G-raid spindown fix?

does it exist?

Real elitists use Terminal.
To force your drives to never sleep:
- Launch the Terminal application (Applications>Utilities>Terminal) and type:
sudo pmset spindown X (X=the number of minutes that you want till your drive spins down. 0 (zero) is never/
- type your password when it asks for it.

  • Does RAID Rebuild Fix Bad Blocks on RAID Slice?

I have RAID 1 enabled (the mirroring option) between two drives on my XServe G4. Yesterday, Server Monitor reported that the RAID was degraded. I booted off the install CD. I launched Disk Utility. Disk Utility immediately rebuilt the RAID. By immediately I mean that it didn't ask if I wanted to, but it took over two hours.
Today, I ran TechTool Pro. It says that one of the disks in the RAID has 3 bad blocks. It says that the only way to fix that is to erase the disk and zero all data.
When TechTool scanned the RAID itself as a disk, however, it did not report any bad blocks. This makes me wonder if rebuilding the RAID somehow took care of the bad blocks already.
Please let me know if my theory is correct!

Oh...if you have data you are trying to save then its best to try cloning the drive to another one, which should save its data as-is to another drive. Hopefully you can do so without there being hangups around the bad blocks and keep at least most of your data intact. I'd recommend you try using Carbon Copy Cloner to do this, but you will need a secondary drive that is at least the size of the data on the problematic drive.

  • Mirroring Concatenated Drives in Nested RAID

    Hi
Is it possible to RAID mirror a concatenated set of drives? The goal is to have expandable, redundant storage. One side of the mirrored RAID would be 1 TB + 3 TB drives and the other side would be a single 4 TB drive. As I add to the concatenated drive RAID, I would add the same amount of storage to the other side in the mirrored RAID.
Does this work or is a mirrored RAID a fixed size that can never be expanded once it's created?
    Thanks! - Cliff

As "greyday records" says, a concatenated set of disks can be a collection of any sized disks and you get to use all the space.  In days of old, this was useful if you had files larger than the size of a single disk.  These days, you can get disks that are generally speaking much larger any file you might want to store.  If you wanted to have a large number of files all on the same file system then concatenated might be useful.
A RAID0 requires equal sized disks, or as "greyday records"s says, the smallest disk in the set is the controlling factor for how much space is used on any of the other disks in the set.  Any disk in the set larger than the smallest disk will have unused space.
A concatenated set of disks is as fast as the disk the data is being written to.  A RAID0 disk set can be much faster as the data can be written in parallel to each stripe in the set.  High Performance computing has been using striped (RAID0) sets for years to get data into and out of the CPU as fast as possible.  RAID0 still has more practical uses.

  • Raid 5+0 won't mount

    Hi guys,
Please help me retrieve my files or rebuild my crashed directory. I really need your opinion here as I am running out of ideas.
Here is the story: I have 2 Xserve RAID with 10.5TB each. I use it as a storage file. Now I configured it to the Raid Admin to Raid 5. Then I connected it to a host computer and configured it to a software Raid 0.
Now here is the problem, the host computer crashed. When I rebooted it, my raid wont mount. When I repair it in disk utility, here's the output:
Verify and Repair disk "RAID NAME"
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
Catalog file entry not found for extent
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error.
I am confused because when I check it the disk utility under the RAID tab, my whole drive is "ONLINE" but its partition or Raid Slices are "OFFLINE". I have tried installing new host computers with fresh installs, it still doesn't mount. I have unplugged power supply, fibre interface cards, batteries, basically everything but the physical drives. Still no luck.
This is not an XSAN, just Xserve, but we do have XSAN Admin Utility and a seperate XSAN. Both are being managed via XSAN Admin Utility.
    Any thoughts?

