G3 IBook 2001 Dual System 9 & 10 won't start

I have a white IBook that I want to give to my grandaughter for her homwork. It has systems 9 and 10 on it. I took all of my files off the system 9 and restarted in system 10 (which worked before). There is a momentary happy mac then it breaks into two pieces (broken system?) I have lost the disks that came with the computer. How can I restart the computer in system 9 (or anything else) so I can work with it.

I fear that you have deleted components that you should not have deleted. Getting them back requires the CD's that came with the iBook. Check out the Apple Knowledge Base article Mac OS X: "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or kernel panic when computer starts and see if anything there helps.
Hindsight is 20/20, but one should not delete something without the ability to replace it, which is what you have done with OS 9, evidently, by deleting it when you don't have the system CD's to restore it.
You may have to call Apple, give them the serial number of the iBook, and see if they have the original software CD's available to you. If they do, they will send them to you for a fee.
Good luck.

I have an iBook with Dual USB that won't fully turn on. it flashes a "?" and the Mac face symbol in a folder i the middle of the screen. How can I trouble shoot?

Restart with the Option key held down and see if the internal drive appears.
If it does, click on it, press Enter, and then change the setting in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences or the Startup Disk control panel.
If it doesn't, insert a Mac OS install CD or DVD and use the Disk Utility or Disk First Aid to repair the internal drive. If there aren't any problems, install an OS onto it.

  • Power Mac Dual G5 2Ghz won't start up

    Hi,
Last night I was playing a DVD on my dual G5, and the superdrive started to make unusually loud, weird noises. I tried to restart the computer from the apple menu, but it wouldn't. Then I tried to force quit all my apps, but it wouldn't either. So I proceeded to push the power button for 5 secs. and that worked. Now the computer won't start. I tried resseting both the PRAM and the PMU, but it still won't start. All I get is the power light fading in and out, like it's breathing.
Any ideas or suggestions as to what may be going on?
    Thank you ver much,
    Daniel

I have the same problem with a different twist. I was playing a DVD based game last night, logged out to go to bed, then this morning the computer won't wake up, won't reboot, there's no fan or hard drive sounds, but the status light just glows, no flashes. The only way to turn it off was to unplug the system. When I plug the computer back in the light comes back on but it still won't start.
There was a power outage this morning and several over the last few days. Otherwise there were no other changes to my system. The most recent installations were Quake and Age of Empires III (the game referred to above).
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • IBook G3 has "clicking" noise, won't start up!!

So I have had MANY problems with my iBook G3 ever since i purchased it in 2003. I have already had the hard drive replaced in it before, i've had memory added to it,etc. but since August of this year i've tried to solve this one and I can't. I don't know what to do!
First whenever I turn it on, a clicking sound comes from where the hard drive is, about 15 clicks usually i guess, which I'm sure means it is broken or not in good shape. If the screen turns on (otherwise it just stays black after the startup chime and clicking) then an icon of a question mark on a folder flashes, which I've learned it can't "find" the hard drive in one way or another, correct?
So i've been able to start it up in Target Disk Mode and connect it via FireWire to my iMac G4. the FireWire logo for Target Disk mode appears on the screen (otherwise the screen stays black like when I try to normally startup) like it should when it is started up in Target Disk Mode. However, it will not appear on my iMac. is it not mounting somehow? i'm not totally familiar with accessing files off messed up Hard Drives but I would love to know what I can try because I had my life of music and pictures on my iBook. it has also had a lot of motherboard problems over the years and this might just be part of that problem too.
Is there anything else I can try to get my files off my iBook? i don't care about it never working again... i just want what's on it. is there anything Apple can do? I'd LOVE to be able to do this myself but I'll take it to Apple if I know they can help me somehow...
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
If Safe Mode doesn't work for you, try starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive. Again, take note of (and please report back here on) S.M.A.R.T. status and available hard drive space.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.
    Good luck.

  • System preferences won't start up

I recently installed OS 10.6.2 and I'm suddenly having a problem. I cannot open system preferences. I tried opening from the dock, from the applications folder, and by selecting under the apple icon. Nothing works. When I try to start it the small blue dot pulsates under the system preferences dock icon for a second or two, then stops. Nothing else happens.

