G-tech drive problems not mounting etc.

G-tech Graid external drives not mounting or unmounting giving idiot notice, firewire 800 diasy chained to imac 3.1 i5, cannot depend upon for automatic backup.
Started now and then with snow leoapard, has now got worse with ML and new Imac, and new 4TB Graid drive. Seems alot of people are having this problem but the suppliers, recommenders, and manufacturers are only intrested in receiving the monetaty notes and not answering to the users notes.
Has anyone actualy had a productive answer, or can anyone come up with an answer?

Appears you're not alone...

I suspect in your case it's the PSU that needs replacing.

  • After upgrade to Snow Leopard, my external drives do not mount...WHY?

I have spent most of this morning trying to find an answer to why my external hard drives are not mounting in 10.6.1. I have never had a problem with these drives (4 firewire drives). Not one of the will mo0nt. They do not show up under Disk Utilities either. these forums never get to the point and this is very frustratiing. I am not new to mac, I have used a mac since 1989 - never have I had a problem like this. And it seems like others are having the same problems to varying degrees. Why is there no clear answers to fix this? HELP? I need to get to my client files.

If they are Firewire, read on.......
Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that didn't work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
If that still didn't get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
A bad internal PRAM battery can also cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good!
Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.

  • External drives will not mount if wi-fi is on

I was really unsure where to post this. If you think it should be in a different thread then let me know.
My problem is this. I have a Macbook that I use at home no problem. I teach at a college where there is a wi-fi connection that my Macbook automatically connects to. Recently, I have discovered that any external drives will not mount until I switch the wi-fi off. Additionally, almost everything I try and do causes the spinning beachball for 10 minutes or more at a time.
I have searched the net and cannot seem to find any reference to this problem anywhere else. Any ideas at all why this might be happening will be much appreciated.

It was not until Mac OS X 10.6.4, not possible to run on a 10.2 machine, that ExFat was supported.
Many older Macs also will not recognize GUID formatted partitions made to boot Intel Macs either.
10.2.3 is the first system to support Apple Partition Map HFS Extended (Jornalled).
There may be NTFS support based on my tip here:

  • External Drives will not mount

Hi guys ... this is my first post in these forums, so sorry if it is in the wrong category.
I have a Mac Pro, purchased in Feb this year. I have an iOmega Ultramax firewire drive, that is partitioned into four disks.
I have had time machine running well, and it backs everything up onto a second iOmega drive I have.
Yesterday, before I left for work, I saw TM was sbusy backing up. The finder was not responding but I just left it, as didnt have time to loko into it before leaving.
When I cam home last night, I saw it was still not responding, and TM was still trying to backup. All other apps were functioning fine.
I tried to force quit Finder and TM, but it did not work. I then shut down the Mac manually, and rebooted.
The problem has now arisen, where the partitioned drives will not mount at all. The TM backup drive is fine, and I can browse TM fine with it - so good to know all my data is backed up.
I looked at the logs in console, and see the messages saying that the drive cannot mount as it is dirty?
What I have tried as troubleshooting steps:
•Disk Utility to try and mount the drives, but they are not showing up
•Connecting the drive to my Mac Mini - still nothing.
•DiskWarrior - nothing. Only my TM backup drive and Mac HD show up.
•Running FSCK from Terminal. I can see the drives in /dev, but keep getting "Bad Super block" errors. When I try looking for another Super Block, it says nothing found, and would I like to run it manually? The same happens when run in single user mode.
•Unplugging the Mac and the drives from the Mac, waiting 5 mins, resetting the NVRAM and PRAM (booting up holding CMDPR and waiting for the second chime, shutting down, plugging in and turing n drives, rebooting ... nothing!
It seems as though I have exhausted all possible options.
I now accept that the drive is unrecoverable, and am relieved that the TM backups are OK. I am thus happy to format the drive and repartition it, then restore everything from TM. Will be a fairly big job, but at least the data is backed up.
The only problem I have, is I cannot even mount the drives to format them!
Is there any safe way of doing this over the command line. Or even better, has anybody gt any other advice as to options I can try?
I hope I have been thorough enough in my explanation here.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

The only problem I have, is I cannot even mount the drives to format them!
I have a feeling that the partition map is bad. Does the drive itself report to DU? If the drive does show up, you can select that, and click the Repair Disk button under the First Aid tab. If that doesn't fix it, with the drive selected, click the partition tab and re-partition the drive. After that, I would erase the newly created volumes with 1-pass/zero out option selected and restore the data that was on the external from TM.
If none of this works or if the drive itself (not the volumes) doesn't show up in DU, you either have a bad drive or bad controller in the external case. How old is the Ultramax? Just wondering if it might still be under manufacturer's warranty. I would check to see if you are still eligible from the manufacturer's warranty and get the whole external unit replaced. If you are out of warranty, I think it likely that you need to replace that external with a new one. I've had a drive go bad in an external case (this one I could still mount but the heads would 'freeze') and the controller on another external go bad (this one, the drive would not report to DU so I took the drive out of the enclosure, stuck the drive in another case and there was no problem with the drive.)