My Raid is fixed and have all my data! Come to find out there was partition map damage. From what I understand this seems more likely to happen in an raid 50 configured with apple disk utility. I emailed the guys at Softraid.com and they were able to repair the damaged partition map. Now I have my raids configured using the softraid software. Softraid's software will convert the apple raid to their raid configuration. This was not the fix in my case. The guys at softraid were very knowledgeable and were able to solve the problem by sending precise instructions and files back and forth over email.
    My Symptoms were:
The ADU said the raid was online, but the slices were not, also the volume had be renamed to "Video Content", which I never named the volume that. Raid utility showed everything working properly. I hope this helps those in trouble, feel free to email me at afour_astro at yahoo if you have anyquestions, or just email the guys at softraid.

  • Hard Drive Sleep Issue

I´ve got one problem with my Mac Pro running a fresh tiger installation. My internal hard drives go to sleep although i´ve unchecked the "enable hard drive sleep" checkbox in the energysaver prefpane. i am using 4 internal hds and after a while of one or more being inactive i can hear them spinnig up upon reactivation (doubleclick) and there is a certain delay in responsiveness (e.g. windows opening up...). Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

There is a utility named "spindown fix" that can resolve the issue of HD's not staying up even after you've unchecked "put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible." Apparently that doesn't actually do anything
Normally, I let my drives spin down to conserver energy and keep everything cooler, including external FW drives. But sometimes when I'm using Final Cut Pro, I don't want the delay while I await a spin up. So I uncheck "HD sleep" in energy saver and then run Spindown Fix. It seems to work.
Search the web for "spindown fix."
(edit): I did some more research, and at least in 10.4.11, if you have the system sleep other than "never" and don't check the HD sleep option in energy saver, the HD sleep doesn't becomre "never" but rather 180 minutes. You can verify this for your system by using the plist editor (part of development tools package delivered with 10.4) and examining libarary/preferences/systemconfiguration/com.apple.powermangement/plist
In the AC power custom profile, you'll find the parameter Disk Sleep Time; you can examine how it varies based on your energy saver settings. Some say to set it to zero to prevent spin down form occurring every; I would not necessarily recommend that if 180 minutes is long enough for your.

  • FASTER RESPONSE FROM keyboard/mouse actions?

1.42 GHz PPC G4, 1GB DDR SD Ram (4200 rph HD)
How can I DECREASE computer RESPONSE action/time to day to day activities?
It is not clear what 'slows down' software/computer responses and causes the spinning balls in relatively simple actions.
My usage is not 'heavy' nor 'complex'; Typically Mail, Safari, FoxFire, Word 2007, TextEditPlus,
QuickTime (music on occasion). Occasionally Adobe Reader and Photoshop Elements. Safari often more spinning balls than others.
By turning OFF USB an external HD with switching Power Supply that helps avoid delays. But what
    else can be done?
I choose to stay with Tiger 10.4.11 - and do NOT chose to go to a later version of the OS.
Is there a "faster response" time for later versions of the Mini?
Given that my first Mac was a 400k floppy machine with MacWrite and MacDraw - in relative terms we I do now is like a supersonic jet... but mine needs a booster -
    ideas??

