G3 & Airport Express vs. AEBS's LAN port?

I'm linking a Core2Duo iMac with a 600MHz G3, USB printer, and Earthlink DSL. I've read enough against Earthlink's free Linksys router that I thought to go Apple, esp. on an all-Mac network.
Two options, similar prices: Add an Airport card & adapter for the G3, plus an AIrport Express. Or an AEBS with the G3 in the LAN port -- which I'm hoping can work with no card, no adapter.
Which option's best?
Think that LAN port works on a G3 sans card?
Thanks.

alc323, Welcome to the discussion area!
Which option's best?
They will both work.
Think that LAN port works on a G3 sans card?
Yes. The LAN port is provided to support Ethernet clients.

  • How can I make the 10/100BASE-T Ethernet port on my Airport Express work as a LAN-port? The AE is currently extending my network (generated by a Time Capsule)

    Dear all.
I currently have a WIFI-network established by a Time Capsule. I want to use my Airport Express as WIFI-receiver for my Samsung TV. How do I pair them up so that the 10/100BASE-T ethernet port works as a LAN-port? I used to do it by setting it up as WDS but I understand this is not suitable for a "n" network.
    Thx.

Under the wireless settings for the TIme Capsule, make sure that there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Then configure the AirPort Express to "Extend a wireless network". The Ethernet port on the Express is automatically enabled in this type of configuration and the AirPort Express will also provide more wireless coverage in the area where it is located.
See Apple's instructions in the link below. The iilustration shown in the support document shows an AirPort Extreme as the extending device, but the setup for the AirPort Express would be exactly the same

  • HT4260 Is Airport Express Gen 1 (no WAN port) suitable for an extended network (roaming)

Is the Airport Express Gen 1 (no WAN port) suitable for an extended network (roaming)? It (Express) ha no WAN port.
I have a new Airport Extreme.  I wish to extend the network (wired, not wireless) to an older (Gen 1) Airport Express.
I have followed the instructions explicitly.
EXCEPT: the Airport Express has only a LAN port and no WAN port.  The instructions state to insert the cable from the Extreme into the Express WAN port.
    Solutons? Thanks!

    Thanks, CRMDVM, for that explanation.
I am successfully using the Express as extended (wireless) now with the Extreme as the primary base station.  I will try it (wired) with an ethernet cable attached to the Express (Gen 1) LAN port (which you say also functions as a WAN port in this case). BTW, my confusion arose because Gen2 of the Express includes a WAN and a LAN port

  • Airport express connecting on home LAN

HI, my home is wired for ethernet and I have been trying to get my airport express to work off one of the ethernet jacks, but after setup I just get blinking orange. If I try to set it up directly to the cable modem it works, so there must be something going on inside the router I have for the LAN that blocks it from getting a "green light". Does anybody know how to solve this issue?
    Thanks

  • Can I use the Airport Express only with a LAN connection?

Because I want to connect my macbook (+ all other hardware) via WLAN with my Speedport Router. Which is connect via LAN cable with the Airport Express. Can I then deactivate the WLAN function in the Airport software?
When I try this, I can configure the setup. This works till a restart, after that I cannot find the Airport Express. Already I connect the macbook with the LAN-cable it works again.

    look that
so i have connected my components.
i only want to deactivate the WLAN in the Airport Configuration. if i connected in this way it works without problems. after restart i cannot find the airport express.

  • Streaming 3d movies to my Samsung 3DTV using AirPort express and a wireless LAN adapter has not worked.   What is my cheapest option for making this happen?

I need a transfer rate minimum of 9mbps.  My AirPort express and 3DTV are on different floors, so I cannot directly connect with an ethernet cable.  Can I buy an older AirPort express, use it as a bridge, and connect my TV to it via an ethernet cable?

    Hi rockchalker,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For 802.11n Wi-Fi base stations, creating a roaming network is by far the best choice. This will provide the best throughput between the base stations and your Wi-Fi devices.
If you are unable to build the recommended Roaming network, then a Wirelessly Extended Network is the next best option.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:

  • Airport Express setup. Local/LAN network only. NO INTERNET.

