G3 B&W with G4 processor from Pci Graphics

Hi,
I've recently acquired a G4 processor from a pci graphics model to use with my G3. Everything works fine except I'm not seeing gains in performance in comparsion of my last G3 processor. Is there something else that I should do to make it run in optimum mode?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Filipe

What was the speed of your old G3 CPU, what is the speed of the new G4?
For the most part you will only notice a speed difference when doing any media processing eg. photoshop, i tunes CD ripping, video playback or compressing.
If you want to see a difference try ripping a cd to itunes with the old CPU, then try ripping the same CD with the G4.
Check out this article to see what type of apps most use the AltiVec capabilities of the G4

  • Just upgraded an iMac with 4GB Memory and Intel Processor from 10.6.8 to Mavericks and Quicktime plays m4v files with stuttering audio

I just upgraded an iMac with 4GB Memory and 3.33 Ghz  Intel Core Duo Processor from 10.6.8 to Mavericks.  I now have Quicktime 10.3 which plays m4v files with stuttering audio.  This is a nightmare as I use Quicktime a lot in my research.  I have seen similar threads but so far only reporting the problem.  For now I have installed Quicktime Player 10.7 (which appears in utilities, leaving Quicktime 10.3 in the main applications list) which plays the same videos with no problem, but it would be good to know if anyone has managed to find a workaround at all, or know if Apple have plans to do anything about it?

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.

  • Installing Dual 500mhz Processor from G4

I have a B&W G3 that currently has a 400mhz processor. I just salvaged a Dual 500mhz processor from a dying Powermac G4. How can I replace the processor? Will it work? thanks.

That dual G4 processor uses the 300-pin rectangular connector. The processor board is much larger, and is installed with three or four screws over as many posts on the motherboard.
The Blue & White G3 processors, like the beige G3 before them, and the very first "PCI-graphics" G4, use a 305-pin nearly square pin grid array inserted into a ZIF socket.
They are not compatible, and the signals have been changed -- there are no adapters.

  • Problem using Image Processor from Bridge

I have been using the Image Processor to process photos from Bridge for quite some time. However, I recently received an error message when I try to initiate Image Processor from Bridge and I have not been able to find any help topics that address my problem: I select images in Bridge to process, then click "Tools>Photoshop>Image Processor". Photoshop opens and the familiar Image Processor dialog box opens. Item 1 in the dialog box says "Process files from Bridge only" and has the number of files I have selected in parenteses. I select the file type and other settings in #3, and preferences in #4. When I click "Run", I get an error message window that says: "Script Alert. There were no source files that could be opened by Photoshop". The Image Processor works if I open the files in Photoshop first, then run it by selecting "File>Scripts>Image Processor" and tell it to process all open files.
Would someone be able to help me with this problem?
    Thanks, Larry

Usually when it worked before and not now, and you have added no new software or hardware I recommend resetting the preferences.  Hold down the Ctrl key and click on the Bridge icon to start.  You should get a reset window with 3 options.

  • T61 with Advanced Dock and PCI-e graphics card?

Purchased T61 laptop with NVidia Quadro NVS 140M graphics (Type: 7662-CTO).
Purchased ThinkPad Advanced Dock for use with PCI-e graphics card for multi-monitors.  (Type: 2553)
    OS = Vista Ultimate
Purchased PCI-e graphics card:   NVidia Quadro NVS 440  1x
Purchased four Samsung SyncMaster 740bx monitors
Opened Advanced Dock.  Installed Quadro NVS 440 card in PCI-e slot.  Card fits perfectly.
Laptop using most recent BIOS v 1.26
Set BIOS config for PCI-e graphics and DVI default monitor.
Connected all four monitors via DVI.
Laptop in dock, turned on.  BIOS screen displays correctly on external monitors.  Microsoft Corp. screen displays with progress bar.  Screen then goes blank and next step should be the Windows login.  Login screen never displays, however.  Boot-up of laptop halts at this point and never proceeds.
Removed PCI-e card from dock, and placed laptop back in dock.  Laptop boots correctly to Windows.
Assumed faulty dock.  Called Lenovo for replacement dock.  Replacement dock also fails to boot with PCI-e graphics card.
Next assumed bad card.  Tried different card.  ATI FireMV 2400 1x.  Card fits in dock perfectly.  Laptop still fails to boot with card in dock.
Called Lenovo.  Asked for a list of cards that will work in the dock.  Tech support did not know.  I asked if anyone at Lenovo has ever seen a T61 laptop work with the Advanced Dock and a PCI-e graphics card.  Tech said no.  Issue has been escalated to engineering.  I still do not have an answer as to which PCI-e cards, if any, will work in the Advanced Dock.
    Help please.

