G3 fails to respond to program disk(s)

I have been operating between Classic 9.2.2 and OSX 10.1 with success for a long time. Attempted to install OSX 10.3 as this seemed to be the highest that one could install to get a large B/up USB drive running. Installation appeared to be successful, System came up, asked for admin password and system rebooted and stuck in 'circle of death' mode with a large grey Apple logo behind. Attempted Control 'C' reboots with all available OSX disk #1's to no avail... disks just keep running... this method had always worked before with no issues. The CD drive is an Apple original internal drive. Help!

Mike-
As another poster suggested, it would help a lot to know more about your machine. In your computer information line you say the RAM is "full" (which I understood to mean the most you could put in which is 700-something MB) but in your post you say it has 200 MB which is nowhere near enough for Panther. I remember 256 MB as just comfortably being enough for OS 9 + a couple of applications! As Grant points out, OSX needs a lot of extra HD space to work and as I suggested, a 4GB drive with 2 operating systems is probably not providing any. The installer is probably just thinking of the space needed for immediate OS files, not what is needed to actually run the computer.
XPostfacto is the helper program that is needed in order to get OSX to run on G3s. If you don't have it then I'm surprised you didn't get a message saying that you could not install OSX on your computer, but maybe it didn't even get that far. It is installed when booted to OS9, then run to enable the computer to boot to the OSX CD to then run the installer.
I think at this stage what is most important is to know more about your computer.
I am beginning to suspect this is a G3 in its initial configuration and may need substantial upgrading to get it to work with Panther.

  • Slow to load all contents of sites, fails to respond to 'back arrow', screen gets white haze, program locks up

Laptop has i5 processor, 4megs of DDR2 memory, windows 7 . Charter Communications internet signal 25 mbps. Firefox opens easily. Google search response is quick. Opening a site is another issue. Home pages initially open quickly, but Firefox lags in loading all the elements of page content and frequently will not respond to the "back" button" when navigating a site, especially on CBS sports Fantasy Football site. On these occasions, Firefox displays notation "Firefox can not locate site/file server" or "Firefox is not responding". When this occurs, a translucent white haze is displayed over the site graphic and Firefox locks up.s. Only option is to exit Firefox, frequently having to force the program to close.

If you have the same symptoms after restoring the hard disk to its original factory-new software and replacing the BIOS, that leaves only malfunctioning hardware as the culprit.
What you report is consistent with a failing hard drive. The disk keeps accessing over and over in attempt to successfully read or write. It appears slow as a result.

  • Disk Utility: Burn error: 0x80020022 The device failed to respond...

I've been working on archiving a ton of video to DVD. I'm using Dual-Layer discs to minimize the amount of physical storage space needed for the finished project. I burned several discs in iDVD in July and regularly received errors. Then the drive suddenly stopped loading any type of media. Anything I inserted would spin briefly and then eject. Repaired permissions and followed steps outlined here and here. Took the Mac back to the store where I bought it (sadly, not an Apple Store - nearest one is 12 hrs away) where naturally it performed flawlessly for the store rep.
So I took it home and resumed burning, now saving as a disc image (ignoring iDVD's warning about the performance of DVDs burned this way) and using Disk Utility, since iDVD didn't seem to be reliable. Burned about 25 discs, error-free, in this fashion, then three days ago, got the error: "Unable to burn “Disc 19.img”. (The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.)"
Retried the same image, and it worked. Then burned two more in the same fashion with no errors. Today I got the same error again. Logs are identical for each failed burn, except for the time span between certain lines.
Price of DL media being what it is, I'd hate to keep ruining discs if there's something I can do to avoid it. I suppose it could be bad media, but it seems odd that I'd get two bum discs that close together after burning so many without issue. Checked the site and the forums, and there doesn't seem to be any answers. Does anyone have any ideas? (Other than "try a different brand of media." I've got a buttload of these discs and it's too late to return them now.) Even if it just helps determine where the issue lies. Warranty will be up soon, so if it's hardware related, I need to get it taken care of quick.