    Hi,
I am attempting to set up a home sharing network for my Grandma that will stream iTunes Movies, TV Shows and music between an AppleTV 3rd generation and an Original iPad via an airport express. My Grandma does NOT have internet and has no plans to get it either.
    2011 iMac:
    - System Mac OS 10.8.3 (Lion)
    - iTunes 11.0.2
    - No firewall up
    2011 Airport Express (Not Extreme):
    - Create network, password protected, no internet - amber light flashing.
    AppleTV 3rd Generation
    - Lastest Firmware
    Original iPad:
    - Latest update for system and all Apps
I set up the airport express to create a network, but without the internet the amber light blinks continually.
I used my iPhone's internet to set up her iMac iTunes and appleTV with my Apple ID and password.
When I disconnected my iPhone from the network everything still worked and the iTunes library media can be seen perfectly on the AppleTV.
However, she likes watching movies on the iPad in bed.
    1. I connected the iPad to the internet and input the correct Apple ID and password.
    2. Disconnected the iPad from the internet and connected to the WiFi (with no internet) home sharing network via the airport express.
    3. The iMac can see the iPad on the network and offers to sync via wifi and everything.
But I can't see the iMacs media library when i open the Videos App on the iPad.
Can the original iPad do this (Airplay?)or can only second generation iPads (and up) stream media content from iTunes?
(I know the original iPad can't mirror but thats all the information I could find on the support communities.)
Is the Airport Express continually attempting to connect to the internet causing network interuptions?
If so is there a way to setup the airport express to JUST be a local network?
On a side note, I have also setup Air Video Server (App and Mac aplication). It can see all the iTunes media files however the network will sporadically drop out with an URL error or network timeout.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    FYI:
I solved the above problem... set everything up.... restart iPad.
The Video app now can see the shared library on the Mac.
Also for those interested in the local network with no internet. I can't give you specifics on the settings for my aiport express but it worked. The amber light flashes but if you set up the airport using the Airport Utility app on your iPhone (vs your Airport Utility on the Mac). The iPhone app gives you extra options to ignore warnings which if selected will turn the light solid green.
    Hope this helps.

  • About AirPort Express 2012 - WAN and LAN simultaneously?

If I connect the WAN port to my DSL modem, and the LAN port to my desktop via ethernet cables, would my desktop and a wireless device work simultaneously?

    Please review the previous answer.
    Yes means Yes
A wireless router will share an Internet connection simultaneously with both Ethernet devices and wireless devices.

  • Problem with airport express connected to a lan with proxy

*in my university exist a lan network with proxy config and port.*
*i searched in the config mode but nothing guide me.*
*If someone know how connect it please answer this topic*
    Jf

I think I have it on the right setting - what do I select in the settings?!
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility.
It said it was going to take an hour to transfer a 250meg file, so thats definitely still going over wifi.
It still going over wireless is correct. Remember your Mac Pros are connecting to the network over a wireless connection. So, for example, when you send a file from one Mac Pro to the QNAP, that file must first travel to the AEBSn (by wireless), then to the AXn (by wireless), before it makes it to the QNAP by wire.
The other option, which theoretically, should improve the data transfer rate, would be to configure both base stations into an extended network. In this type of network, the AXn would be an extension of the AEBSn's wireless network and its Ethernet port would still be enabled for the Ethernet switch.

  • Wired Ethernet + Airport Express could not get them to work together

I am a newbie to Mac. My daughter has a Macbook. No wireless internet access is allowed in her dorm room. Each room has an Ethernet port with a cable so she could plug it in her Macbook and access the Internet. I bought her an AirportExpress a few weeks ago. I set the Airport Express up to connect her printer so she could print wirelessly and stream iTunes to her stereo within her room. I could do both without problem, but if I turned on the Airport on Macbook, Safari could no longer access the Internet. If I turned off the Airport, then the Internet works fine. The school does not allow connecting the Airport Express to the Ethernet Lan port in her room (for security reason), so I could not configure the Airport Express as others would normally do by also plugging in the Ethernet cable.
How could I get the above work by being able to steaming music via Airport and still be able to access the Internet via the wired Ethernet cable. Thanks

ssbkk, Welcome to the discussion area!
By default this is not possible. However using information from Apple's "Mac OS: Connecting to the Internet and sharing files locally at the same time" it might be possible. Try these directions:
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
    Choose the Network preference pane.
Choose the Ethernet port since you use this to physically connect to the Internet.
Click the TCP/IP tab. This pane should already be set up as directed by her school.
Choose Network Port Configurations from the Show pop-up menu.
If the Ethernet port is not at the top of the list, drag it to the top.
Locate the AirPort you want to use for Printing.
If AirPort is not second in the port configurations list, drag it to the second position.
Choose AirPort from the Show pop-up menu.
    Click the TCP/IP tab.
Choose Manually from the Configure pop-up menu.
    Enter these settings:
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    IP address: 10.0.1.201.
Leave the router and other fields blank.
    Click Apply Now.

  • Verizon (Actiontec) and Airport express confusion

I've done some Googling, and it looks like Actiontec/Verizon and the Airport Express generally do not play together. I'm hoping somebody can "fix" what I've done. This is what happened (it'll sound a little convoluted upon brief read... I promise there's logic in my description):
I tried to connect my airport express to a friend's Verizon network (that had default settings... SSID already setup along with WEP password). I didn't connect successfully, so I aborted mission. It seems as though something got messed up in this process though.
The computer I used to attempt to setup the airport express started having trouble connecting to the Verizon router (that previously worked fine). Oddly enough, the network signal or what have you that the Verizon router was emitting (same SSID) didn't show up as being protected anymore. Nothing worked either (couldn't access internet). I tested directly plugging into the router/modem, and I was able to connect to the internet. I reset the router/modem (both by powering off/on and also by holding the reset button), and I still didn't have any luck.
As a temporary fix, I created a new network using my Airport express (connected ethernet from LAN port 1 of the modem/router). This was all just fine and dandy. We were able to connect to the internet with this new network.
I unplugged my airport express once the internet was not immediately required, and I found that I was able to connect to the original network just fine. Oddly enough though, once I was actually connected, it no longer showed up as a protected network (lock icon was gone).
What's the deal? Has anyone had this issue? Should I be concerned that the network doesn't show up as secured? It seems as though it's still secured (as I can't connect without a password once I removed any saved password info and forgot the network itself). I'm under fire as this router/network is a friends... I'd like to be able to "fix" what I've done. Any help would be great.

