G-tech G-drive mini external h.d. won't turn on

I have a new G-Tech G-Drive Mini (500 GB) external hard drive which was just fine the first time I had it connected to my iMac. I got it all set up, backed up some files, put it away and that was that.
Today I got it out, turned the power switch to ON but nothing happened. It won't turn ON. Connected to the computer by an 800-firewire or not, it won't turn ON. No green light, no nothing.
I realize this isn't a Mac question per se, but I bought it at an Apple Store (it's now past the return date) and it's the weekend and G-Tech is closed. And I am VERY frustrated.
Any advice?

If the reset doesn't work, you may have to force iPad into Recovery Mode:
    1. Turn off iPad. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, slide to turn off.
    2. Connect USB cable to computer; leave the other end alone
    3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
    5. Release the Home button
    6. Open iTune (make sure you have the newest version of iTune)
    7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
    8. Use iTune to restore iPad
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad

  • G Drive mini External Drive

    Hi,
I just bought my first external drive... a G drive mini portable and it seems to work fine.
I just had a question about noise. Is it normal for these ext drives to make noises all the time. It seems to constantly be making small static-like noises, sometimes more , sometimes less.
    Thanks alot.

If there isn't a fan in the enclosure it shouldn't make much noise. Is it a 7200rpm or 5400rpm drive? The 7200s due make a little more noise.
I would contact g-tech support about your concerns.

  • G-tech G-drive mini 100gb 72 versus LaCie 100gb 7200 RPM Rugged all-terrain

I am deciding between the above two 100GB 7200RPM Bus powered FireWire drives for video (HDV/DVCPRO) editing. While G-tech seems to have a better rep on this board, the LaCie has a FW800 connection, while the G-tech only has the FW400 connection. Is this important? Will I notice the difference in not having a FW800 connection?

I recieved the LaCie 160GB (granted only at 5400rpm) from a client to use as a transfer drive. I finished a 1 hour how-to vid shot on Pana P2 DVCProHD and this drive worked pretty well. Only when trying to do 3 or more tracks did it start to burp a little. But it could have been the laptop I was editing on. But even over FW400, it held up pretty well.
On my drive, FW800 offers a little speed advantage, but it all has to do with the rpms. I would have loved to get a g-tech drive, but the client bought this one for the project and I am happy. I am also a FCP Trainer and I use it when I travel to sites as my main data drive. Even after quite abit of rough and tumble handling, no problems.
But was orange the only option for a color? Can't lose it though.

  • La Cie Mini external HD suddenly won't power up

I've had a La Cie Mini HD connected to my iMac G5 for over a year, and I just noticed today that it won't power up at all. I've always used the built-in USB port, and the only other device I've ever connected that way is my iSight camera. (I noticed the La Cie went a little wonky whenever the camera was connected, so I got in the habit of shutting off the La Cie whenever I did a video chat.) I've just tested the iSight on both built-in USB ports and the camera works fine, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with the USB port. I thought it might be related to recent software updates (I did the 10.5.8 update and whatever else has come along in the past week), so I repaired disk permissions, but the HD still won't power up. Would appreciate any advice!

    Hello katydid1969
    (1) Can you take another look at your system and perhaps correct your problem statement?
    (2) *Only built-in iSights are connected via USB*, but built-in iSights cannot be "connected" and disconnected.  If your camera is an external iSight, it connects via Firewire rather than USB.
If you are having problems with Firewire iSight when connected at the same time as your Firewire LaCie drives, yours is a common problem that has existed as long as iSight. I believe that the problem relates to the differences in data stream timing between multiple connected Firewire devices.
Although adding additional Firewire cards to tower Macs (iMacs do not have this expansion capability) is reported to work for some users, the *only certain work-around that I have ever found is to disconnect other Firewire devices when using your iSight and turn off or disconnect your iSight when using other Firewire devices*.
For more info, see this linked page regarding Possible Hardware or Software Conflicts with iSight or iChat.
If your LaCie drive is connected via USB, it does NOT likely conflict with your external iSight (or vice-versa.) In that case, you will need to troubleshoot the drive, cables, ports or other USB possibilities.
    (3) If your problem does NOT relate to Firewire devices, we will try to offer other suggestions in response to the details in your reply.

  • My iPad Mini overheated and now won't turn on!!

