G3 Blue/White will not enter firewire disk mode

I have just purchased a G5 IMAC (the 20inch model) and want to transfer settings from the OS 10.3.9 operating program on the G3 to the G5 which has Tiger, OS 1.4 on it. The G5 will automatically move data to the right applications in 10.4 if the G3 would start up in the Firewire Disk Mode via the firewire connection between the two machines. Unfortunately, all it does on restart when holding the "T" key down is start up in the the panther (10.3.9) mode. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem. The G3 also has OS 9.2.2 installed on it. The G3 has two firewire ports, each one has version 2.8.6 on the firewire extemsions.
G3 PowerMAC, Blue & White Mac OS 9.2.x and a spanking new G5 IMAC (20 inch)

Hi C3, and welcome to the discussions.
Unfortunately, the blue & white G3 does not support target mode (see here).
You'll have to transfer your settings the old fashioned way.

  • Blue & White will not Boot into OS 9

My son has a 400Mhz Rev. 2 Blue & White. Recently the Power Supply died, which I replaced, but when it died it also took one of the hard drives with it, before that it was working flawlessly. He had two ATA drives, both Maxtor, one the original 6 gig, with OS 9.2.2, and a 40 gig with OS X 10.4.11 on it. It was the 40 gig that died. Like I said I replaced the the dead power supply, pulled the faulty hard drive and replaced it with another one with 10.4.11 on it. The computer would start up, sometimes it would chime, sometimes not, but it would always go to a white screen, with the mouse courser in the top left hand corner and just sit there. I tried zapping the PRAM, resetting the logic board, pressing the CUDA Switch, starting up from original 8.6 CD, a retail OS 9.1 CD, a retail Tiger CD, and even a SCSI hard drive with OS 9.2.2 it. The only thing that worked was the Tiger CD, which would allow me to boot to the OS X drive. But for some reason I cannot boot to any device with OS 9.2.2 or lower. I can boot into classic from OS X, but I cannot boot directly to any drive with OS 9.
So my question is, how can this machine recognize and boot to OS X, but not to OS 9? I can take all the disks and boot to their respective OS's on my Daughter's Blue & White with no problems, but my son's will only boot to OS X, and it just hangs if I try to boot to OS 9.
Any help will be much appreciated.
By the way, I googled this problem, and it seems awhile back someone had the same problem with a G4 Cube, but was unable to get any help. So while it may be rare, it has happened before.
    Ken

    Ken,
A couple more things you should try: First I would try removing the PRAM battery from the computer with it powered off and unplugged for at least 10 minutes. This will completely kill the clock and the PRAM, but the PRAM settings may still hold. Then put the battery in and power it back on. I just replaced RAM in a G4Cube and that was the only way to get the system to accept the new RAM. Of course this resets your system clock to January 1st 1907, which will cause all sorts of complaints until you reset the clock, but it could fix the disparate drive problem.
Another thing to know is that certain PATA drives do not play well together Western Digital and Maxtor for instance. WD Masters expect WD slaves on their chain, so if you are mixing brands, you should try placing both drives in Cable Select Mode. Place the blue end of the ribbon cable on the motherboard, the master drive on the black cable end and the slave on the gray connector in the middle and give that a whirl.
Then you should hold down CommandOption+OF for Open Firmware when you press the power button, that will bring up your Open Firmware interface and enable you to view the startup settings. From there you can specify which hard drive you want it to boot from. If you know the drive and slice you can specify it in the boot-device entry. To view all the entries type "printenv" and press enter it should show a full page of options and then give you the option to press space for the last 7 or so entries. See what boot-device has next to it. It should read something like hd:0:2,\\:tbxi If you don't know what your boot slice is you can wipe out the entry one of two ways: You can edit the entry directly, in which case you would type "setenv boot-device hd:\\:tbxi" Return Then do a "printenv" again. That should show the blank entry--what you're doing is removing the specific boot drive assignment. You might also wish to change the boot mode so that you can see the device messages instead of the gray screen as the system boots. You can do that temporarily by pressing Command+V on boot. To store your new settings and start the Mac type "mac-boot" and Return. To choose which drive you want to boot from hold Option down as it powers up and you should be shown a list of the volumes with a bootable MacOS on them, as the OS Finds the bootable folders. Then you should be able to get Mac OS 9 or X to boot.
Let us know how you make out...