  • External drives will not mount if the wi-fi is on!

I have had no replies where I had previously posted so I thought I would try here as I think that it is mainly an Airport problem.
My problem is this. I have a Macbook that I use at home no problem. I teach at a college where there is are two wi-fi connections that my Macbook automatically connects to depending on where I am in the department. Recently almost everything I try and do causes the spinning beachball for 10 minutes or much more at a time. Additionally, I have discovered that any external drives will not mount on my laptop, unless I switch the wi-fi off! No-one else is having any problems at all.
One of the wi-fi connections is an Airport Extreme. Each morning my laptop gets the message that there is a problem and I need to update the firmware to 7.5.2. (I originally set the Airport up through my laptop) I am very wary of doing this as everything is working fine for the other 20+ laptops in the department and I have read lots of reports of problems with this update.
I suppose my questions are these - 1 Does anyone have any idea what is going on with my laptop? 2 What should I try doing to solve this issue?
I have searched the net and cannot seem to find any reference to this problem anywhere else. Any ideas at all why this might be happening will be much appreciated.

  • 10.9.1, decrypted G-Drive will not mount

I encrypted a 4tb G-Drive and later decrypted it.  Now the drive will not mount.  It does appear in disk utility but not in the finder or the desktop.  To troubleshoot I rebooted the Mac and the drive (and I powered both completely down), I tried a different usb port (but since it appears in Disk Utility I didn't think doing this would matter).  In Disk Utility the drive shows 16mb free (I have less than 1tb data loaded to the drive).

Solved my problem - no help needed - and I feel kinda dumb.
In Disk Utility the drive was greyed out.  I simply right clicked on it and there was an option to unlock the drive.  I clicked on unlock and was prompted for the drive password - entered password and the drive is now on the desktop and in the finder. Problem solved.

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my LaCie USB 3 drive will not mount

I just upgraded my OS to 10.8 and now my LaCie P'9230 USB 3.0 external drive will not mount. I have re-installed the USB driver and re-booted the computer and drive several times to no avail; any ideas/help?

It's my understanding that LaCie hasn't released a Mountain Lion driver for their PCIe card yet. Sonnet uses a modified version of the LaCie driver and theirs is dead in the water too for that reason-they also warn that their driver won't work with 10.7.5 when it's released.
Indeed, yesterday I pulled the Sonnet USB 3.0 card from my Mac Pro and replaced it with a CalDigit card from OWC; CalDigit has separate drivers for 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 and I can say that the card works with all three, the first time in 1.5 years that I've had a reliable USB 3.0 connection.

  • How do I repair a hard drive that was being written to while my MacBook Air crashed? (Drive will not mount)

My external backup drive will not mount. I have tried to mount it in Disk Utility via the app and the command prompt but the attempt times out. Any suggestions?
I backed up my HD the day before dropping off my Mac for repair, and then tried again just before going to my appointment. During this last and final backup my Macbook Air crashed. I have since discovered that the drive will no longer mount, likely due to the crash that occured during the last attempted backup. I am unsure if the drive can be repaired.
My logic board was short circuiting some where that controls the headphone jack. Initially this prevented me from using the jack but eventually caused my mac to crash several times before I brought it in for repair. I believe that it is the this crashing that is responsible for my back up not being accessible but that my data may still be intact.
Thanks for any help you may have!

If possible, attach it to another Mac and see if it is recognized in Disk Utility.  If so, run Disk Utility>First Aid.  If not, the HDD may be damaged.
    Ciao.

  • Hard Drive will not Mount

I have a Seagate Barracuda 1.5 Gig installed in a MacPro as an additional drive and as of today the drive will not mount.  Yersterday I noticed it ejected itself; I immediately rebooted and started to download the data to another drive but it ejected itself again after about 25% complete copy. I attempted to "verify drive" with Disk Utility but it was not listed.  This morning it will will not mount.  The drive is still under warranty so replacement is not an issue.  Where I am at a loss is recovering the data.  I fired up time machine and there was no data from this drive backed up (Bay 2).  I checked the preferrences and the drive was not "excluded".  So, I'm at a loss as to how or if I can recovery any data.  I removed the drive from the MacPro and fired it up in a docking station (SATA) without results; still will not mount.  Is recovering my data beyond hope? Any ideas or tips would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Koyangie

    Hatter,
Tried Recovery Mode without success.  Although the drive appears in Disk Utility I get an error after selecting Restore!  If I click on the Image icon it will not list the contents.
There is perhaps .6 TB on this driver (images).  After I posted and received yourt reply I took another look at my Time Machine and found all my data under Shared.  What a relief.
Thanks for your advice. I'll return the drive to Seagate for a replacement.  Hopefull I will be able to format it before sending it back.

