G3 has failed... need to use 8.6 drive in series with an OS 9 HD- Doable??

I am giving up on trying to restore an old G3 and thus have my HD, a WD1000, which was
OS 8.6 - and all its content, orphaned. I have a spare AGP G4 with an OS 9 system. Ideally
wanted to just plug this old drive into a spare bay on that machine. Can I have an 8.6
system volume/disk on the same machine? Ran DiskWarrior on it --(it needed major
repair after some hardware issues on the beige G3 - can no longer boot it on that
machine for unknown reason - no video, no recognition of drive but chimes on...may
have messed something up in doing PMU resetting and replacing the battery?)
Also find that I cannot boot the DiskWarrior-rebuilt drive when I put it by itself in
the AGP G4 and attempt to start up on it. I also can't seem to get that G4 to boot
up off an OS 8.5 CD.
Kinda lost on how to proceed here - Main goal is to just be able to boot from this
older 8.6 disk again. Sorry if this should be under another topic but it sorta relates
to OS 9 insofar as wanting to try and have two bootable drives, one with 9, one with
8.6, in the same computer. Also would welcome any ideas as to why it the sawtooth
G4 isn't recognizing the 8.6 startup drive...i thought this was 8.6 and 9-compatible.
Thanks much,
Mike

Hi, Mike -
What would be the most expedient way to do this?
You have a 10GB drive in the G4, and an 80GB and 100GB that you want to move into it.
Pick one of the two larger drives, probably the one with the most free space on it. If both have 15GB or 20GB of free space available, or more, pick the one jumpered as Slave. If the 10GB is a Western Digital, reset it to Master if it is now set as Single.
Once the second drive is in the G4, boot the G4 to the 10GB drive using OS 9. Throw away the OS 8.x System Folder on the second drive. You might also want to discard the programs and utilities for which you have newer versions with the OS 9 install.
Then copy (drag and drop) the contents of the 10GB drive onto the second drive. Don't overlook anything that is lying on the desktop (do not copy the Trash, printer, or any drive icons).
Provided the copied OS 9 System Folder is blessed (displays the Mac OS glyph on top of a standard folder icon), you can test boot to that install right then, using Startup Manager control panel to select the second drive.
Once you have a successful boot to the second drive using OS 9, you can remove the original 10GB drive and install the other drive from the G3 in its place. Be sure you end up with one drive jumpered as Master and the other as Slave.
Comments -
• It is good practice to leave 15% of a drive unused. A too-full drive can cause behavioral problems, such as an inability to Save or Find, booting or running glitches, or other irregularities.
• Since these two drives from the G3 may be older that the G4, it would be a good idea to run a utility such as DiskWarrior to examine them for health.
• It does not make much difference which drive is Master and which is Slave. For most purposes those are just addresses; either can be used as the primary boot drive. About the only exception is if the machine is ever set up in a Firewire Target Disk Mode config with another Mac - in FwTDM, only the drive jumpered as Master on the Target machine will appear on the Host machine's desktop.
• After copying the contents of the 10GB drive to the second drive you may need to fix a few aliases. An alias is not much more than an icon with an embedded pathname to its original, to the item it represents; when an alias or its original is copied to a new volume, the pathname embedded in the alias is not rewritten to reflect a new location for the original. Aliases needing fixing can include one for Sherlock in the Apple Menu Items folder (in OS 9's System Folder), perhaps a few in the Application Support folder in System Folder, and any you may have created. If you do a Get Info on an alias, the embedded pathname is shown to the original, and there is a button in the Get Info window ("Select New Original") that allows you to fix an alais; you can also just create a new alias and discard the non-working one.

No problems when i used with Snow Leopard. I upgraded: Now Kreonika is not happy. Not happy at all!

In cases like this, if you have an Apple store near by, they will most likely install the OS free of charge for you, if you can't bring your Apple ID along to prove you've paid for it.
Would that work out for you?

if you read it it says to open the Flex folder and change the name. I did that and the apps work but I was not asked for the serial number again. I was in in 10.4.11 and just upgraded to 10.5.4 could that have caused this as I was running fine before.

    Hi Willcarter,
It is all up to you. You can use the phone line which came with the printer or you can get a new one. It does need to be a 2-wire phone line though.

