G-Raid or G-Sata for Uncompressed 8 bit ??

I'm looking to buy some reliable storage to do 2 streams of uncompressed 8 bit with my MBP 2.16 Ghz c2d. I'm not sure wether i should go with G-Raid 500 or G-Sata 500 and the Sonnet Express/34 combo ???
I've tested using my Lacie drive with FW800 into the macbook pro playing back 1-2 stream of uncompressed 8 bit video and the result was not bad but not 100 % reliable ( keep getting the drop frame window once in a while ). So at this point i was hoping the Sata route will be safer....any suggestions ??? Thanks.

Both work. The G-Raid can get up to 3 streams of uncompressed 8-bit, and I think the G-SATA can to, if not one more stream for four.

  • G-RAID or G-SATA for PB?

It’s time to buy an external HD to store and access my video projects and pictures.
    I am 90% stacked with G-Tech
My question is: what exactly are the differences between G-Raid and G-SATA. Which one is better for video editing and for my PB G4 1.67?
I also want to know if there is another way to connect to PB; faster and better than fireware.
    Your help is really appreciated.
    Thank you!

There's a plus in the fact that you don't use up the Mac's FW bus with this SATA connection. But ya have that card involved. fast is better if it's reliable.
There a negative though in that you can't a SATA array to just any old mac lyin' around. You could with the FW setup. SATA cards are cheap if you have the slots for 'em. I don't. I have SCSI still...
I gotta say, the G-Tech folk are fixing any arrays that don't work right. They have their own public forum at the COW and the president of the company is one of the leaders. Their woes are public, but their standup guys IMHO.

  • Best workflow for Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2?

I need to submit Uncompressed 10-bit or 8-bit video to a stock agency. I shoot HDV 1080i.
    *Current workflow:*
When I import my clips, I use the HDV Apple intermediate codec 1080i50, as it is the only HDV codec that I see in te list of "easy setup" that suits my camera. But I can see that it produces a framesize of 1440 x 1080. Afterwards I export to quicktime, using the Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 setting in Quicktime, sizing my video to 1920 x 1080 as requested by the stock agency.
Is this the correct workflow? I feel as if I'm blowing up/interpolating my original material which can not result in the optimum quality... Or am I wrong about this? Your tips on the right importing settings or workflow are highly appreciated!
+(I posted in the Quicktime forum that I can't export to Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 without FCE crashing - but this is a different issue.)+

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Sony FX1000 shoot in HDV and miniDV. You already know that HDV is a compressed format.
3CMOS and a quality lens will make a huge difference in term of quality but, the material will be compressed to HDV. May be you can think about renting a professionnal model. As Tom said, FCP is the way to go if you want better control over the compression shem and worklow toward professionnal output.
If you think about any color correction, HDV is not a good choice. FCP allows to capture and edit in ProRes422, thus the color corection and compisiting give better results. ProRes is only available with Final Cut Studio 2 package.
Think to upgrade your RAM, and buy an dedicated hard drive for video storage if you go this way. You did mention how you will distribute the material to tha agence, but uncompressed material can represent an issue on DVD data storage.

  • Recommend a capture card for uncompressed 8-bit over SDI?

I've got a number of digibeta tapes that need to end up as 720x486 Apple 8-bit 4:2:2 uncompressed quicktimes. Is it possible to find a card that can capture natively to this format? It seems like the blackmagic and Aja cards use their own flavor of 8-bit uncompressed. I want to be able to use/view these files on any system that has quicktime, without having to install any additional codecs. Am I right in thinking that Apple's own version of 8-bit uncompressed is included with any quicktime install? Any way to capture right to this format, rather than capture to another uncompressed flavor and export?
    -f

Sure, there's several in fact. AJA, and Decklink make the units you need. My favorite would be the AJA LHi card if you have no need for 2k conversions.

  • Uncompressed 8-bit Preset problems

    Hi,
I'm trying to solve a jaggy text problem by creating a new uncompressed 8-bit sequence (which I've never used before).
I try using the preset for Uncompressed 8-bit and click OK... but then I get the following message:
"Video Compressor Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 was not found. Please check that the hardware is present and enabled for this compressor. Setting the video to Animation."
I'm not sure what this means. Do I need a better Video Card? (My friend has FCP 5 on his old 867MHz Powerbook and it works fine on that... so I can't see how my dual 1 GHz doesn't have the right hardware...).
Please advise if you have encountered this error...
    Thanks.
    G

The file... it's not a file but an edited sequence... I "captured" it using firewire DV preset... miniDV consumer camera.
Edited the whole show into a 30 second sequence.
Was trying to put superimposed title graphics which were "jaggy"
Someone suggested creating an uncompressed sequence and then cutting in the DV sequence and graphics into it...
But I couldn't create the uncompressed sequence.
I tried creating a brand new project using the uncompressed preset... and got the same error message.