  • System monitor won't start.

I am having a problem and I am not sure how I caused it or how I can fix it.
when I try to start system monitor I get this following error.
    [jacko@kermit ~]$ gnome-system-monitor
gnome-system-monitor: error while loading shared libraries: libsigc-2.0.so.0: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32
    [jacko@kermit ~]$
what should I do to fix this problem? I am using arch 64, the only things I have installed that are 32 bit is skype and flash I believe.
I don't wanna break my other programs to get system monitor working either...

  • Safari Crash - Safari won't start for specific user

Hi all, for a specific user on the system Safari won't start, the crash report is pasted below. Safari starts up fine for the Guest account and admin accounts. The user in question has a network home folder mounted on our server using AFP - not sure this is relevant though really.
Can anyone decipher this crash report? Any clues?

Hi all, for a specific user on the system Safari won't start, the crash report is pasted below.
Safari starts up fine for the Guest account and admin accounts.
The user in question has a network home folder mounted on our server using AFP -
not sure this is relevant though really.
    Very relevant, yes
Safari 4.1 & 5 appear to have a bug causing Safari to crash at startup for networked home users -
a good work-round is to disable webicons or create a local link to the file/folder, or to force Safari to store the icons locally...
    See this thread for details

  • Power Mac G5 won't start up after a security update, please help!!!

    Hi all,
My Power Mac G5 version 10.4.11 keeps showing a black video, no beep, no start up chim, this occured after updating a security patch 2008-7 from Apple website, asked to reboot then I encountered this mess.
The powerlight is turn on with solid white color. My display also has its powerlight turn on with solid white. But not nothing happens, except the fan noise becomes gradually louder and louder. I wait for hours ... but ...
My system just won't start up. Although I tried to reset the SMU, reseated RAM...
I tried also to re-install the OS by CD but it's impossible to insert it to the DVD tray.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you for your time.
    Sgmed.

    Hi BDAqua,
After weeks of strugle I can use my MAC as normal, but everytime I shut it down, she cannot wake-up, I had to refer to your hints in order to start it up again. So right now I can use my MAC every day with "SLEEP" mode.
She just cannot RE-START or wake up after a SHUTDOWN.
Any suggestion is greatly appreciated, here under I pasted the log file retrieved from Disk Utilities.
(I tried also to reset PMU, SMU and PRAM but nothing helped. Perhaps she is in need of a brand new PRAM battery???

  • PC Won't Start - No Power?

I've been having some serious power issues with my 3-month old PC for a few weeks now. All was working perfectly fine until the PSU (450w "Zorro" PSU - came with my case) accidentaly got switched to 115v mode while still plugged into the computer and plugged into the 230v mains.....oops. Needless to say it did not survive the experience, and it was sent off and duly replaced with an equal model.
Then, I installed this PSU into the case and plugged it all in. The computer booted, as did windows, and all seemed OK.... at the desktop at least.  But, whenever I got into a CPU and graphic intensive game the PC shut down. And wouldn't turn on. That was, untill I took the power plug out of the back of the PSU and then re-inserted it, at which point I could start the system up again. And once agian it would crash, most often while playing Unreal Tournament 2004 "Carball" mod. Prime 95 also crashed the PC after running for about 1h30mins.
Anyway, thinking the PSU was at fault i returned it once again. This time, the company tested it and said it ran perfectly for 4hrs with no faults.  So, upon recieving the PSU back, I duly reinstalled it into the case. After reconnecting all of the cables etc, I pressed the power button. Nothing. Nada. System just won't start at all.  And i'm completely baffled as to why.
I have tried plugging in the power connectors to the Mobo (K7N2 Delta ILSR) again, both the 20-pin and the 4-pin one. I have tried pushing in the power switch connector again, and tried reversing it, incase I had it pushed in the wrong direction, I have tried resetting CMOS and setting J10 to safe mode. I have also checked that the CPU cooler is attached and plugged in properly. I am stuck for ideas here, I really am. AFAIK the system hasn't been touched since I took the SPU out, so I'm not sure why it isn't even booting at all at the moment.
If anyone has ANY ideas about this, please don't hesitate to mention, even if it is the stupidest idea you've ever had lol, I'm really stuck with this. I'm thinking of taking everything right out of the case and installing it all again, but I want to know if i've done something really stupid and abvious before I do this. Thanks
BTW, my system specs are as follows.
Zorro PC case AKA Raidmax Scorpio 868
    450W Zorro PSU. +5v 25A, +12v 30A
    MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR
    2x512 Sticks Samsung M3 3,3,3,8 RAM
Power Color Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb
    D-Link DWL 520+ 22mbps wireless network
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 1.65v Stock Settings
Zalman CNPS 6000 CPU cooler @ Max
    5xCase Fans
    MSI Audio Bracket Thing
    40GB Maxtor HDD
    60GB Maxtor HDD
Samsung CD-RW and DVD (not writer) 52x48x24x16

