G3 iMac 333Mhz not reading CD's burned on my G5 iMac!

I'm trying to refurbish my older G3 iMac & install Panther, for a friend of mine who can't afford a computer. I've suddenly noticed that CD's I've burned on my G5 iMac are unreadable to the older iMac, giving a message that the disc is unrecognizable, and do I want to erase it. It reads many other CD's just fine, original application CD's, the Panther install CD's, including some I burned on a previous eMac I had. I called Apple about this in a panic, and they couldn't imagine what could be wrong, they had never heard of such a thing. All they could say was that the drive must be going bad. But it reads all other CD's just fine--just not the ones I've recently burned on my new G5 iMac. Then they said that maybe there is something wrong with the CD's I'm using, but they can be read just fine by my new iMac and many other computers, including the old eMac that my daughter now has. I even take files to CopyMax for printing on those same CD's and the PC's read them just fine.
Apple suggested that I try purchasing other CD's and try out different brands. Meanwhile, the stack of 50 that I just purchased, I won't be able to use with this old iMac. They are Maxell's by the way, and the label says CD-R. Does anybody out there with a similar 333Mhz G3 iMac with a tray loading drive, have problems reading certain brand burned CD's from another computer? Or have you heard of such a thing? I hate to keep buying different brands to see which ones will be readable by the old iMac. Any advice you have would be appreciated. Thanks!
Kristy

Thank you both, dreed and Ron, for your advice and comments. It's good to know I'm not the only one with this problem. And since I am just getting this iMac 333 ready for my friend to use, I don't have the money to replace the optical drive for her. I will try Charismac Discribe. Is it a shareware program? And is it very expensive? I still have some CD's I've burned on my eMac, that can be read by the iMac 333 just fine--for me it just seems to be CD's burned on my new G5 iMac that won't work--or Maxell's, because this is the first time I've used that brand. I usually buy Memorex.
Ron, it looks like we took the same computing path. The description of your two machines match exactly the configuration of my last two Macs, right down to the amount of memory in each of them & everything. Maybe a G5 iMac is in your future! These second generation ones are really wonderful! I know how you feel about the slot loading iMac, though. This is the first time I've had a slot loader. I have found that I can put my thumb in the center hole, and rest my pointer finger gently on the outside edge, without touching any of the surface, and slip it right into the slot pretty easily, then removing my thumb as the drive pulls it into the slot. It took me a while to figure that out. It helps that the slot is vertical instead of horizontal, although it might work with a horizontal slot, if you put your pointer finger in the hole and rest your thumb on the outside edge. Think about it. So tell me where to find Charismac Discribe. Oh, I can probably just google it. Thanks for the tip!

  • SuperDrive does not read DVDs, but burns them correctly.

    Here is what happens:
DVD Rom (CS4 DVD: doesn't read, OSX 10.5 DVD: reads) STRANGE...
DVD-R Video and DVD-R Rom (burned today by this MacPro with Disk Utility and Verified OK: Asks what to do - like with empty DVDs. On the iMac the same DVD video works perfectly)
    CD works fine
I already reset the PRAM and NVRAM, but didn't work.
    Any suggestion?

On an iMac here it works perfectly. I forgot to mention that, but I tried of course. None of the 4 DVD rom from the CS4 design premium works on the Mac Pro.
The strange thing is that the OSX install DVD works, the iLife 09 DVD works as well.
The CS4 DVD rom does not.
Another VERY strange thing is that I burned a DVD video from Disk Utility (from an iDVD img file). After the DVD was finished Disk Utility verified the burned data, everything was ok so it ejected the DVD.
I loaded the disk back in and the Finder said: Empty disk, open in finder, disk utility, etc... Then I loaded the disk in the iMac and the DVD player started to play back the DVD-R.
The system was upgraded from Tiger to Leopard, so I tried with a clean install I have on a secondary disk (I thought about broken extensions due to the upgraded OS). The problem stays the same.
This makes me think it is a problem not depending from the OS installation, but maybe from PRAM or NVRAM or other stuff on a different layer. I reset PRAM and the problem is still there.
Maybe I need to reset the firmware of the Superdrive or get some suggestion on a physical cleaning of the device, maybe it's just some dust in there...