Last night I plugged my ipad mini in like I do every night to charge it. This morning it was very hot and was turned off. I tried to let it cool down all day and try turning it on then, but it didn't work. It since then I haven't been able to turn it back on. Should I just take it to the Apple store or is there somethingn that I am missing? HELP SOMEONE PLEASE!!!

    Yes it is!
I had the same problem twice! Still under warranty my Ipad mini was on charger durning the night.  In the morning it was very hot and would not start again.  I took it in to Apple store they replaced it gave me 3 months more warranty and 4 months later the EXACT same thing happened to the new mini.  Now they say there is "NOTHING" they can do about it?  This is clearly a design or manufacturing flaw.  Apple needs to recall this product.  I am now going direct to Apple to see what they propose to do.  A full refund or a normal Ipad.  I will only take a new mini if they can show they have fixed this flaw! Anybody else interested in pursuing this with Apple?
Then i got this.... I RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM APPLE SAYING THEY REMOVED MY POST ABOVE. "We’ve removed your post Re: iPad Mini Overheating because it contained either product feedback or feature requests."  NO IT DIDN'T !  APPLE LEAVE YOU WITH NO WAY TO COMPLAIN!

  • Just been watching netflix and my ipad mini switched off and won't turn on again no matter what i do. any ideas?

I have tried pressing both the home button and the power button and nothing happens at all. When I plug it into the mains nothing happens and the same with connecting to my computer. the battery was at around 60% a few minutes before it died so i have no clue as to what has happened :/

    1. Reset iPad (ignore)
    2. Try another wall socket
    3. Try another cable (make sure it's an original Apple cable)
    4. Try another charger (make sure it's an original Apple charger)
    5. Clean Lightning port with compress air

  • AppleRAID and G-Tech SATA drives disconnecting

    Hi
We're working with a 2 x 2.66GHz MacPro, 2GB RAM, digitising HD material with Final Cut Studio 2, onto a G-Tech SATA drive (two external drives in an enclosure, striped with Apple RAID). The drives will disconnect about three times a day, which throws a spanner in the digitizing. If I power the drives down and then back on, it reconnects. I've swapped the cables, moved the SATA card so that there's a gap between it and the Kona capture card, and the problem persists. Here's what I see in the system log:
    AppleRAID::completeRAIDRequest - error 0xe00002ca detected for set "G-SATA" (3A92F239-1E61-4402-A49C-7E02E599859E), member BC894A87-BFB0-4E6D-915E-80DCE942F668, set byte offset = 278947631104.

Does anyone know if this looks like a hardware error (the drives themselves, the cables or SATA card), or something wrong with AppleRAID (ie, would switching to SoftRAID help?) Even though a restart of the drives fixes it, I'm concerned that we may ultimately lose our expensive HD data.
    Thanks!

Is the G-SATA from G-Tech the product you are having trouble with? Is this the link?
    http://www.g-technology.com/Products/G-SATA.cfm
The picture of the card is small but it looks like a 2-port Silicon Image SiI-3132 card. If the card is based on the SiI-3132 design, the latest version 1.1.9 Mac driver can be found here:
    http://www.siliconimage.com/support/supportsearchresults.aspx?pid=32&cid=3&ctid= 2&osid=3&
These 2 port cards works well with individual drives but when used with RAID sets they are limited to approx. 115MB/sec read and write performance. All of the PCIe Macintosh four port host adapters provide superior performance. These include the following controllers:
DAT Optic eSATA_PCIe8 4-Port PCIe Host Adapter $189

  • Mac Mini won't turn over

    Hi folks,
A mac mini in my household won't turn over. It gets to the grey Apple screen with the spinning search circle, but stays that way.
The strange behaviour began after I installed the latest security and safari update via Software Update.
I tried resetting the pram, using the included install disk to check the HD with disc first aid with no results. Will I have to re-install the OS now?

    Your collective help is appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The symptoms you describe and the circumstances in which it occurred are often indicative of a problem with prebinding, and can be caused for example by running the system on other tasks while also applying updates. Prebinding is the process whereby MacOS links executables with their library files, and when it is damaged it can cause the system to become unresponsive or fail.
When you say that you used the install disk to check the HD 'with no results' I assume you mean that it found no problem. Given that you were able to boot the system with that disk, it demonstrates that the system is healthy, so at that point and assuming you did not get any errors when testing with Disk Utility, I would suggest you boot to the install disk again, and select the option to 'archive and install' (an option that is reached by clicking the button for a custom installation). Archive and Install will put a fresh copy of macOS on the drive, but leave your applications and files untouched. Once the new MacOS copy is installed, you can boot as normal and then I would urge you to download the 10.4.11 combo update from the Apple downloads page (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eppc.html) and install that, before running Software Update to grab any additional updates required.
Ensure you are not running any applications or performing any other tasks on the system when performing updates - particularly not when you see the system reporting 'Optimizing system' towards the end of an update. This is when the system is actually updating prebinding, and where running anything else can cause problems. This was a known issue and was resolved in MacOS 10.5.x by a different routine for updates.
As always when doing this kind of work, it is strongly advised that you ensure you have a good backup of all your data first.

