G-Raid drive disappeared while using FCP. Will no longer mount.

Ah! Help! I'm on deadline to edit a film trailer for tomorrow and my hard drive and all my footage just disappeared. I was using Final Cut Pro (6.0.6?) with my G-RAID 2TB drive as my scratch disc, and while I was using it, the drive unmounted. I tried powering it off. Restarting the computer. Swapping out new fw800 cables. Switching to a differnt fw800 port on my drive. Restarting again. The drive powers up but does not show. I then tried putting the fw800 cables into my other smaller drive. This also did not show up. I've used two sets of cables. I don't have any other cables to try. But it makes me feel like something is wrong with the Mac now. I am very tech inept and stressed about this deadline so any help would be great. I recently (a few weeks ago) upgraded to 10.5.8 and have had no problems. (this was after an intital upgrade several months ago that worked fine until all of a sudden it got stuck on the login page. I reset the pram and pressed C and and a number of things on start up and eventually rebooted from the leopard discs and reinstalled with no problems. just mentioning it in case). From time to time when I have started up FCP in the past, it has not been able to see my g-raid drive, but that just seemed to be a factor of me starting it up too late or out of order.
Imac 7,1
Intel Core 2 Duo
10.5.7
Any more info I can provide? Any help would be great! I am desperate to have my footage back and computer working so that i can make this grant deadline tomorrow!
Thank you!

Try doing a SMC reset, that might do it. Make sure ALL peripherals are unplugged when you do it and plug them one at time, test, next one, test etc...
_SMC RESET_
• Shut down the computer.
• Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • How to disable CD-DRIVE checking, while using a Dolphin file manager

    Hello.
I  would like ask for a help. I have one problem that's quite annoying. It is related to checking cd-drive when using a dolphin file menager. It always cheecks it when Dolphin is launched from K or launcher on taskbar for the first time, again it happens when i close it and open again.
Is there a way to disable checking of cd-drive in Dolphin? This behaviour occurs on KDE with all linux system that i checked: Slackware, Arch, Kubuntu. Look at this:
Disabling CD-DRIVE checking, while using a file manager
I would like to disable it in order to speed up opening Dolphin, launching it.

Udisks2 is what dolphin uses to handle external drives of all kinds (USB, optical, etc).  Udisks is an automounting tool that allows normal users to mount disks.  The permission handling before was handled with consolekit and has now been replaced by systemd-logind (which is much better anyway).  So what I am suggesting is that it might be that dolphin is using udisks2 as the tool that polls for the existence of a disc in your optical drive.
Unfortunately, it is a bit more confusing than that because udisks2 is the replacement for the original udisks.  It is totally different and not compatible.  So I remember seeing a way to turn off optical drive polling, but I cannot remember if it was udisks or udisks2.  But it was done with a udev rule.
So I think if you tried to google for "udisks optical (or cd or dvd) polling" or something like that, you might be able to figure out how this is done.
Edit: unfortunately, I do not use dolphin or udisks2.  But I do have the original udisks installed.
Edit2: It seems that the method I remembered is for the original udisks.

  • Formatting a previously used RAID drive for re-use

    Hello,
I had an odd request from a client. He has a XServe RAID with 2 RAID sets - one on each side - with all bays filled on each side. He purchased replacement modules for each side, and wanted to pull a working drive from each side, and put the new ones in. It was his thinking that he would know absolutely that he had two good drives on the shelf ready to use (the ones that were pulled). Having given reasons not to do this etc., and with many warnings, I complied (after conditioning the RAID sets and rebuilding parity.)
My question is, how do I format the drives that were pulled to prepare them for re-use if a drive modules fails? A simple format with disk utility? I'm worried that there is some signature on the modules that will, when inserted, think it is already part of the RAID, and mess things up.
So, will a re-partition and format in DiskUtility do it? I'll be using a drive dock with the disk out of the RAID chassis.
    Thanks!

Hello, e2o, and welcome to the Apple Boards,
Your instincts are good because the RAID will see it as a previously used drive if/when you reinsert it. All you should need to do, however, is go into RAID Admin and use "Make Drive Available for Use" and the RAID should then run with it. This is a safety measure to keep the RAID from claiming drives that you stick into it without "asking". The only time this should be a problem is if the drive were intended to be used as a "hot spare" because the RAID wouldn't use it until you manually intervened.
You could blank the disk if you want to but it shouldn't be necessary as long as you're aware of the RAID Admin function.