  • Burner Not Reading Discs to Burn

I've been using my burner pretty regularly for several months: music CDs, data CDs, movie DVDs and data DVDs. Suddenly, this morning, it stopped recognizing media I put in to burn. iTunes never gets past "Checking Media" after I insert a blank CD and when I try to burn data through the Finder, the "Insert CD" prompt never goes away. However, if I insert a CD with data or music on it, the computer recognizes the disc just fine.
Any ideas for diagnostic or repair? Does this seem like a hardware issue, as I suspect? Or could it be software? Is there any easy way to look into this without involving Apple? (and losing my computer for a week or two...)
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • IMac not reading CDs/DVDs

I'm on an older (late 2009) iMac, just installed Maverick a few days ago, but the problem preceeds this.  Basically, my computer will not read CDs or DVDs.  Any disc I put into the computer, I hear the whirring noise as if it's reading the disc, but it immediately winds down.  It will repeat trying to read the disc 2 or 3 more times, then just spit the disc out.
I tried spraying some compressed air into the slot, and it still won't read most CDs or DVDs, but now when I insert an MP3 CD that my boss had burned for me, the window pops up for when you insert a blank CD, so the drive is reading blank (or previously burned CDs AS blank), but not DVDs or normal CDs (for example, it spit out both a video game installation disc and a movie DVD).
I made sure that if i go to Finder > Preferences > General that "CDs, DVDs and iPods" is checked, and everything looks normal in System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

One other thread said it was fixed by waiting till prompted by iTunes to insert the blank disk, instead of putting it in first. Does that work? Found a number of hits on this Googling.

  • I have lost my photos/videos when i imported from my ipad 2 to my new imac latest version and it's not reading the files.  I have downloaded iMac library manager and can see them. can someone shed some light please ?

i have lost my photos/videos when i imported from my ipad 2 to my new imac latest version OS X 10.8.4
and it's not reading the files.  I have downloaded iMac library manager and can see them.  when i go back into iphoto i'm getting the following message :
Do you want to switch the current iPhoto Library from “iPhoto Library.photolibrary” to “iPhoto Library.photolibrary” and relaunch iPhoto?
I don't know what to do - please help !!!!
can someone shed some light please ?

So it appears you have only one library on the hard drive. Apply the two fixes below in order as needed to that library:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • My Mac Mini will not read TDK disks from my iMac G3.

My Mac Mini will not read TDK disks from my iMac G3.
I used an iMac G3 (2001) -- the ones that looked like a big pod -- running on OS X and saved files to TDK  CD-R, 700 MB disks, which worked fine. Now that I have a Mac Mini (model number  A1347) I cannot get this computer to read those disks, made on the iMac G3.  Once inserted each disk will open and I can retrieve files for a short period, then the problems start. The computer makes some noises, the beach-ball/pinwheel goes around and I cannot get the files to open or the disk to eject. After a while the disk does eject -- to my relief. I keep using Control+E until ejection happens.
My Mac Mini (2010-2011) is hooked up to a View Sonic HDMI LED monitor, an iOmega external hard-drive for backing up, an Epson Stylus C88 Plus printer and to the internet by a fibre 10MB feed. The Mac Mini runs on OS X version 10.6.8 Snow Leopard: Processor Speed:2.66 GHz
I took the Mac Mini to an Apple retailer and he hooked the computer up to one of his monitors and it read the TDK disks just fine. I am now using Sony CD-RW, 700 MB disks, but I would prefer to use my TDKs because I have such a large pile of blank ones to use and there are those TDK disks with information that I want to look at from time to time. Can anyone tell me what to do?
    DJG

Try disconnecting everything attached to the Mini except the monitor.
If that doesn't work, try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later. If successful, copy the files to the original account Public/Dropbox.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • I have iphoto '08 version with an imac osx 10.5.8. It will not read my RAW files  from my Nikon D800 - a very new model. How can I get it to read my RAW files?