    Hi
Did you get the same error message connecting another external USB 2.0 HDD or an USB flash memory stick to this notebook?
    Test this
    Maybe it HDD issue.
Furthermore the USB 2.0 provides an 500mA power if an external USB HDD or USB device would need more power, an issue could appear.
In such case its recommended to connect an USB hub with an external power source between the notebook and USB device

  • Maxtor Mini External Hard Drive slows or crashes my macbook

I recently bought a Maxtor Mini external hard drive since I work with a number of large files, mostly CS3. Anytime I plug in my external hard drive, my computer slows down (trying to save a jpg, takes 15 minutes, copying a 20MB file from the external to the internal hard drive takes around 20 minutes). Anytime I open ANY application on the macbook, while the Maxtor is plugged in, the macbook crashes.
When I bought the Maxtor, I formatted it for my Mac, with the CD that came with the external hard drive.
    Any suggestions?!
    thanks!

You shouldn't need any CD provided by the manufacturer to format the drive. I can't see any particular format type causing that problem though. If you don't have anything you need on the drive now... try formatting it using Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
    http://www.larryjordan.biz/assets/articleimages/lj_journal01.jpg
Try that first and see what happens. Like I said... I don't really see any particular format causing the problem you are having... but since we don't know what the CD you used did, it's best to start clean.
Do you know if you actually installed anything on your computer from the CD?

  • How to drive Two External Displays w/MacBook Pro

I'd like to drive 2 external 24" displays with my MacBook Pro (MacBookPro5,1 -- mid 2009 I think) and have a couple of questions before I spend the money on the displays:
    1) It appears this can be done based on some of the other threads I've read, but I just want to be sure.
    2) I'll buy matched displays, but what is the max resolution I can drive them at? Just don't want to waste money on resolution I can't use.
    3) What video adapters do I need to use for this?
    Thanks much in advance.

The Matrox DualHead2Go DP Edition can drive two 1920 x 1200 displays off the MBP's mini-Displayport:
    http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/
Note that only the DP Edition, and not the Digital Edition, supports this resolution when used with a unibody MBP.
Then there are USB video adapters, all or most of which do NOT support 1920 x 1200:

  • How can i drive 2 external displays with my macbook pro?

I just purchased an Macbook Pro and wanted to know if there is a solution to drive 2 external Apple
Cinema Displays simultaeously.  (Set up so displays operate as 1)?

I believe the TripleHead2GO requires all three external displays to be identical. Verify this with a call to Matrox. There is also a maximum resolution limit for the three displays together, which you'll want to be sure is acceptable to you and will look OK on your monitors. Ideally, the maximum resolution the TH2Go supports for each display will be the maximum resolution each display is capable of when used alone, because the displays will be sharpest at their maximum resolutions. If used at any lower resolution setting, they will be noticeably blurry.
I'm not aware of any other three-display options for the Mac that enable the monitors to operate with normal responsiveness (USB video adapters are slow). Yes, the TH2Go is expensive, and that's probably because it's the only game in town.

  • Will the G-Drive Mini work with the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter?

I'm closing in on buying a new MacBook Pro, but the lack of FireWire on the new retina models is worrying me. I've seen a lot of negative responses in regard to the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, specifically in regards to the G-Raid mini - most of them noting it's the dual drive that's the issue.
So would any of you happen to know - does a G-Drive mini work well with the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter? I will be doing a lot of heavy video editing if that makes any difference.

I found out after purchasing a Retina MacBook Pro that you can in fact use the G-RAID Mini, the way to do it is to have two Thunderbolt to FireWire adapters, plug in the first one to the drive and the computer, wait for the drive to start clicking, and then plug the other cable between the computer and the G-RAID on the second port.
This obviously only works if you have a rMBP as you need the two Thunderbolt ports.