I have encountered the same problem. I have a Mac Book Pro from 2007, and it has gone through 3 DVD writers so far, all of which have ruined DVD+R DL disks. I have occasionally been able to burn one, but usually during verify, I get this error message:
Communication to the disk drive failed: 0x8002022
And disk utility fails with a "Invalid B-tree node size" error
Oddly, when I try to burn a disk near capacity (6.5Gb or more) it is more likely to fail than if I burn a smaller disk.
I've been using Memorex DVD+R DL disks, but I have used other brands in the past but they have failed, too. Out of about 50 disks so far, I have had success with about 5.

  • Ix2 fails to respond, cannot get past login screen

I am having intermittent problems with my Iomega ix2 failing to respond. After some time being on the drive fails to respond. I cannot open any files through Windows explorer. If i attempt to connect using the web interface i cant get past the login screen. I put in my user name and password and hit enter. The page simply reloads the login screen. The only solution is to power the drive down using the button on the back of the unit. Powering it up it works fine. Eventually though this will happen again. It's happened a half dozen time or more in the last few days. Now I'm stuck out in the field and cannot access any files. Please help.

No. No errors in the event log of any kind other than the time sync error. I recently replaced one of the disks as it had failed. I receieved a warranty disk from Lenovo/Iomega about a month ago. i installed it and it rebuilt the RAID with no problems. This error has been happening since then. When the time sync error happens i get all kinds of strange behavior. SFTP, which is how I access the files, will start giving Goodsync 'cannt reach end of file error' type errors. Like I've mentioned before I also get an issue where the web login screen gets caught in a loop too. I type in the user name and the password, hit enter, and it just reloads the login screen again. Rebooting the device from the power button on the back is the only solution.

  • "device failed to respond properly" error

I have a mac mini sans dvd burner. Thus, I was happy to get a Plextor PX-740UF dvd burner in the mail. The fun stopped once I tried to burn a dvd. I have gone through 10 dvd's so far with no luck. I have been reading this forum trying to find a solution. I have tried Verbatim DVD-R lately. I saved a disc image and tried to burn it with the disk utility. Everytime I get the following error: Unable to burn "name.img" - the device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.
iDVD keeps giving me a multiplexor error. Nonetheless, I don't understand the error from disk utility. Why or how could a device fail to respond? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Are you doing it right? see below:
    File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Failed to respond problems

After happily video conferencing with my Mum back in England (I am in Thailand) we have recently received the dreaded Failed to Respond regardless of which one invites the other. We eventually managed to obtain pictures by following some of the suggestions on the discussion but I think the main success was rebooting the router. Unfortunately whilst we can obtain two way pictures we can only obtain 1 way sounds depending upon who invites who.
Neither of us have touched our computers to make any changes and are both on the same latest versions of the software, Tiger and iChat so are wondering why this is happening now rather than before, any ideas?
My machine seems to have also taken to shutting down and restarting for no apparent reason including one time just completely freezing 'off' and not able to restart even after unplugging the power.
Surely this 'failed to respond' is something Apple needs to look into urgently as I am rapidly losing faith with the supposed 'plug and play' sales pitch when it seems anything but!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This failed to respond is as much an issue with the AOL servers that iChat has to go through as anything else. This has been discussed at length in the forum.
However, your system shutting down on its own is most likely not an iChat problem, and probably a power supply issue if not set up in your Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Schedule button. This I would take up with AppleCare. There is an repair extension program for certian iMac G5s:
    http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
See if your iMac G5 qualifies for it if you are not under AppleCare or the one year warranty.

  • "Failed to respond" cause has been found for me

I, like many of you, have been having problems with "xx failed to respond". I just found out from my ISP that the telephone company here (Pakistan) is blocking ports 5190 and 5060 which basically shuts down iChat and gives you that message. You can still text but audio and video are blocked. I guess they think I'll actually use the telephone and make them more money if they do this. The million dollar question...is there a way around this?

    The plot thickens.
My ISP is routing my traffic through a tunnel now. I downloaded IPNetMonitorX and the tests seem to confirm that the tunnel is functioning if I'm interpreting the program correctly. I used some of the IPNetMonitors features to trace the route and discovered that I'm getting at least a .25 second delay consistently between two servers. Would that kind of delay cause a timeout issue that would result in me "not responding?" See below:

The second thing I discovered is that when I traceroute to login.oscar.aol.com I get up to one of their internal servers and then it never makes it to the final destination. I'm not sure if that is a protection feature and should be considered normal. See hops 16-18 above.
I rechecked my connection speeds and I'm at 460 down/319 up. I've also bypassed all routers and I'm connected directly via ethernet to the dsl modem. I'm not sure what else to try. Hopefully Apple reads these pages and realize they have a real problem based on the number of posts.