my somewhat old imac osx 10.5.8 with iphoto '08 will not read my RAW files from my new Nikon D800 camera - a new model on the market( 5 months or so). How can I get iphoto to read my RAW  files?

iPhoto 08 would not read RAW files from that new a camera. You need to upgrade so you can get more up-to-date version of OS X and iPhoto. Another possiblity is see if iPhoto 11 will run on 10.5.8, if so you should update. You can also attempt to run Software Update and see if it finds a newer release of iPhoto 08 that supports newer RAW formats.

  • Burned DVD issues in DVD player not reading or music issues stop and start

I'm a PC converted to a MAC (less than a month) and love it so far. I have been able to create and burn a DVD. The problem I'm having is one DVD player will not read the DVD (Hitachi). The other DVD player will play it, but the music stops and starts when it transitions (twirl) to another picture (Panasonic DVD/VHS combo). I'm using a DVD R Memorex. Neither one of the player are new. Would love to use this to make the Grandparent's a DVD of the grandchildren from birth to present as Christmas present. What do I need to use or do to be able to watch on any DVD player as well as the computers?
    Message was edited by: me01

    Hi me01
Welcome to apple discussions. Try using 99 photos / less to avoid issues with audio fades / drops. Also do a search for Memorex on this forum and you'll see it's not the first choice of dvd's for most users. Instead try Verbatim, Maxell, or Taiyo Yuden and burn at 4x from a disc image for best results. Wish you luck and feel free to post back with results or any further questions.

My 24" imac will not read cd's, reads dvd's just fine.

    1) Make sure the CDs are clean and free from scratches.
    2) Go to: Apple > System Preferences > CDs & DVDs and make sure that blank CD: is set to Ask what to do and that music CD: is set to Open iTunes.

I have an imac 2009 the disk drive is damaged and I have lost the passwords I need to reset passwords I tried booting with a macosx disk from an external hard drive but did not read the drive how else can I reset password ?
I have a 2012 mac book pro can I use that to connect with firewire and load osx that way? and how woudl I do that?
    Thanks so much!

To what password are you referring? Do you mean your user account's admin password? Or do you mean the master password for File Vault or do you mean a Firmware Password?
    For an admin password:
    Forgot Your Account Password
    For Snow Leopard and earlier
Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
instructions in the dialog window that will appear.
Or see Reset a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Password and
OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you cannot do the above then try this:
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command until
you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message,
then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
How to reset the OS X password without a startup CD:
Reboot into Single-user Mode. Enter the following and press RETURN after each command line
       1. Type fsck -fy
       2. Type mount -uw /
       3. Type passwd <username>
I have never tried this method myself.

    Can anyoe help please ?

    Hey,
Ok, your notebook isnt able to read or burn disks but what does this mean exactly?
Is your drive listed in device manager?
=> You could try to remove it and restart your notebook.
Do you see yellow exclamation marks in device manager on ODD?
=> Check the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Its known issue.
Do you get an error message if you try bruning a disk?
=> Try another burning program like CD Burner XP
Have you checked the Toshiba website for a firmware update?
    Which OS you are using?
As you can see, a lot of not answered question they would be important to help you.

  • Imac not reading CD's

Updated to Snow Leopard 6 months ago.
Wanted to rip a CD (music) using iTunes the other day, first time in a while.
Disk not reading, same with other disks. They work on PC's.
Tried some installation DVD's and they are read, it is just CD's it seams,
    Any ideas?

Try doing a SMC reset (Google "Intel iMac SMC Reset" and retest. If that does not work then reset the PRAM (again Google it) and if that does not work then your Superdrive may need cleaning. Go to your local office supply store and buy and CD/DVD cleaning kit and following the directions clean the drive. Then if still not joy then it's probably a mechanical issue that means replacement, if you don't want to pay for replacement (assuming no AppleCare) then get an external DVD drive and use it.