I spent some time surfing through product release letters and data sheets for the grafic cards offered by Lenovo, no where, as far as I could see, does it say that they are compatible with the advanced dock. What is also interesting, they say for PCs they are only tested for 2 screens, but you found the document MIGR-67464 where they show how to configure 4. [confused smiley]
It looks as though you and RBS have found possible solutions for 4 screens, congrats to all
However, I don't want to be the "party pooper" here, but why doesn't your T61 boot in the dock with graphics card? This is still puzzling me, and to be honest I haven't as yet been able to come up with a reason or probable cause as to why

  • I have a G5 Power Mac with dual 1.8 processors. I recently upgraded the software fro 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 in order to get an iPad 2. Now my Adobe Photoshop 7 won't work any longer. All the newer Phtoshop versions only work with Intell processors. Does anyone

..know of an older Photoshop version that will work with my processors and system 10.5.8?
    Thanks,
    Don

I believe I had this issue with PS7 when I first upgraded from OS 9 to OS X 10.2 Jaguar.
Couldn't get PS 7 to launch at all.
I ended up having to update all of my Adobe apps to the CS edition to be sure every Adobe app functioned without a hitch.
I am not sure where you'll find older versions of Adobe software, though.
You could try and contact Adobe direct to see if they have any older versions on disc left in stock or not.
Short or that I  really do not know.
PS CS 4 was the last universal version that works with PPC Macs.
Pixelmator used to be available for 10.5 Leopard, but it's no longer available for PPC Macs, either.
    http://www.pixelmator.com/
Could contact them to see if they have the older version still available on disc or as a download.
This is a pay app, also.
Another pay app that may work for you is Graphic Converter.
    http://www.lemkesoft.com/
The other options are the ones already mentioned in the previous reply.
Other than Pixelmator, the other offerings are quite limited compared to PS.
    Here's the link to Seashore.

A free open source Unix replacement for PS is The Gimp

You need to install X11 in order to use this app.
If you installed 10.5, you'll need to check your Applications folder to see if X11 was installed by default.
If not you'll need to go back to your OS X 10.5 install discs and do a custom install and just install X11 from disc.
This will just add the additional program and extensions and will not erase your installation of OS X 10.5.

  • Is it possible to boot a G4 (pci graphics) from an external firewire drive?

I have a Lacie 250 gig bootable external firewire drive which is recognized on my Power PC G4 400 but I cannot get it to boot from this drive. The procedure works fine on my ibook... I looked into a possible firmware update but the apple site says no update is necessary for the G4 400/pci graphics...
    Any suggestions?