Your computer's list of items in-use, per Activity Monitor, tell you
what is running and while these are Active, give an idea of how
much of the computer's configuration (hard/soft-ware) resources
are being used. Also, the Activity Monitor can tell you the load
of Virtual Memory and actual Chip RAM demands of Apps.
The interface of USB mouse and keyboard can act slowed-down
when the computer resources are running loaded. Even with up
to 75% hard disk drive free-space (unused, except for system
use as Virtual Memory and application temp or swap space) my
computer with an 8GB HDD can also, at times, have a slow key-
    board and mouse.
If you have more than one browser window open, or run Office
and some other apps at the same time, the overall load on the
Mini G4 (with the 1024MB max RAM installed) can be critical.
The virtual memory write/read cycles to the hard disk drive
increase, and this will also add to a lag when there is a rush
of demand on diminishing resources; plus, a tired old HDD.
Do you occasionally log-out of the main user account and log
back in? This can sometimes help free-up RAM and other use
of system resources, without having to restart the Mac.
How often do you restart the computer, & do you leave it to sleep
when not in use, or do you power it off? Just curious.
As the computer gets older and the hard disk drive more worn,
it may be running warmer and slower; less efficiently and tired,
this lag may be more apparent and point to a need to replace
the internal hard disk drive with a new, larger & better spec unit.
In some instances, there had been a controversy over which was
faster to the computer's processor and RAM (system bus) - be it
a 400 Mbit FW400 external hard disk drive, or a hard disk drive
on the computer's own bus. Some tests, machine series dependant,
showed a variable; with some FW400 enclosures running slower
than the internal computer's hard disk drive.
I've found both slower and faster (depending on the computer)
using an external HDD in FireWire400 enclosure, vs the native
drive; with even a 7200 RPM 250GB HDD running thoroughput
slower than an internal 5400 RPM 80GB drive; but not always.
Do you use a powered USB hub with the peripheral items your
computer is attached to, when running the Mini? For mine, the
better setup was to use powered USB hubs, with the keyboard
plugged directly into the Mac (for startup keyboard combo access)
and the mouse plugged into a port on the powered USB hub.
To note, if there is an issue with this set-up, to troubleshoot the
powered USB hub and have a spare keyboard & mouse available.
Usually, an over-whelmed USB port in a computer will give you a
warning message implying an under-powered state exists, & near
the total possible output of voltage to the USB port is approached.
The USB bus can only support a limited ceiling; there also is a limit
on FW port loads, and devices exceeding that amount will affect all
items on their respective bus. (Example why self-powered is best.)
When you went to the AppleJack download page and clicked on
the link to get the download to start, does your browser show you
a Downloads list and ask you where/how you want the item saved?
    I have mine set so I can see any/all items, choose to install them;
& have the .dmg or other image file on the desktop where I can
see it. (In 10.5.8, the default is in a Dock location for Downloads.)
How the browser is set to handle downloads can affect results.
If your computer has been acting oddly, there may be some
kind of file corruption or data corruption causing issues in it.
This link, in Firefox, goes to the download item for AppleJack
directly, in my browser, the default is set and asks me what
I want to do about it. The main option is to accept it and then
it will download to the desktop (Tiger 10.4.11) as a .dmg. It
will not open, and does not display some kind of picture:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/applejack/files/AppleJack/AppleJack-1.6/AppleJac k-1.6.dmg/download
You should make a good backup, a bootable clone of your Mini's
entire hard disk drive contents, test it well, and then consider a
course of maintenance and repair of the internal hard drive; or get
a new replacement hard disk drive and upgrade the Mini with it.
Only 5 interruptions here, in the course of this reply to the question.
(Could be worse; some days they can be hours long; or weeks.
There is a story, non-computer related to the reader, going on.)
{Spindown Fix software has been tested in Mac OS X 10.2.3 only.
The older software suggested, may help if the external is going to
sleep if used as a boot startup volume; since once a external boot
    FW goes to sleep, the computer may not see it when it awakens.}
The Mini is sort of like a portable computer, in that the hard drive
gets a thorough work-out and it has limited upgrade capabilities.
So, for a hard disk drive to last 3 to 5 years, is lucky run. At least
    the unit isn't being hauled around while asleep, as a 'Book may;
and isn't as likely to be dropped from the lap while it's running...!
    +{Yes, it's a long post. Sorta like a Totem.}+
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Secure Boot State On in Error?

