G3 iBook wakes up as soon as the power adaptor is plugged in

My sleeping iBook will wake up (even with lid closed) as soon as I plugged in the power adaptor. Also, if the power adaptor is plugged in, closing the lid won't put the iBook to sleep. Instead, the sleep light will come on for a few seconds, and then disappears and I can hear the hard disk spinning up, then the sleep light will appear again and the cycle repeats...But when I then open the lid, the iBook will then go to sleep!!!
This only happens if the iBook is in power adaptor mode. In battery mode, the iBook will sleep just fine by just closing the lid.
I repaired permissions and reset the PRAM, but to no avail. What could be wrong?

Hi Missy L,
I don't know wether reinstalling Tiger would help. It might very well be a hardware problem. Did your iBook come with a hardware test CD? In that case, start from CD (insert CD and restart while holding down the "C" key) and run the Hardware Test. Maybe it will show something. Re-installing should only be your last resort.

  • The Power Adaptor's Prongs

Okay, I just bought the power adaptor you plug into the wall and then use it to power up your iPod (mine is iPod nano 4GB White English). The thing is, the "prongs" you snap out do not snap out all the way-about 45 degrees.
Now, I may be too paranoid, and not pushing hard enough, but I pushed pretty hard, and they stayed put (I do not want to break this expensive thing!).
Any tips, telling me I should just push, et cetera?
    Thanks in advance.

Never mind, it was paranoia, I found out long ago. Just posting to make sure none of you get all excited.

  • Using the Power Adaptor

    Greetings,
When using the power adaptor should I take out the battery?
The reason why I ask this is that I use to have a Sony laptop running Windows 2000 and had continual problems with the battery not holding its charge. I was eventually told by the Sony technicians that once the battery was fully charged I should remove it from the laptop whilst running from the mains.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello!
You might try posting this in the appropriate Powerbook Forum. We don't know much about laptops here in the G4 Tower forum.
If you have a G4 iBook post here.
    Cheers!

  • ZR65MC camcorder does not turn on with battery in position unless the power adapter is plugged in

Bought a ZR65MC camcorder in 2003.  Enjoyed it so much, but a couple of yrs. ago, the tape compartment stopped opening.  I just purchased another ZR65MC (used) on ebay in hopes that I could at least get the videos off & onto DVDs.  Also, we are planning trip to Yellowstone soon, so camera/camcorder will be nice.  Problem:  The used one does not turn on with a fully charged battery unless the power adapter is plugged in.  I assume battery is good because it turns on my older camera.  I do need backup batteries in both, but have not done this yet.  Please tell me I have not purchased a bad camera, maybe just doing something wrong?  Would have never purchased a used camera online, but did this time.  I have ordered a new battery BP-522 with wall charger.  It should arrive next week.  Any suggestions?

    Hi Sharon72064,
If the new battery won't power the camcorder without the Compact Power Adapter, unfortunately, it's likely that an internal component has malfunctioned.

  • Why does my macbook only turn on when the power adapter is plugged in?

The battery life says its at 73% and climbing but whenever I unplug my power adapter the mac automatically shuts down and if I try to turn on the macbook without my power adapter plugged in, it wont turn on. How do I make it go back to where I can turn the mac on without it being plugged in? Thank you for your help!

I would try two things the first being resetting the System Management Controller:
    1) If the computer is on, turn it off.
    2) Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
    3) Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
    4) Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
    5) Press the Power button to restart the computer.
If that doesn't work I would recalibrate the battery.
    To calibrate the battery:
    1) Plug in the MagSafe power adapter and fully charge the MacBook or MacBook Pro battery until the light on the MagSafe connector changes to green and the Battery icon in the menu bar indicates that the battery is fully charged.
    2) Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for two hours or longer. You may use your computer during this time as long as the power adapter is plugged in.
    3) Disconnect the power adapter with the computer on and start using it with battery power. When the battery's charge gets low, you’ll see the low battery warning dialog on the screen.
    4) Continue to keep your computer turned on until it goes to sleep. Save your work and close all applications when the battery's charge gets low and before the computer goes to sleep.
    5) Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or longer.
    6) Reconnect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged. You may use your computer during this time.

  • May I use the power adaptor for Macbook pro into Macbook Air?

May I use the power adaptor for Macbook pro into Macbook Air?

Yes.  You can use one of a higher wattage, just not a lower wattage.

  • What does the power adaptor look like?

Did Apple make any changes to the power adaptor? Is it thinner too? I am waiting a month or two for the 1.6 MBA regardless of changes.

The Mag-safe connector is physically the same. A MBP or MB adapter will physically and electronically work with the MBA. However, since the MBA's port is facing down, you will need to account for this when using an MBp or MB adapter, either by charging the MBA upside down or some other fashion.
the physical size of the MBA adapter looks smaller than the MB adapter, but this will still be unanswered until someone can compare them in person.
The power output for the different adapters are:
    MBA: 45 watt
    MB: 60 watt
    MBP: 85 watt
You can use an MB adapter to charge an MBP, but the battery will charge very slowly.
You can use the MBP adapter to charge a MB. It will not send the full 85 watts.
Apple can not warrant or guarantee no problems when using a different adapter than intended so do this at your own risk.