There sure are some radically contradictory posts here! (This isn't typical, at least in this section of the Discussions, RMx2.)
Can anyone who has posted here (or might join in here) actually boot from a hard drive connected via USB? I just tested this with OS X and I can't. For some time now, the Discussions have been riddled with posts, whether 100% accurate or inaccurate, that Macs don't boot from USB drives, despite the seemingly conflicting info in the article that Don kindly referenced. (John Huber: Don't eat your words just yet, John!)
Here's my personal experience, for what it's worth... I have a rev.2 B&W G3 which recognizes, reads, and writes to drives via USB, but refuses to boot from them (I tested with OS X 10.3 and 10.4). I also have a QS 2002 G4 that yields the same results. The QS G4 will, however, boot from these drives via FW. I used a WiebeTech ComboDock for testing this with both USB and FW. I tested with two different hard drives, both of which are known to have stable, working versions of OS X on them.
My G3 running OS X 10.3.9 sees the USB-connected drives in the Startup Disk Preference Pane, but when I click to Restart after selecting the USB system folder there, I get a beachball (haven't seen that in awhile...) and have to Force Quit System Preferences. Console tells me that that it could not get open firmware information or set open firmware information, and that it can't touch or set System/Library/CoreServices/BootX, returning Error 1 running bless.
On the QS running Tiger, the USB OSs don't even appear in the Startup Disk Pane of Sys Prefs. I can see the USB drive(s) using the Startup Manager, but selecting them and restarting results in a hung startup to a spinning cog with a prohibitory sign on the screen...
I haven't tried playing around with open firmware NVRAM settings (and don't intend to, except perhaps for trying an NVRAM reset), nor have I attempted to boot to OS 9, reset the startup disk there, and attempt the boot again to the USB device in OS X and in OS 9, which I may try later on when I have a bit of time...

  • Using Image Processor from Bridge

I'm trying to use the image processor from within Bridge. I have done this several times in the past, as recently as last week.
I have some files selected in Bridge. I select "Tools>Photoshop>Image Processor" and the dialog box opens. Step 1 indicates that I have files to process (10 in this instance), and I have JPEG selected as the file type to process. When I click "Run", I get an error message that says "Script Alert" in the title. The message in the window says "There were no source files that could be opened by Photoshop".
I opened the same 10 files in Photoshop, and I was able to run the Image Processor on them while they were open in Photoshop. I'd rather not do this unless I have to.
I haven't added any new programs or plug ins since the last time I used the Image Processor from Bridge.
I had the same problem in early June, and the solution suggested then fixed the problem. I'm experienceing the same problem today, and the same solution doesn't seem to be working now.
The previous solution was to reset the preferences by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on the Bridge icon to start. A reset window with 3 options popped up. Now, w
I would sincerely appreciate any help you could give me with this.
    Thanks,
Larryhen I hold the control key down and click on the Bridge icon, I don't get the reset window. I tried it by control-clicking on the Bridge icon from within Photoshop, and I tried it by control-clicking on the Bridge icon from my desktop with Photoshop closed.

Read you original post again and your last post and now I am confused.
You said you reset your Bridge preferences, yet in post #1 you said " I hold the control key down and click on the Bridge icon, I don't get the reset window. I tried it by control-clicking on the Bridge icon from within Photoshop, and I tried it by control-clicking on the Bridge icon from my desktop with Photoshop closed.
So with this said you have not reset the preferences unless you have gone in and deleted the file.  The Bridge Icon is the one one the desktop that you click to start Bridge.
BUT, in last post you say you have a Mac.  So to reset preference believe it is Cmd key.
No matter how you do it you need to get the reset window with the 3 reset options.

  • Droplet to send images to Image Processor from Mac Finder?

Is there a way to create droplet that will just send whatever images you drop on it to the Photoshop Image Processor script?
Basically the same thing that happens when you select images from Bridge and select Image Processor from the Tools > Photoshop menu.
I'd just like a way to do that via drag and drop from the Finder.
    Thanks.

No, Bridge can communicate with Photoshop to send a list of the selected files, this can not be done with a droplet