I am running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials as a VM on Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (server core).  In checking MSINFO32 I see "Secure Boot State" is "On" for Essentials, but given my current configuration I believe this should be "Off?"
I setup a new Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (server core) using an Areca ARC-1224-8i RAID controller.  It was unclear to me whether or not the Areca RAID controller would support UEFI or not, but since Secure Boot was desirable I decided to try a UEFI installation.
I created two volumes on the RAID controller.  C drive of 80 Gb and D drive of the remainder (about 9 Tb).  I checked the file C:\Windows\Panther\setupact.log and saw the message which told me this was an EFI installation/boot.
After Hyper-V was installed I then setup Essentials as a VM on the D drive.
When I ran MSINFO32 in both Hyper-V and Essentials and I saw the Secure Boot State was On which was expected (and desired) for both OS levels.
Several days later I started having problems.  The system seemed to have crashed and during multiple attempts to reboot the Hyper-V server couldn't seem to detect the RAID controller.  If I tried a new Hyper-V installation and loaded the RAID driver
the RAID controller was seen, but when Hyper-V itself tried to boot it seemed as though the RAID driver was not being loaded and thus the RAID controller could not be found (and along with it my C boot drive was missing)?
Since I had some suspicion that the RAID controller might not support UEFI I decided to re-install Hyper-V, but this time using the Legacy BIOS.  After the installation was completed I again verified the setupact.log and saw BIOS rather than EFI (as
    expected).
I then re-attached my Essentials VM (which was left untouched on the D drive) and got everything running again.
But now when I check MSINFO32 within Hyper-V it showed Secure Boot State Off (expected given that UEFI was not used).  But when checking MSINFO32 within Essentials it showed Secure Boot State On.
I thought one purpose of Secure Boot was to create a chain of trust.  Given that Hyper-V can no longer verify this chain (since UEFI is not used) I would have expected any VM running above Hyper-V to be in the same state, i.e., Secure Boot State Off?
When the underlying Hyper-V layer changed I would have expected that to change Essentials view of the world?  So it looks to me as though this is not being handled correctly?
Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
P.S.  In case this makes any difference I am using a motherboard with a TPM and both the C and D drives were encrypted with BitLocker.  The C drive used a TPM key and the D drive had a password and was setup to autounlock.
After I re-installed Hyper-V on the C drive I then manually entered the BitLocker password in order to access the Essentials VM on the D drive.

    Sophia,
Sorry for the delay.  Since I'm working other problems with this server it took a while before I could double check the configuration.
In case it matters on this server I'm using an Asus Z87-WS motherboard.
I'm setup for BIOS rather than UEFI boot.  There is a "Secure Boot" menu.
    Secure Boot State - Disabled
Platform Key (PK) state - Unloaded
OS Type - Windows UEFI Mode
Then on the "Advanced Trusted Computing" menu I have -
    Security Device Support - Enabled
    TPM State - Enabled
    Pending Operation - None
    Current Status Information - Enabled
    TPM Enabled Status - Activated
    TPM Owner Status - Unowned
When I initially installed the software (on my new RAID6 controller) I was in the process of enabling BitLocker when I ran into problems with the RAID6 controller.  I don't believe the state of the TPM should have any influence on the Secure Boot state
    anomaly I'm asking about?
When I checked C:\Windows\Panther\Setupact.log there is a line in that file that confirms a BIOS boot.  When I logged onto Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 and ran MSINFO32 (as noted above) there is a line that also shows BIOS and Secure Boot state as Off (which
is expected).  But within the VM running Essentials 2012 R2 when I run MSINFO32 I see a Secure Boot state of On (which is unexpected).  I don't recall off hand if MSINFO32 within Essentials showed BIOS or UEFI for the boot?  I think it was BIOS,
but would have to double check.  (I won't be able to do that until I get issues with my RAID controller fixed.  Or until I give up and try some other method to setup the hard drives and re-install Essentials.)
    Thanks for your help.

  • Rinsed my permissions...

    OK, here's the gig,
I've done a stupid mistake while hungover. I was trying to share my hard drive over VNC so I could get some files without having to get off the sofa and go in to the other room.
So I shared my boot drive, (It was only going to be temp) and then for some REASON, a reason I know not of, I set permissions on the drive to Everybody - No Access and applied it to all sub folders and files on the boot drive.
So, it stopped working almost instantly.
    Won't boot.
It's a SSD RAID so fixing permissions is a tricky thing. Tried fixing permissions via my laptop. Still won't boot.
Tried installing a new Lion install over the top, that won't work.
Do I need to wipe & reinstall or is there a way I'm not thinking of to save this baby? I've got it set up just the way I like it.
But if it needs to be wiped, so be it...
Thanks, and please feel free to send all the abuse you can, I deserve it all.

