidence. Thanks!

The firewire protocol allows for 63 or so devices to be chained together.
Running two FW400 devices should not be an issue. I've run up to a eight on chain in the past.
Still, be aware that some drives do not play well with other drives on the same chain. I have a G-RAID 500GB drive that tanks when there is another drive connected. It runs fine when it is the only drive on the bus.
If you are curious, go to the AJA website and find the "AJA System Test" app. It is a disk drive throughput test. Connect your drives in various configurations and see what happens.
    Good luck,
    x

  • Bad Audio Question...

I just imported a song that was recorded for me for the project that I'm working on but when I import it the quality isn't very good as it sounds crackily and drops out at one point. The file is an mp3 and it plays perfectly in iTunes. Any suggestions? I should add that I renedered the file so I could cut my images to it.
    Thank you!

YOu need to convert it to an AIFF. You can do this with iTunes. In your PREFERENCES>IMPORTING>ADVANCED you can change the format to AIFF 16-bit stereo. Then when you choose ADVANCED>CONVERT SELECTION...AIFF will be an option.

  • External FW Drives keep spinning down

I've researched this issue on and off for a couple of months now and am not yet satisfied with what I've found so far. I have a couple of external hard drives One G-RAID 500GB and another modified G-Drive (I recently replaced the original drive an put in a new Western Digital 500GB IDE drive inside).
THE PROBLEM: Both external drives keep spinning down after about 8 to 10 mins of inactivity. Is there a way to prevent this?
Other forums say that OS X will ignore the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" setting for external drives while other suggest that this spin-down is a function handled by the firmware of actual hard disk drive. If the latter is true then I guess the question would then be which drive manufacturer makes a drive that doesn't spin down?
It's very annoying to have to to wait for the spin-up (beach ball) every time you want to save your work. Yes it's only a few seconds but when you have lots of work to do this is an annoyance you can do without.
APPLE: If you are reading, please chime in. Is it true that OS X's "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" setting doesn't work for external drives?
I've also wondered OS X is the one issuing the command that orders the external drives to spin-down. And if so, how do you turn it off?
    Maybe a command in Terminal?
    Thanks,
    Xavier

THis is certainly a common problem with WD drives, especially, but it may apply to others as well. Do you know what brand of drive is installed in the G-Raid?
Apart from the drive itself it could also be precipitated by firmware in the bridge enclosure.
One solution to this sort of issue is to simply create an automated process that briefly accesses the drive before the 'spin down" process occurs.
You will find a page on how to do this HERE (you will obviously have to substitute the name of your own volume for the one in the article).
An easier way if you don't want to mess around at that level is to simply use a script or app to do the job.
Take a look at Keep Drive Spinning which is free, or "No Spin" which is shareware, for example.
    Cheers

  • Digitizing causes FCP to crash

My Sony DSR-25 deck that I usually digitize from was damaged in transit to a recent job so I've connected my Z1E camera to the Mac G5 for digitizing instead. Problem is, after digitizing for 7 mins, FCP crashes, I get the spinning beachball of death and then the 'dropped frames' warning or I have to use 'force quit' to end it.
Initally I wondered if the cause was the fact that, for the first time, I had used the 'DV sp' record setting in the camera to get more mileage out of the miniDV tapes.....but a test with a DVCAM recorded miniDV tape had the same problem.
    I've also tried the usual:
    reboot
    trash prefs
    repair permissions
try digitizing to a different drive
capture and all other scratch folders are all on the same disc
    no windows overlapping
viewer and canvas set to 'fit to window'
I'm in the process of aquiring another firewire enabled camera to try digitizing from. In the meantime, if any of you good folk have any other suggestions I would be very grateful and keen to try them out.

I'm digitizing to G-Raid 500GB and 1000GB drives. I haven't formated either as G-Raid say they are ready formatted for Mac's at the factory.....the 1000GB is a recent addition but I've had the 500GB for years and it's never been a problem.
Since my last post I found on Apple's own support site that they are aware of the problem. They say there is a conflict between FCP 4.5 and OSX 10.4.9 (exactly my set up) which results in dropped frame error reports. They suggest a solution of a software upgrade to OSX 10.4.10 or higher (didn't work) and a workaround of digitizing to the internal drive (didn't work either).
They say the suggestion of digitizing to the internal drive is because the problem is firewire related....and this can also solved by upgrading to FCP 5.......but I'm keen to avoid that expense if possible, and if I did I'd got for FCP 6.

  • LCD monitor suggestions?

I hope I'm not too off-topic. I need a bit more monitor 'real estate' but I really don't have much in the way of resources at the moment. Does anyone have any suggestions/caveats about displays. (note: I'm not using HD) but another 17-20'' would really facilitate my FCP/Motion efforts.