  • External Hard Drive does not mount

My 2TB external hard drive does not mount and I cannot get it to.  Have tried turning the hard drive off and then back on.  No response.  Any thoughts as to how I can get it to be recognized?

You can try doing a SMC reset, if it doesn't work the first time it's totally OK to reset the SMC several times.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Hard drive will not mount after optical drive upgrade

I recently performed an optical drive install. Had to remove the hard drive bays (I use three hard drives - Luckily, 2 run OSX).
I carefully removed all three drive bays and the empty bay. When I inserted the drives into the computer I had changed the position, swapping one OSX drive with a different one and reversing the drive bays. On restart, the computer started on the drive I had not selected for startup and I received an error message stating the other drive could not mount and it gave three options (Initialize - Ignore and Eject).
I can see the drive in Disk Utility and repair the permissions (it's also located in the System Profile).
I tried a few things I read in the community using various Terminal commands but was unsuccessful.
(Let me point out that I recently switched from a PPC G5 to MacPro and swapped the drives from PPC into MacPro and all has been fine until I removed changed their positions in the bays)
Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend you reformat your drives that you brought over, and if possible put in a Firewie case.
Swapping drives will normally not matter but you should use Startup Disk to reset the default after using Option key the first time.
Putting in an optical device shouldn't require removing the drives to get the cage loose and let you put in a 2nd superdirve.
G5 used APM partition map, Intel Macs use EFI and requie GPT/GUID.
A drive with just data should not matter but that is not fool-proof either.
A drive iwth the system from a G5 though can.
During startup the boot process scans all volumes and looks for systems and mountable volumes.
Pull all the drives except the one with OS X that you were using, and put that in bay #1.
I've moved arrays between bays and that never "broke" the array or had trouble mounting and using (even moving to ODD ports).

  • OWC Mercury ext. drive will not mount via FW 800

    Hi,
I just tried to hook up my OWC Mercury ext. drive to my new Mac Pro via FW 800 on the back panel and the drive will not mount. It does not show up using disk utility. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Try shutting everything down, and unplugging everything for 10-15 minutes.
Then, plug things back in in this order: the external drive firewire cable at both ends; the mac's keyboard and mouse, then the AC power for the mac and the external drive, and lastly, anything else you have hooked up.
Turn on the external drive first, then start up the mac and see if it shows up.

  • External Drive does not mount with Firewire but is ok with USB !

Since 10.4.4 my external drive is no more recognized using firewire, but it mounts perfectly with USB
Using FW request me to reinitialize the disk, but then, the apple disk utility it is unable to reformat!
then I unplug FW , sets USB and everything is ok!
I connected the drive to my old IMac G4 700 and evrything is fine, FW and USB, using the same drive, using the same cable. I did repeat the test many times it is always ok with the old mac and it never mounts with FW on my newer Ibook.
I did reset the openfirmware but that was not successfull!
Then I brought both iBook and the faulty Drive to a friend (he owns a powerbook and also an external drive)
we verified that my drive does not mount on his powerbook G4 12" using FW and is ok with USB.
Then he tried his external drive and was very surprised to find the same fault with his drive and his PB using FW. (as for me everything is ok with USB!)
We are both very puzzled, our drives did work well before, (before 10.4.4 , and 10.4.5 did not improve!)
and now, with firewire, disks never mounts..
In addition I tried with the same cable to alternatively start, using the target mode, the ibook and the imac. For each test they were both recognized as external drives as they should..
So to try to sum up
    - Disk mount ok with USB (1 or 2)
    - Disk is no more recoknized with FW (but it was before with the exact same hadrware)
    - FW Cable seems to be ok as targuet mode works properly
    has anybody any idee?
It would be very munch appreciated..

Hi Andre, I can't remember except to say that it was mounting fine with tiger and I was able to copy files to it for backup purposes.
I just hooked it up to a PC and windows tells me the drive is not formatted. That's not a good sign, and this was stupid: I think I had the drive hooked up to my Mac Pro during the upgrade.
Idiotic, granted. But this was an upgrade, not a full install and I maybe was trusting in Apple's ability not to do extraneous stuff during an install like windows does. Oh well...
I appreciate any further ideas. Many Thanks, Frank.