  • Boot up Delay with KT3 Ultra2

    My configuration:
    Windows XP
MSI KT3 Ultra2 (Non Raid) MB
    AMD XP 2100+
    256meg PC2600 Ram
    Advansys ABP940UW Ultrawide SCSI card
    Intel 10/100 Network card
    Using Onboard sound
Matrox Millinium PCI Graphics card (Temporary)
3x Ultra wide scsi Hard drives
    Plextor Ultraplex40 Wide cdrom
    Panasonic 7502B CDR
During bootup the machine goes thropugh the post screen 100% after which the scsi bios screen appears as usual. After this I hear another beep followed by 30sec to 1 minute of black screen after which the PC boots normally. I am thinking it may be some incompatability with the scsi card but can't be sure. The 4 green indicator lights are glowing indicating a good startup but why the pause??? Windows then boots and runs normally.

I'm assuming this is a raid board right? the raid bios initialization is REALLY slow, so that's my best guess, or possibly a driver causing it, I loaded the via raid patch fix and it slowed down my boot process but not by 5-10 seconds.

  • Preventing external HDs from spinning down

Anyone know of a better way of preventing my OWC external FireWire HardDrive from spinning down (and hence slowing some/most? Finder operations down) than 'Spindown fix 1.1' (http://www.index-site.com/software.html)?
    TIA!

    Mark,
I don't think this works on external drives, but you may want to check to see if your Mac's Disk Sleep Timer setting may have been changed. Disk Sleep Timer is one of your Mac's Power Management settings and can be found under the Power item in System Profiler. The default setting for Leopard is 180 minutes, but for Tiger it was only 10 minutes, which was quite annoying.
You can change this setting by typing the following command in Terminal:
    sudo pmset disksleep ?
Replace the ? with the number of minutes you want to set and press <Return>, then when prompted, type in your password. If you use a setting of 0 (zero), the hard disks will never sleep, unless you checked "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in the Energy Saver Control Pane.
Again, I don't know if this works with external drives, but it's worth a shot.

  • Insomniac Harddrive?

I'm usually pretty good at troubleshooting but this one has me stumped. First off, let me say that this issue hasn't seemed to have affected the machine's performance, it's just disconcerting (and a little annoying).
It may just be a coincidence but, ever since I attached a USB drive for use as a backup, my wife's iMac's internal drive constantly spins up, then a few minutes later, spins down. About every 3 to 5 minutes. It doesn't happen while in use and I've set all the Energy Saver and Screen Saver preferences to 1 hour.
I've gone through all the usual maintanence tips (repair permissions, PRAM, etc.) and it remains the same. I should also add that I tried ejecting and powering down the external drive and the problem remained.

Assuming putting the hard drive to sleep when possible is not checked off in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver, you may have encountered a bug that I don't hear about that often, but I have a free software which solves that bug. See my Spindown Fix*:

  • Bootup fails - Dmraid - probably new klibc

    Hi ,
    i need your help!
My x86_64 machine does not reach any runlevel since yesterday.(upgraded on 7.8.2008)
There appears a strange error message when running this with "quiet" i cut some unnessary out....

Here is my menu.lst mtab and the fstab: http://rafb.net/p/DEwGYu81.html
    Perhaps this is important:
I also installed all the packages in the [testing] to get the newest klibc udev hal and dmraid.
After updating these, the identification of the devices changed from
    nvidia_badbdbca*
    to
    nvidia_badbdbcap*
I changed this in the fstab mtab and in the menu.lst via the archlive rescue disk.
I also made a mkinitcpio - no effect on the booting process.
This has probably something to do with the initscripts, but i have no idea how to check that.
I hope somebody is into that...
    thanks