  • Running NetWeaver's XSLT processor from Oxygen

    Hello
I am using Oxgen XML Editor (version 12.1, build 2011012011) to create my XSLT mappings. Having tested these mappings successfully offline they are imported onto our SAP-PI ( SAP NetWeaver 7.01 ). However, sometimes mappings that work in Oxygen fail on SAP-PI. Therefore, I would like to use NetWeaver's XSLT processor as Custom Engine within Oxgen.
Triggered by the blog of Thorsten Nordholm Søbirk
Running NetWeaver's XSLT processor from XMLSpy
I copied the archive sapxmltoolkit.jar into the lib directory of the Oxygen installation path. Next I went to menu Options -> Preferences -> XML -> XSLT/FO/XQuery -> Custom Engines and defined the following settings:
    Working Directory = .
    Command Line = C:Program FilesJavajdk1.6.0_07 injava -cp
    "C:Program FilesOxygen XML Editor 12libsapxmltoolkit.jar";
    com.sap.engine.lib.xsl.Process
    -xml="C:     empz_tempinput.xml"
    -xsl="C:     empz_tempstylesheet.xsl"
    -out="C:     empz_tempoutput.xml"
In addition, within the Transformation Options I set:
    javax.xml.transform.TransformerFactory=com.sap.engine.lib.jaxp.TransformerFactoryImpl
For the sake of simplicity I used a plain stylesheet without any Java extensions. When I delete file "output.xml" in "C:     empz_temp" and execute the transformation the file is recreated. Thus, I am sure that the NetWeaver XSLT processor has been used.
However, instead of hard-coding filenames and pathes I would like to use the built-in variables of Oxygen like "$" etc. Most of the XSLT mappings use a Java extension which is located in the same directory as sapxmltoolkit.jar (C:Program FilesOxygen XML Editor 12lib).
There are 2 major problems that I am facing now:
    (1) How must the Command Line look like so that I can use Oxygen's built-in variables as input for -xml, -xsl and -out?
    (2) How must the Command Line look like so that the Java extension archive is recognized?
Your help and valuable input is very much appreciated.
    Regards
      Uwe

  • Can i change XSLT Processor from BIP XSLT Processor to Xalan???

    Hi Oracle friends,
    I have a problem.....
...i'm not able to insert into customizable XSL-FO layout file the current-date() function and other similars, ....and, for this reason, i searched a solution and i have understood that the problem may be the XSLT Processor that doesn't agree extended namespaces of current date and time functions.
I read that in order to activate these namespaces with functions it is necessary a Xalan or Saxon XSLT processor.
After i tried to run the same customized XSL-FO file with Stylus Studio and (with a Saxon Processor) it's ok.
How can i change XSLT Processor from Oracle BIP XSLT Processor to Xalan(or Saxon)???

  • To increase the framerate of a Basler Cameralink Camera(A504K) with a Card Grabber PCIE-1429

    Hi,
I am using a monochrome Basler Cameralink Camera(A504K)of resolution 1280x1024 with a card grabber PCIE-1429 (x4 slot). The image acquisition is controlled through MAX  of LabVIEW version 11.0.1. The problem is that when I try to reduce the number of rows(more specifically Height) from 1024 to 32(say)in the acquisition window(of MAX), the frame rate of the camera should increase almost upto 16,000fps. But it is not going beyond 248fps. Can you suggest  me, why is it so happening, Or How to increase its frame rate? Also, below the image window there appeared something like: 1280x32    1X   8-bit image  9. What does 1X actually mean here? For your ready reference I am also attaching the image of the acquisation window.

    Hi Anto,
things are more complicated in my case. The computer I/O and/or speed of the HDD do no let me to save large stream of frames at desired frame rate. Therefore, I do following:
    1) send each frame into the queue; I had to reduce frame size to 720x512 instead of full resolution
    2) since I have 8 cores on that machine, I created 4 tasks which do only one thing: take a frame from the queue and save it into the disk as fast as possible with no image processing
    3) saving on the HDD is an issue, so each of 4 tasks save frames into the virtual 24Gb drive instead of the real HDD. Even SSD drive will not help you!
    4) note, frames are saved in an uncompressed BMP format! If you attempt to save them as jpg then your CPU will spend crucial 2-10ms for compressing it.
With this implementation and camera (with specs of only 340fps) I managed to grab frames with peak 735fps rate. My point is that your bottleneck probably lies not in the method you use/call to save the frames, but in computer hardware and I/O. You have to accumulate frames in RAM or virtual drive and then save them without processing.
I still have some frame loses, it is approximately 1-2% of the frames are lost. I do not know why.  Some notes:
    1)      to achieve as less as possible frame loss you have to minimize information you output on UI in real-time.
    2)      Utilize multitasking!
    3)      Put highest priority for your VI (check settings in properties)
    4)      In theory the 64bit should perform a bit better than 32bit LabView, in my experience it is in opposite. I run 32bit LabView on 64bit Windows7 machine. This is strange…
    5)      Unfortunately 32bit LV has limitation on RAM allocation (4Gb only) otherwise I would store all captured frames in RAM (32Gb) avoiding even usage of the virtual drive. I use 24Gb virtual drive. It is enough for me to capture frames for about 1-1.5 minutes @735fps.
    6)      If you need any kind of real-time image processing (which I would like to have) then probably you need to purchase FPGA card and program it.
Actually, seem that LabView and VDM modules do not utilize computer hardware optimally. I would like to use the power of all cores and even GPU. The GPU can encode and process images, but LV has limited support of it.
The best option for lossless capturing, at least for me, is to find the time and write a C++ code which will do the job.
    regards,
     Alexander