  • Unable to chat "because user failed to respond"

I and my family are having trouble using iChat AV for video chat. The problem also affects audio chat.
Essentially, when person A invites person B to chat, and person B accepts, there is a delay with the spinning indicator (which always pauses momentairly in this process) and then person B sees an error message saying that person A "failed to respond". Messaging works fine.
My father experienced this issue first, unable to connect to my brother. However, I was able to connect to both of them. Recently, I was invited to download an iSight Updater, and since this the problem now affects me.
My father uses iChat AV v3.1.6 (v441) on OS 10.4.8 on a G5 iMac
    I use iChat AV 2.1 (v153) on OS 10.3.9 on a G4 iMac
I believe my brother also uses OS 10.3.x
Can anyone provide any assistance as this problem is getting us down! Thanks!

    Hi Perseverance,
This info suggests that ports for iChat are not open somewhere such as the Mac Firewall or the modem.

  • "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly"

    Hello everyone,
I have suddenly developed a problem when trying to burn a CD. I get the "Checking playlist" and "Initializing" messages, and then Writing...(the name of the first track)", but about 20 seconds later, just when seems as if it will start burning, the CD is ejected and I get the following message: ""The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry."
I have browsed the forums here and it seems that many other people have had similar problems. I am running a Powerbook G4, OS X version 10.2.8, iTunes 6.0.5.
I have used several different brands of media, and many slower burning speeds, but nothing helps.
I can still listen to CD's with my computer, just not burn anything.
My computer is about 5 years old. Do you think that this problem is suddenly occurring simply because my optical drive needs to be replaced?
Also, another issue, possibly related, but maybe not, is that, after my burn failed for the first time, I put in a completely different CD to see if it would play. It did, but instead of listing the correct tracks on the CD, it showed the tracks of the previous playlist that had the failed burn.
For example, I imported the tracks from one CD into my Library, then moved them to a playlist. When I tried to burn the contents of that playlist to a CD, I received the "attempt to burn failed" message that I previously described.
Then, I inserted a completely different disc, but iTunes read it as having the same contents of the playlist that had failed to burn, but when I clicked on the track titles, they played from the new CD that I'd inserted, not the failed playlist. So although the titles indicated that I was working with the failed playlist, the media that played was from the new CD.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Sarah

I'm having a similar problem. In my case, the problem started about two months ago. I regularly update software. Currently I'm at 10.4.10 and iTunes 7.3.2(6).
In my case, I'm trying to backup recent iTunes purchases. I'm unable to burn CDs with the original combo drive (CD) or my internal NEC burner (DVDs). I get a series of coasters. Occasionally .Mac Backup fails as well. Toast 7 works fine. Even stranger, I can burn 1 DVD successfully with an external Pioneer DVD burner (4x) USB 2 using iTunes. (I have a belkin USB 2 card) Multiple DVDs fail. I recently switched to this PowerMac from an iBook and several preference files were copied with my home directory during the transition. The external drive was used with the iBook, but not on this system before which may lend to the preferences file as a possibility.
However, I find it odd that my external drive works and both internal drives are failing. I was suspecting the IDE controller on the logic board, except that Toast works. This logic board is not as old as the computer. It was a replacement in 2005 when an after market ATI card fried and took it and the power supply out. At first I suspected a hardware problem and replaced the IDE cable which looked warn. The NEC drive is about two years old and the combo drive is the original. They are on the same controller.
In my case it is certainly possible the drives or controller are starting to fail. I wonder if anyone else might have an external cd/dvd drive they could test that are having the problem.