I figured out a way to get it to work again without downgrading any packages (at least on my 64 bit machine, where I have enabled the testing repo).
0.) You'll need a Linux boot CD with dmraid (Otherwise you obviously wont be able to access your soft-RAID and fix up the whole mess. An Archlinux setup CD is fine, if your's is too old and doesn't contain yet dmraid, you can boot from it, set up your internet connection with dhcpcd eth0, and then install it with pacman -Sy dmraid.)
1.) Create the /dev/mapper/ devices of your RAID with dmraid -ay and mount your Arch installation with mount -t ext3 /dev/mapper/XXXpN /mnt, where XXX stands for the name of the soft-RAID mapper device and N stands for the number of the partition. If you are not using ext3 but a different file system, you have of course to specify this filesystem instead of ext3.
2.) The whole problem actually comes from the fact that dmraid gives slightly different names to the mapper devices it creates for the partitions on your soft-RAID. For example, if you had /dev/mapper/nvidia_cfefjbch1 before your upgrade to kernel 2.6.27, you have now  /dev/mapper/nvidia_cfefjbchp1. It seems added letter seems to be always a p (I guess this stands for "partition"), affects only the mapper devices of the partitions, but not the mapper device of the complete soft-RAID. Also, this seems to occur only if kernel 2.6.27 is used.
Now, to actually fix the mess, do the following:
a.) In your /boot/grub/menu.lst, you have to adapt all entries where the root parameter is specified in the kernel line.
    For example,
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/mapper/nvidia_cfefjbch1 ro
    has to be changed into
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/mapper/nvidia_cfefjbchp1 ro
b.) You have to adapt the entries your /etc/fstab. For example,
    /dev/mapper/nvidia_cfefjbch1 / ext3            defaults            0   1
    has to be changed into
    /dev/mapper/nvidia_cfefjbchp1 / ext3            defaults            0   1
    3.) Reboot.

  • Poor MySQL Performance after updating Hyper-V Host to 2012R2

    Hi
I recently updated one of our 2008R2 Hyper-V Hosts (Standalone) to 2012 R2. (64GB Memory, SSD Raid1 at LSI Controller + SAS RAID1 for Host OS)
Now one of the VMs (2008R2, Generation 1, fixed .vhdx on SSD RAID, 20GB fixed RAM, 4 Cores) performes really bad.
This VM is running a MySQL Database. The performance is VERY poor over a network as well as on the local system (Same task in our Application takes more than double the time as before).
The VM itself wasn't changed in any kind.
While file copy and overall performance of the VM seem to be OK, SQL queries are extremely slow.
CPU Usage of VM stays nearly idle, it only uses 2GB RAM, but the virtual Disk I/O only reaches about 8 KByte/s!!! (File Copy between 200 and 400 MB/s)
Checked same VM again on different Hardware -> same result...
Really have no ideas any more.

    Hi LiwoCN,
aha "my Application (Sage New Classic)".
Da kann ich bestimmt in deutsch helfen (otherwise I can translate it to english).
    innodb_data_file_path           = ibdata1:10M:autoextend
    innodb_buffer_pool_size         = 10G
    innodb_log_file_size            = 2G
    innodb_log_buffer_size          = 8M
    innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit  = 2
    innodb_lock_wait_timeout        = 50
    innodb_log_files_in_group       = 4
    innodb_support_xa               = 0
    innodb_thread_concurrency       = 0
    myisam_max_sort_file_size       = 4M
Daher hier evtl. selbst
    ein Optimum ermitteln.
    Ich hoffe das hilft weiter...
Danke und liebe Grüße Oliver Richter

  • Computer still sleeps with Energy Saver off

So in energy saver both of the scrollers are on Never and my computer still sleeps...please help

It sounds to me some sort of corruption is happening to your Energy Saver preferences. As a temporary fix you may want to try my Spindown Fix program which forces the Unix settings for Energy Saver to no longer go off. It does though have to be run at every Login (startup) to be effective:

Looks like the Silicon Image drivers were moved to the incompatible software folder during install/upgrade.
Downloaded latest drivers, errored out of install claiming that the drivers were from an unknown author!!!