    1) Can I reconfigure the Airport network setup to stop barking at me for an Ethernet cable?
    Yes.
If you run the AirPort Utility, it will show an amber circle on the summary page next to the area(s) causing the problem. Click on this amber circle and it should provide an explanation. In addition, it should offer you the option to disable any or all warnings.
    2) Can I setup the Airport Express to send the signal to the Epson printer without a USB cable (although this cable is okay to use in her desired setup).
Yes. The Express, as you know, can be configured to provide a standalone wireless network which both the MacBook and the printer can connect to.
    3) Do I even need an Airport Express to make this setup work? Can the MacBook send a signal to the wifi-capable Epson 630 without the need of an Airport network?
Maybe not. The MacBook is capable of being reconfigured to provide a computer-to-computer (or ad hoc) wireless network. You should be able to connect the wireless printer to this network. Unfortunately, I do not have a wireless printer handy to verify this.
When you set up an ad hoc network, your Mac assigns itself an IP address in the 169.254.x.x range; Wireless devices that connect to the ad hoc network pick up addresses in that range so they can communicate.
To configure the MacBook for ad hoc networking:
    1. From the AirPort menu, choose Create Network.
    2. Enter a Network Name, choose a channel (or use Automatic), and check Require Password if you want a minimum of protection via WEP.
    3. Click OK to create the network.

  • Airport Express Port Mapping

I have an Airport Extreme as my main router base station. I recently bought an Airport Express in an effort to connect a Slingbox Pro to it. My Slingbox works ok with my laptops connected to my network but it won't work when trying to setup internet viewing. According to the Slingbox tech, is due to Airport Express not having Port Mapping. Is this true? Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello DAVE72. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
According to the Slingbox tech, is due to Airport Express not having Port Mapping. Is this true?
Not true! The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) supports port mapping. If you are using the AX to provide Internet access from your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) to the Slingbox, only the AEBS would need to be configured for port mapping.

  • Port Forwarding with Airport Express 802.11n Utility version 6.1

    Hi all,
Quick question, hoping it can be solved with a quick answer
Not sure what I'm doing wrong: I'd like to set up port forwarding for Skype and Transmission, however in the airport utility even when I assign the public/private ports to the ones specified in the respective programs (with the IP address for the machine I am using), if I go into Transmission or onto a port checker website the connections are shown as closed for the ports I have selected (on the public side).
I've made a DHCP reservation for this machine to tie it to a given IP address, and I've enabled NAT port forwarding protocol in the Network options (no default host so far).
Also, in case it makes a big difference, right now I'm connecting to the internet via a Cisco DCP3825 cable modem running in bridge mode, with the AEBS in DHCP and NAT router modes.
    Any tips?
    Thanks!

Sadly I never got it to work. I called up Apple and they claimed that all the ports are open for the Airport Express, but if I run port scanner in Network Utilities none of the ports I specify show up as open unless I select one of the "Default" port categories like "Windows File Sharing". I told this to the person I spoke to on the phone, and they replied several times in a row that they are not allowed to help set up port forwarding, that they can only provide info on how to open the ports, and that even if the ports are subsequently not opened or forwarded they can't provide any assistance. It wasn't a very good conversation. Unfortunately, based on some of the other disucssions I've looked at in this forum, it doesn't seem possible to do conventional custom port forwarding using this version of the Airport Utility. Hopefully someone will correct me though. Sorry I can't be more help.

  • Airport Express won't forward port 1119

I can't seem to get my Airport Express to forward traffic to port 1119 to my laptop, even though it forwards traffic to port 55555 just fine.
Airport Express is sharing the public IP with my DSL modem, the laptop has a DHCP reservation, and I have forwarded both ports via Airport Utility > Advanced > Port Mapping. However, tools like the port scan at whatismyip.org show that port 55555 is open but port 1119 is not. I get similar results with port 1120, and putting 1119 and 55555 together inside the same item gives me the same results.
Does anyone know why this is happening or what I can do to troubleshoot? I am comfortable with the Terminal and most networking concepts but this I can't understand.

    Some questions...
    1) Are you forwarding UDP and TCP?
    2) Does the server you are trying to contact require both UDP and TCP?
    3) Does netstat show a listener on port 1119 on your machine?
    4) Are you running firmware 7.5.2?  I and a number of other persons have had
problems like you are describing with this firmwre. In my case a UDP port used
by VPN would suddenly quit forwarding packets. I had to downgrade to 7.4.2 in order
       to clear the problem.