  • Details needed for using two hard drives with one iTunes library

I posted this under the iTunes section but now that I think of it, it's more of an Apple TV question since I'm only concerned about how it affects my 2 ATVs.
I have a MacMini(G4) that acts as a media server for our 2 ATVs. I use one library on the Mini which has been using an external 750GB drive. However, I'm at nearly 95% capacity now and want to invest in another external drive and use both. So the question I posted on the iTunes section was...
"With far too much content in iTunes (mostly for the Apple TVs) and after reading numerous posts about using external hard drives with iTunes I'm convinced that using two external drives is my best solution.
However, I did want to understand a bit more about the details of how iTunes will manage or at least keep track of, the media. Specifically, I'm thinking of the case were I add a movie to iTunes library (of course it will not copy the file into the iTunes folder).
What will occur if I later change any of the tags for the movie (e.g., name, genre, year, etc.). Will iTunes update this information and then update the Apple TVs once they resync with the iTunes library?"
So for the very knowledgeable folks here on the ATV section, what exactly does iTunes do in this case? Will my genres be updated correctly if I change something even though the content is not copied to the iTunes folder?

If you want to use two external drives to store your itunes content, there are a couple of ways you could go about it.
You could choose to have just movies (for example) on one HDD and everything else on the other. You could further choose to have your itunes music folder on one HDD and have all content copied to it by default. When it comes to movies (in this example) you can place these on your second HDD and add them to itunes by using OPT-drag, which will temporarily disable itunes from copying the file to your itunes library.
You could also entirely disable disable itunes copying files to your itunes music folder from the itunes preferences and manually manage all your content.
Personally I'd just buy a 2 TB (for example) drive and ebay your old drive once you have moved everything from it to your new one.

  • Drive failed -trying to use other optical drive

    Okay here goes.
Drive failed on my MacBook Pro.
Want to load and install new OS.
I put the OS DVD in my son's iMac > shut it down > restart in Target Mode
Have the iMac and MacBook Pro connected by Firewire.
Start MacBook while holding down the option key > MacBook shows a pic of a HD and an arrow > click the arrow > MacBook starts up as usual but shows the connected iMac as an external drive
My problem is I need to access the DVD drive on the iMac in order to install the new OS.
So, what am I doing wrong?

    Got the needed advise.

  • Does LV Code developed using NI-CAN driver softare works with other NI modules using NI-XNET ??

    Hello,
I have developed LV software using NI-CAN driver software for my PCI CAN/2 series card and the software works perfectly. I would like to know that can I use the same LV program without modifying it with other NI CAN module (i.e. NI 9862) which uses NI-XNET platform ????
    thanks in advance.
    regards,
    swap

For existing NI-CAN applications to work, both NI-XNET and NI-CAN drivers must be installed. The NI-XNET installation package contains all of the necessary components for the compatibility library to function. The compatibility library translates / maps a NI-CAN function call into the equivalent NI-XNET call or property.
While the NI-XNET compatibility library for NI-CAN (NI-XCL) strives to ensure basic functionality, you cannot always completely map the library from NI-CAN to NI-XNET because of either hardware-specific features or core differences in the NI-XNET platform.
In general we do expect that you can run you NI-.CAN code as is on NI-XNET hardware.  Just  some functions may be incompatible or need workarounds. For a complete table, see the NI-CAN Hardware and Software Manual for Version 2.7 or later.

  • Can I Use a network drive to work with Mac and Windows?

Is it possible to introduce a network drive which can be accessed by both Mac and PC? I manipulate images in Photoshop on my Mac but the software I use to create slide shows is only available in PC format. This software is used more or less universally in the area of photography I am invo;ved with so changing is not an option. Can anyone advise me please.
    TC

Yes sure. Any NAS type drive formatted in any way will work. Both Mac OS X and Windows communicate by Ethernet Packets to a Networked drive and it is up to the NAS device OS to translate those Ethernet Packets to the format used on the drive.
Even if you are using a standard external drive connected to a Router or another computer, which is what a NAS is (A self contained computer with Operating System and hard drives), that router or NAS box does all the translating.

  • Superdrive has failed - need replacement suggestions

My superdrive is in the process of failing. Symptom is that when there is a disk in the drive, the machine won't boot! Boots fine with no disk in the drive. So, I'm replacing the superdrive.
Does anyone have any suggestions for aftermarket models?
    Thanks.