  • Cursor keeps disappearing while using Safari

While using Safari the cursor/arrow will randomly disappear. I have to move the cursor/arrow beyond the Safari page and click on the desktop somewhere to make it reappear. This was happening on my MBP 15" for the last few months, now it is happening on my Mac Pro. Any suggestions on how to fix this?? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Jany --
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to come across that way.
I was just trying to suggest turning them ALL off to see if that helped.
If things were way better, the user could put one back at a time, which
    would find the culprit.
Sorry, all this Flash stuff and suspicions of evil doing somehow
    caught up with me.
ANYway, It's cool that you're making progress.
If your cursor doesn't disappear in other apps, like word processing or email,
it' probably not your mouse, either

  • Notes disappeared while using inaccessible yahoo account, recovery mission

Nearly 3 months ago now I departed for my first of-age independent overseas trip to Vietnam. Shortly before leaving home the thought of losing my iPod notes (where I keep all of my important information) during the trip comes to mind, so I scramble to see whether my iPod is backed up with itunes in the case that the iPod gets stolen or lost. I do a new backup for safety (23/11/14)
When I'm at the airport waiting I have a fiddle around with the notes settings. Virtually all of my notes are located on a yahoo 'account' within the notes. I didn't particularly want to use yahoo but I just went with it when they started saving in there automatically several years ago. The yahoo email account it is linked to is one that I hadn't been able to get into for a very long time, so when I saw in the settings that I could change the 'default account' to gmail (the email I actually use) I went for it. I go into my notes and they've all disappeared, excluding one from before the yahoo account existed, located instead on the 'on my ipod touch' account. The yahoo account has disappeared from the accounts page on the notes (http://puu.sh/g4y51/6ea6558e4b.jpg). I try switching the default back to yahoo but my notes don't come back.
Since I was leaving for overseas and couldn't check my computer for the backup I did, I opted to try and recover my yahoo email acccount to see if my notes had saved there. I manage to get in and when I do, the notes section has only 4 notes from years ago, including that one note from the 'on my ipod touch' account (the other three I believe were deleted notes from the same time period). I more or less give up in the hopes that when I get back home all of my notes will be saved onto iTunes. When I get back I download the iphonebackupextractor program and check the backup from the day I left (23/11/14) and in the notes section there is one note only. It's that same note that was not wiped from the ipod and was in the notes section of my yahoo email account. iCloud did not have any notes saved. I've added the yahoo account back in Settings>Mail, Contacts & Calendars>Accounts but the only notes in the account are the 4 that synced to the email. I imagine that the hundreds of others didn't sync because I hadn't inputted the password for such a long time (there was nothing in the password section in >Accounts), that being because I didn't know the password.
Have these notes simply vanished? Has anyone encountered something like this before? I would really love to have these notes back as it is the product of my thoughts during the coming-of-age section of my life (17-18 especially). I am now very skeptical about the stock notes app's reliability and am interested in any good alternatives anyone might know about where I can backup to email accounts and my computer with ease, separate notes into folders, and whatever other good features you think I could find handy.

Oops! Here's the question that belongs to the information above:
Yesterday, one of my Notes disappeared while I was editing it. What happened?

  • Disapearing Hardrive While Using FCP

This is the 3rd computer that this has happened to me on, so I know its not the machine. When I use Final Cut Pro in any way, sometimes just to adjust something only slightly, GIGS of hardrive space come up missing. I working on a 6 minute piece right now and already 20 GIGS are missing!!!!
Theres gotta be somekinda setting somewhere that Im not aware of to control this.
Help! I only 25 GIGS left. Another 5 minute short will wipe me out!!
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 gigs ram

The 'missing gigs' are probably render files.
If you plan on doing more than rip off DVDs, you may want to get an external firewire or e-sata drive.
While you are out shopping for the drive, pick up the appropriate Expresscard 34 card to work with the format.
    cheers,

  • Internal RAID Drives Disappeared from Desktop & Finder

A few days ago, one of my two internal mirrored RAID sets no longer showed on the desktop or in the Finder Sidebar. A day later, the other internal RAID set disappeared from desktop and sidebar. The two remaining internal non-RAID drives show up as do two external drives. All internal and external hard drives still show under Disk Utility and Photoshop Bridge CS3.
I checked Finder Preferences and boxes are checked to show internal and external drives on the desktop and sidebar. I looked at the drive detail under Disk Utility and nothing looks wrong with the two RAID sets ON-LINE. I unmounted one RAID set and re-mounted without any change. I tried unchecking the two preference boxes to not show the drives and rebooted, rechecking the boxes and rebooting and nothing changed on the desktop or sidebar.
Does anyone have any suggestions to resolve this?