That was what iI am starting to think now, but there are some problems with that theory. Firstly, when the PSU blew up, after I got the replacement the PC did actually start up, and could run at the desktop for absolubly ages, >10hrs, while playing music and browsing the net, but when running stressful programs it turned off. Also, I tried a less powerful 400W PSU in the system, and that seemed to perform perfectly fine indeed. I also ran Memtest 86+ for a while, it did 6 passes, I think, without problem.  I do have other systems, but none of them would support the proccessor or RAM.
I think the problem MUST lie with either one of 3 things.
    1) The power button connection has come loose. Although I have checked it on the Mobo I can't actually check it at the power button itself as it is hidden. I might try and multimeter the cable to see if it is connected.
2)The power connectors to the Mobo. These connectors could be broken so the system isn't getting any power. Alternatively it could be the slots on the Mobo.
3)The CPU fan connector. This could be damaged and cetain motherboards don't let the power be started up without the fan being connected. Dunno if the K7N2 series does though.
4)The mobo itself is damaged and won't work.
Whats also puzzling though, is that the system kept shutting itself down and then wouldn't turn on again unless the power plug was removed from the back and reinserted. Any idea why this might happen?
Also, on the components damaged issue. The motherboard should start up without the processor, Ram, Video card etc installed right? Otherwise what is the point of the MSI D-Bracket LED diagnostic system thing? This displays certain LED patterns when the system has a fault, for example a faulty or damaged processor etc. Therefore the systme must be able to get power without a working processor etc. For this reason I think it must be one of the reasons mentioned above.

What error message(s) did you get with the Mac OS X 10.5 DVD? Is the Mac OS X 10.5 DVD the full retail install DVD, an upgrade DVD, or a DVD that came with another Mac?

  • IBook G3 Dual USB won't completely boot

I have an iBook G3 Dual USB 500 mhz. I went to boot it up the other day, i heard the boot sound, saw the initial grayish screen with the apple logo. then it went to a tanish screen with the folder with a question mark, then the folder with the mac face. and it continued to go back and forth with those two icons. I thought it was the hard drive so i replaced it with a good one. But it still does the same thing.
If i try booting while holding the option key,the blue screen that comes up for the boot source comes up. It identifies the hard drive, and if there's an install disc in the drive, it reads that as well. If i try booting from either location, it just refreshes the pages.
Or if i holding the "c" button down while booting, it goes to the screen with the ? folder and the mac face folder.
    Any suggestions?

If it won't boot from a known good disk, then it's likely that there's been a hardware failure, probably the logic board. You can try resetting the PMU, via the instructions in this document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431
and see if that makes any difference, though it's a long shot. If that fails, then your iBook has probably gone to the "great beyond".
    Regards.

  • Old PowerBook 1400 charger power iBook G3 Dual USB?

I ordered an iBook G3 Dual USB (the white one, not the clamshell iBook) but I only have a 45W PowerBook 1400 power adapter. Will this power the 500MHz system?

It would, except the adapter tip won't fit in the power socket of the iBook. You will need a newer adapter with a smaller tip to fit the iBook G3 (Dual USB).
If it doesn't come with an adapter, here are some possible sources for the right adapter, including some less expensive third-party adapters:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8943LL/A

    http://www.teksale.com/laptops/laptopparts/listings/apple-ac-adapter-g4.htm
It doesn't matter whether it's a 45 or 65 watt adapter; either will work. (The 65 watt is needed for newer PowerBooks. It won't hurt an iBook to use a 65 watt adapter with it, even though they originally came with a 45 watt model.)

  • Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows

I've got a Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows. I've tried all of the following initial tests as suggested on forums:
    -Ram swaps
-Alternating video card in PCIe slots
    -Trying alternate video card
    -resetting pram and smc
-Multiple tests with memtest86+ over 26hrs and no failed ram
-Multiple tests (8-12 cycles) with apple HW diagnostics and no problems
-Firmware is approved firmware for early 2008 model...no new updates.
Gentoo livecd works fine and I even installed to hard drive and it boots fine with it. In addition to above tests I also ran a linux stress test putting all 8 cores at a load of 22 for 2.5hrs with no problems.
Memtest86+ for 24hrs+ yields no problems.
    Where problems occur:
Booting off hard drive, DVD or firewire yields an immediate curtain of death and booting off a new snow leopard DVD dies about 25% into the install.
Looking at error log and a quick dmesg shows "Package 0 didn't get an HPET" and complains about AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext. Google turns up illegal uses of this, so doesn't apply to my use case.
I'm a bit stumped since all was working well until one day it was non-stop curtains of death and can't get them to go away.
A logic board replacement at $1100 is not a feasible option for something that works on linux and windows, but not OS/X, is a bit disappointing and somewhat surprising.
Thanks for your help and advice.
    Regards,
    Marcos

Someone here once thought they knew EFI and Open Firmware a little, and used some commands from OF library that an Intel EFI Apple system didn't like. New logicboard.
Of course to run or boot OS X and see video you need EFI based card. The presence of some PC cards can block OS X from booting.
The fact you get part way through SL DVD, pull all the drives, put in a new drive and format it from SL DVD.
Most of the things you tried are what are more common with PC hardware. Including where people have tried and failed to install OS X on unsupported hardware.
I suppose it is possible something tried and failed to modify the Mac's firmware.
If you have Windows running, and you have WD drives, WD just posted new Lifeguard utility which is what I use to do a good job of stripping a drive down and recertify it for reuse, works wonders. Maybe same for other makes with vendor utility.

  • IBook won't start up in Mac OS X

    Hi,
I have an iBook G3 with operation system OS 10.3.9 that I've been used for years. Recently, it just won’t start up in Mac OS X, the computer stops at the screen with a gray apple and a spinning gear. The last thing I remember doing is looking for physical address (Ethernet HW address) of the computer and didn’t change any setting. I don’t recall updating any program the last time I used it.
The computer passed all testes with “Apple Hardware Test” come with the computer.
I’ve tried everything that I can perform mentioned in "http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464". I once had the computer start up in safe mode to remove all login items as the document said and then I can never get into safe mode at all. I can now still boot into single-user mode but nothing worked.
I have two partitions (A&B), partition A has operation system installed. I used “TechTool Deluxe 3.0.2” to repair the disks, and partition B passed all testes and A sometimes passed all and sometimes failed on ‘Linear Read/Write, Random Read/Write, Read/Write Buffer’.
I can’t repair the volumes (both A & B) with disk utility using OS 10.3 install CD nor can I Archive and Install OS 10.3 on partition A, they both show the same error “could not unmount disk (-10000)”. I tried to erase partition B and it still showed “could not unmount disk”.
If possible I would like to save some files in partition A and I don’t care B at all. However, if necessary erase entitle disk and reinstall could be an option, though I don’t think that would work at current stage.
Any idea? Thank you in advance.
    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Are you booting from the OS X Installer CD? You cannot repair a startup volume. If DU cannot unmount the volume it's because the volume is in use which suggests you did not boot from the OS X Installer Disc. I suggest you do that. After the installer loads select your language and click on Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu. You can repair both volumes this way.
The problem you describe at startup suggests that there are missing or corrupted essential system files. The only fix is to reinstall OS X. You can do an Archive and Install only if the hard drive is OK so repairing it is essential if you want to do an Archive and Install.
How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