  • Looking to buy new MacBook Pro for editing with Premiere/After Effects, but wondering about trade-off between Processor Speed and Graphics Card

I'm a professional video editor (using Premiere and After Effects) looking to buy a new MacBook Pro and am deciding between two models. 2. Be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of extra RAM. Loading up the slot will make juggling multiple applications easier, like Photoshop, VLC, and Safari. However, more than 4gigs of RAM will make loading your MBP on startup twice as slow - at least a minute, probably longer. That's why a MBP user with extra RAM should sleep their machine nearly always when not in use, rather than powering off.
I did not know this, I just upgraded from 4gb to 8gb the other day. Have not noticed it being slower, but I don't often shut it down. It's nice to not even have to bother with ifreemem.
    3. Additional storage and RAM will maximize the basic capabilities of your MBP, but you won't be able to make a 2.3ghz machine any faster than it already is.

    4. I still feel that your iMac will be faster than your prospective MBP. The only way to dramatically increase the speed would be the installation of a SSD drive (like the lauded OWC series). But they're not cheap.
I don't want to rain on your parade, but want you to get a more realistic idea of your performance.
I chose a macbook pro, 17" of cause. I use it for gaming. Yes a iMac is better for gaming. But, it's nice to be able to move around. Set up a man cave in the lounge 1 week, or in the bedroom, the next. But you fork out a lot more dosh for that luxury. And yes, not as much power as Poikkeus has said.

  • Using a processor from QS in an even older mac?

    Hello.
Can I use the processor from my old G4 QuickSilver 733Mhz (broken sound output) in my even older G4 466Mhz? They both have 133Mhz system-bus, so If it does fit, my biggest concern is heat issues.
    Thanks.

    Hi
the different caches can be confusing, especially as the Digital Audio G4s use two different G4 variants. The 466/533MHz have a large (1MB) but slow (233/266MHz) level 2 cache. The 733MHz has a small (256K) but fast (733MHz) level 2 cache and a large (1MB) but slow (183MHz) level 3 cache. Just to confuse things further though, the 733MHz processor used in the Quicksilver doesn't have the level 3 cache that the same speed processor in the Digital Audio has!
It's difficult to say how much of a speed gain you'll actually notice. If both Macs are still useable though and have a similar spec in terms of the amount of memory etc, perhaps you could perform some tests with the applications you normally use. Alternatively you could try using Xbench and perform the processor tests, although it's a bit artificial.
If things get too hot the case fan should speed up to its higher setting which will be noticeably louder and/or you'll start experiencing kernel panics. I'd be surprised if you actually destroyed the processor and/or logic board, although I guess it's not impossible.
As well the possible heat issues and 12 volt feed that's needed, before installing the processor you'll also need to remove the old thermal pads/paste from the heat sink bottom/processor top and apply some new. This ensures a good heat transfer between the processor and heat sink.
Finally you'll also need to be careful you don't damage anything during the installation. It's not that difficult to do, but when you remove the heat sink clips you need to make sure the screw driver doesn't slip and damage the logic board. Similarly when you remove the processor card, you need to lift it straight up to make sure the processor socket and pins aren't damaged.
I'm not trying to put you off, but I'd keep these things in mind when deciding whether it's worth doing...
    I hope this helps.