  • 20G iPod will not go into disk mode

    Hopefully someone can help.
I have a 2.5 year old 20g iPod with black / white screen.
I have the unhappy icon showing on the screen. I have tried the 5R's with no success and have been advised to go into disk mode in order to restore via iPod updater etc.
I cannot achieve disk mode and my PC (and other will not recognise).
It also makes a clicking noise booting up, surely the hard drive cannot be faulty after such a relativly short time.
    Any help is much appreciated..........Dave

  • HT1363 My ipod click wheel will not go into disk mode.  All I get is the red circle with the X in it

The only thing my ipod will do is display the red circle with the X in it.  I can not put it in disk mode, it won't work.  It's the 160 GB classic with the click wheel.  Is there anything else I can do to make it work again?

If you are unable to get the iPod into Disk Mode, the Hard Drive is likely damaged and beyond repair. You'll probably want to have it replaced either by Apple or a third party service center.

  • IPod freezes iTunes in normal mode, will not restore in disk mode

Several days ago, I began having problems with my iPod. When I attempted to sync some podcasts to it, I got an error message saying "iPod cannot be synced. Error -48." I was still able to play the music on my iPod, but I would get the same error every time I connected it to my computer. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and restored it, thinking this would solve my problem, but when I put music on it it became really glitchy and the album art was messed up. I once again restored it and encountered the same problem. Eventually when I plugged it in, iTunes would freeze and become non responsive until the second I unplugged the iPod. I put it in disk mode and tried again. This time iTunes did not freeze, but when I tried to restore I got an error message saying it was unable to do so. I tried to manually reformat it through "My Computer," but when I tried it in normal mode it froze, and in disk mode it said it was unable to reformat Removable Disc (E:). I have tried repeatedly to find a solution, tried hooking it up to different computers, but it seems the problem lies with the iPod. I am utterly at a loss for ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just barely tried restoring it in disk mode again on another computer, and was told something new: "firmware is corrupt. Disconnect and reconnect." I've tried it twice and it tells me the same thing after taking a half an hour to download the update.

  • Ipod with sad face and will not stay in disk mode but hdd works

    Hi,
I've got a problem with my ipod and i've tried everything to fix it and nothing works.
So basically after my ipod gave me the sad face I tried putting it into disk mode and that worked successfully! However after I plugged it to my computer, it would (after a few moments and windows detects something being plugged in) it resets itself and gives me the sad face again and following that a sign comes up saying Please Wait Very Low Battery.
I know its not a low battery problem since during disk mode the battery is full.
Other strange things is that in Diagnostics mode the HDSpecs section just shows just a bunch on meaningless characters and numbers for each of the specs listed. I thought that this may have just meant I had a broken harddrive so i got one of those ipod harddrive to IDE converters and plugged by ipod harddrive in (yes i now have opened the ipod). Strangely enough the ipod hard drive appears on my computer and works beautifully and i can read and write to the drive.
I went though the forums and found someone with the exact same problem and was solved:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7244984&#7244984
However the person never said how they solved it except that they followed the guide posted by Mitch 751 which I also tried to no success.
Does anyone have any ideas what else I can try?
    Cheers,
    Victor

Had the same problem, finally realized that the FileVault Encryption was struck at 19%. Speed back up to normal after I disabled FileVault using terminal command - sudo fdesetup diable
To check whether the FileVault is the culprit, go to System Preferences --> Security & Privacy --> FileVault to see if encryption is in progress.. For me the blue bar was less than a quarter with status 'estimating time remaining'..
Then open Terminal and type in: sudo fdesetup disable
It will then ask for the admin password (to be it asked twice), then it was disabled... Back to normal life again..