  • G-raid or g-sata?

i've been reading all the horror stories with lacie drives. i have a 500gb and it has been working fine for months. however, one of ours at work has crashed and one of the disks is non-recoverable.
if i am to go with something else, i am assuming that since firewire capture and playback -- deck and storage being connected to the same firewire bus, and the fact that apple doesn't support firewire capture in FCP, wouldn't the g-sata be a better way to go than the g-raid? a bit more expensive maybe, and i need to get a pci-x card, but more stable and faster?
please give pros and cons of g-raid vs g-sata.
    thanks
    carl

please give pros and cons of g-raid vs g-sata.
    pro's
G-RAID ... very portable, uses common FW400, and FW800 protocols
supports multiple stream DV25, DV50 video playback
G-SATA ... blazingly fast transfer speeds up to 135 MB/s
supports multiple stream uncompressed video playback
    con's
    G-RAID ... not as fast as G-SATA
needs FW800 host bus adapter or cardbus adapter if capturing on built-in FW bus
G-SATA ... needs SATA host bus adapter or cardbus adapter
    more expensive

  • P55-GD65 (Bios 1.6) Need help with RAID-1 and SATA DVD-RW

Sorry if this has been already asked; did a search.
    Trying to configure 2-Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 750 GB drives in a RAID-1.
I also have a SATA DVD-RW plugged in as well.
I enabled RAID mode = RAID in BIOS, pressed CTRL-I when booting to enter Intel's RAID configure screen, when there set the RAID 1 volume, exited.
Booted into Windows XP, went to load the RAID driver and..... no DVD-RW to read the disk. ?
Back in the BIOS, sure enough, all the SATA devices had disappeared except for SATA 7.
Is this a restriction of Intel RAID - that you have any RAID, all the SATA ports are RAID only?
I couldn't find any settings to choose which SATA ports are RAID and which are not.
    Thanks,

Try to move your DVD drive to another SATA port.
I did end up moving the DVD-RW to SATA7 and yes it shows up always.
But that is a disappointment. Apparently, with these Intel SATA controllers, RAID is an all or nothing proposition - turn on RAID and that will be the only use for SATA1-SATA6. At least that's my theory; Intel doesn't spell this out. This is a bummer for me, as I had hoped to use SATA1 and SATA2 for a RAID-1 and hang other devices off SATA3-7.
I could use the Jmicron RAID, as that uses just two ports, but that occupies SATA7 and SATA8, and (apparently) SATA8 is the eSATA connector on the rear panel - not very useful for a RAID.

  • Neer WXP RAID and SSCI driver for my Satellite C650-10K

Does anybody know where I can find the Raid and SSCI driver for my Satellite C650-10K?

    Hi buddy,
Are you sure that you need RAID or SCSI (not SSCI) driver for Satellite C650?
As far as I know this model doesnt support such hardware
I think you need drivers for SATA controller. This package is called Intel Storage Manager and can be downloaded on official Toshiba website.
Here is an interesting article about XP installation with SATA drivers:

  • RAID 1 with SATA on Linux

    Hello!
I have a new system with the next configuration : mainboard - MSI 865PE Neo2 FIS2R; Intel P4 2,8 Ghz HT; 1 GB RAM dual chanel, 2 x SATA HDD (120 GB each).
My main problem is that I try to install Suse 9.1 Professional on this system. I can't make the linux see the disks like they are in a RAID 1 array. I set them to RAID 1 form the mainboard BIOS uility (press Ctrl-I after BIOS loads). There doesn's seem to be any linux driver on CD or floppy disk.
Has anyone encounter this problem? Do I need some linux drivers for this to be
    acompilshed?
    Thanks.

You aren't going to find any Linux drivers from MSI. The ICH5R chipset is Intel, and I have read somewhere that it is possible to configure for raid. The SATA drives show up differently depending on whether you use kernel 2.4 or 2.6. Try Google.

  • Capture preset for uncompressed HD Varicam

I'm using the Panasonic DVC PRO HD 1200A deck for capturing the footage through SDI in FCP.
When capturing HD footage at 720p 25fps i get uncompressed 1280x720 files, but when capturing at 720p 60 fps the only way to get variable frame rates is changing the compression to DVC PRO HD 720p60 which is a compressed format at a 960x720 frame size. This way i have to resize(stretch) the final footage for the final output which softens the image a bit.
My question is, is there a way to capture variable frame rates in uncompressed 1270x720 frame size?
    Emilios

The Varicam shoots in the DVCPRO HD format, 960x720 (anamorphic)...so capturing as DVCPRO HD means that you are capturing in the native codec. If you captured via firewire using the DVCPRO HD 720p60 codec, that would be a direct file transfer...zero quality loss. If you capture it via HD SDI as DVCPRO HD it is pretty much the same thing.
If you capture as uncompressed 8-bit 1280x720...then you are recompressing the footage.

  • Mirrored RAID taking too long for Data Rebuild

I have created a RAID 1 (Mirrored RAID) using Disk Utility in my Mac Pro. I have used 2 x 4TB WD Enterprise Grade HDDs. I copied 10 gb data on to this 4 TB RAID volume. Then removed one of the HDDs & installed in my other Mac Pro. It mounted as normal HDD & showed all the data that I had copied. To check if Disk Utility will rebuild the data, I deleted some part of this data (2 GBs out of 10 GBs) & installed this drive back in the system on which I had Created this RAID volume.
Initially I was surprised to find that Deleted data is now absent on this RAID volume. But on Launching Disk Utility it started rebuilding data on RAID volume.
BUT for Rebuilding 2 GB data estimated time shown by system was 9 hrs.
    Is this NORMAL?
I intend to fill this 4 TB RAID volume with approximately 3.5 TB Data. In case one of the drive fails, how long should it take for Disk Utility to rebuild this amount of Data?
Is there any alternative way of speeding up this process?
    Will Apple's RAID card help?
All your suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks

I know this is an old thread but I'd be interested in what you came up with for a solution.

  • Is uncompressed 8-bit PAL 48 KHz the most compatible format for a HDV dvd

I have shot a project in HDV, edited in HDV sequence. I now want to produce a dvd, that is compatible on both widescreen and 4:3 tv's.
A friend suggested exporting a quicktime movie in uncompressed 8-bit PAL 48 KHz to ensure maximum compatibility.
Would people agree with using this setting?