Well our invisible drives problem is resolved but it's not the solution that I'd hoped for.
We visited the Genius Bar at a local Apple store and they denied any knowledge of problems with invisible drives in Macs and discounted my reports from Mac forums.
I went home and ordered a new 1tb Seagate drive. When it arrived, I installed it in bay 2, copied each invisible drive to the new drive one-at-a-time, broke my two sets of internal mirrored drives, erased all the affected drives and reloaded them. Now all drives are visible on the Desktop and Finder again.
I'm hoping that the disappearing drive problem doesn't surface again but view this as an unresolved Apple issue. Now I can look at other mass storage options for future growth.

  • My daughter's ipod touch got hot while charging and will no longer turn on.

My daugther's ipod touch got hot and will no longer turn on.  Is there a solution to this problem or is the ipod fried?

I'm not sure if it's fried or not, but try rebooting the device by pressing and holding the on/off and home buttons simultaneously for about 15 seconds or so. Hopefully you will see the Apple logo.

  • How many RAID drives can one use in a MAC Pro?

I know the question sounds simple. I have a Mac Pro with four matched drives (purchased specifically to do RAID). I want speed over everything else with these drives, and use a automated backup every night to create an external bootable backup, and once a week to do another, so I am comfortable with using all four internals for RAID. Also I have had my Mac for several months and have tried several configurations. I also used software raid in my old windows workstation (2 drives), Here is the reason for my question. In the Mac, as I have gone beyond 2 drives, I have noticed lots of speed, but issues with slowdowns when dealing with drives out of the raid set, 2 drives is fast and very stable, and "normal". 3 drives is noticably faster but has problems communicating with the single, fourth drive and external drives. 4 drives were tried early on and had problems, but that was long enough ago that I am not sure what was going on. My question: I assume that the four drives in the Mac operate on two SATA busses. Is there any reason, other than perhaps a my own hardware or install problem (ie, not a Mac limitation), that should prevent me from using all 4 drives in a single Mac disk utility software raid? has anyone done this? I want to consider this one more time before i consider the machine to be in its "final setup". Side point: Doing all the installs I have done to experiment with these questions has made me very comfortable with the Mac, and I am probably much further along in my "PC to Mac" transition that I ever would have been otherwise. Oh, on that line, BOOT CAMP is not being used, so that does not factor into the question. I certainly appreciate the consideration anyone would give to this post.
    Regards, Arthur in Baton Rouge

Thank you, in fact I am using Seagates, but they are 320GB, and were specifically the "NS" series that are designated bt Seagate as being for this kind of work, and 24-7 use. Then I found out how great the Mac sleep works, and my drives get less spin time than my PC drives did! But it had occurred to me that it was perhaps a drive issue. I will go to Seagates Support, and in the meantime, leave this topic open in case anyone else has similar thoughts.
    Thanks for the response!

  • Brand new iMac i7 restarts for no reason while using FCP

I have had my iMac i7 for less than a month. I am having the same issue... The computer blanks and restarts with no warning whatsoever.
This is happening while editing/playing back video in Final Cut Pro 6.0.6. It is a multicam edit – 5 streams of 1280x1080 HD footage. I know this is very taxing on the machine, however, I am monitoring the system stats and it doesn't appear to be redlining.
Regardless... If it were too taxing on the machine, I could see FCP crashing, but the restart thing is weird. I'm ready to send this thing back to Apple.
All RAM is factory-installed Apple RAM. No modification have been made. All system and app updates are current.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!!
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi maooley
Reset the SMC (System Management Controller) > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    +1. Shut down the computer.+
    +2. Unplug the computer's power cord.+
+3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.+
    +4. Release the power button.+
+5. Attach the computers power cable.+
+6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.+
Then restart resetting the PRAM > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
+Restart holding the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears and hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.+
This is also a good time to check for any loose power connections and/or replace an old surge protector.
Then if *"the computer blanks and restarts with no warning whatsoever"* it is likely a hardware problem and you will need to contact Apple Support. > http://www.apple.com/support/contact/

  • Mail2.1 disappeared while using it

My wife was working in mail, when it apparently started popping up a dialog box asking her to install it?? Not clear on details
Anyway, now now when I start mail, a dialog box asks to set up a new account. Not sure if this means I need to specify all accounts stuff over again. But big question is - will this wipe out existing emails?
Mail works fine on my login, so it is in hers that is the problem. I ran the Disk utility to repair permissions. I noticed a com.apple.mail.plist.saved file in Preferences dated the time of the crime. There is also a com.apple.mail.plist there. The account folders under Library/ Mail seem intact.
So do I need to re-enter the account info?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