  • IMac will not boot from any mode except Target Disk

I have an Early 2008 Penryn iMac 24" MB398LL/A running OS X 10.7.4 (see specs below) that will not boot from ANY mode, It also has several strange vertical bars from top to bottom on the screen. They are about 10 px wide, with some pixels empty and looks a bit like a barcode if you squint at it.
I have tried Safe Boot, Force Boot, DVD Boot, FireWire/USB Boot,  and it always gets to the same point. It gets to the apple screen with the spinning gear and then after about 8 seconds it freezes. The only way it works at all is in Target Disk Mode. It pops right up on my Macbook Pro and I was able to grab all my info!
I have run Disc Utilities and Tech Tool on it many times from my MBP and it passes every test.
I reformatted the HD and installed 10.7 again, it still freezes up at the same point.
I have tried using Single User mode and every time have had to run /sbin/fsck -fy twice because it always says the disk is ok but it was modified on the first pass.
I thought maybe it had a bad video card or logic board but and I ran the Apple Hardware Test on many occasions and it always passes. Recently I was told about Loop Mode and just completed running the AHT for just over 30 hours without any errors at all.
    UPDATE...
Strange Part… I tried installing Mountain Lion in Target Disk Mode and everything went smoothly. When it restarted on its own the lines on the screen were gone for the moment, but the Mac still freezes up on the spinning gear and immediately restarts on its own.  I have run every thing listed above on it and still nothing. Sometimes the lines reappear then in two more starts they are gone.
I did manage to have it start one time got a copy of the  the error report (its at the bottom too) The Mac ran for at least 30 minutes with no problems, then the screen went crazy a few seconds and it became unresponsive. The mouse moved but that was all it could do. Now my iMac continually restarts itself, I don't have any more ideas, HELP!

I ordered recovery disks from HP poped the first of two in, but the machine doesn't recognize the recovery disk as a bootable disk. • IPod Help needed from serious Apple gurus - iPod Touch 2g 16g stuck in restart loop. Will NOT enter DFU or recovery mode, NOT recognized by iTunes on Windows or Mac

Ok, so here's the not so sad story. I bought an iPod Touch 2g 16g through Ebay - so forget warranties. Luckily I did not pay much. The description said it was stuck on the apple logo, so I figured it would be an easy put into recovery mode and restore problem.
    Not so much.
If you plug the iPod in and charge up the battery the LCD will come to life after a while with the apple logo, then it displays the spinning wheel with the apple logo over it. That will last anywhere from 10 - 15 minutes, then the iPod will go blank for a few secs and then start up the cycle all over again.
As stated, this iPod will NOT enter either DFU or recovery mode and believe me I've tried it several times several different ways with different timings, connected via USB to a Mac, connected to a different Mac running Windows, and connected to just the charger. Nothing. Occasionally the screen might go blank while holding the power and home buttons but nothing else happens and then it starts it's usual cycle again.
Again, iPod NOT recognized by iTunes on either Mac or Windows side. Since I got off Ebay and seller didn't know much about it, I have no idea if someone tried to jailbreak this or not.
I will not put much money into this machine. So I guess my question is: does this behavior mean that the motherboard is clearly fried? Are there any software programs that might diagnose what the problem is? Could it be as simple as a fried battery?
And most importantly, is this iPod simply toast or is there anything anyone can suggest????
Really any suggestions would be greatly greatly appreciated. Seems a shame to just trash an iPod touch that might need a simple fix...
If it helps matters, I can tinker with iPods somewhat and have torn down and replaced several iPod touch 1g and 2g glass and digitizers with no problems. I'm somewhat software savvy but the whole jailbreak thing is new territory... and I can't really figure out the command in Windows or Mac terminals to list all connected devices so I have no idea if the computer even knows the iPod is there, even if iTunes doesn't. Guess that's it... ummm, please help???

Nothing huh? No one's had this problem or this isn't fixable... oh well... if anybody comes up with anything I'll check in occasionally...

  • Can i install windows 7 via bootcamp (MB Air) while using remote disc? I put the windows 7 disk in my macbook pro drive, and connect to my brand new macbook air. In bootcamp i allocate the partition then i click install and bootcamp will not see the disk.

Can i install windows 7 via bootcamp (on my MB Air) while using remote disc? I put the windows 7 disk in my macbook pro drive, and connect to my brand new macbook air via remote disk. In bootcamp (on my air) i allocate the partition, then i click install, and bootcamp will not see the disk from my macbook pro's drive. How do i get the bootcamp assistant running on my MB air to automatically find the disk in my macbook pro with the ISO image of windows 7? The remote disk on my air can find the cd but bootcamp will not begin installing it. Anyway to do this without buying the damned usb drive?

I don't know first hand if you can use the Remote Disk option with Windows but as of 10.7.2 you can now use BCAssistant to make a bootable USB (thumb drive or external disk) W7 installer with the Boot Camp drivers installed also. Have you tried that yet?