  • Is there away around the Power adaptor icon for my ipod?

I did a factory reset on my iPod today b.c i have been having trouble syncing up the ipod using iTunes. I used the latest firmware updater from Apple btw.
So when the factory reset was complete the app told me to plug the iPod into it's power supply, but I don't have one!
Now the ipod has the Power adaptor Icon on it because it's waiting to be pluged in, is there a way around this? I'm using an Apple USB cable if that makes any difference.
    Thanks, Tim

Connect the iPod to your computer with a FireWire cable if your computer has a 6-pin FireWire port, or use a car adaptor, or try the option on this page.

  • I unplugged the power adaptor and suddenly, my mac started beeping repeatedly like an alarm. What does this mean?

I unplugged the power adaptor and suddenly, my mac started beeping repeatedly like an alarm. My mac was fully charged and would not start up. I pressed down on the restart button to reboot it and the noise stopped.
    What does this mean?

Hi, it indicates a RAM problem, (or Logic Board around the RAM).
The power on self-test resides in the ROM of the computer. This test runs whenever the computer is turned on after being fully shut down (the power-on self-test does not run if the computer is only restarted).
If a fault is detected during the test, you will not hear a normal startup chime. Instead, the system will beep as explained below. If you experience one of these beeps, you may call your Apple Authorized Service Provider for additional troubleshooting assistance.
1 beep  = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • My MacBook Pro is plugged in and running on power from the power adaptor, but the battery isn't charging - what do I do?

The magnetic charger and port are clear and clean and clicking into place smoothly.
My Mac has had 2% power for the past few hours but is running on power from the power adaptor.
But the battery isn't charging - what do I do?
    Thanks!

Depending on the model of MBP, buy a new battery or take it in for servicing to get a new battery.  You could also try an SMC reset to see if that helps, but your symptoms don't sound like the ones normally solved by a SMC reset.

  • Is there suppose to be a charging light when using the power adaptor?

I just bought the power adaptor for my ipod shuffle 2nd generation. I plugged the adaptor in the wall, connected my usb line , plugged in my ipod and there is no charging light to indicated if the ipod is charging. Should there still be an amber light to let me know if the ipod is charging with the power adaptor or not?

YES! There certainly should... I have an older version Apple Power Adapter (for the iPod Photo) and it lights up my Shuffle's status light.

  • Fan running constant at 6200rpm only when connected to the Power Adaptor!

My fans are runing constant at at 6200 rpm, the temperature is around 50 degrees Celsius.
No other processes running in the background Activity Monitor shows around 2-3 usage after reboot.
I did a reset of the SMC.
Funny thing is, if the MacBook is not connected to the Power Adaptor, running with the battery, the fan is running at normal speed between 1500 and 3000 (depending on what programs i use) and has the same temperature at around 50 degrees.
I am sure that it is not the Power Adaptor, i have two, one at the office and one at home, and the MacBook is only loud, connected to the Power Adaptor.
3 Year Extended Waranty just run out 3 weeks ago...
Any hints or ideas which part could be broken and should be replaced?
Is there some sort of Power Management Unit?

I did a reset of the SMC (see my first post). Did not help.
Actually i did everthing you can do, including a fresh install (10.5.6) and not updating to 10.5.7 (some had problems with their fans updating to 10.5.7), also a Harware check, safe boot, etc. Did not help at all. Now running again with 10.5.7.
I was wondering if there is a actual hardware part i can replace.
My stoneaged Powerbook had some sort of a circuit board that managed the chareging of the battery, etc. This board could be replaced.
Or do i have to accept it, that my MacBook believes to be a helicopter now.

  • My macbook air keeps shutting down unexpectedly, any thoughts? It seems to be while streaming movies etc and i think it's when the power cable is plugged in, not while on battery

It's only 3 months old, I think it's mostly while streaming movies from the net whilst the power supply is plugged in? I have seen a couple of other similar posts. Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated.

    Try a SMC reset.

  • Laptop freezes when the power cable is plugged in.

I have a satellite A205-S4777.  When the power cable is plugged in the machine freezes.  The machine works fine when working on battery power alone.  Any suggestions?

I'm assuming this is out of warranty. If you're comfortable doing so, you could use a digital multimeter to check the output of the AC adaptor and ensure it matches what's on its label. If it's incorrect, you would need to purchase a replacement AC adaptor. If it is correct, the laptop might need servicing. If you're not comfortable using a digital multimeter or don't want to purchase one, you still might want to take a guess and try replacing the AC adaptor, but you can't be positive that it's the cause.

  • Is the Power Adaptor required?

I'm getting a 4gb nano and since you can update the firmware on it, is the poweer adaptor required to finish the update? The Adaptor is not included in the box and this worries me.

No, it's not required for the Nano.