What’s the capacity and space available on your startup disk? Take a look at the comments about disk space in the following article, in case they apply to you:
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space
Even if there is enough space available on the startup disk, for some reason that remains a mystery to me, Mail sometimes “thinks” it must discard the current ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file and create a new one. As a result, all your non-Mac account settings (but not the messages themselves), which are stored in that file, are lost.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what’s it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), quit Mail if it’s running, and make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, just in case something else goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. This is where all your mail is stored.
    You have three options now:
    (1) Restore com.apple.mail.plist from a backup if you have one. Mail shouldn’t be running while you do this.
    (2) Set up your non-Mac accounts in Mail again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done. You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    (3) Mail may have renamed the old preferences file to com.apple.mail.plist.saved. If that’s the case, you may try moving the new com.apple.mail.plist out of ~/Library/Preferences/ (e.g. to the Desktop) and rename the old com.apple.mail.plist.saved back to com.apple.mail.plist. Again, be sure Mail isn’t running while doing this. Since Mail decided to discard it, I would expect this file to be corrupt (I don’t understand why would Mail discard it and create a new one otherwise), but apparently that often is not the case and the settings can indeed be restored by just renaming the file.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Removed flash drive while ejecting and will no longer show - Help?

Not in Finder or any directory or Disk Utility or anywhere. Should be able to get at Console logs. Any chance of recovering data? This is not urgent as I should be able to source the most important files from elsewhere. It's merely a cheap little Paris St-Germain 4GB souvenier. Thanks in advance and apologies if this is in the wrong place.

Sounds like the directory got badly corrupt. That can happen any time you disconnect an external drive without ejecting it first.
Unfortunately, if it's not showing up in Disk Utility, repairing it may not be possible. You could try using DiskWarrior to repair it, or could try using something like Data Rescue to recover the data. In the latter case, you'll lose all the filenames and folder organization.

  • After the last update of logic x my record button disappeared while using M-Audio

    Hello,
I've been using Logic for ages and recorded many demo tracks with M-Audio Fast Track Pro. Recently, I updated the Logic Pro X and after that I realised that the record button in Logic Pro X disappeared even though the Fast Track Pro is plucked in in the same way as before.
I can hear the sound from the plucked mic or guitar but unable to record it.
    Thank you for any help.

    Update:
For some currently unknown reason, 10.0.5 seems to break M-Audio devices....
It may be M-Audio's fault or Logic's but at this time, it's hard to say until an explanation is forthcoming....
Please contact M-Audio and ask for their assistance....
Until a fix is available, the workaround is to roll back to 10.0.4.... assuming of course, you have backups which you should always make before upgrading/updating anything......

That's crazy. A serial number is not required.

  • External hard drive will no longer mount or be recognized by any utility FIX!!!

i have been searching al day and running endless useless terminal scripts to no avail. earlier i was in the middle of upgrading my xp bootcamp partition to sp3 and forgot i had my macally external harddrive still connected and running. i noticed that the light on it was blinking and since i was running the windows installer(and we all know anything can happen) i feared the worst and that i had chosen the wrong partition for it to install the sp3 update on. i immediately did a force power down even though it was abig no no,but i have done it in the past with this and a ton ofother external drives and even if they didnt mount at first they eventually would after running oynx, cocktail, disk utilitya and restarting. i finally gave up and had just placed an offer for the exact same drive to be shipped asap since i currently had no time machine or bootcamp backups as well as other important data. i decided to unscrew the 2 screws in the back to free the drive from the enclosure just to see if there was an obvious thing wrong that could be messed with or fixed to make it mount again, even to just have the ability to reformat it again, since that's not possible with ANY of the major utilites out there UNLESS it can be mounted or at least visible to them. NOTE: Do NOT BUY ANY of those expensive utilities,i have them all and they don't do ****! so anyway i looked at the drive didnt see anything and decided to try and boot it while exposed and out of the enclosure. I plugged it in, and BOOM it worked! PERFECTLY. Rasn checks in all utilities including disk warrior and disk utility and all tests passed as normal. SO for anyone having this nightmare problem i had ALL DAY LONG,do exactly what i did. open it up,remove it if possible, plug it in and see if it mounts. i will put it back together when i get a chance. GOOD LUCK!!!

Nevermind, I updated the system and works like a charm, so weird.