Well, I got a budget Sony superdrive to work in my beige G3 under OS 9, though Panther acted a total prat with any superdrive I tried - even with using PatchBurn. Just some flooky issue with the device profiles not loading in Panther.
In OS9, the drives (both the Sony and the Pioneer I used) could even boot. I don't think at this point, with the system you list on your profile, that you'll have a problem with any manufacturer. I'm a bit baffled that your drive is going up the spout as soon as it is - have you tried cleaning the lens? It's a real PITA to do - I usually pull the drive and open it up and clean with a damp q-tip with a bit of ammonia and water and dry w/the other end. The lens looks delicate but they are actually more rugged than you think and can be jostled a bit (a little bit) during cleaning w/o any problems.
(FYI, the Sony SuperDrive is now happily purring away an old external LaCie USB DC-ROM case, and living with my brother. The Pioneer DVR-112D is in my beige G3 which is now a dedicated vinyl LP and VHS ripper and burns DVDs daily)
Beyond Panther's problems with it, the Pioneer DVR-112 runs like a champ.

  • 'Assertion has failed' Error when using Save for Web (PSCS)

This problem is due to the Save for Web preferences becoming corrupted.
Delete the Safe For Web Preferences by holding down CTRL+ALT whilst clicking on File>Save for Web.
(the Save foe Web preference file is saved at:
    C:\Documents and Settings\~username\Application Data\Adobe\Save for Web\8.0\
if you wish to delete manually)

You are not really making sense.
    a) Viewing images at more than 100% in any viewer will introduce resampling from image to screen space. Different tools use different algorithms, but none of them will ever be perfectly "sharp". Again, simple mathematics.
    b) JPEG is a compressed format that will never produce "sharp" lines in areas that don't coincide with the underlying block compression. If you wanted that, you'd use PNG or other formats.
So unless you can provide screenshots that illustrate your issue better at 100% zoom, I see nothing out of the ordinary here. Of course there could be all sorts of issues liek color space conversion or odd pixel sizes causing unfavorable distribution of compression blocks, but we realyl cannot judge any of that based on teh info you provided. Just saying that something doesn't look like you experct it to isn't really helping...

  • ISynch has failed after successful use

I have a new iMac and a SonyEricsson w850i. I have used iSynch satisfactorily to synch these. I tried yesterday to use it with Bluetooth to synch my Calendar and Contacts with the files on my laptop, but it would not do it. Since then I can no longer synch with the mobile phone: once the process is started the phone immediately drops the connection. I have tried turning both iMac and phone off and on again but the problem persists. What can be done?

First, try clicking "Reset Sync History..." in iSync preferences, and see if that allows it to sync.
If not, work through the suggestions on the page below:

  • I need help using multiple internal drives

I have 3 internal drives and 24GB of Ram on an early 2009 G5. I've recently upgraded one drive to yosemite but my current applications are on the other drive;  running 10.7.5.
I didn't want to reinstall all the apps on the yosemite drive so I was wondering
if there is any issue with using one drive for applications and another for work/storage.
Keeping all my apps on drive running 10.7.5 while everything else is on the Yosemite drive.
Is it advisable to do? Do the apps run any slower this way?
    Thanks for any help.
    M

You could add a fourth drive, clone your 10.7.5 system to it, and upgrade the clone to Yosemite. That way you still have your clean Yosemite drive and your working 10.7.5 system in case of trouble with the upgrade.
In the event that an app needs to be re-authorized when moved to a different drive, do you have a record of the relevant serial numbers?

  • Hard drive failed, can I use an external drive as my main HD?

Took my 20" iMac to the Genius Bar today and my hard drive is completely shot. It would be $250 to replace it but I was wondering if I could run it off of an external hard drive or do I absolutely have to get a new internal drive? Any suggestions or ideas would help! I just don't know about dropping $250 on a 5/6 year old computer. Thanks everyone!

If you want, you can look up how to replace the drive yourself on YouTube and buy a new hard drive from Best Buy or any other computer store that sells Mac-compatible disks. I did this and I was able to save $100 by not having Apple do it for me.
I think it might be theoretically possible to run the system off of an external drive, but it's not that reliable. I tried it on my external drive, formatted it correctly and everything, but it failed about halfway through the OS X installation, so it may not work for you.