  • Help - failed to respond - ichat os 10.4.7

i just bought 3 new macbooks. 1 for my fiance, 1 for myself, and 1 for my inlaws as i am moving out of state in two weeks.
i have an OLD g4 cube and an old ibook with an external, firewire isight camera. when i use both the ibook (wireless) and the cube (direct ethernet connection to my comcast cable modem) i am able to ichat with my sister who is in nyc.
when i first bought the 1st macbook i brought it home and successfully connected with my sister, in her apartment, and video-conferenced.
i then bought the 2 macbooks, set them up at my fiances house. 1 was hard-wired to their ethernet connection, the other was working wirelessly. we were able to connect and ichat in their house.
my fiance brought her computer to my house last night, we upgraded her and my OS to OS 10.4.7.
she went home, we connected via our wireless chats ONE time ... then when we tried later - we each got the "failed to respond b.c XXXX did not reply" (each got it on our own computer for our own names)
i was able to connect my macbook to my ethernet and ichat with the computer that was hard-wired at her house, but once i removed my hard-wire connection at my house, i lost the connection immediately
i then took out my isight and cube and connected to my parents computer again, i also used my ibook laptop and connected with the isight again ... when i tried to use the new macbook - failed to respond again and again and again
please - i'm so frustrated - can anyone help after that verbose explaination of my problem

    Hi bginz,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
Ok it is a bit like this.
iChat reads the Connection speed via a setting in System Preferences for Quicktime.
WHen a computer is started up for the first time the full Bandwidth is passed to iChat
In subsquent iChat/computer start ups the Quicktime setting is used.
If this is set to Automatic it returns a 0 to iChat and caps the Bandwidth.
Go to System Preferences > QUicktime > Streaming tab and set the drop down to match your download speed.
If your connection is fatser than 1.5meg then use the 1.5meg setting.
Some of your problem may be related to the routing set up you have on your LAN.
Hw are you set up with regard to IP issuing from your modem ?
Is it using DHCP or have you set up Static routing ?
IS there any other routing device involved ?
This will lead to how have you opened the ports to allow different computers to use the iChat ports ?
Can you confirm that the initial connections are form the AIM Buddy List and not the Bonjour one ?

  • Repairing Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 using program disk

My computer (Windows XP) can no longer use the scanner (Cannon PIXMA MP780) to import photos to Element 6 because it can't find the CNCSCM60.DLL file in D:\Windows\system.
When I use my program disk to reinstall or repair Elements, the screen display shows this progression: the disk is initializing, validating the initialization, then seems to stall and displays a message to Insert Disk: 1. There is no disk 1 and the program disk is already in the drive. What do I do to repair CNCSCm60.DLL?

You can't do a repair install on any version of PSE except PSE 6 for mac. You will need to uninstall and reinstall. But I'd try reinstalling your scanner software first.

  • New macbook pro fail to respond to the power button

Why did my new macbook pro fail to respond to the power button?
I have a new 13" MacBook Pro Retina (10.9.1) which I have been using for about 3 weeks. I am new to Mac and am in the process of making the transition from Windows XP.
Today, with the battery at 100% and the power lead disconnected, I left the mac with the lid closed but, when I returned, it did not come back to like when I opened the lid. Also, it would not respond to the power button.
After some web searching, I managed to get it back to life after resetting the SMC.
Is this a software problem, or is it more likely to be a hardware problem?

Highly unlikely that software is involved - especially since resetting the SMC corrected the problem.
Unless it happens again, I would forget it. If it occurs again, take it in for warranty service.

  • Insufficient bandwidth/failed to respond

I cant 1 on 1 video chat. most of the time when i invite there is a delay and then it says i failed to respond. on the other end it tells them that they failed to respond. occasionally it will say insufficient bandwidth.

    Hi Shawn,
Can you tell us what your settings are in:
    1) System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab ?
    2) iChat Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit drop down ?
    3) What your Mac Firewall settings for iChat are ?
    4) What you modem Port settings are for iChat ?
    5) Are you still on 10.4.2 or have you updated ?

Oh, createinstallmedia only runs on OS 10.9!  Oh!  The 9999 is if you try to run it on an earlier OS!  Oh! Linc means to update the current drive to Mavericks, and then one will be able to run createinstallmedia, if one has first saved away a copy of the installer.
But if, like me, you are trying to create an installer to do a clean install on an empty drive, without replacing the earlier OS on your current drive, then...
You must use the slightly more complicated instructions you can find all over the place that look like
Right click "Install OS X Mavericks.app" and show package contents
Find a certain .dmg file and double click
Find a hidden .dmg within the drive that mounts from the first .dmg
Double-click or use "mount" on the hidden .dmg within the .dmg
Use Disk Utility to "restore" the second disk image onto the erased USB drive
Then replace an alias folder with a copy of a huge folder within the first disk image
I had success with the "Option 2: Use Disk Utility" section here.
